everyone is a slave to their past. no matter how much you wish to move forward, the events of last year will bear down on you like the light of the stars as soon as you glance up. unable to laugh or to banish your past, you carry it ceaselessly in a corner of your heart, waiting for it to resurrect at an inopportune moment. - Hikigaya Hachiman

I also think people don’t realize, Hikki’s world view is most likely the authors world view. It’s why the author was able to paint such a picture with words that had a thousand meanings behind them, probably because the author felt this way and wanted to project it onto a character. I truthfully honestly admire this author because most likely this thought process was similar or just was his own

I doubt that I will ever get over the fact that yui took such a huge "fall" so that hiki and yuki could be together, not expressing her true feelings for hiki, but instead accepting that hiki had already fallen for yuki. That was what hit me the hardest once I finished the show. Truly one of the saddest parts of this show, and the perfect way to get someone to cry at the end of it. Though I do feel for yui fans (like myself) as the ending, though tying the struggles of the show together, really hit the hardest due to the sad reality that yui will have to face in the future (along with the distortion of their group flow). Imagining another season (if there would have been one) crushes me in that sense. Though, I would say that I still enjoyed the show, and will re-watch it again one day.

Hachiman is probably the most relatable characters in anime, His character is so unique yet hypocritical to the point of being so realistic in terms of what people's true desires are. What i'm trying to say is the people have totally different reactions and changes to their personality depending on the level of trauma they have been through. Yet with hachiman he claims to not care and try to be ignorant yet he selflessly helps others by discarding his feelings and the feelings of others around him.

      only wants fanservice. etc etc
they don't like things that will make them realize stuff or things that would make them use their brains.
but then again they are the most beneficial as they are the ones who dish out money the most.
i always find myself arguing with people IRL just to explain stuff why this anime is good and why they should not judge it as shallow as they do.
and it is very tiring. even a simple explanation of kimi no nawa on why both of them could interact with each other when they both live in different time. seriously even in grade school science / physics is taught. so I fail to understand why they don't know stuff like parallel world theory , time - space continuum, quantum mechanics etc etc.

He is right about some things, and in some ways he's completely wrong. They do that for all of the characters and I love that. He's a character that's overly cynical, rude, and rather elitist. He's creepy and people treat him like it.
But, he does want to help people. He's not a bad person, and he will sacrifice himself for others. Yet he actively avoids becoming better, and everything else relating to change or fixing something.

And one of the morality of this anime, is to be willing to be vulnerable, to develop stronger connections, while also risking being hurt. Risking being hurt, to experience something greater, that's the leap of faith we should all have. Protecting ourselves constantly is no way to live, but that's what feels most natural, to protect the ego. Let the ego die, let the defenses fall, and open yourself, to yourself first, and then to others.

When I was becoming a true weeb back in 2016, I treated Hachiman as a philosopher; a way I believed I should act because of the pain of the past. I hung both of his essays on my wall and I read them everyday. That year I was a self proclaimed loner who avoided all friendships.
When you said, “Those who outwardly mock the state of society from a detached position, may actually be more craving than one thinks,” looking on it now as an adult really really was me.
Damn I’m really crying in 2019. It’s 1AM I gotta go to bed.

    • @Rille922
      @Rille922 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

To be honest Hachiman does say a lot of things thats are true. That is the reason why he is able to help people. He can be very blunt because he has no relstionship with you and does not have to protest your feelings. But I am happy that he was able to work on himself Also and challenge the beliefs he has thought of as fact for a long time. This would not happen in the teacher did not point him at the right direction.

  • @jkatzrapsss

“It is impossible to not hurt someone. Humans unconsciously hurt others by simply existing. Whether you are alive or dead, you keep hurting people. Getting involved will hurt them, but trying not to get involved might hurt them too. But if it's someone you don't care about, you won't notice you've hurt them. What's important is your awareness of it. It's because you care about them, that you feel like you've hurt them. Caring about someone means being resolved to the fact that you'll hurt them. The more people care for each other, the farther out of reach certain things get. But that's not something to be sad about, I think it's probably something to be proud of.”
    -Shizuka Hiratsuka
This quote basically reflects Hachiman’s entire character arc, which personally I find to be one of the most compelling and emotionally resonant in anime. His loner exterior is a facade to protect his fragile heart. His self-image and perception of the world are drastically warped through this lens. And yet, he still craves something genuine.
Hiratsuka-Sensei is, with this short quote, essentially saying that the genuine he seeks exists in a place you can’t reach without taking that extra step. That kindness and caring aren’t weaknesses. Rather, one should feel pride in the notion that they can care for someone deeply enough to fear hurting them or losing them. Of course, it’s multi-faceted (there’s LEVELS to the subtext in Oregairu) but this theme is really rather beautiful to me. Hachiman learning to find value in himself and the relationships he cherishes isn’t a very complex character arc, and yet the simplicity of it is what makes it so... genuine. Oregairu really presents some of the most distinctly human arcs in anime - they’re often not grand, but rather the answer was always right there in front of them.

    • @jkatzrapsss
      @jkatzrapsss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I have to say, I love the line at the end of the video a lot.
“Taking that extra step and becoming vulnerable is what being human is - it’s duality. You can’t have the joys of connection without risking the sorrows.”
I love this anime and I truly love watching your videos.

Most of the friendships i saw from the others in the college are ephemeral because if in the next year you end up in another class, then in the most cases those who you called friends wont talk to you anymore because that friendship wasnt real, wasnt genuine, they wanted something from you or wanted some kind of status, its just... Ephemeral.

When I first watched this anime, I immediately felt a strong connection with Hachiman, and I understood the logic behind all of his thoughts and actions. There's nothing in the series that he says or does that is in any way incorrect or dishonest (until eventually it builds up to his hypocrisy through the forced plot development of a fantastical harem romance). Obviously, I'm both older than the characters, and have lived my life in this manner since before Hachiman was ever conceptualized, it's not as if people who are hyper-rational, hyper-practical, self-centered, uncharacteristically empathetic, AND self-deprecating are really a rarity in this cold, dishonest, superficial world.
Even though I consider the character of Hachiman to be an incredible representation of an actual person living a real life in the real world, where he fails completely for me is in that real world of his. It's very similar to our own, but it isn't actually our real world. He exists within a fantasy world, and the genre to which he pertains ruins the core sentiment behind his character.
It's all well and good to say you do or do not relate to Hachiman in some or many ways, none of that matters, he's not real and doesn't exist in reality. The underlying messages about the duality of man, the prevalence of hope and empathy and supposedly genuine human connection, and love, all serve to fill the purposes of what the anime itself needs to be. A compelling and entertaining, fictional, romance story. And so, it turns the anime itself into a superficial façade.
Religious beliefs notwithstanding, whether or not there is some almighty "author" or "story director" for our lives, we can't say, (though, even for those who believe there to be some higher force, many commit to the concept of "free will" so all of our actions are not being deliberately written for the purposes of a greater narrative). Hachiman, however, IS simply a character in a story, and everything about him and his life and the way events play out for him is simply storytelling and driven by the force to satisfy that entertaining romance story. He doesn't live in our real world, where the harsh truth is, despite what the message may be that "there will always be someone to care for you" or whatever, in reality that is a delusion. There is no entitlement to having anyone in the world care for or about you at all, and while it certainly can be influenced by your actions towards others, there is no reason to believe that "human connections" will prevail like they do in a neatly planned out fictional story.
I agree with the idea that these superficial interactions, these cowardly tactics used to keep society in a stasis, they are just ways to avoid risking too much in exchange for a complacent sense of basic, hollow happiness. And it is stupid to not simply take the actions necessary to attain the happiness you seek. The problem is, not only is everyone not on the same page about honesty, but nobody has to accept your personal goals and affections because you don't have to matter to anyone. Simply being interested in another person and trying to make a connection with them, however sincere and genuine you may be, does not mean the other person has to care about you and repay your efforts to connect with their own.
Simply put, some people, no matter how hard they try, will not have the connections they long for and will continue to lead lives of self-imposed martyrdom and self-inflicted humiliation to contribute to the world that has scorned them anyway. It's not about BELIEVING wholeheartedly that the world is a horrible nightmare that has no place for you, or BELIEVING that eventually someone will show genuine care. It's about HOPE, a fallacy of logic. Deep down, we all HOPE for certain things to go well, whether based on our efforts or based on our wishes. But it's the most irresponsible feeling one can have. Considering that the world IS actually a horrible nightmare with no place for some people regardless of their sense of empathy and longing for connections, then HOPE only serves to continually harm these people by misleading their thoughts, actions, emotions, and perspectives. The original perspective Hachiman adopted where he finally stopped hoping really is the most ideal way to live life if you are the kind of person Hachiman considers himself to be. Once again, however, obviously, Hachiman himself is not the kind of person he is originally portrayed as because the story demands it, and most people in reality are also not this way because they either have some intrinsic value to their existence, or at a minimum, cannot wholeheartedly agree with this entire way of thinking.
Most people, at a bare minimum will at least cling to hope, or love, or some other pleasant-sounding concept to drive them, and that's fine, because most people have value. This sentiment I have of understanding and truly relating with the original character of Hachiman is meant for the few of us who have no hope, and it's not a bad thing. We will continue to work hard and care for others, we will continue to act on cynicism and rational sacrifice instead of perpetuating the falsehoods of interpersonal relations. And we will continue to lose, time and time again, so as to be prepared for the next inevitable disappointment and humiliation life throws our way, and not have to bear the full brunt of being demolished by the dishonest, uncaring void of a world we live in.

      @JulianimeIsAmazing 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

@INOS Legacy of Discord I feel like that missed the point. Taking actions to pursue your goal is about all you can do. But the problem is, there's no guarantee that even with the best of your efforts, will you achieve what you set out to. I can move a stone fairly easily whether or not I hope to, sure. But what if we change it to a boulder, or a mountain? Or to compare it to something else, what if I hope to outrun Usain Bolt? Surely you wouldn't discourage an Olympic Sprinter from training to do so. Clearly I'm no Olympic Sprinter, but is that to say I don't have the same capacity to work just as hard as one? Certainly not, Olympic Sprinters are just people who have put in the extreme effort, yet, why can I not hope to reach the same levels as them?
Because all men are not created equal. We try to deny that fact because it sounds like an injustice and it implies that we may discriminate, and that is wrong, but that's not the point. Whether or not we treat each other with the same respects, I will never be able to achieve the things that other people who are smarter, stronger, more charismatic, and/or more handsome than me no matter how much effort I put into doing so, I just can't compare. And if I were to hope so, simply because I know I am capable enough to work as hard or harder than anyone to reach a specific goal, I'm only being ignorant of the reality that I'm not good enough or that my goal is unattainable.
The easiest example from my personal experience would be similar to what Hachiman understands kindness to be as, condescension. I am generally accepted in my social circles as a kind, hardworking, generous person. People like the me that they think they know. So whenever I have been rejected or failed in my pursuits of happiness, which is every time so far, the people around me IRRESPONSIBLY give me words of encouragement and I hate the platitudes, it really does feel so condescending to be encouraged. For the same reason you wouldn't encourage a person to try to move a mountain, you shouldn't just recklessly encourage anyone if you personally can't guarantee it.
It's all well and good to tell someone they will pass their test, don't worry, because you can support it with the fact that they are intelligent and they are studying and they can receive assistance to prepare, and all sorts of factors that would allow you to comfortably give them reassurance.
But it is IRRESPONSIBLE to just tell someone to keep trying, when there's not only no guarantee to their success, but not even a standard formula for them to keep trying to achieve that success with. And that is why I hate hope. I have such high expectations of everyone around me and of my efforts yielding results proportional to my work, but it's stupid of me to think that way.
Disappointment is the only true force I can count on. Disappointment will never let me down. So I need to simply live practically and do whatever I can to lessen the impacts of my oncoming disappointments, and forget about hope because sometimes some people just weren't cut out to have certain things in life.

I love you bro. lmaO!!! Hahahahaha! I read every fuck word you comment. Honestly, the only thing I rely on in this life is my ability to discern wisdom and insight. I'm currently on a journey to knowledge of self. Personally, I don't believe in "happiness or sadness". I think it's a relative choice to just be happy in spirit and to not attach happiness to external impermanent changing things. Love itself is one of those things too. I don't know anything about this anime, but I do relate to the character. Co-dependency is usually a situation where one sacrifices themselves daily for others, while others take advantage of them as well and I have decided to once and for all give that shit up. What I liked about your response to this video is your insight on the clinging to "hope". Shit it is so spot on. I hoped the woman who was my ex could work things out with me again after we reunited briefly for a funeral just for her to turn around and shit on me, after I adorned her with gifts. This taught me a valuable lesson about having expectations and then expecting others to fulfill them which is a form of "self-seeking" love. A love which is self-centered, because the moment it doesn't get what it wants it becomes abusive and hate filled. This in turn has made me ponder whether love of any kind is even REAL if it only takes a change in tide for it to just vanish. Hence, I agree. Give up on hoping for shit, because this life is uncertain. Hence, I have turned to the buddhist philosophies in terms of learning detachment and over coming the 5 hindrances. I have always enjoyed my ability to quickly gain insight and my ultimate goal is spiritual power. I honestly don't believe in true happinessness in this world. This doesn't make me unhappy. Just determined to learn the TRUTH and that itself has always been the most abiding happiness for me even perhaps at the sacrifice of myself. (Buddha : "There is no self") This "hope" as you say is just another attachment. A false, "expectation" to a future which has no obligation to fulfill anything we think we're entitled to except the now and present of ourselves and what we have.

This paragraph is basically why I dropped this anime to be honest. Hachiman is cool, but I despite the environment and side characters that were created solely to make him look smarter and more special than those who live more outside of their head. Yeah, I get his life logic, he and I have pretty similar personality, but Hachiman feels more like a male Marry Sue, where his philosophy is absolute and the people around will eventually realise how 'stupid' their ways are and how 'misunderstood' he is, which is bullcrap. People have different views on life, yours being the most cynical doesn't make it the most true.
Honestly, I like Tomoko much more. She has a somewhat same perspective, but deep inside she still has the desire to be happy and have human connection, which makes her more relatable to me. Her life is the complete opposite of Hachiman. Where his life hands him two hot girls on a silver plate, she has to try and fail miserably at every step she took, and though she keeps on trying and crawling with her anxiety and cynical viewpoint weighting her down, he just sits there spewing monologue from his arse.
In conclusion, I find that a lot of these brooding introverted characters are wrongly praised just because they're cool and edgy while still being similar to the readers. They have great potential for good stories, to be sure, but most of the time they're just to satisfy some loner hormonal teenage boy's fantasy.

@@hoangkienvu7572 The thing with 8man, is that he is cynical due to self preservation, he was harshly bullied before high school, he deep down wants a nice relationship with others, you can find that with zaimokusa and totsuka, how he can be less on edge around them, he wants to help others, otherwise he wouldnt have jumped and saved yui´s dog and getting her leg broken, after being down so much one generates a pessimistic view around others, check out the first time he meets haruno, yukino sister, he sees through her facade due to learning the hard way, tomoko struggle is no less compared to hachiman, both are hard to watch, and sadly, if one relates to them it hurts all the more, in 8man case, he was forced to join the service club since he is so stubborn he would never take the first step, as he is scared of it, which is actually normal, it is hard to take the first step and sometimes its better to have one give the necessary push, also, 8man is not smarter than the others in no way, what happens is merely he puts the "nicest" solution, delaying the problem, which sometimes it could be misunderstood as being a smart move where its not, see the confession incident, nothing says that the guy wont try again in other moment, rumi, we see how during the xmas event that she was still alone, 8man basically is at the end of the self deprecation, a level lower than tomoko, as he self destructs if necessary and is cautious of everything, the drama of s2 was necessary and was a thing that was a must, otherwise 8man and all the others would be stagnant in their views.
As a side point, i must say too that, in this, after going reading it, it is not the characters i feel a connection with, as weird as it sounds, its with the author, specially with the small but acurate afterwords at the end of each volume, watari wataru uses his past experiences and views, from both back then and now, which i came to see with 8man, komachi and hiratsuka sensei, the way the latter are written, really makes them feel like if real sisters or teachers were in the story, as how hiratsuka gives real life advice, seen in the bridge scene, or how komachi supports her brother, wants him be happy and shows true filial love, not something uncanny like stuff from other shows, which sells me great interactions, the better one can do reading the novel, is not say "hey, i thought like x char once, or i totally get it" its more to do an instrospection of oneself and see how to affront reality, as hachiman says when seeing through haruno "ideals are ideals, reality is not like that, its way harsher"

@@HaxeRain As I said, Hachiman is a cool character, and there's a lot of wisdom from him and from the light novel, it just that the character just fails to shine in this environment. The world in the anime is still too bright and ideal, which makes him look more like a spoiled brat who can't appreciate what he was given and instead brooding over things that he himself says that he can't have. He was given a chance to show his kindness deep down the day he saved the dog, and then the owner of the dog, who happens to be a cute girl, went to him and offered her genuine friendship. What is about that that is the 'reality' that he constantly talks about? And even though he continuously being a jerk to her, she still persists to be by his side, which is just hard to watch for me. And even though he was bullied when younger, that's the only real negative scenario we have. His thoughts are interesting, but his actions are just unbearable.
If only the author toned down the harem, and not made every female character a hot popular diva, this could have made a better show for me. Because ironically, Hachiman is the one who live in his ideals, and although his wisdoms apply in the real-real world, in his world, they feel wrong and conflicting, which is largely because there are no back-ups for his logic, whereas for Tomoko's we see plenty. And then we are constantly shoved down our throat that the real world is like that, and that he is right, which is frustrating. Hachiman and Tomoko are indeed similar, but whereas one is portrayed as a fool, the other is as a scholar.
The concept for the character is good and can be considered revolutionary, but the application into storytelling of a harem rom-com is poor. To me, at least. The show and light novels still have many praises, so perhaps I'm the only one who have some kind of personal agenda to them.

I can relate heavily to Hachiman, and so I have something to add. He is very likely afraid he is misreading or misinterpreting the girls actions and thoughts towards him. At least before the park and aquarium.
Sadly I cant see his philosophy as anything but correct, his starting situation is realistic. But its resolution to it is not. Life isn't that kind, and kind people who care for no reason don't really exist. What i'm getting at is this, the show is great. But the real life likely outcome for the life of someone like Hachiman is dying alone and not fostering any relationships through life. People aren't kind, and would never tolerate or welcome someone with the off putting personality traits of someone who has dealt with such similar overwhelming social isolation and/or depression (as one tends to follow the other and vice versa).
The show is great, I love it. But I see too many people take it as advice or hope of some kind, maybe not even consciously.
    Don't.
If you are in a similar situation, either give up on that last bit of hope you have, or take drastic measures to change your situation before its too late.
No one is going to save you, no one is going to go out of their way to include you, no one will randomly fall in love with you, and the only resolution to a similar situation is action.
    Either give up or act.

But hachiman gave up. That's why it was so hard for him to realise he can't sacrifice himself anymore because people care about him. As long as you don't stay locked up in your home there's a chance some of the people you'll interact with naturally by just living your life(be it by going to school college ,work or anything else) will start to care about you at one point. I believe it's important to both try and break out of your toxic mindset that put you in the loner "role" but to also be prepared to be slowly "saved" by other people, to welcome interaction and not be afraid it's all fake and meaningless

So, what happened in my head after watching this anime ... Stupid hopes that something will change, and I will finally feel good, but no ... This is just hope ... I idealized everything again. That's why I was so shitty. Anime is cool, but we must not forget that this is just an anime, where everyone for the most part idealizes. In reality, everything is not so, not at all. For this, I love him and hate him at the same time. Too beautiful story. And again I begin to understand that one cannot leave reality, it will not lead to anything good. Your comment made me think again. And yet, it may sometimes be better to think things over and leave everything as it is at the moment ... perhaps it will be better for you. Thank you for these words, it even somehow motivated, although what the hell is the motivation ... I will continue to love this anime, these characters ... I will continue to live my life and ... one will still be better. I will just continue to live, because after all, we will all die once. Now I understand why I regretted Hikigai all this time. What he tries not to think about is corroding him from the inside. I hope that Khachchiman will still save Yukina and this couple will be together ... Let them all be fine. I'm always being bullied to the point that I was once an optimistic otaku then turn to a suicidal and pessimistic otaku. Ever since the first episode, I didn't expect that this anime would ever placed somewhere special in my heart. I knew it from the start that Hikigaya is a stoic based on his beliefs. I'm totally agreed to his words that makes me relate so much to him that even before I watched this anime that I'm always fighting problems alone and a person who self-depricated for the sake of avoiding such problems that could ever lose my own sanity.

Is that she was the first person to actually see my true face and thats her reason of her falling for me too, to quote "it was your eyes, something about them told me you were a kind hearted and strong person." Taking the plunge to open up is a road riddled with difficulty but not impossible. Its why i love the character of hachiman really.

Hachiman is a really sad character. His all personality and ideas are realistic and this makes him more sad and relatable. I can't understand why people didn't like second seasons drama. I think drama was already there from the first season.
I got bullied in my all middle school life, maybe thats why I was always felt sad for him from the first episode to the last episode. When people looking down on you after some time you start you looking down on yourself too. 'why am I like this?' 'why can't I make friends too?' 'Am I weird? Is that why they are mocking me?' 'I hate myself'
I literally hated myself for a long time and I'm still insecure about myself. When someone tries so be friends with me I'm always feeling insecure because I can't shake off the 'I don't deserve this' feeling out of myself. Its like a chain. So I can really relate with Hachiman. Change is good but its hard.

To some extent it also shows that even if it's hard maybe relying on someone is somehow the right thing to do. Even if it's not for forever maybe just for now it's enough.

Despite this being late, I recently read "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger and found that there are many similarities between 8man and Holden Caulfield
Holden claims that everyone is a "phony" and is very cynical, he is like this because of a different reason however, but still has some ideas like 8man
Holden also longs for a human connection, getting drunk and trying to talk to whoever he could find. There maybe a few more similarities but that's about it. These two are very different characters and if you would like to see more, I'd recommend reading the book (it's pretty short) or reading some sparknotes or a wiki page on it

This is the best video essasy on an anime I have heard in my life so far. This video summarized, not the story of Oregairu, but the emotional journey of Oregairu, and I thank you for this.
This anime has always had its spot in my heart. I did not understand the true meaning of the anime on my first watch, but I knew that this anime was special. I watched the anime a second time when I got a little older and understood its meaning, but I could not definately define what it was. This video essay took the words out of my mouth and pieced everything together.

I'm not afraid to take risks but the risks I take mostly end up in a failure. I don't blame him for being so self reserved to a point where he contemplates if he deserves the happiness that is in front of him because it does hurt and it can leave scars. As humans we can't stay in a stand still. We can't stay cooped up and think that that's enough. We can't keep pushing people away and think that everything and everyone is a trip mine. And we can't keep lying to ourselves.
Point is push through until you risking your vulnerability becomes worth it and find that genuine thing even if there's a risk of getting hurt. Human progress of any kind never had people in perfect shape after finding progress because that risk is always worth it.

this was in my recommendation today and simply how you narrated it was splendid. When I heard 'human connection', I reacted to it. Because from Sept - Nov I went to seek a professional consultant and let all my personal struggles all those years alone - felt all those emotions was just a facade, putting others happiness before me, not seeking help from others because I''m too independent and my pride won't let me because I believed that's how I survived all problems I've faced without anybody. Those emotions I use to think were genuine starts to become more of an act and it just loses it's novelty. I didn't think much of human connection, whenever I'm mad in a certain situation I, I would hold back and bottle every bit of anger until I would explode to certain point , my days has become white noise and I have nightmares of 'other beings' taunting and whispering in my dreams and I was afraid. It took weeks of rehab and I gradually back on my feet. I hope everyone will take care of yourselves. Take baby steps, it's fine, find the courage to seek help and genuinity in others. Slowly open yourself to others. You're more than you think of yourself.

This creates an interesting dynamic where I make friends, and become attached, but ultimately disappear from their lives once something comes up that inhibits communication though at no pain to my self; ultimately they become just ordinary people to me as I replaced them with new friends, and move on. As a result my life has been one of numerous connections, but connections that lack substance to the point where when a girl I had been friends with asked me out, and I couldn't say yes due the fact that I didn't care; which is exactly what I told her with the utmost honestly to which she didn't take it so well, and I ultimately decided to help her reconcile not because I cared for her, but because I knew it was tearing a friend or at least a previous one apart and as a friend what kind of person would I be if I watched you suffer through this.
