Angela Davis: Abolishing police is not just about dismantling. It's also about building up

  • The nationwide protests that started in response to the police killing of George Floyd have evolved into a movement calling for defunding of the police. "Defunding the police is not simply withdrawing funding for law enforcement and doing nothing else. … It is about shifting public funds to new services and new institutions," says Angela Davis, legendary Black liberation activist and preeminent scholar of abolitionist thought. "Abolition is not primarily a negative strategy. It's not primarily about dismantling, getting rid of - but it's about re-envisioning, building anew. And I would argue abolition is a feminist strategy, and one sees in these abolitionist demands that are emerging the pivotal feminist theories and practices."

    Angela Davis adequately delineates why it is insufficient to evaluate the problems of policing from the perspective of evaluating the behavior of individual officers and correctly gives the discussion the institutional framing it needs to critique law enforcement as an institution. This is the point I've tried to make in my work for years. I wrote about this years ago in my essay "The Myth of the Societal Protagonist Otherwise Known as 'The Good Cop'".

      I've read the original MPD plan of action, it doesn't make any sense either, piecing it all together this basic plan is this:
      Police department is done away with,
      Money from PD is spent on Schools for education, "hand-up" programs, the stop youth from turning to crime, Social workers replace cops and step in to de-escalate situations, should a crime occur perpetrator is given mental health assistance and rehabilitation not prison,
      There is no theft prosecution either that is left to insurance companies.
      The line of thinking is that crime wont happen if you take away the atmosphere that "created it" thus utopia.

    Here's a radical idea, Ms. Davis. If you don't want people to think that you want to defund the police, then don't call your movement "Defund the Police." It seems to me that proponents spend about 85% of their time defending their use of a word that does NOT mean what the purport it to mean, and that's time they could be using trying to prop up their absurd idea that calling a mental health counselor will help when someone is breaking into your house or robbing your store.

  • @babyblu2010
    @babyblu2010 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I have much respect for Angela and I believe she is entitled to her opinion but I can’t fully agree with her on this one. Much criminal behavior is a result of systemic deficiencies. And I agree the penal system should address this, but I don’t believe the police system should be abolished. That will only lead to the privatization of police- where wealthy people can afford to hire private security and those who are poor can not and will be exploited. Sorry Davis but we don’t live in a fairy tale of black and white solutions. Society will never reach the ideal pinnacle where there would be absolutely no need for police because you are failing to realize that not all crime comes from deficiency or mental health issues. Some people are just greedy. Like all those people on Wall Street who are wealthy but who still break the law to obtain more wealth. All the mental health funding in the world won’t stop those people from committing crime. I think that this push for abolition of police is inherently wrong (at least in this case) because the assumption that all crimes are committed by lower class, underprivileged, unintelligent people is inherently wrong.

The Government creates it's own money through the fed, it doesn't need your taxes to fund it. Taxes are used to control inflation. Increasing taxes lowers inflation and decreasing taxes increases inflation. The government doesn't spend your taxes. When you are taxed the government takes that money out of circulation, it deletes those dollars. When the government spends it creates money, it prints dollars. The government could lower taxes, but that would just increase inflation and therefore you are left with the same value of money in your pocket.
