The Persona 1 manga is actually really good. The protagonist in the game is definitely a blank slate, but he's unironically a great character in the manga.
You have bested me in SMT knowledge good sir, I tip my hat to you. But yeah, I only learned that tidbit somewhere in the middle of the process of creating this, and I guess I never caught my flub before I published. Whoops.
@@firescale2091 Yeah, and that little tidbit leads to one of the more...unfortunate aspects of this scenario. See, Tamaki's design was based on a popular celebrity at the time. A celebrity the real life Tadashi had a crush on. In other words, Satomi Tadashi made a self insert so he could fulfill his celebrity crush through the protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei if. This went over about as well as you'd expect, and the backlash reached the point where the Tadashi character was completely cut from Eternal Punishment over it.
I discovered Persona because a friend and I grew up trawling for obscure RPGs. I never thought I'd find something so philosophical in this bizarre but awesome series. Anyway, if you never grew up playing these kinds of games its not hard to imagine people getting lost and confused by P1 before the PSP remake did it justice. I like both versions for different reasons.
I played it in 1997 or whenever. I didn’t feel lost or confused; more like exhilarated. Found some battles very hard though. And I never did figure out the moon phase stuff and its practical application..same as in real life.
This might be weird but I like Kandori. Yeah his goal to become God is generic but what makes it interesting for me is that he gets what he wants and when he does, he loses any sort of motivation. I think that's something we rarely see in media is the villain not knowing what comes after. Then he's back in Eternal Punishment and, while I don't like how I understand he was brought back (this is subject to change as I'm still playing it), I like his answer to Nanjo as to why he's doing this when he seemed so remorseful at the end of Persona 1. He simply thinks he's too old to change. It brings him back as the monster her was when he first died without undermining that amazing scene for me
Yeah I can see why Persona became a popular franchise, it's amazing how much the first game really does pack in so much good character writing and internal character conflict and resolution. The people who were big fans of this game really must've seen something in the game. Also Philemon is truly guy of all time.
This game is super underrated imo The battle system is the most complete of the series, it's hard to master but incredibly satisfying. It was a pretty clever battle system, I really like the idea of positioning your party for them to complement their weaknesses and all. The story is still very original to this day, it's like a Carl Jung video game and I think it best captures the notion of "Persona" in series. The Carl Jung influence has definitely left the Persona series in P3/4/5. Not saying thoses games are bad, but it's a bummer.
That's a very interesting opinion. I actually think its the opposite, and that the Jung's references are more apparent in p3-5. All of the Persona games are great non the less.
As someone who has played this game like 7 times, I can say that yall exaggerate this game's shortcomings too much. This game is dope. Not even mentioning the manga which enhances the story quite a bit too.
I was a little bit confused as of when the routes split but then I remembered that they're separate stories that don't align. This was really well done though, and I'm gonna check out your other stuff
Omg yes! I have loved watching these. I’m playing through Eternal Punishment right now and as soon as I finish it I’m playing Persona 1! Thank you for such a great series
Big thanks for covering this series. I’ve tried playing Persona 1 a couple times cause I wanna experience them all but the first person exploration always put me off, so being able to get a nice summery of the story like this is really nice! This is probably my favorite series of games so being able to really dig into it this way makes me very happy
Persona 4 definitely has the best Nanako to date. Also, loved the video. Persona 1 is charming, and i really don't think it has aged badly, like people love to claim it did.
I wouldn't say it aged badly, but it sure as hell is a lot less bearable to play when there's so many games offering quality of life gameplay. This game is tedious as hell but has probably one of the most compelling stories in SMT as a whole, the story is great but the gameplay could use a tooooon of touch-ups. If you have fun with the style of game this is though more power to you, just most people aren't able to play the thing and have fun hence why a lot of us are here in general.
I love the persona series. Played 1 on the psp. If I played it before 3 and 4 I'd likely have loved it. However it was a bit. . . difficult to complete. It definitely made me appreciate the advancements the series made.
Bruh, I chose all the wrong options because of save states and they all resulted in the same outcome. I was able to get Mc and Maki’s ultimate persona and picked Brown so that was a hilarious and fun experience. Overall, loved the game, good game
Do you script these? Genuinely impressed with the focus throughout the whole thing! Thanks for covering this one so I don’t have to put up with these awful looking dungeons! What happened with those two masked people that was cut away from? And the Night Queen?! Also if we talking about Persona 4 having “nanako...etc etc”, one thing We’ve been discussing in my university video game class is the tone that it covers: a little more adult, a little more grounded in reality (besides tv world, but it could be a replacement for any fantasy place but keeps it in Inaba). The Persona 5 approach to broadening the appeal, and changing the object of the game to bad adults won more fans (along with the game quality of life upgrades of course!), but it was pretty basic and had little nuance. Fun! But not cinematic in the same sense Persona 4 was - Persona 4 had a real last boss! The god was only the optional boss. P5Royal fixed a lot about those themes and basic ness of the general story by adding in the compassions ion ate final villain. That was just out take on it from the class!
The short answer is pretty much nothing happens with the masked Maki and Kandori at the end of the snow queen route. They say a few lines hinting at Maki's storyline then disappear and, that's it, end of the route. They're basically there to kind of tie in with the main storyline, and show that the snow queens powers at least somewhat come from Maki's alternate world.
Because the manga was handeled by a totally different artist. I still don't know why some of Kaneko's portraits in the game are so crusty because his promotional work for the game is godly

I just want to be able to have party members be able to switch out persona. Wild card can still summon & fuse them, but let me equip everyone with a different persona so I can use more strategy. Newer persona games get praised for being more convenient, but they feel like they just stripped down the combat to me. Can't even have more than 4 party members out at a time. Also, Yamaoka dying is significant to Kei since he was the one to raise him when his parents could not or would not. It's also Kei's personal reason to stop Kandori. Yamaoka's last wish for Kei also has significance on his future development. Sure characters that seem to exist just to die may seem one-note, but considering his age it was inevitable he was going to die any, but instead, he is killed trying to save Kei and didn't resent him for Kei Badmouthing him, but instead told him he knew he would become number 1 man in japan. I would say it's heart-rending even if you don't have full context from the start.
