    For the vents on the incubator, I'd recommend glue/taping some screen mesh over the holes. Keeps airflow and prevents escapes.

    • @freddie488
      @freddie488 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I was thinking that too but I've no experience in keeping snakes or incubators so I didn't think it was possible.

      Exactly what I was thinking too. They could probably use contact cement (or similar) and have it blend right in.

    I know I say it every time, but I love that you don't shy away from the realities of your work as responsible breeders, be it babies that don't survive to hatch, hatch with severe spinal deformities, and the late nights, the hard graft. By showing everything you are giving a much more realistic perspective of what is involved, there are too many animal-based social media accounts who only show the fun stuff, and mislead people into thinking that animal care is easy, with no downsides - and then they go get an animal, find they can't handle the realities, and there becomes more and more need for rescue/rehoming orgs. So thank you, Emily and Ed, for being open and honest with your audience!

    Just in case someone hasn't written it already, the Vulcans are a community group in St. Paul based around the ending of the Winter Carnival and the coming of spring and summer. The Winter King Boreas who presides over the winter carnival (and wintertime in general) is ousted from his position by the king of fire Vulcanus Rex and his warriors, the Vulcans, who bring the heat of summer to melt all the snow away. It's a really old tradition from like 1916, although the winter king has been around since 1888. The two kings and their respective courts are locked in an eternal battle for dominance, causing the freezing cold winters and the hot and humid summers.

    At the facility I worked at, milk snakes were almost always the escapees. Those little turds would find their way out of their bins through the teeniest gaps, then dissappear into thin air. Sometimes we would find them right away in random places near heat sources, other times we wouldn't find them until months later. While it wasn't a super common occurrence, it happened about 4 times in the 3 years I worked there, and I heard a story about a previous escape that resulted in the snake being found in the most bizarre location - inside a bin of cut greens for bearded dragon INSIDE THE REFRIGERATED ROOM. Everyone assumed it snuck into the bin while the greens were being chopped and added to the bin, and it was put away in the fridge without anyone knowing what had happened until a very chilly snake was found by the dragon care staff. Thankfully it recovered with no adverse effects.

    I know the one milk snake was bitey from the beginning but my guess is the power drill vibrations probably freaked them out, considering feeling vibrations is a main sense for snakes and something like that would probably feel like a bird trying to get to them. At least they have good survivle instincts.

    Emily, Ed, I have to thank you for the reason I have my pet corn snake! I've been watching this channel for. . . about 3.5 years and I love it. You've inspired me for so many things, helped me learn, all of that. So, this'll definitely get buried among all the other fans, but thank you so much!

    One of the first things I found out when I first began to keep snakes, way back in the 1960's was snakes are super escape artists. One great thing about today is it is easy to find habitats that are mostly escape proof, but if you forget a latch or something, they are almost sure to find it. I had a six foot yellow rat snake that got loose and it was six months befor my mom found him between blankets, in a closet. Looked as good as befor the great escape and maybe even a bit plumper? Never saw a mouse in that house and were was he getting water? Oh, and a good thing for me, my mom had no problems with snakes, had even heightened my interests in them when she saw my interest in reptiles. Some of her best friends befor getting married were good friends with Bill Haas I think his name was, probably one of the most famous herpetologists in the world back then and helped me get my first boa. (Bellboa)

      Every time I hear about a pet snake escape, they're always found in a weird place like that, healthy as can be (and even a bit fat). Snakes truly are apex predators lol

    • @AlishaV
      @AlishaV ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My rat snake had a similar escapade. I got him after a friend found him out on the sidewalk in the middle of nowhere. He escaped all the time, but usually just crawled up the inside of my dresser & curled up in my clothes. When I didn't have a place to keep him for a bit my SIL took him in. He escaped & months went by. Everyone thought the dogs got him or something. The house was empty for a bit, then she moved back in & turned on the utilities again. A few days later someone woke in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom & sat on him where he was getting a drink from the toilet. He was fine, no worse for his adventure.

    • @putteslaintxtbks5166
      @putteslaintxtbks5166 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @AlishaV My sister (or daughter?) had a couple baby ball pythons and when still young, one found it's way out. I don't remember how long it was, they had long befor given up ever finding it, but one day their fridge or freezer stopped working. They pulled it out, and there was the missing python. It had crawled in the fan so it couldn't turn . The appliance was fine and the python was much bigger, and now much bigger than its buddy, whonhad been being pampered that whole time. It was obvious it had been doing a way better job of mousing than their cat, whose job that had been.

      @@putteslaintxtbks5166 Hah, that must have been a surprise. Maybe it liked the warmth from the fridge? Snakes really are amazing.

    Where are peublan milksnakes native too?
    Cause apparently milk snakes native to more northern parts of north america don't always have proper bandkng, but can come with a more saddle like shape of splotches on thekr bodies instead.
    Don't need to mimic coral snakes if there are no coral snakes apparently.
