  • Hi! In this video you'll learn how to pronounce the letters R and H in Brazilian Portuguese.
    Get to know PORTUGUÊS FLUENTE, my complete course:
    www.portuguesdobrasil.com.br/...
    Different from English, the letter H is not pronounced in portuguese, and here there’s no exception.
    If R is in the begining of a word, we pronounce it as the letter “h” in English.
    This sound also happens in the end of syllable or word: Porta, Carpete.
    Learn also the sound of the letter R, that many English speakers struggle to make. It always happens between vowels and it sounds like a flap D or T. Examples: ladder and better.

      you misspelled the Portuguese thanks
      it’s “Obrigado” not “abrigodo”
      not to be confused with “Arigato” which is thanks in Japanese

    Just a note about the letter R in the middle or the end of a word. It varies depending of the region in the countrry. There are 3 variations: the caipira, the soft one like those in Sao Paulo capital, and the one from the throat like in parts of Minas, Rio North/Notheast.

    Your explanation how to pronounce the letter "r" is excellent but I wonder now if anyone will actually understand me if I speak with the tongue up on the alveolar ridge, lol... I think I'm getting there though, will need a lot of practice.

      @@aboutbrazil I've just come across an explanation on some Brazilian website where they say the "r" is pronounced the way you explain it ("r caipira") in the Southern part of Brazil, ie especially around Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, and that in the North East and in Rio de Janeiro they always pronounce the "r" in a guttural way, ie like in the beginning of a word or when two "r" are together ("rr"). Is that true?
      To me, it comes more natural to pronounce it in the guttural way as I pronounce it in English that way too, which is why a lot of people assume I'm French. I'm actually Egyptian but speak English as my first language so no idea where that comes from.
      Also, since the r caipira is pronounced with the tongue on the alveolar ridge, how does one pronounce the word "extra" (the Portuguese word) since the tongue is already at the front teeth from pronouncing the "t"?

    • @aboutbrazil
      @aboutbrazil  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't worry if you can't make this sound for now. It takes time to make it naturally. If you pronounce the English R, it's ok too. 😊

    I would like to know if there are rules for stress on syllables in Brazilian Portuguese

    • @aboutbrazil
      @aboutbrazil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Most words have their stress on the next to the last syllable: altura, vermelho, dentista etc.
      All theword ending in R have the stress on the last syllable: falar, devagar, invadir, calazar... The exception is if the word has a acento: caráter, repórter etc.

      @@aboutbrazil I see. I'm watching the butterfly Spanish on TH-cam. However she doesn't have any Portuguese tutorials, that's why I'm here. Portuguese words are harder for me to memorize, than they are to pronounce since you just rest your tongue from what I seen and the fact that the alphabet doesnt even look or sound anything like the letter. Especially since I'm americano.

      About Brazil Ola Mr Ricardo, also about the letter H I noticed When it comes in the middle of a word some pronounce it as an English Y!! Such as maravilhoso!! Which means it’s not totally Silent!! Is it right or not?

    • @aboutbrazil
      @aboutbrazil  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      R is pronounced as the English H in the beginning or ending of a syllable. Eg: Rápido, Rua, CaR-ta, fa-laR. we rarely pronounce R as the English R, as in car, door. This happens only in few regions of Brazil.

      2 tips are enough for standard accent (Jornal Nacional):
      - like flap T: either single between two vowels or right after other consonant
      - otherwise, like "h" for Hilton
