      The iron bridge, at Iron Bridge, was designed by a Shrewsbury architect called Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, and was built by Abraham Darby III. It predates Thomas Paine's bridge patent in the US by at least 10 years and is generally accepted as the world's first bridge to be built entirely of iron.
