- The impressive Iron Bridge over the River Severn in Shropshire is an engineering marvel. Erected in 1799 and the world’s first free-standing metal structure, it used of the still-new development of fuelling local furnaces with coke, instead of charcoal, to make more affordable cast iron.
Explore this iron casting process and watch as we recreate a section of the bridge using the very same techniques used by the bridge builders over 200 years ago.

I love Blists Hill open air museum and the Ironbridge area. It's such a valuable piece of our heritage. Without the technology used to construct the bridge we we wouldn't have our modern world.
I love these videos! I do wish they were a little longer.
So do I. They are like bite sized documentaries, but I would like to see some longer videos every once in awhile.
I was going to comment the same thing! I really would love a little more detail in some of the videos. I was left curious whether the bridge is still used, what the iron works there creates now, etc.
We'll find you just the right length, don't worry.
So cool! It's amazing to actually pause and think about how these things were constructed and made back in the day. Thank you!
Amazing...I wish I could be part of a project like this 🙂
Magnific. I loved the explanation and the process of production. Thanks for posting.
Thank you.
Which type of coke is used
Basically the same general method today. Atlas foundry Tacoma, wa USA 1982-84
I've been there! Years ago with my school.
Why does the Wikipedia say it was opened in 1781 but video description says it was erected in 1799?
Nice video!
Pls tell coke specification
Hi, I'm making a video of Coalbrookdale, Can I have permission to use a part of your video, about 20 seconds of the metal pouring?
That was awesome, and these guys knew exactly what to do, such knowledge and experience. Well done.
Shove the forced ads ............... rude intrusions they are ................ be courteous........be civilized ...............
The iron bridge looks so much better in black than it does it red.
Making of modern Djibouti
Fantastic!
1st like and comment! Amazing video guys!
