I live in Tulsa and the BOK Center is awesome. We get lots of concerts, NCAA events, and other type shows. Arenas can be used for more than pro sports. It was built knowing we wouldn’t get a pro team.

Plus the ECHL is the AA level minor league for ice hockey, the AHL being the AAA level minor league for ice hockey. Maybe half this size is more suitable for minor league ice hockey, but desiring to land major music concerts required one this size...

I think calling them "useless" is a little too strong of a term. I mean, they're still being used. Just because they don't have a major professional sports team as a regular tenant doesn't make them useless. They still host concerts and other events, or host a smaller sports team. A better term may be that they are "underutilized".

Lets throw in the Arena the Arizona Coyotes abandoned in Glendale. Which is now Desert Diamond Arena. I recently looked at the event schedule for this Arena being I used to work in the building. There isn't much going on there and in my eyes, just under 20 years of it being open it's sadly dying. I did think about getting rehired there but after looking at the lack of events because of no hockey, there really isn't any work and would be pointless!

Horrible criteria to consider for Sprint/T-Mobile in KC. The fact that it never attracted a tenant was a great thing. It was paid off 20 years early thanks to it being available for concerts and whatnot... it is the 4th most attended concert venue in the country. It isn't a drain on the taxpayers like the buildings that have a tenant. If you want a useless arena in KC, the former Kemper Arena still stands....

They’ve also upgraded the seats and the team/backstage facilities. If they had a JumboTron I guarantee it would be used far more. To me, I think it’s very function over form, but I like it for what it is. I just can’t figure out why people ever complain about it. A cool fact: the wood was reclaimed from trees that were downed by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, which is nearby. With all the work going into that place, I doubt they will ever get rid of that place. It’s actually become iconic in our area for what it is.

You can add the Cow Palace in San Francisco. (Technically it’s in Daly City, just south of San Francisco.) Opened in 1941, it hosted the Warriors in 1962-64 and then again from 1966-71. Now it survives by leasing its parking lot. The current calendar on its website lists one event for July, the Low Rider Car Show, and one for August, La Fiesta Del Mariachi.

I went to an AEW show there in March, and there was a good crowd there. They still host the Grand National Rodeo which is an excellent box seat if you can get one. The Cow Palace hasn't hosted any sports team since 2014, because hockey goes to die there. And it's much easier for a Semi-Pro/Minor league basketball team to play at Kezar Pavilion instead of the Cow Palace.

As a Warriors fan, I have had many wonderful memories seeing games at Oakland Arena (it’s also really really hard for me not to call it Oracle). I remember my first time going there was for a Ringling Brothers concert when I was 5. Then in 2012 I watched my first NBA game there where the Warriors beat the Wizards by like 20 points. I remember it was a pretty nice, well kept up arena and I don’t remember it showing age in any way (unlike the Coliseum next door). I think the diamond design on the exterior is quite iconic, even a bit timeless. It’s just sad seeing that arena go from “Roaracle” to being pretty much abandoned now with no teams playing there. Its just sort of forgotten about nowadays. Especially when you think about the situation with the Coliseum that is in the same complex. There was supposed to be an Indoor Football League team playing there but plans for that fell though and they’re playing in San Jose now. I really hope Oakland gets a WNBA franchise sometime soon. Oakland Arena would be a perfect location for them. It would also help give the arena new life.

@dakeved : "It was a centralized location for all of the schools located in the state of North Carolina that were a part of the ACC". There, I fixed that for you. Having a monopoly on the ACC Tournament each year that all but guaranteed that Duke or UNC made the final each year killed the league. There were multiple reasons a founding member of the ACC, the University of Maryland, left for the Big Ten a decade ago. Now the ACC is about to dissolve completely and a big reason why is the nepotism of the league providing distinct advantages to the NC schools. Now you'll have nothing, much like Greensboro Coliseum itself.

tbf to the BOK Center, it is serving the purpose it was built for. It was built in response to Paycom going up in OKC to attract better concerts and shows, and it did succeed there. The goal was to be a top tier concert venue and it did very much succeed there, often getting bigger shows than Paycom. It also hosted the NCAA wrestling championship this past year, often hosts some NCAA tournament games, a couple OU-Arkansas basketball games, and normally one preseason Thunder game a year. It doesn't have any big permanent tenants but it was never supposed to.

As an Okc resident this is true. Paycom is the better sports venue but BOK blows Paycom out of the water in concerts. It’s a lot nicer and definitely made for multipurpose events. OKC’s Paycom was made with sports in mind first. However I would love to see Tulsa get a hockey team despite that seeming unrealistic. It’d be cool to have the NBA in OKC and the NHL in Tulsa. Having the BOK Center on the list is a joke. The arena has been consistently named one of the top arenas in the country & the world. It has been a massive financial success for the city of Tulsa & has brought acts to the city that previously skipped the area. U2 began their last tour at BOK, Bruce Springsteen, Garth Brooks, Celine Dion,...... have all performed there. It has hosted multiple NCAA tournaments, NBA & NHL exhibition games. The Tacoma Dome or Oakland Arena belong on the list, Bank of Oklahoma Center doesn't. Your criteria of an arena having to host a pro team is severely flawed....

I agree about the Greensboro Coliseum (I'm a resident). The expansion was forced on us to keep the ACC tournament in town. Only by adding more event centers and some shady political dealings was the expansion bill passed. Last I saw the G league team played in one of the annexes, not the main coliseum. It is far too large for our population, especially with Charlotte and Raleigh nearby.
On the plus side we did set, at the time, a minor league hockey attendance record at over 20,000. The NHL Hurricanes played here for two years but attendance, due to many reasons, was atrocious. Who wanted to support a team that wasn't staying?
