    Some people enter politics for power and fame. A few enter to try and help the world. It's pretty clear Jimmy Carter was not in politics for power and fame. I'm a life-long atheist, but I hope that I'm wrong and President Carter gets his richly deserved time in heaven. Or perhaps he can be reincarnated many times over -- the world desperately needs more people like Jimmy Carter.

    It feels fortunate that Carter was President during the accident at three mile island. Our house was inside the ten mile radius & it was a very scary time. He was a calming voice in the midst of uncertainty & it was comforting to have a leader who understood the science of what was happening.

      They did an snl sketch just after Three Mile Island. Jimmy comes to visit and goes into the reactor room where he absorbs enough radiation to cause him to grow to a height of 50 ft. They called it The Amazing Collosal President.

    Even when Jimmy Carter was held in a measure of disdain, he was my hero! Times have been mean for quite a while, and Jimmy's kindness, goodness, decency and good will to all are shining examples for everyone!

      He was one of a very few people who served at that time on a nuclear submarine, and planned, organized a safety plan to dismantle the Chalk River Nuclear Station in Ontario.

    I had a roommate in college, 1976-1980, UVA, from Plains. She proudly framed her GA driver’s license with Carters signature from when he was Governor. During those years, I began to admire Carter. Still do.

      ​@@mikejones5364 The stagflation and energy crisis occurred during Carter's presidency were caused mostly by LBJ and Nixon administration policies, e.g. Vietnam War, repealing of the Gold Standard, and intervention in the Arab-Israeli War. It is true that Carter had to deal with the left-over problems from the Nixon administration and then Gerald Ford made them worse. Carter did what he could, but he was sort of screwed with the mess that he inherited.

So, let me be clear, being a “successful” President is not the true or only measure of being successful human being and leader. Jimmy Carter did much to make the world a better place inside and outside of his 4 years as US President, as this story highlights. He has lived a great life of service and he deserves, and will get, dignity in these final hours.

    A truly Great human. I think Patriots are those who give of themselves to their country. To their people. Carter gave of himself. A lesson, that patriotism isn't waving flags and singing songs. It's doing good things for your fellow man. He taught me this.

    Who knew, except you Rachel, that Jimmy Carter saved a melt-down of a Canadian Nuclear Power Plant - 90 seconds at a time! What a beautiful tribute and informative insight into his early military years and the quick decisions he made under pressure. This segment was priceless and reveals his true character of humility and grace throughout his life! 💯❤️. Excellent!

      I knew he had been in the core of a reactor, but never knew the circumstances, much less that it was in Canada! I always had mistakenly assumed it was on a submarine.

      Carter and his crew were heroic, but he wasn't "in charge".
      The Americans requested from the Canadians to help to gain experience and knowledge.
      150 Americans helped 170 Canadian troops and 867 reactor personel.
      Thank you President Carter.

      Not to demean his heroism in the least, but President Carter was not "in charge".
      When the accident occurred, the American government offered Canada to help to gain knowledge and experience which was welcomed by the Canadians.
      Carter was one of 150 Americans who joined 170 Canadian personel and 870 reactor staff in the clean up.
      Not sure where Rachel got the "extra" stuff...

    Interesting. I'm Canadian and never heard of this reactor or the incident. Will look it up. Jimmy Carter...I've had nothing but positive thoughts about the man. I think his heart has always been at the right place.

      Carter was not in charge, he was one of 150 Americans who helped 170 Canadian troops and over 800 reactor personel clean up the mess.

      🇨🇦 I didn't either, but I do know the Chalk River Nuclear Station was a source for the material for radiation treatment for cancers.
      Amazing plan, amazing job getting the nuclear reactor shut down without killing himself or others. ❤️ Thank you Jimmy Carter.

    As a Canadian who didn't know this story, thank you. As a young person I loved him as a leader and didn't understand why the US did not appreciate him. Know I feel even more strongly that he is one of the best men you have ever elected.

      Well, Jimmie Carter was an honest man who cared about everybody no matter their race, socioeconomic statis or age. Or country. I always have thought there was something really strange about the Iranian hostages being released as soon as Reagan was sworn in. That stunk to high heaven.

      Fellow cdn here. I agree with your comment. My cousin from England went to the US with her school while Carter was president. She got to meet him and her class spent all afternoon with him. She said how down to earth and how incredibly nice he was.

      @@dotmurphy7279 It has been proven that an emissary for Reagan went to Iran and made a deal-- it was a deal made by a USA civilian, not the government, and as such was and is completely illegal. It is remarkably parallel to the same type of move made by Nixon's campaign in 1968, as civilians they approached South Vietnam and convinced them to reject the Paris Peace Accords, in order to secure Nixon's election, which it did. Neither of these crimes have ever been punished, and in fact the Republicans have become more and more emboldened because they've never been held accountable.

    I am so proud that I voted for him. I have since voted and/or supported other humanitarian minded people. It is essential that our leaders not only be extremely intelligent but also empathic and have strong humanitarian beliefs. May his final journey be immersed in the love and appreciation of a grateful nation.

    The only day I ever skipped out of school was to go down the street to a friend's house to watch the Carter inauguration. There were probably a dozen or so of us there, and I'm sure the teachers all knew where we were. Jimmy Carter had a difficult presidency, but, in my opinion, is the best ex-president we have ever had. He accomplished so much for Habitat for Humanity, and has continued serving the public with grace and honor. People should take a lesson from this selfless man. My thoughts are with the Carter family today.

    My wife's father was an instructor at the Naval Academy during WW 2. One of his students was a very young Jimmy Carter. He taught Jimmy navigation.

      Thru the Carter Center he also tried to eradicate diseases. He specifically took on malaria in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He did work in Ethiopia too. I’ve gotta refresh my memory, it’s been a while.

    Jimmy, a wonderful man, president, human being. Everything I ever saw he and his lovely wife working together I cried being my heart was so touched by their love. I wish him and his film all the love in the world, and peace in his last days before he truly goes home. God bless you Jimmy for all you did for this world. And may our Lord be with your family.     I'm from Ontario, Canada and although this happened before I was born, this was not taught in any history class I had ( kept on a NTK basis in the 70's)

    President Carter is an amazing man, he has had an unbelievable history and life. President Carter was an amazing President and Naval Officer; and Humanitarian, husband and father.
    They need to make a movie about President Carter's amazing life. Including his work building homes for the needy.
    We love you President Carter. God be with you, Roslyn and your family during your final days President Carter. Makes me cry.

    I'm 🇨🇦 Canadian and didn't know about the Chalk River Nuclear Station meltdown situation and Jimmy Carter's role in planning, organizing the dismantling.

    There is this song by the band 'College' named 'A Real Hero' and it was written with Captain "Sully" Sullenberger in mind, the pilot who landed an airliner on the Hudson with no engines and no casualties. The chorus is simple: A Real Human Being and a Real Hero
    It is the shortest and most accurate description of Jimmy Carter's life. A real human being and a real hero.

    He is such an exceptional human being. The Carters have truly lived their faith every day of their lives. He is the example that anyone of any faith should hope to replicate in their own lives. He will be sorely missed. It breaks me every time I watch a video about him. So much respect for wonderfully warm, sensitive, intelligent, articulate, caring, humble, remarkably giving, selfless man.
