Pinzgauer 718K 6x6 | My new Ultimate Touring Vehicle | ALLOFFROAD

  • Quick look at my new Touring vehicle before the build starts
    1998 Pinzgauer II P80 718K
    Inline six-cylinder Volkswagen Group Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel engine model D24T
    Automatic 4 Speed ZF 4 HP22
    2 Spped Transfer Case, 3 diff locks
    Suspension:
    Body: forward control, , 2 seats + rear
    Engine: P80/90 VW, 2383cc, diesel, turbo-charged, 6-cyls, 2-valves/cyl,
    Transmission: Automatic 4 speed (ZF 4 HP22),
    2-speed transfer case, 3 x diff locks, hub-reduction gearing with drop-hubs
    Suspension: 6x6 coil/leaf
    Brakes: disc/disc
    Tyres: 8.25/R16,
    Fuel-tank: 125L
    Angles Approach: 40, departure: 45, ramp break over: 136
    Pinzgauers performance is impressive, whatever the conditions. Its centre-tube torsion chassis design with independently sprung portal half-axles, independent suspension, powerful engine and brakes with precise, accurate steering provide the Pinzgauer with exceptionally good handling and all-round stability.
    The Pinzgauer is one of the most capable all-terrain vehicles ever produced. Both the 4x4 and 6x6 models can tow 5,000 kilograms (11,023 lb) on road; and 1,500 kilograms (3,307 lb) or 1,800 kilograms (3,968 lb), respectively, off-road.

    I have a smooth, gravel drive about 40 feet long, on a 1-2 degree incline. I sure could use one of these to get my mail.

    Congratulations! You've purchased an amazing vehicle with excellent off road capabilities. I drove the previous, gasoline powered (and air-cooled!!!) versions 710 and 712 in the hardtop and convertible versions, as well as the 712 special version as a weapon platform for the 20mm anti-aircraft gun. Obviously, during my years in the Austrian Armed Forces. We appreciated their versatility, off-road capabilities, and small size for driving all over in the Austrian Alps. What could get scary at times was the narrow wheelbase. What we didn't like at all was the high-pitched whining of the engine, and the exhaust fumes, which would notoriously get inside the convertible versions. I wish you at least as much fun as I had!!

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris, I believe the 718K is slightly more refined, it has a water-cooled straight 6 diesel engine and a full panelled body, for the blue slip the exhaust is currently re-routed to the rear to not come out under the rear doors. However, it still has the straight cut gears so will see how noisy it's going to be.

    Have you considered a fold down off the walls; bunk trailer for the Kids. ( peace for the parents). With high clearance for off road use. And a fold down rear horse box style ramp. With the bunks folded up and the ramp down ( to 1' / 30mm from the ground on supports) you could load a quad and additional equipment and supplies. For the first foot use portable shop ramps ( secured to the main ramp ) to get onto the gate ramp. With a quad and other equipment you could stay below the 1800 kg limit. The trailer could be a flat bed with only 1' / 30mm side walls supporting a removable tubular frame to support ; fabric side walls and roof. Three bunks; one across the front and down each side. If the trailer is 7' x10' the 30"x78" bunk frames will fit when deployed. The bunk frames could be 1' tubular steel with 2" heavy hardware cloth; tack welded to the bottom on the diagonal ( to resist racking, even though it will waste some material ). A 4" memory foam covered mattress will compress into the 1" tube when folded. They would be a structural part of the tubular frame to add rigidity when traveling. With the tubular frame removed you have a utility trailer with a higher capacity for on road use. Use a 7,000 pd / 3,180 kg axle and springs. Just a concept to get you thinking. Bert

      I don't like towing trailers in the bush and as more space you have as more you will take, the Pinz provides ample space without a trailer

    Very capable vehicle! We used them in the British military to tow the 105 light artillery gun. They were also used in Iraq and Afghanistan by the British but were called vectors which was basically a pinz armoured against small arms fire with a hatch in the roof so that a soldier could provide top cover. Sadly they stuck loads of armour around the vehicle but none underneath it which made it a scary vehicle to be in in a place known for its road side bombs. But in saying that it was never meant for that role and the role it was meant for ie pulling a very heavy artillery gun over extremely rough terrain it did very very well!

      the, original, swiss and international versions are not exactly the same. especially engine and cooling vise.
      the 710 are way underpowered, especially the gas engines, aircooled. though back in the day there havent been good, small engines. the mentioned volvo one either.
      anyway an amazing small, 1,8m wide !, extremely offroad capable truck! Probably the best offroad in its size. It only gets better if you lift a truck for higher tires and/or wider axles.

    Good luck and have fun with your new truck. Personally, I find it not a beautiful truck, I find the defender much more beautiful. But that's taste. The pinzgauer is an incredible terrain vehicle. Has this proven in many 4x4 competions. As a travel vehicle, you will have a lot of fun and have much more space than a defender 110. Have fun with it.

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Raymond Logister yes I agree it's not the most beautiful truck but it has grown on me and I'm sure that this will continue. The practicability of the truck intrigues me and the space is very welcome for touring with the family. It's also a very unique vehicle (I believe the only 718K P80 in Australia) and I always liked unique 😀. Let's see how I go

    nice toy!!! only two things wrong: 1) steering wheel is bas ackwards :) 2)Dunno what I think of that combo rock slide bar and gas tank thingie. Ive never seen an air intake behind the drivers seat. looks like it's fairly easy to work on as long as you don't have the thing packed to the top on a road trip.. I'd go for one if the steering wheel was on the other side. you know how strange us yanks are :)

    Hey mate
    I am currently looking into importing a K series hard top Pinzgauer.
    I'm curious to know whether you have had any issues acquiring rego on it in Aus, especially considering it is less than thirty years old and how are you finding it's on road manners?
    There is no doubt about their off road ability but I wondered how much of this comes at the cost of speed, power and handling on the highway?
    As you well know there is lots to see in Aus but often plenty of driving to get there!
    Any advice is greatly appreciated 👍

    Hellow Sir.
    Do you think a wheelchair person, could move inside , turn the wheelchair 360° ?

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the back or in the front? In the back I would think so

    • @syncrovanCos
      @syncrovanCos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV Yes, all the way in the back. Than I imagine I should "jump" from the wheelchair, over the engine bay compartment, for living to driver place. I noticed one Important obstacle in the middle, right behind front seats. What is that, can be removed ?

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      don't think you can remove the bulk head, the front is very cramped as well and getting in and out via front door could be a challenge

    • @syncrovanCos
      @syncrovanCos 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV I was thinking more on side door lift, if it's large enough, or back door lift. The transfer from the wheelchair to the driver seat, should be done by climbing the central console between front seats. Indeed seems to uncomfortable, but was just a thought. How about the reliability of these vehicles ? Also, they are hard to maintain ? Thank you.
