Giles Gill and Eric are the two best young golf instructors on You Tube. They virtually got me from a 25 handicap to a 10 over the course of one year. I still feel I can drop a couple of strokes.
Great video! Giles was teaching me the same concept (in my lesson 4 video on my channel), and it is was one the most difficult things for us early rotators to fix. These drills are new to me and will certainly take the concept to the next level.
At this club parallel position, what would you ideally like to see with your hips and shoulders? My initial thought is shoulders would be slightly closed still and hips would be neutral or slightly open?
Hey Austin! A nice, stock model (but not a rule) would have the hips getting about 30° open...shoulders/chest are going to get about 0°/square to the target line at this P6 position Hope this helps!
Giles has turned into Danny Maude with strange analogies (3 course meal 😂)... Great video and explanation, the best I've seen on this specific drill. 👌🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Excellent vid. May I suggest that a key to making it work well is NOT using the fingers to pull down - fingers will be in charge of the swing and it won't work well. Giles specifically mentioned lengthening the trail arm but I think many golfers will still squeeze their fingers on the handle and pull down with them instead of the way Giles is proposing. Does that make sense?
Hey Jim! Thats right...I would say an average checkpoint would be the hands/butt of club in line with the middle of the trail thigh when the shaft is still parallel to the ground
Hey! Great question---some of both. What someone needs to FEEL depends on what they are currently doing ya know. What's really happening... 1. Pressure into and then off lead foot and into trail foot early 2. Legs changing flex 3. Hips turning and tilting 4. Torso turning, tilting and extending 5. Arms working up and in 6. Wrists hinging up and lead wrist flattening Lol and thats a "simple" list....so there's a lot going on...of course you can't THINK of all of that. Would need to see your swing to see where YOU would need to focus....send swings to www.cogornogolf.com if you ever want some guidance!
@ Really appreciate your insights. The ‘list’ that you’ve outlined makes perfect sense. Your concepts and methods of sharing knowledge are spot on! I’m trying to optimize the transfer of energy from my body through the arms+club to maximize speed and fully compress the ball. How does rotation factor into this equation?
Too much to explain for a simple text response here....BUT....good news we have a gazillion videos on that :) If you search my name and "rotation" you'll see all the answers you're looking for!
Agreed, Russ---def different feels/message here. Both can be great for the right player---thats really the key to how which you need more of! Appreciate your support!
Hey Joe! Yep I hear ya, great question....thats why I made sure to bring that up early in the video. Different players need different things... As I mentioned I've had success with both ways depending on what the player needs (to get arms more down in front/forward sooner OR body open sooner) Try both and see what works best or send in your swings so we can give you more specific answers that will work based on your swing
Hey Sam! Sometimes---I think it depends on what the student needs more of. Lots of players I work with have the arms/club not getting forward enough at impact.....for those players especially getting arms down sooner/faster can help!
This opposes the teaching I've been implementing which is to let gravity drop the club as you shift & rotate and physics takes over the arms and club. So many teachers have spoken against pulling the club down as fast as you can. So I'm pretty confused right about now
Hey there! Yep I hear ya, great point....thats why I made sure to bring that up early in the video. Different players need different things... Awesome! Thank you!
Love to hear that! Appreciate ya!
Great video Eric. Cool to see Giles here stateside collaborating with top coaches like yourself.
Appreciate your support! Thank you!
Another great video from two of the best
Thanks David!

Great video guys! Happy new year.
Thanks Steve! Same to you and yours!

The lower hand focus might also help prevent early extension.
Thanks
Hope it helps Nelson!

Haha thank you :) I thought that was a nice one!

Thanks Stuart! Lots of details we could work through here for sure---maybe future vids!
So when you come back down to parallel, the hands appear to be more around the rear thigh area than centered to your body, if I am correct?
Hey Jim! Thats right...I would say an average checkpoint would be the hands/butt of club in line with the middle of the trail thigh when the shaft is still parallel to the ground
Would this feel translate over to the driver/woods? 🤔
Yep! I would say concepts here would apply for all clubs
With regard to the back swing - is the feeling that you are turning back or swinging the club back?
Hey! Great question---some of both.

…during the back and down swing.

Interesting Eric. A different approach from your session with Trevor. I understand it but prefer what you did with Trevor. Be well-Happy New Year-Russ

I get it Eric but what about the talk that the arms come down for the ride?
No such thing as letting them fall. It’s a feeling but only works for a rare few. Arms pull hard for every golfer (that’s what the data shows) 😁
Hey Joe! Yep I hear ya, great question....thats why I made sure to bring that up early in the video.

This seems like rushing from the top which usually causes problems. Thoughts?

I took this drill to the range, found myself hitting several very fat shots. I don’t really know what to feel on the follow through
