      My heart likes both.
      I like the hard side for its durability, organization and sleek, modern look.
      But, I like soft side for the outside pockets, and multitude of pattern choices. I prefer to have luggage that is unique to my personality and that I and others can recognize easily. I say others, because having a unique color or pattern minimizes the chances of someone else mistakenly taking your bag. I don't travel often (relatively), once a yr or so. This year it will be 2 times so durability is on the bottom of my priority list, although I still want quality luggage . Ive never experienced damage on either type. So, for my lifestyle, for now, I'm TEAM SOFT SIDE.

      @@ItsTheKellys Also, forgot to mention. I bought two pieces of luggage when I was in Molokai, soft side, with white and yellow hibiscus flowers on a black background. All of my family on my mother's side are all from Hawaii and since my mom and grandma have both passed, this luggage has sentimental value. I always feel like they are with me when I travel.

    On check vis a vis carry-on, do bear in mind that the ergonomics of hoisting a bag into an overhead bin are tough as one ages. As a 75 year old -- tho fit & in good health, I've coverted from being carry-on only to resigning myself to checking in recent years. SO, for us older fans, your assessment of checked luggage is also much appreciated. Your videos are terrific! Jan P, Washington DC

      For sure, Jan! Thank you. Would you just take the same size bag and check it instead? I find that most people, when checking, end up packing more, and then they are hauling 50 pounds vs 20. Although, less lifting is needed :)

    Hardshell luggage looks nice, but is frankly, less practical. It is vastly harder to pack with two shallow halves than a single opening, they require a giant area to lay the thing out on when packing and unpacking and they hold less. Super inconvenient in small European hotel rooms. They have no pockets on the outside--and your suggestion that hardshell luggage are the only ones that come with good quality spinning wheels is just a misstatement--cheap softshell luggage like the one you showed comes with cheap wheels. Same for cheap hardshells. Many veteran travellers (like flight attendants and pilots) prefer two wheeled luggage BTW because silly weekenders take up two persons worth of space in crowded airports holding their luggage off the the side versus pulling behind them. Hardshell luggage is much more likely to be dented, damaged, scuffed and cracked and your suggestion of "don't check it in" isn't always an option--and it gives the hardshell luggage a pass for its inferior durability. I own lots of cases and my older hardshell stuff looks like crap after a few year on the road. The only real advantage to hardshell I can think of is slightly lighter empty weight (for the modern plastic varieties) and the contents are less likely to get wet in the rain if it is checked and left on a tarmac.
    Everyone got "carried Away" with these in the last few years because of their sleek looks, not their practicality--and I think hardshell looks as great as the next person--but if I'm being honest about it, a more practical suitcase for most people is softshell. A Briggs and Riley Basline piece if you can afford it, in fact--top luggage rated by the NY Times.

      @ItsTheKellys  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And I disagree with most of the things that person said honestly. It’s way easier to pack with two sides, they totally fit on luggage racks, and 2 wheels are a nightmare. I get quality hard shell luggage that doesn’t scuff or scratch. I’ve tested all of them that I have reviewed. (I have about 20 of them now) But that’s just my opinion, to each their own.

    We're flying from Australia to Italy for the first time in June this year and was hoping to do carry on only but we're flying Emirates and their carry on allowances are smaller than any suitcase I can find, and they don't allow a personal item in addition. It's essentially a "handbag OR laptop bag" for each economy traveller. I wish we could do carry on but I don't think it's feasible on all airlines so while I know you prefer carry on (and I don't disagree!) thank you for touching on the checked baggage. Hopefully ours survives the trip and it's there when we arrive 😅

    Carryon I’d great unless you are on a full flight and have to check your bag at the gate ( occurred more than once) or the airline has a weight limit on your carryon bag and you have to check it. Both have happened to me but I would still carryon with a hard shell. Happy Trails!

    I've always struggled with my packing issues, but I found an L.L. Bean carry on, wheeled soft side, the Carryall Spinner Pullman, that's a perfect carry on size, and a Delsey Paris Expandable Spinner, ( hard side ) that was perfect for my recent trip to India. The Delsey came through the trip; with no damage; which surprised me. I was expecting some damage, to be honest.

    Thanks, I never had a hard shell bag so was considering getting one but was unsure. I sometimes have a hard time finding room to put a computer backpack up there.

      Yeah unfortunately people are putting their backpacks and jackets and smaller items up there and not leaving room for luggage. I always like to board as soon as possible, and if I’m sitting in the back, I will put my suitcase in any in bin in front of my seat, even if it’s nowhere near me.

    When I’m travelling carry on only I prefer a 2 wheeled bag because you gain more interior packing space because the wheels don’t take up as much of the exterior dimensions of the bag. If needing a checked and carry on bag, 4 wheel spinners so you can put the cases back to back and hold both handles.

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting with the wheels. I use packing cubes so it doesn’t take up any space on my end. Spinners are usually under the suitcase vs the two wheels are usually half in the suitcase.

    • @BrynneC
      @BrynneC 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ItsTheKellys but that’s what I mean. You have to fit the exterior dimensions of the suitcase into the sizer. So you lose 1.5-2” of height that could be suitcase to the spinner wheels.

  • @susandiekmann

    I prefer hard sided luggage for sure, but on a recent flight, I questioned that choice. I had to push and shove my carry on to get it into the overhead bin, and had to accept help from a guy at the end of the flight to get it back out. And I had a 20 inch! It made me wonder if a soft-sided would have squooshed better. If you haven't yet done a video on safety while traveling, would you do one on that subject? When we travel in the US, it's not to crowded, big cities, so we aren't that concerned about pick-pockets and such. On our upcoming European trip, I'm needing some tips! What have you learned to do or not do? What to carry or not carry? Thanks!

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Susan, on my last flight I had a similar situation with my eBags backpack. I was on one of those tiny Delta planes and I had to take stuff out of the front pocket to fit in the overhead bin! My hard Beis would have never fit!
      And yes, I’d love to help you with safety! It’s been on my list for a while. One tip I’ll give you now… I love a decoy wallet! An old wallet with a few bills and maybe old cards so it looks legit. If someone tries to mug you, throw that and run! Thankfully I’ve never had to use it, but it’s my favorite tip!

    You haven't mentioned the inconvenience of living out of your bag with the hard shell The hard shell luggage takes up twice the space when you are unpacking it - or trying to live out of it for a day or two - than the softshell. Also, durability is much less of a factor with a carry on when you, not the luggage handlers, are going to be keeping your bag with you. As for weight, my Travelpro spinner weighs almost a pound less than my sister-in-law's hard shell - both carryons.

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve never ever felt inconvenienced living out of my hard shell, whether it’s 3 days or 3 weeks. I pack packing cubes no matter what bag I pack, and my luggage is always put away and unpacked in my hotel.

    • @patpaxton8602
      @patpaxton8602 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But just trying to lay out a clam shell hard side on a rack is extremely difficult. Unless you find a hotel with over sized racks (practically non-existent) it’s impossible to unpack unless you place your suitcase on the bed (gross) or the floor (also gross). After an episode of wet clothes in Europe, I’m interested in a hard side, but looking for one that opens like a soft side, and then using packing cubes for my organization where needed.

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve never used a luggage rack in my life, to be honest. Hotel room floor, overhead bin, under the plane, on the luggage carousel, through the TSA bins and belts… it’s all germy. At least the hard shells can be wiped down and cleaned better.
