Back when I skated figures my coaches in the earlier years of my skating would talk about skate lengths without technically defining it. It's not a boot length as some people may think. It's actually from the front axle to the back axle of the roller skate, which is a relatively short distance. The axle lines are right above where the wheel contacts the floor so even from edge of the wheel to far edge of the other wheel is still bigger than what a skate length actually is. It's not easy getting those take offs in such a small box (the strike zone).
