@@funkinthatrunk3795 thanks for posting. i met roger's brother at a record store (roger was with him and needed to use the restroom). we didn't have a public restroom. they bought classic soul cd's and went outside and his brother became angry about the restroom "snub" and returned saying "i want my money back!" we had sign saying "no cash refunds" and his brother said "if it makes you happy to rip me off..." and stormed off leaving cd's they'd purchased. a few years later after "i wanna be your man", i read what happened to roger and remembered his brother's temper. i wish restroom matter had been handled differently. he had a mink coat on and never said a word. i wish he were still with us....

I saw Roger 6 months before he died in Memphis TN, in a small club with standing room only. They rocked the house, and this was the exact same performance!
You're right that they definitely rocked every house they ever played in. The performance in '98-'99 wasn't exactly the same, though. This video is listed as being from 1990, and I saw dozens of their shows in southern California between '93 and '99, up to the week before Roger's death, so it was interesting to see how the show evolved over those years, and then to go back and see a video like this one from 1990 to see what I missed before the first time I got to see them live (I didn't turn 21 until the late '90s so they had to sneak me into all those clubs otherwise I would have missed out!). I'd easily vote for Roger and the Zapp band as the nicest people in show business, along with the Whispers and the late Grady Wilkins, the late Bernie Worrell, and the late Sugarfoot. Anyhow, yeah, the small club shows were the best place to see them, because they got to play a whole 75-minute (or so) show, as opposed to the radio festivals and the car shows, where they'd get 20-25 minutes if you were lucky. And anyone who ever got to see Roger & Zapp in a small club setting knows that it's impossible to fit that great show they had into some 15-25 minute abbreviated version! Anyhow, thanks for sharing and thanks to Funkinthatrunk for posting this video!

I often feel it is necessary for folks to learn more about this family. Everyone I knew had ties to them and knew them all and still do. This Band was great but it was a tool used to keep the family company strong. None of these brothas depended on the little money the music business paid out. I mean they made 4-6 times more money from their business. Record sales is for poor people, this family was never ever poor....lol Even in Hamilton they were upper middle class but found financial success in Dayton. When I was 9 my momma got me a brand new fender and a fender twin amp like all my friends has fresh new instruments cause Dayton was a city with more jobs than people. We would always ask one of these brothers for tips on a special chord we heard or a new solo we heard someone else play. They were always willing to help but make no mistake, they loved their family business more than playing music. I miss that life but watching these clips are my way of reflecting.

I had a cousin "Drac" from Slave who wrote that epic guitar solo. We used to sit and listen to Ernie Isley, Peter Frampton and so many other guitar players. When the group got famous he bailed....he was enjoying his life too much to chase fame sot they had to hire another guitar player.....lol
roger is so missed he came at where music was changing in greatway and in the 80's and early 90's when passed it was cruely and sad that one best ever to make produce and write music was gone but his his music will live in me forever thank roger troutman rest in peace and power .

Tons of black artist don’t get their credit for guitar … and before the “making it about race” comments…. Wouldn’t not mentioning roger and underrated black guitarist such as him really be making it about race
I think it might be more about the genre of music than the musician's race. Funk music had tons of really great instrumentalists--virtually all of whom were Black--but very, very few got any recognition. On the other hand, Black musicians in Rock music--like Jimi Hendrix--got plenty of recognition. Obviously, race always does unfortunately play a role, but it seems to me that other than the hardcore fans, most people sadly paid more attention to the danceability of Funk music than the high quality of its musicians. Anyhow, I don't know whether you've heard the Roger and Zapp albums in full, but there are tons of tracks where Roger's guitar playing is on display--whether in solos like on Dancefloor or in instrumental jazz and blues tracks that were always included on each album--so in case you aren't familiar with some of those tracks, look them up here, and I can give you some recommendations if you like.

@@mattnixon588 Well, I'm not at all disagreeing with you, just pointing out that it might be a bit more complicated than that. White singers/musicians being elevated to a higher level than much more talented Black singers/musicians isn't anything new, and some might even argue that it goes back to Elvis's time. But there was another string on this video where someone who knew the Troutman family decades ago was pointing out that one reason why Roger & the Zapp band never got as famous as they could have was that they wouldn't sell out to the record labels. I wasn't part of that conversation, but if I recall correctly, it had to do with the fact that the Troutmans stood their ground, didn't take advances from the record companies, and also--as is obvious from the variety of genres on their albums as opposed to just making each album 100% danceable funk--maintained creative control over their output. They kept thing within the family--and the other poster mentioned that their construction business was always their bigger priority than making and releasing music--and while their music "crossed over" on its own, they culturally did not. So they may have self-limited themselves in a lot of cases, which is fine because they did things their way, didn't let success go to their head, and really stood up as Black role models in their local community and beyond. That said, of course, it's common knowledge that MTV in those years was extremely racist in its selection of music and artists to promote, and most markets didn't get BET until well into the 1990s, so I'm sure that that also played a role in limiting their exposure. The bottom line is that anyone who says that Roger Troutman was one of the greatest guitarists of all time isn't all that far from the truth, as those of us who were lucky enough to watch him in person knew very well.

roger is so missed he came at where music was changing in greatway and in the 80's and early 90's when passed it was cruely and sad that one best ever to make produce and write music was gone but his his music will live in me forever thank roger troutman rest in peace and power .

I think it might be more about the genre of music than the musician's race. Funk music had tons of really great instrumentalists--virtually all of whom were Black--but very, very few got any recognition. On the other hand, Black musicians in Rock music--like Jimi Hendrix--got plenty of recognition. Obviously, race always does unfortunately play a role, but it seems to me that other than the hardcore fans, most people sadly paid more attention to the danceability of Funk music than the high quality of its musicians. Anyhow, I don't know whether you've heard the Roger and Zapp albums in full, but there are tons of tracks where Roger's guitar playing is on display--whether in solos like on Dancefloor or in instrumental jazz and blues tracks that were always included on each album--so in case you aren't familiar with some of those tracks, look them up here, and I can give you some recommendations if you like.

@@mattnixon588 Well, I'm not at all disagreeing with you, just pointing out that it might be a bit more complicated than that. White singers/musicians being elevated to a higher level than much more talented Black singers/musicians isn't anything new, and some might even argue that it goes back to Elvis's time. But there was another string on this video where someone who knew the Troutman family decades ago was pointing out that one reason why Roger & the Zapp band never got as famous as they could have was that they wouldn't sell out to the record labels. I wasn't part of that conversation, but if I recall correctly, it had to do with the fact that the Troutmans stood their ground, didn't take advances from the record companies, and also--as is obvious from the variety of genres on their albums as opposed to just making each album 100% danceable funk--maintained creative control over their output. They kept thing within the family--and the other poster mentioned that their construction business was always their bigger priority than making and releasing music--and while their music "crossed over" on its own, they culturally did not. So they may have self-limited themselves in a lot of cases, which is fine because they did things their way, didn't let success go to their head, and really stood up as Black role models in their local community and beyond. That said, of course, it's common knowledge that MTV in those years was extremely racist in its selection of music and artists to promote, and most markets didn't get BET until well into the 1990s, so I'm sure that that also played a role in limiting their exposure. The bottom line is that anyone who says that Roger Troutman was one of the greatest guitarists of all time isn't all that far from the truth, as those of us who were lucky enough to watch him in person knew very well.
