the 1920s Salem elevator part kind of reminds of some modern skyscrapers which are meant to have direct elevator access to your apartment unit. Such examples being 111 West 57th street in New York City, Ahuja Towers in Mumbai, etc.
I KNEW that 1st elevator was a Payne with Salem's name on it! The interlock says all. (Remember, Payne was super HUGE up here, so I've seen a ton of them in their days.)

Roanoake Elevator service co, that's a first, must've been a distributor of Salem at the time. The Westbrook had a really cool motor, almost Chewbacca like.

Prob pre 1930. Most elevators since then have had interior door.

To me all the elevators look like old Otis elevators
That blue elevator at the laplace building looks to be a salem
That one and the one here both are almost the same, but different motor sound, light & fixtures
both doors should be automatic
to make it automatic,you would have to modernise it which isn't allowed
