Yes, I listened for 2 hours. Kenny G is not only an amazing artist but comes across as a really nice guy. I met him years ago backstage before one of his concerts. There were a few of us with full access, he was doing a sound check before the concert, we could hear him, when he finished, his manager said that there would be no time for autographs or photos. Seconds later Kenny comes backstage with a Sharpie in his hand and says, "Ok, who wants an autograph ?" This podcast is worth several re-listens. But now it's 4AM and I'm going back to bed. Thanks guys for doing us a great interview. And thank you Kenny G.

Many moons ago I was a security guard at an office building in Santa Monica, California that had several entertainment attorneys in it. One of them was handling Kenny’s business. That being said, during the holidays one year there Kenny sent over fresh baked gingerbread cookies. They were awesome and I’m a gingerbread fan so I know my cookies. Kenny has always been a good guy.

Thank you Dave and Ryan for doing this. Great to see Kenny talk from a saxophone point of view, very illuminating. An interview long overdue imho and much more interesting than the recent HBO docu about his persona. Bu that might be a sax bias of course.
Also great to hear how Kenny learned so much from transcribing and I've always wondered about that how the making of that Funny or Die video was too, epic sketch 😂!

Thanks a lot everyone who was involved in this great and inspiring discussion! Great gem! Dave, Ryan, Kenny, thank you!
Just one little thought about “Greatness“ here: When Kenny says the world doesn‘t turn away on greatness, the question is, what do you need to become really great these days? Is it really only practicing 3-4 hours a day and really commit yourself fully to your music? I‘d say that surely belongs to it but in the end you also need a unique authentic and very personal idea about how and what to play, about your music and sound. I can imagine that you come up with that in those 3-4 daily hours so maybe it‘s really just that (have to try that myself, don’t you want to as well? 😉). But I have the feeling that you have to put in some deep thought and observation as well. Anyway - really great and inspiring insights! Thanks again! 👏

What an awesome interview and what a treat to hear such an extensive interview...fascinating! I saw him twice in my life...he really is a great showman and makes people happy and it was of the best shows I was able to take my late Mom to. And man, he can play! While my tastes in jazz have moved back to bebop and classic now, I still say Kenny G has made a mark. If people want to denigrate him, that's their right, but he definitely has chops, despite no formal training, and is a heck of a nice guy, which shines through in this interview . Thank you for presenting it.

Loved this session! Kenny G is why I started playing sax 3 years ago. For our 25th Anniversary I wanted to take my wife to Hungary where she has family roots but it was the height of the pandemic. Travel anywhere was restricted. My wife always loved Kenny G and one of his songs was our first wedding dance. 3 months before our anniversary I come up with the bright idea of secretly learning the sax and surprising my wife on our anniversary by playing Kenny G for her. I had a musical background with piano and guitar but had zero knowledge of sax. I didn’t even know there were different kinds of saxes and that they were transposition instruments (what’s that?). The only thing I knew was that it was a single note instrument so how hard could it be to master, right? I had 3 months to master one of Kennys songs. 😂😂 After the debacle of what sax to order I settle on an alto and after the first week I find a transcription of Songbird, I think it was that someone did for alto. After a month I come to the realization that sax doesn’t get mastered in 3 months and neither am I going to have this song learned so I settle on a much simpler version of an Elvis song. Let’s just say my wife was truly surprised as I walked down the hallway of our house with the backing track going and me playing Elvis. She starts crying, then starts laughing, then crying. I’m nervous and get flustered by her reaction. Fast forward to this past February and I played my first gig, if you want to call it that. Entertainment with a group of friends at a rented hall. I secretly learned Forever in Love on my tenor and dedicated and played it for her. Went a little better than the first go-round.
Although I have had a musical background since childhood, I never fell in love with music until I picked up the sax. Now I love both!

While he’s still not my cup of tea, I think this discussion was far more interesting than the HBO special about him. Well done.

Jazz police are definitely not happy that you sell so many records while their favs are struggling and playing for 50 while you fill up arenas

Those artist that did Kenny G wrong like that I'm sure have been victims of the jazz police at one time or another. Those artist should apologise to Kenny G. That was a ghastly thing to do and very mean

I love how this whole thing is about making Kenny G as a legitimate jazz artist. Now some will say Miles Davis said don't call it jazz just call it music. Why, because the word jazz was used as a slur. You could be a jazz musician or a legit or legitimate musician but jazz musicians were not legit. Jazz was used as a racial slur. Hating on jazz was about hating on black musicians. Today jazz is on par with classical music as art music. Jazz musicians get respect. It is surprising a rich white guy wants to attach himself to the jazz tradition to give cred to his cheesy pop music. I know you are saying jazz police but I have no apologies for respecting the music and the people that created and developed the music. Not surprised these two are supporting it as teaching jazz on the Internet seems to be about pandering to the instrumental pop and Laufey crowd. When Kenny and Laufey are jazz, jazz is dead.

Kenny never said he is a jazz artist even before this episode. Go listen to your favs and leave Kenny alone. If you could listen with a heart that’s willing to learn and not always ready to bash you could learn something. Kenny can play bebop by the way there’s videos of him playing a tenor right here on TH-cam so please. Sit down.
