    Rivian suprised the world during the reveal of their R2 to drop the R3 and R3X, and those two have captured the attention.
    Pulling design cues from some famous cars of the past like the Mk1 Golf, details are sparce but it looks fantastic!
    This could be a game changer for Rivian, pushing them into the lead of an underserved segment of the EV market and sucking the air out of the space before other manufacturers like Tesla or Vinfast get their products out.
    But can Rivian pull it off?

    To me, Rivian has carved out their niche really well. I like how the Rivian R2 and R3 cars already seem to have a lot of character in their design, instead looking bland like a Tesla or Chinese EV. I think it’s very cool and I hope Rivian survives to make it.

    R3 was stated to be cheaper than R2 I believe... So hopefully a sub-$40k starting price. I'm with you, I saw all the leaks of the R2, wasn't particularly interested, even though I'm sure it'll be a great seller and a great competitor in that market segment... Then they just blindsided everyone with the R3 announcement. Gotta say, wow, if they can survive long enough to push the R3 out the door, and it's comparable in price to something like a Model 3 or EX30 ($35-40k starting, and I assume it'll qualify for the tax credit), sign me up.

    I'm a long-time Bolt EV/EUV guy - now in a 2023 Model Y LR AWD - but I would love to be in an R2 or R3, I';m 6'4", so the R3 would have to be at least as big as a Bolt - and even that had elbow room issues for me, to some degree). So it'll probably be the R2 for me - I just reserved one. The timing is OK for me. It'll be 2 1/2 years since I got the MY when it comes out. I really like their designs. I'd love to have both of these in my garage - R2 and R3/x

    If anything they need to delay the R2 and push the R3 ahead of it, especially the base single-motor model which I hope is trimmed to really own its' base-model hatchbackness. The medium-crossover EV segment is the most crowded, as you said, while the Chevy Bolt never collected on dealers' lots and sold to a waiting list to the end and Nissan still finds buyers for the very stale Leaf.

    I have seen a couple of R1Ts on the road - it is kind of hard to miss that front end and I have a friend that bought an R1S fairly recently. I have not followed up with him to see how he likes it and what the real world range is. Alas, I find It difficult to generate any enthusiasm, as an EV doesn't really work for my use case right now (regular 200+ mile one way trips to a more rural area where there is significantly less access to charging infrastructure). The high price doesn't exactly help, either, even with the tax incentive, but that's just me. I'll just keep my raggedy old Honda.

    The R3 is the first EV that’s really peaked my interest. Most EVs are, to me, too big, too heavy, too expensive. I’m looking for an 80’s shitbox that has reasonable range (not huge), good reliability and is reasonable in price. As another commenter pointed out, I think Rivian would be wise to pause the R2 and go as fast as possible on the R3.

    I remember when I first saw a Rivian R1. I didn't know what to make of it. I've never driven one, so I don't know what it's like to drive. But being the kind of person who judges a car by its outward appearance, at first I thought it was super mega-fugly! with its vertical headlamps and horizontal light across the front end. What?! And then I saw these Amazon delivery vans. I didn't know it was a Rivian until I saw the name somewhere on the lower part of the body, where it said *"built by Rivian".* I didn't find the Rivian as attractive at first to look at as the Tesla Model S.

  • @johncarync
    @johncarync 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Rivian still has the production hump to get over and they still lose over $10K on every car sold. It would be great if they could make it, but I'm not sure they will.
    Rivian has set themselves apart as "the trucks with the weird headlights." If you look at a picture of a Rivian from the front, close one eye and put a finger over the headlights, it looks like a normal truck. Now they're pigeonholed as the brand with the weird headlights which becomes an albatross around the necks of their designers as they are coming up with refreshed designs. But it might be moot and the designers may never get the chance. Rivian will more likely pass into history as the short-lived truck with weird headlights, joining Tucker as the weird car with three headlights, and DeLorean as the weird car with stainless steel and gullwing doors.

  • @williamelkington5430
    @williamelkington5430 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I have to disagree with you on a couple of important points. First, Rivian has been "moving the needle" (in your words) in several respects. The R1T is the only pickup truck to earn the IIHS "Top Safety Pick +" rating from IIHS in 2023, besides the Tundra--I'm including all ICE pickup trucks in this statement (except, as I say, the Tundra). The R1S is the first mid-size (check your dimensions) BEV SUV to achieve the IIHS "Top Safety Pick +" rating. The R1S and R1T are the first BEV SUV and pickup truck to wade three feet of water and stick by this capability in their specs. The R1s are the first BEV vehicles to finish the full Rubicon trail. The R1 vehicles were the best selling family of BEV vehicles above $70K in 2023. Rivian was the first automobile company to introduce four different vehicle models in its first full year of production (2022)--the EDV 500, EDV 700, R1S, and R1T. Second, Rivian does not have a dealership model. It has a direct-to-customer model, with a rapidly growing number of service centers. Third, Rivian is building its own DC fast charging network, which is different from many car companies, with the exception of Tesla and now Mercedes. Fourth, the R1S was recently rated as the best vehicle tested by Doug DeMuro.
    I could go on, but these are the most important points. You have not been paying attention to a company that is writing a new chapter in automotive history. Please pay more attention to them in the future. Thanks.

    • @AllCarswithJon
      @AllCarswithJon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I will be paying more attention in the future, but in the recent past they've also been in a financial free-fall with one consumer product.
      For all the items you mentioned and their going hard-in on the REI crowd, they've been a small player with questionable survivability.
      But their upcoming fleshed-out lineup is exciting.

    • @williamelkington5430
      @williamelkington5430 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AllCarswithJon They have not been “in financial freefall with one consumer product.” They have had two consumer products and two commercial van products for the past two years, all of them BEVs. Sure, they have been burning through a lot of cash to make absolutely category changing products that are the envy of the industry. They have huge credibility with the capital markets as a result. As long as they continue to provide world-beating products, continue to manage cash aggressively, and continue to offer outstanding customer service, there is (and has been) no evidence to suggest that they are in financial trouble. In fact, we have lots of evidence to suggest that (whether other automotive companies or you know it or not) they are in substantially better shape (because of their product, brand, service, and management equities) than many heretofore successful legacy automobile manufacturers. To treat a company as successful as Rivian as not worth your time is to not understand the dynamics of the industry in this period of transition from ICE to BEV.

    • @williamelkington5430
      @williamelkington5430 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AllCarswithJon They have not been in financial free-fall. They are a very well managed company, as my comments above suggest. They have not had one consumer product; they have had two. Yes, going hard on the REI crowd means that they are going up against Jeep/Wagoneer, the off-road trucks from Ford, Chevy, and Stellantis, the Ford Bronco, Land Rover, the Mercedes G-Wagon, and many ancillary others. Off-road capable vehicles are a huge segment of the US market. Discussing questionable survivability, you should include most of the legacy auto makers. Transitioning from ICE to BEV is kind of like transitioning from analog film-based cameras to digital or transitioning from tube-based TVs to LCD based TVs or transitioning from calculators to computer based spread sheets for accounting purposes or transitioning from mini computers to desktop computers. The list goes on and on. The incumbents struggle. Many fail. The newcomers often have the best chance. Rivian has proven again and again that it has enormous capability and staying power. In terms of huge financial losses in BEVs, you could not do better than to look at the legacy auto companies.

      Gotta walk before you can run. The ramp up for their R1 and R1T has been rough and those are low numbers. If they can't do that, how are they going to ramp up to millions of an R3? I'd bet many others will have their compact EVs on the roads before it. I'm pulling for both Rivian and Lucid. The problem with any EV is range. Don't get me wrong for daily commuting the EV is a great. The elephant in the room is for long distances who wants to stop to recharge every 300 miles. The solution for this is the hydrogen fuel cell powered EV. The first automobile manufacturer that provides by itself or in cooperation with another entity a useable network of hydrogen refueling stations will have a head start on sales of non petroleum powered vehicles. Also if everyone has a battery EV what will happen to the power grid when everyone gets home from work and plugs their car in to change. If you're reading this and you're not familiar with fuel cell vehicles Google it.

    Saying Vinfast is more interesting than Rivian? What nonesense is that? Rivian made the first electric truck, its an amazing vehicle with amazing reviews from literally anyone who drives it. Its basically like tesla bit more upscale and better built.
    You say the Rivian wont "stand out" because its not notable? Absolute BS. Rivian is extremely recognizable as an innovative offroad adventure focused brand that is like tesla but better built and adventure focused. Its basically like an electric range rover.
    Why don't you tell me what will and won't stand out out if this kineup of cars - a mustang mach e (sloped crossover), a chevy blazer or equinox (noth sloped crossovers), a tesla model y (an fat model 3, and yes, a sloped back crossover), and a squared off boxy suv shaped crossover that has an immediately recognizable design that says "rivian"? What total horse shit.
    This dude is cheering for gm, ford, and f-ing VINFAST and saying rivian will "struggle to differentiate"? Differentiate my ass, rivian has built their brand off of being the adventure ev conpany. Their entire brand is about ev truck based vehicles that go offroad. And you say "they make the amazon van but you cant buy that" wtf? Hust because you can't buy it means you aren't interested in it?! They're making THE AMAZON VAN which literally will replace pretty much all of Amazon's fleet, and Amazon is one of the largest tech companies in the WORLD and you don't care about it?
    Wow. Needless to say im leaving a dislike. Dude if you see this, stop making reviews based on what companies you like or don't like. Rivian is an amazing company and they're struggling through the same process tesla went through with the model s, x, and 3. Screw your biased af reviews.

For your viewers who don't care about virtue signaling and can see pass the Green Grift, we realize EVs are only for morons. The battery lifespan is just way too short. Even if you are lucky enough to get 10 years out of an EV battery, to replace that battery, if even possible at that point, you are looking at a cost equivalent or greater than replacing an IC engine in a vehicle. Could you imagine what the resale value would be for a vehicle known to only last around 120k miles before its engine had to be replaced? That's what the market value will be for EVs once the market figures this out. Sell your EV now while the public is still largely ignorant on the subject.
