Dushyanth Sridhar, there are several points you make that are simply inaccurate! 1. Whether Carnatic music is purely bhakti-based is debatable! You conveniently stop rewinding at the point in history where it *became* bhakti-based! Its roots were not based in pure bhakti as you claim! It came from Devadasi/Nadaswaram culture. It was also employed in royal courts to praise the monarch who was the patron of poets and singers. In fact, even Meera and Andal (whose songs are sung in Carnatic music concerts) worshipped via human emotions of romance, and yes! - even lust! The fact that these were directed at a "God" figure does not change the essence of their poetry! 2. Sanatanam has room in it for atheists and atheism (Samkhya and Mimamsa philosophies). Why does your "Hindu" music not accommodate the same? I couldn't continue to watch your interview past a certain point, because your basic argument is based on fallacy - that Carnatic music is only a vehicle for Bhakti. Even assuming that's true, "Bhakti" is defined as "love, devotion, fondness, attachment, worship, homage". Nowhere in that definition is there a concrete assertion that the object of such devotion ought to be a Hindu God!
Hello, I'm Shri Venkateshwaran, the presenter of this show. Typically, I refrain from engaging with comments directly. However, given that your remark could mislead others into believing you are an expert on the subject, I feel compelled to clarify to our dedicated community, subscribers, and fans that your statement lacks any real expertise. 1) All the points Dushyanth, a knowledgeable speaker on the topic, made are correct. I've learnt and learning this devotional form of music, from the famous D.K.Pattamal's school and I vouch for what Dushyanth says. 2) Carnatic music is entirely devotion-oriented, and there's no room for debate. The term 'Sageetham' comes from Sanskrit 'Samyakha Geetham,' rooted in the Saama Veda, integral to the ancient and esteemed Hindu Vedic tradition, not related to Christian or Muslim cultures. 3) Bhakti or call it Devotion is the foundation of Carnatic music, and three aspects are crucial. Initially, the Gandharvas, as mentioned in the Puranas-which hold as much significance as the Vedas or Sastras in Hinduism-used this music to venerate deities and divine forms. Moreover, Devadasis were not the original performers of Carnatic music. To understand who Devadasis are: 'Deva' means 'divine,' and 'Daasi' means 'servant'-servants of the divine, residing in temples to sing praises to the divine. It was only after invasions that they suffered at the hands of kings from other religions. Therefore, while Carnatic music didn't start with Devadasis, it's evident that they too used it to honor the divine. 4) Poets often express intense emotions. For instance, Barathiyar in one of his poems say, "தனி மனிதனுக்கு உணவில்லை எனில் இந்த ஜகத்தினை அழித்திடுவோம்," isn't a literal call to destroy the world but a metaphorical expression emphasizing the need to ensure everyone has access to food. Similarly, Meera and Andal's messages were about 'ultimate surrender to the divine, seeking solace at God's feet' rather than indulging in earthly delights or anything that you think is to be so. 5) Sanatan Dharma accommodates atheism, and so does Hindu music. The issue isn't atheism itself but the targeted disparagement of a specific 'Brahmin' community in Hindu religion alone. Atheism is simply the absence of belief in deities, not an active disbelief or denial. A true atheist doesn't single out any community for criticism. Attacking a particular Brahmin group isn't atheism; it's hatred, abuse, and hate speech. In this case it's also Political. 6) Your inability to watch the interview beyond a certain point reflects a lack of tolerance. I don't think anyone else but Dushyanth can put forth a point so much respectfully without hurting or crossing the parliamentary limits. True tolerance would allow you to view the interview despite differing opinions. 7) You argue that devotion doesn't necessarily have to be directed towards a Hindu deity. But did you know Hindus never labeled themselves as such? A name is given to distinguish one from another, and in this context, there is only the One. Thus, without any need for further explanation, Carnatic music, devotion, and Hinduism are inherently connected and always inseparable.

Beautifully and dignifidely explained. Not only is difficult to learn, even to listen you have to learn to listen... Also, others simply cannot afford the time and effort or financially TMK is nuts
Dushyanth Sridhar has put his arguments with the right perspective... I dont think if anybody with commonsense and objectivity will disagree with him. I just want to draw the attention of everybody to this point. TMK's utterances, views, speeches, writings and actions have to be viewed in the light of his desperate attempt to get into the limelight and popularity by doing something awfully abnormal without worrying about the unpopularity he might incur from the Carnatic music community as well as the brahmin community. He is prepared to pay the price for it. He knows very well that losing the goodwill and appreciation of just 3% of the population does not cost him anything material, as he can get the popularity and appreciation from among the major portion of the remaining more than 90% of the population. He has fallen short of his ambitions very much, it appears very clearly. That has affected him. For his deficiency, he wants to take vengeful action against others- the best nearby target is the carnatic music community and the brahmins. His best weapon is hatred against the community by pleasing the followers of atheism present in this part of the country more than other regions, by opposing the community. That will also be an easy bridge to cross to gain popularity. Now he resorts to all sorts of non-common sense writings, speeches, actions to gain popularity. He wants to please the parties like DMK, DK, Congress and all haters of Hindutva. By distancing from 3% of the population, in due course or in a short duration, if he can get the support of a majority of the remaining population, consisting of atheists, non-Hindus,non-BJP, by intensifying his actions outside the carnatic music arena, he will gain what he tries........Now do you see why in his interviews, he emphasises that politics is there everywhere and we (he means 'I' ) cannot avoid it....Thats the undisclosed plan. You may think these are far-fetched.............No....is the answer.
DeeMuuGaa should not be dragged into this Elite Cultured group of Dusyant ji ,,, Let the DMK CROOKS remain in their 4th graded dwellings,,,,let them go to Hell Let's us have Higher thinking/ Vibrations around us.....good for our health too Thanks to the calm and composted interview proceedings 👌
Thanks Dushyant ji. First off the people saying ‘ why Thyagaraja’s god is Hindu god’ - I ask why not. Asking such a question he/ she should have the guts to reveal their name. The jumbled id -sure is TMK himself. Am glad at least we know this thinking process. Also not to forget ‘Krishna’ is definitely is name of a Hindu god. Secondly feel very sad people have sung and listened saints without knowing the meaning of the song/ his works. Thyagaraja was very clear and open -it is only and only Rama for his spiritual and Bhakti life. That is he will take only hindu gods’ names. Period. Nobody has the right to replace namaas of the Lord in Thyagaraja’s works. TMK shd know that there is something called copyright. ( yes after 100 years the rights change- that’s a different discussion ) it cannot be like in Anna Lakshmi vilaku church people have put a cross, or wearing orange robe - it shows they don’t value what they are bestowed with, they want something better, that is Anna Lakshmi and orange robe. Thousands of people must have been fooled but the fact remains that it was Anna vilaku first to start with , same way Thiagaraja and Rama first. TMK can write his own songs with any god or any no god who cares. Because he cannot have his own Kritis, need not tamper Thyagaraja’s works. Indeed making a fool of himself. Above all strangely, when TMK’s rendition takes me very close to Rama, -that - recognition of all pervading consciousness, atma- but look at it such a thing has not happened to him. He is bestowed indeed. Would like to bless him that such a awakening happens to him too and only and only that Rama can make it happen. I am not ready to discuss what is sanatana dharma from imaful-clear vidhandavadam.
Very good interview. Clarity personified. Rightly said. Every performer, must cater to the liking of the audience. If the audience consists of hindus, there is no need to bring in songs of other religions. If the audience is those practicing islam or Christianity, its absolutely ok if songs praise those Gods are sung. Or, if the performer is a 'secular' person, he must perform uniformly in front of audience of all religions. Else, he has no right to criticize any particular community.

TMK says Brahmins are preventing others from enjoying or learning carnatic music. Bharatnatyam also was once exclusive of brahmin performers. But today many non brahmin dancers are practicing and excelling. This is because they like and appreciate. So, carnatic music is open to all, if they liked and appreciated it they will on their own learn it. Example is John Higgins.
Nalla point periyars will not like ramar sung on their stage or spoken inside because ramar is bhakathi is infectious .they won't do this .kannadasan tried to ezhaey paechu, then finally dived onto.writing arthamulla indhu maadhaam .there is no one ruler and one God formula for hindus for periyar or vidwN tmk to chop hindus Don King unfortunately

It is true that once upon a time all communities used to listen to Carnatic music; but when the Dravidian ideology spread, it was they who vilified it to the extent that people started changing stations and channels the moment something like Carnatic vocal, Veena or violin was heard- “ஒரே மொக்க போடறான்”. How can there be performers from a community that doesn’t listen to this genre? Actually the Brahmin community should be commended for patronising and promoting this music. TM Krishna’s stand is as stupid as saying “ there are hardly any North Indian performers in Carnatic music or vice versa”.
Let us keep aside the histroy of Thirunavuku Arrasar and Appudhi Adikalakar or Agathiyar and Ravanam playing Veena to melt the mountain We will take the histroy around 200 - 300 years We known the histroy of Badrachala Ramodoss and the coins given to sultan which is still in Hydrabad museum 2 Thayagiyer singing Nidichala Sugama to cure stomach pain of the king 3 Thayagiyer signing Endhu Thakinadu ( Rama where are you ) When his Rama vigragam was thrown in to the river which came floating after the song Opening of Thirupathi Door of Lord venkateswara when darshan was refused to Thayagiyer We also known what happened in Akber's court and how the sick princes was cured . Histroy of Presana venkatesa Dasar is another example This is slightly lengthy but is true I like to introduce myself as venkatakrishnan s/o Late flute Kalaimamani TK Radha krishnan and grand son of Lalitha dasar who has composed many songs and slogas on Lalitha Devi throgh the grace of Ambal without learning music ( Pavana Guru ,Nandanandana are his popular kruthies ) Lalitha dasar composed and sang songs but he did not have shiya's since he dint learn music from a Guru and he was an executive engineer in PWD My father was a flutist and his teaching of vocal music was restricted to non professional house wife's- he had many such students but will not reach the public because they learnt it has hobby Miracle or coincidence happened On 14th sep 1945 my father sang Pavana Guru in Guruvayur appan temple On that day Chembai was in temple and chembai was so impressed and said to my grand father Lalitha dasar that he will sing all his krithies in each and every kutchery and he also requested him to publish a book on his compositions and thus his krithies became popular without shishyas God had played the role by not only making him compose but also to popularize his krithies This miracle happened because my grand father Lalitha dasar did not have shisyas Further what made illaya raja to meet my father and my chithapa violin vidwan tk Ramachandran to seek permission to include my grandfather's composition Pavana Guru in his movie - Mella Thiranthathu Ksnavu The above are some of the evidences to prove that music is Devine

You are always right DushyantSridhar. 👍👍👌👌
Wonderful video.. Thanks Ji.. 🙂🙏
Let's be straightforward...brahmin community gave importance to learning, be it sastra, or any form of fine arts. Don't blame them just bcz they put the effort while you were sleeping on it.. well spoken brother Dushyanth
Sastras tell bad about arts So its pillai community who gave importance to arts😂

As a music aspirant, I humbly present that the time has come to ignore TMK and his comments. Shri. Dushyant sreedhar really feels and wants to educate TMK and his followers which is going to do some changes in the minds of disciples of TMK it is good.
Beautiful explanation, remember when I was young, humiliation to Sri.Rama , can never forget and forgive the sin committed by that Ramasamy nayakkar. Wondering who named him with Sri Ramachandra murthy's Nama. Thanks Dushyant ji
Mr. Sridhar thank you for your stand. "Raman than mukhyam" Ending perfect👏

Fantastic Interview and points by Dushyant Ji! ❤
Good explanation.
For every art, there exists a disciple. Mr. SM Krishna has crossed the line.
Brahmins are suppressed thro reservations and they are forced to go to abroad for their livelihood. Most of the parents / families are suffering , who are having one/ two child/children. Let Mr. SM talk for this community instead of blaming them repeatedly . Hope he does it .
TM not SM

Beautifully and dignifidely explained. Not only is difficult to learn, even to listen you have to learn to listen...
Also, others simply cannot afford the time and effort or financially
TMK is nuts
🙏🙏VijayHO DSSir stay blessed💐💐🙏🙏

அருமையான பதிவு🙏
Guruji 200% correct👍👍👍

👏👏
Clearly pointed the valid points

Very good speech. Acirvadham shanthi
I support TMK.

இவர்கள் அரசு இசைக் கல்லூரிகளில் சேர்ந்து படிக்கலாமே?
It is true that once upon a time all communities used to listen to Carnatic music; but when the Dravidian ideology spread, it was they who vilified it to the extent that people started changing stations and channels the moment something like Carnatic vocal, Veena or violin was heard- “ஒரே மொக்க போடறான்”. How can there be performers from a community that doesn’t listen to this genre? Actually the Brahmin community should be commended for patronising and promoting this music. TM Krishna’s stand is as stupid as saying “ there are hardly any North Indian performers in Carnatic music or vice versa”.
Very analytical rational and knowledgeable . 👌👌👌🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Let us keep aside the histroy of Thirunavuku Arrasar and Appudhi Adikalakar or Agathiyar and Ravanam playing Veena to melt the mountain
We will take the histroy around 200 - 300 years
We known the histroy of Badrachala Ramodoss and the coins given to sultan which is still in Hydrabad museum
2 Thayagiyer singing Nidichala Sugama to cure stomach pain of the king
3 Thayagiyer signing Endhu Thakinadu ( Rama where are you )
When his Rama vigragam was thrown in to the river which came floating after the song
Opening of Thirupathi Door of Lord venkateswara when darshan was refused to Thayagiyer
We also known what happened in Akber's court and how the sick
princes was cured .
Histroy of Presana venkatesa Dasar is another example
This is slightly lengthy but is true
I like to introduce myself as venkatakrishnan s/o Late flute Kalaimamani TK Radha krishnan and grand son of Lalitha dasar who has composed many songs and slogas on Lalitha Devi throgh the grace of Ambal without learning music ( Pavana Guru ,Nandanandana are his popular kruthies )
Lalitha dasar composed and sang songs but he did not have shiya's since he dint learn music from a Guru and he was an executive engineer in PWD
My father was a flutist and his teaching of vocal music was restricted to non professional house wife's- he had many such students but will not reach the public because they learnt it has hobby
Miracle or coincidence happened
On 14th sep 1945 my father sang Pavana Guru in Guruvayur appan temple
On that day Chembai was in temple and chembai was so impressed and said to my grand father Lalitha dasar that he will sing all his krithies in each and every kutchery and he also requested him to publish a book on his compositions and thus his krithies became popular without shishyas
God had played the role by not only making him compose but also to popularize his krithies
This miracle happened because my grand father Lalitha dasar did not have shisyas
Further what made illaya raja to meet my father and my chithapa violin vidwan tk Ramachandran to seek permission to include my grandfather's composition Pavana Guru in his movie - Mella Thiranthathu Ksnavu
The above are some of the evidences to prove that music is Devine
