The Raw Reality of Your Favorite Bible Heroes

  • Some of your favorite Bible characters were... terrible sometimes.
Abraham lied and said Sarah wasn't his wife. Jacob tricked his father into giving him the birthright instead of his brother. And there are plenty of stories that aren't even appropriate enough to make it into a TH-cam description.
But what is the Bible? A collection of inspiring fables? Or the real story of humanity and God?
For Fr. Mike, this is good news (and it should be for you too). Our favorite saints were just like us. And we can yes to God in all of our brokenness just like they did.

I am on day 83 of BIY. It has been very stressful at times. Thank God, Father Mike is there to explain it. I have learning disabilities and do not understand reading it. I feel so much better after it is explained.

I finished it last week. And started it again yesterday. So worth it. We need it and you won’t regret it once you finish. I’ll be praying for you… please pray for me. 🥰
This time I’m doing it with a nice notebook and highlighters and washi tape. I’m making it more “interactive” and diving deeper. Writing my questions and ideas down and highlighting them to look up or come back to. Now that I’ve completed it as a goal… I am doing it again for deep personal enjoyment in the Word.

Amen Charles! Isn’t He wonderful! Isn’t He gracious!
For me (at this point in my life), the Fathers love is most evident when I meditate on the Agony in the Garden. The tremendous love He has for us is so evident in that conversation He has with His very own Son…in what He is asking Him to do for us.
I think about my own sons and try to put myself in The Father’s role…How I am imperfect and He is not…how my sons are imperfect and Jesus was perfect…what the entire passion experience would be like (from betrayal through crucifixion - since they knew what would happen if He said yes)….
I try to revisit that moment in prayer to remind myself of His Love for us; and of Jesus’ love too, of course.
For me, “the choice” (The Agony), is just as significant as the passion that followed. It’s no surprise that Jesus was sweating blood.

Give me strength Heavenly Father, I come to you today asking for your blessings as a single mom. My husband is in heaven with you. I’m raising my children with strength and courage, despite the challenges I face with my sons both being autistic. Lord as I struggle to pay my rent every month and as I struggle to buy groceries for my children. I ask that you bless me with your wisdom and guidance, as I navigate parenthood on my own heal my lupus and heart disease and continue to give me strength to keep going so I may watch my sons grow into men. ❤

Exactly. The point of God’s chosen (including the apostles) is that He can work wonders with *anyone,* even the schlubs we’re reading about. There’s no excuse for any of us; we’re all called, too.

I think this is my third time around doing BIAY. In a way, I’m glad that the people in the Bible are just people. They are broken just like us and that makes them relatable. I love that. Yet, God was able to use them for his purpose. That means there is hope for us yet. He can still do great things even with us.

This was so helpful! I had a battle with covid nearly two weeks and i had the worst attitude and fell back into my impatient attitude and just felt helpless and resentful and while i continued my daily reading and prayers, i was definitely not acting the same whatsoever. As i began to feel better i regretted my attitude and behavior more and more and have spent days apologizing to God yet i found so much benefit from the rest i actually needed and God never became angry with me, He showed me this was necessary to rest and that a lot of positive actually came from it 🙏🙏🙏

    Amen Fr. Mike! Amen!
    Thank you for posting!
What I love about the Bible is that it is not so much the story of the heroes as it is the story of God. 📖
In parallel with all of the vices of the characters of the Bible we see God’s Goodness.
In parallel with all of the failures of the heroes we see God’s power.
And of course, In contrast with all of the infidelity of the characters of the Bible, we see…
    - God’s fidelity
    - God’s renewed covenants
    - God’s forgiveness ✝️
🙏 We love you God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
Give us true sorrow for our sins.
Renew our faith, hope and love.
Help us to live according to your plan.
    We abandon ourselves to you.
Thank you Lord. Thank you Lord. Amen.

It took me a little while to understand and accept that God truly loves me not "Because of" but "In spite of". Freidrich Nietzsce said, "And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you". The longer we look inward to ourselves w/ clear eyes the more of our own brokenness we will see, and the more we will understand just how imperfect and broken we are and how unworthy we are of The One who is perfect. And yet, He still loves us whole-heartedly. Yes, God loves us because we are his children but even more importantly, he loves us in spite of what we may see gazing back at us when we look into our own spiritual abysses.

Thank you Fr Mike, this was something I have always thought about when people say that God in the Old Testament is more ruthless than the New Testament, but I always saw God as the same because both Old and New always shared similar characteristics of God's character, He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. All the people that I read in the Old Testament always did something bad or there is always something horrifying that happened which was caused by human actions, and how God was so loving each time that He kept loving, forgiving, staying, being patient and guided humans even though at one point He regretted creating humans when Earth was roaming with evil and sins, that is until He gave us His grace through the story of Noah's Ark, how He washed away our sins with the flood, renewing the Earth and humanity. Thank you for this video, it helps me to understand that God's love is fierce, and He doesn't give up on us as easily as we think or know.

    Hi Father,
Didn't know where to leave this information for you so picked this most recent TH-cam. On Day 5 in BIY you mention how Nimrod came to mean something almost the opposite of its biblical meaning. Found the following explanation that I thought you'd find interesting.
In a 1940 cartoon, Bugs sarcastically refers to the hunter Elmer Fudd as "Nimrod," sarcastically comparing him to the biblical figure known for his hunting prowess. Over time, the term "nimrod" became associated with foolishness or ineptitude due to this popular cultural reference.Jan 9, 2019

Nice. However, the Bible is different from other stories, media, and information. At least for me, the Bible generally makes me feel good. It is more than words. Other areas are a mixed bag, whether that is a story, or what is on social media, where a few people / stories are uplifting, but a lot more are the opposite. There is nothing wrong with protecting yourself from situations & people that don't make you feel good, whatever the reason. I am learning that myself.

Is this supposed to motivate me to read the Bible? I couldn’t be less motivated to do so. Despite my asking repeatedly, I have yet to find anyone who can help me to understand the Bible in the way that I’m supposed to, or direct me to something or someone who can. I’ve come to this roadblock after only 27 days of listening to Bible in a Year. I could read and reread the entire book of Job everyday for the next month and still not understand what is happening. Why should I continue to listen to BIY if I have yet to gain any level of understanding?

Something that may help is that the entire Bible is for us to read but it's not all to us. Most of the Bible was written to & for the Jews, not Gentiles. Paul's epistles Romans thru Philemon are for us, Paul is the apostle to the Gentiles (Galatians 2:9) There are dispensations in the Bible & once you understand this, the Bible makes more sense. Always look at the audience that is being spoken to: Example James 1:1 is speaking to the "twelve tribes" (Israel) Main thing is to pray & ask God for understanding.

Not just mere humans either, and from the start let alone come Jesus’ appearance. I can see it all starting with people struggling to make sense of why God rests on the seventh day. In a world created by God wouldn’t his light in the sky keep perfect time? Why are the phases of the moon not perfectly in line with the sun? The whole story then explains that even the One who created the whole world in six days has the right to rest on the seventh, and so should we as we are not slaves. Or something like that? Why we go to church on Sundays on the Roman week nowadays? God is in the imperfections we see as it’s us who do not see with the perfection of God. Take the log from your own eye before the mote in your fellow’s.

The reflection you've shared touches on profound theological themes and questions that have been contemplated throughout history. In Catholic theology, the understanding of God's rest on the seventh day, as depicted in the creation story, carries deep significance. It speaks to the rhythm of creation and the sanctity of time, inviting us to participate in God's rest and acknowledge His sovereignty over all things.
The imperfections we perceive in the world are indeed part of God's plan, reflecting the mystery of His creation and our limited understanding. Going to church on Sundays, the Lord's Day, is a tradition rooted in the early Christian community's celebration of Christ's resurrection, which occurred on a Sunday. It's a day of worship and rest, mirroring God's rest after creation and signifying our participation in the new creation brought about by Christ's victory over sin and death.
Your reflection also reminds us of the importance of humility and self-awareness, echoed in the Gospel passage you cited. By recognizing our own imperfections and limitations, we open ourselves to God's transformative grace and deepen our relationship with Him.
In essence, your contemplation invites us to embrace the mystery of God's plan, to rest in His presence, and to approach life with humility and trust in His providence.

Do you believe the Pope or the Bible, read Romans 1, test every teacher if he is of God.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your perspective. As Catholics, we hold the Bible as the inspired Word of God and recognize its authority in matters of faith and morals. We also respect the teachings of the Pope, who serves as the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church.
In reading Romans 1 and other passages of Scripture, we are reminded of the importance of discernment and testing every teaching against the truth revealed in God's Word. This is a principle that Catholics also uphold, as we are called to seek wisdom and understanding from Scripture, guided by the Holy Spirit.
Regarding the role of the Pope, Catholics believe in the teaching authority entrusted to him by Christ Himself, as seen in Matthew 16:18-19 where Jesus gives Peter the keys of the kingdom and the power to bind and loose. The Pope, as the successor of Peter, guides the Church in matters of doctrine and moral teaching, while always remaining in fidelity to the Word of God.
Ultimately, our goal as Catholics is to align ourselves with the teachings of Scripture and the guidance of the Church, under the authority of the Pope, as we seek to grow in faith and live out the Gospel message in our daily lives.
