I think you just convinced me that I could never work on my dream car. It’s not your fault. The tool you have is patience. 🙂

Great guide. I did wonder if I could pull the transmission to fix bad syncros without pulling the motor and now I know :)

Thanks for video. My throwout bearing became unseated like yours after putting transmission back together. Any tips on seating it again without taking everything apart again?

I'm wondering if one of those fiberoptic cameras ( you can get ones that work with your phone or I believe Harbor Freight has inexpensive ones) would allow to peek inside and re- snap things together instead of blindly fumbling around. Good luck!!

Need advice fast! I have the fiat but not the skills. No one wanted to work on the car here. Finally talked a garage into fixing the car, they said needs a new transmission. After waiting 2 months for the part to come in, they are ready to replace. But the mechanic who will be working on the car says he has figured out that he needs to get to the trans by removing the seats! Doesn't sound right to me, but what do I know. By the way, turned in the repair manual to the mechanic months ago when I originally dropped off the car. Not looking forward to this. But the car was a gift.

hmmm, sounds like you need a different mechanic, even if that's a struggle. It's unusual (but not impossible) for a car to need a whole new manual transmission. If you have a bad synchronizer or bearing a good mechanic would just replace that part. You certainly don't need to remove the seats to remove the transmission. Sounds like you might do a better job of it than them. if it is a transmission problem you might want to try a transmission repair shop. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. Your ideas match mine. Let me see what I can do today. If you don't mind, I'll keep you posted.

The good news is that they absolutely positively promised the fiat would be finally done on Friday.
      Last Friday.
      Then last Saturday.
It's now Tuesday and the mechanics are, again, "sick."

Nice video. Thank you. when you pop off the wood+ metal plate, could you advise about the replacement of the metal plate below? Pink plastic fasteners were broken and screw rusty. Not sure how they go back in. BTW I put in a NEW russian Trans. Thank Goodness for the help of a Patient experienced Fiat man. Not a job for 1st timers no matter what anyone says...+ not a job top tackle alone.

Not exactly sure about the question. I assume you're talking about the panel surrounding the shift lever. Normally the 2 pins just snap back into the console, but if yours are broken maybe try some double sided foam tape?

How high do i need to jack up my 78 fiat to do this? What are the best jacking points?

    • @sonordrum1000miura
      @sonordrum1000miura 3 ปีที่แล้ว

As I recall the jacking points are just behind the front wheels and just ahead of the rears. You don't have to raise it super high, but if you can get it close to 2' off the ground that will give you more room to work. It may be determined by how high your jack stands extend. I put one at each jack point and then leave the extended jack under the car just for extra insurance.

19:20 ish, I've had the fork come off the pivot while the transmission was fitted too, due to having removed the clutch cable and having clobbered the exposed part of the arm accidentally.
I ended up using a USB Endoscope camera poked through the top breather holes in order to see how to clip it back on, hope that nugget of info is useful to anyone else who finds themselves in the same position!

twincamspit Gpod to know... the miracle of modern technology! Getting the fork back on wasn't too hard just by poking around and by feel, but the camera would be a great alternative if a few attempts at that fail.

There is a rubber boot that is supposed to be in the opening for the clutch fork. It keeps water, oil, dirt, etc. out of the bellhousing and off the clutch. The boot can be purchased from any of the regular Fiat parts vendors (MidWest Bayless, Vick's, International Auto Parts, Ricambi, etc.).

Jim Panknin Ah Ha! Thanks. This car didn't have it so I didn't know there was supposed to be one there.

    Did you resurface the flywheel?

Nope, the surface looked pretty good, so I just popped the new clutch on and it worked fine

Anyone live in Central NJ? I have a box of 78 124 parts to sell. New Clutch pedal, cables, universal joins, directional indicator, etc. Let me know. Cheap.
