    About Gabrielle Roth
A bestselling author, movement innovator, and music/theatre director, Gabrielle Roth led workshops and retreats that joined the currents of world music and theater with the ancient pulse of shamanism. Her work has been featured in Yoga Journal, Self, Science of Mind, Shape, Elle, and many other publications. She is the author of the books Maps to Ecstasy and Sweat Your Prayers and of the Ecstatic Dance DVD series.
    About the Wave
On her first home workout video, Gabrielle Roth introduces us to The Wave, a moving meditation based on five universal rhythms that flow through our lives. Gabrielle teaches that each of these rhythms has the capacity to teach, catalyze, and even heal. As we join Gabrielle and her dancers (all non-professionals), we learn to improvise our own unique dance forms using every part of the body, from the inside out.
Sounds True was founded in 1985 by Tami Simon with a clear mission: to disseminate spiritual wisdom. Since starting out as a project with one woman and her tape recorder, we have grown into a multimedia publishing company with more than 80 employees, a library of more than 1500 titles featuring some of the leading teachers and visionaries of our time, and an ever-expanding family of customers from across the world. In more than three decades of growth, change, and evolution, Sounds True has maintained its focus on its overriding purpose, as summed up in our Mission Statement.

I remember the first time I heard this - three of us danced to it on a videotape in a church basement. I understand some of the comments about ego and money etc. but I do believe that sometimes people bring out the best in us by creating a 'structure" for us, maybe to temporarily use, so that we can expand and get over ourselves. We needn't "buy into" everything, but take what we need. I believe that Gabrielle had a gift to offer the world and she did. She did not become a millionaire, nor was she obsessed with herself. She simply followed her path and offered it to the world. I am grateful.

10.500$ tuition. Gabrielle might not become a millionaire. Whoever is leading her company name nowadays, absolutely is. You only have to check on the training structure, you practically have to spend around 30.000$ in tuition, courses and trips around the world just to be considered for training. Even a 200$ fee just for them to look at your first request. It's a shame.

I have loved dance for 50 years. my first lessons were in Ballet at 5 years. Then Disco in the 70's and through to Rave etc. When I found Cuban Salsa & music I struggled with partner work for a few years. Now I travel the UK regally to dance and often travel to Cuba eastern province of Holguin where there is a heavy mix of Afro/latin salsa. I attend dance halls where I I dance with the locals. Amazing ;I strongly recommend to anyone who loves movement & dance.

"Conscious movement" has been my practice long before finding out there were specific forms, like this and Vinn Marti's Soul Motion, and after losing the use of my legs twice (approximately 1 year each time) I found that moving from a wheelchair, or floor mat was MORE than welcome in the space. Our class in LA had many mobility-challenged participants and I would think you would be very welcome in any conscious movement class, WolfeBear. :-)

Actually this type of work has a long intellectual tradition behind it, drawing from W. Reich's work on body energy, anthropology, as well as modern dance theory. Improvised, expressive movement is, according to some theorists, the essence of dance, and also a basic, instinctive need recognised by most cultures except the modern which chains the body to the car and the desk.

I have been dancing her music with my elementary students for a long time. However this is the first time I see her in a video. Now I realize we have been dancing freely and consciously as she explains in the video. The truth is there is actually no need for words here. Her music is so drescriptive and inspiring, it will lead your subconscious mind through an improved dance. Try Eternal dance, Mother night or Ghost dancer.

I agree with that. First let me say I am not a student of the now-departed Ms. Roth. I do, however, have a 15-year background in meditation and private client work in yoga therapy and other methods.I think getting out of the mind and into the body is deeply beneficial, as is meditation, and I've seen people who knew they needed it, but needed to rely on what appears to be "smoke and mirrors" to get themselves into that space at first. Later, they realize it's been there all along and is natural.

she didn't copyright or trademark dancing. she developed a particular approach to it and a brand around it. dj's have their brands and names copyrighted and their particular mixes, etc... buddha didn't exist in a world where plagiarism and ownership was what it is in this culture or this time. or he would have likely had to copyright his teachings just for basic purposes. but a lot of that stuff can be stifling as well and the system may need an overhaul at some point.

I take your point, but I don't like to judge what feels like freedom to others. Maybe random movement feels very freeing to some individuals. Perhaps not to you. There are many kinds of meditation. And I don't think anyone here is confusing her "map to your innermost being" with, say, a genome project ;-)

A friend recommended this to me in Australia. Ok, hate to sound cynical but if this if for everyone then why does this video only have people with exceptional looking bodies and above average looks and dancing ability? Have they spruced things up because this is a promo vid? Or if went along to a session, I'd find people of all sizes, ages, looks and dance ability. If so, then wouldn't it better to have a video that represents the average person?

This video features her personal students at the time. She mentions they are professional dancers and not to let that distract you. Many of her other videos include classes that show the body diversity of her workshops.
I have met very few humans as sincerely inclusive and open to all the variations of bodies as Gabrielle was (and emphatically held as a standard in ge r work). She was amazing at creating safe space for all.
