  • Although many 3D fighting games came out during the 32-bit years, a lot of them have now fallen by the wayside -- this video hopes to dig up some obscure memories, whether it's a Jurassic Park based fighter, a Tekken rip-off, or something that's just plain bad. Enjoy!

    Evil Zone is an excellent game, and criminally under rated. Every character has the same simple, easy to learn button inputs, but they govern a completely unique and complex move set, that varies based on the distance the fight is taking place over (each move input will do one of three different moves depending on whether you're right in the opponent's face, a short, or a long distance away). Some moves are un-dodge-able, some are unblockable, and the fight revolves around using the right tool for the right situation to create enough space to power up.

    • @NeroLordofChaos
      @NeroLordofChaos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the comeback mechanics are insane. At a certain point, it takes longer to ENTER THE CHARGE ANIMATION than it does to charge up to max power...Always liked Setsuna, Midori and Danzaiver myself...Ihudulca/Ihudurca too but she was brutal as a boss though. Insanely agressive and it felt like she recovered fom her attack animations just a smidge faster than the player did.

      @@NeroLordofChaos I liked Setsuna and Danzaiver, mainly because they were the characters in the demo, and I'd learned them pretty well by the time I got the full game. Played a lot of Kakurine as well, mainly because her voodoo doll like hold move used to really annoy my flatmate 😂

    My favourite one you didn't mention is Destrega - a proto-arena fighter from the Dynasty Warriors devs. They have a fully voiced story campaign they dubbed into English...except they forgot to extend or shorten the animations to match the lengths of the new lines, so sometimes characters just sit in silence for several seconds, or the conversation falls out of sync with the animation

    ...damn, now I ought to give Battle Monsters a proper shot. Even badmouthed it once, my bad.
    Evil Zone is kind of a weird thing. Yukes made that game (sure enough you could find the tutorial dummied in one of their WWE games) and the game has a special little movie celebrating the game with all of the VAs doing their acting and whatnot while talking of a sequel that obviously didn't come.
    Kensei (or Bu Gi) did have a couple of interesting movesets. The Seagal clone was a curious surprise though.
    Doing something like this for the N64 sounds fun though I don't think there are many games there. I remember GASP and the character creator, Fighters Dynasty and its point system, Dark Rift which was already mentioned and I think there were another two but that's it.
    If you do make a sequel with PS1 titles in mind though, I'd suggest Fighters Impact, Happy Slap Rhythm Busters, the Wu-Tang game and Shaolin.

    You hit the nail on the coffin about Konami’s fighting game history Kim. What’s weird is they spent tons of money on the arcade only, canned Panasonic M2 fighting game Battle Tryst which had cutscenes by Mamoru Oshii and character designs by Shujiro Hamakawa, who made the character designs for the underrated anime SoltyRei.
    Interesting that Konami’s most successful fighting game has probably been TMNT Tournament Fighter[the SNES Version though even the NES and Genesis/Mega Drive versions are more well known than Konami’s obscure fighters].
    Sad thing is Konami is sitting on a Bloody Roar rerelease or reboot goldmine especially if the Snake Eater Dekta announcement or success of its compilations have anything to say. Damn Pachinko execs

    • @joshthefunkdoc
      @joshthefunkdoc 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dragoon Might is an interesting one in that nobody really thinks it's bad, but it's disappeared from history and even the people who break down other similarly old forgotten fighters tend to stay away from it for whatever reason. That's the one i would suggest people try out besides SNES Tournament Fighters, if they want to try a Konami FG.

    Quite a treat to see EvilZone on here. I won a complete copy of that many years back at my local game shop via a quiz game they held. Went home to play it and I was floored at how weird and campy it was. The scenes in between fights was exactly like a 90s English dubbed anime, it's great.
    I was hoping you'd mention Destrega, that's another 3D fighter on PS1 that a cousin and mine played alot as kids.
    Also Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring was another strange game that was mostly a 3D fighter (featuring Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth and other FF characters!) but it also had a separate RPG and Mini games. Very weird and I still have my copy. I swear Playstation had the wildest library of games.

    @goranisacson2502 ปีที่แล้ว

    Evil Zone is a game that's got a very interesting premise since every character is kind of a different archetype from an action manga / anime: you got your "Power Ranger" type upstanding hero, you got your massive swordwielding dark fantasy hero, a dark urban horror protag who's possessed by his evil sword, the smooth urban fantasy magician that's ruthlessly efficient, the spunky battle series protagonist girl, the soft yet stern shoujou heroine who fights for her cursed love... and everyone's storymode plays out like it's an episode in the chosen characters genre. Even if their personalities don't change, they come across as quite different depending on the "genre" you pick, it's a pretty ambitious undertaking all in all. Even if you don't like the way it plays, it's hard not to admire how thoroughly they sell the vision.
    Alas that it, like Star Gladiator, didn't sell well enough to carry on, even if the teams survived. I really do wonder how come Star Gladiator didn't become a winner... was Soul Calibur just too popular? Or are they entirely unrelated?

And the theme is interesting in a “sounds exactly of its time”, as it feels like a b-side for one of the opening or ending themes for an anime of the time like “Slayers” or any of its sequels.

  • @williamburbidge2407

    For me the best thing about the PS1 was the fighting games! With so many to choose from, often times weirder WAS better. Obviously the exception would be when the weird design was just awkwardly executed, and lacked deftness to its vision, but not in Evil Zone's case, or Star Gladiator. Worth mentioning Dynasty Warriors 1 at this point- a really fun and weird weapon fighter that didn't really know what it wanted to be, but it was cleared Tecmo- or whoever it was- chucked a ton of money at it hoping it would stick; the cutscenes were great!
    God bless emulation, so many people are discovering the PS1 era weirdness, and I'm here for it. Thorhighheels makes a good point that there's a distinction between euro weirdness, and American weirdness. I prefer the euro XD. We had the best mags (Playstation Planet, anyone?)

    i really want to talk about another game that i am not sure on what it was released but it was an anime inspired 3d fighter where the heroes are all kids and they fly around and uses energy blasts, it was a really cool game.
    Still i wonder when he will talk about insane werid games on pc, like XTOM 3D, anyone ever played that game ? it was also in arcades and was actually a pc in an arcade cabinet powered by VOODOO 2 tech, Kim should do a whole video on it.
    wish someone here can identify me that cyber psy fighting game.

      @@TheBroz i don't mean nothing by it, but is this the same case as Jim sterling ? at least Jim i know how he/she looks like, i don't think i ever seen the face of Kim.
      as for Last bronx, i have a lot of good friends that are into fighting game, none of them even heard of Last bronx, it might be popular in some circles but in most parts of the world, it is almost non existent.

    Though this one isn't as "weird" and IIRC was a Japan-only release, Fighter's Impact is well worth checking out. The game "Vs." is sort of a Western reskin of it as it's from the same devs, but Fighter's Impact has a lot more interesting combo mechanics that were removed from Vs. Also quite possibly the greatest OST ever for a fighting game - seriously, even if you don't want to play the game, just look up the soundtrack on here and thank me later!

    I remember playing some Of these games at time on Rental atores (id never had a ps1 or Sat or N64 at their time) and, for all the criticisms these games deserve ... As you said, we have some fun with them at time ✌🏻.
    I was never a skilled or hardcore fighting game player - I was more engaging in advance and check the story. So some Of these games where Fine for me BECAUSE Of their simplicity and lack Of depth. Great list and Memories.
    Obs: Fighting Games on N64 ... This one would be thought. This and RPG are the places the console show least resistance to their rivals. Maybe Going after some japanese games things get more easy - generally a Fighting (not wrestling) game on the plumber platform where memorable generally by basically existing.

    Not sure if this is the best place to ask around, but some of these games really reminded me of it so I need to ask: Does anyone remember an old arcade game where the intro movie was a bunch of furry characters brutally murdering some humans? I never got to see what the gameplay was like because the intro scared me shitless as a kid, but it's been bothering me for over 10 years and I've never been able to find it.

We used to have a pc with Mame32 in it and hundreds of ROMs installed by the previous owner, and when I was a kid I'd play them at random knowing little to nothing about most of them. Running into this specific game freaked me out enough that I didn't try any games I wasn't already familiar with for like a year. Thank you SO much for helping me be at peace with this memory!

    Zero Divide is something I always meant to get back to, iirc I rented the first one at least once bitd. Funny coincidence, was just looking at PS1 fighters again and Fear Effect recently, always wondered what happened to that studio.🙂
    As awkward as home developed 3D fighting games were I have to give them credit for looking quite good most of the time, in contrast Capcom & SNK's first 3D outings look kind of poor for that era of graphics where Star Gladiator looks a hell of a lot better than SF-EX.
    I got Evil Zone bitd for practically no cost Ie. "Take this with you please". I got the same impression from it on how things just kind of happened or didn't, I settled into one character I found that could waggle and mash to victory consistently. Wonderful anime intro though, would have looked a series about that.
    Clone games always have that rub, why not just play the original instead? Forgot about that sequel, I think with Battle Monsters there's a charm to actors and or stop motion animation that is completely lost in polygons.

      @@zenksren8206 Oh no kidding, been meaning to try Mr. Mosquito.🙂 Yeah Capcom seemed to contract out when it was some new tech as they did that with SF:The Movie too. But then they handled the home ports and changed things for the better so they probably should have always handled things first hand. Same with Capcom and the EU computer scene, so many bad arcade ports.
