  • The jazz blues is one of the most important progressions you can learn.
Everyone from Louis Armstrong to John Coltrane played the jazz blues.
So, in this lesson I teach you 10 jazz blues licks that you can use to improvise over the chord progression.
Each of the lines uses my hybird blues scale.
So, you do not have to be concerned with outlining the chord changes yet.
Four of the jazz blues licks are licks that you can take and run with.
The remaining six lines are included as part of an etude over a jazz blues.
So, grab your guitar and let's learn 10 jazz blues licks!

I did almost all the licks. Like the way that the last on is moreless built around chords like Bb or Bb7.
I have a lot of experimenting to do

Some nice phrases in there, Jamie. Mind you, I usually watch your vids for the great tone you produce. Gorgeous looking Yamaha too. Greetings from the north of England.

Jamie..In 1962' started out on a ukulele. Would bang on the piano . Did not know what a chord was..or a note was. Started piano lessons..
Struggled for years to read sheet music..both clefs. It makes sense that you did the Blues/ jazz video in Bb. It makes sense to have a video in Bb.
Something that I noticed for the first time.. The 5,(F) in the Bb blues scale is minor 3rd or one and half steps from the b7..in this case the Ab..which I noticed less than 5 years ago; is a whole step down for the Root. Bb>Ab.

that's a great lesson Jamie. I know its taks years of learning and you never stop learning but i am stating to understand some basic principles and can see how you to play ad sound like jazz in all its forms. What i was getting wrong was thinking lead and rhythm were separate bu i realise the lead/solo comes from the chords. Thank you

Thanks Mac. Yeah you're absolutely right. Lead and rhythm isn't really separated in jazz like it is in say classic rock!

Good lesson Jamie! What were the three chords you were using after the first two licks? analysis? m7b5 subs? I've been using them them to go to the IV9. I really like them, just not really sure what they are theory wise.

Hey thanks. Dm7b5 = Bb9 and the the second chord is also a Bb9. Glad you like them!

Yes, although I’m sure other teachers have similar ideas.

Geeze Jamie I really do love your stuff, but in this particular video... I kind of feel it took like a long time (over 2 and a 1/2 minutes) to get to any meat for 10 seconds, and then another couple minutes to get to some more meat. Just my opinion.
