Wait a minute, but the panelists ID-Ed him from the fact he just had a birthday-which means he had a big birthday in 1951? That would have been his 56th-doesn’t make any sense! This has to be a 1965 episode...
Look at how clear and lucid Jack is at 70, for having been an old-school pugilist...a man who made his beginnings clearing bars in wildcat mining towns. Defensively sound, but a brawler at heart. An absolute monster.
Best defense is a world-class offense! But some bear it better than others; I think Dempsey had that sneaky kind of defense high- pressure fighters sometimes have, where they get hit a lot, but almost never cleanly. Duran, early Tyson, Armstrong, Golovkin....

And since Dorothy Killgallen died on November 8 1965, this episode must have been recorded in 1965, and the date could not have been April 1.
+billy giles That's right. This show was shown sometime in mid-1965, when Jack had just turned 70. As well, that Clay-Liston fiasco they spoke about had occurred on May 25, 1965.
And the shows host also said at the end that Dempsey received a congratulatory letter from president Johnson which we all know happened after JFK's assassination in 1962, so definitely mid 60's

Jack Dempsey was a brutal fighter but, going by this clip and others I’ve seen, he was a gentleman as well. Listen, for example, how he speaks about his opponents, in particular Gene Tunney. The same, as far as I know, was true of Rocky Marciano. Why have we now descended into this shitfest of gobby fighters like Connor McGregor?
This did not air in 1951. One guest asks Jack Dempsey about the recent bout Cassius Clay vs Sonny Liston …. That fight took place in 1964. So this was filmed after.
No, as much as it gags me to say it, neither Clay-Liston fight was fixed. The truth is, when Liston fought Clay, The Draft Dodge-to-ber was about as close to being unbeatable as a human boxer could be. Liston COULDN'T have beaten Clay at that point in Big Mouth's career. But at his best, Dempsey is the one guy who had the various tools to have done every patriotic American a favor and done the job. Or at the least, give Clay a nightmare of a fight.
You say that Clay was "about as close to being unbeatable as a human boxer could be. " FALSE -- he was certainly beatable, as demonstrated by Doug Jones, George Chuvalo, and Ernie Terrell, all of whom went the distance with him in fights that were pretty even. Chuvalo is the one who stormed the ring right after the 2nd Clay-Liston fight yelling "Fix!!! Fix!!!," and if you compare that fight with the Ali-Chuvalo fight, it's hard to disagree with him.
how many people know that sonny liston was around 49 years old at the liston clay 2 fight. liston was scared that the nation of islam people had said they would kill clay because he agreed with malcolm x and had called elijah muhammed to account for having sex with the entry female congregation, over have had babies by him. liston was afraid they would shoot at clay, miss, and hit him. he just wanted out of there. i heard liston speak of this before. yopu can tell he is old, look at how much older he looks then clay. he was also hooked on many drug, he took for mental illness he suffered from. liston may have been the greatest ever, if he would have become champion when he was younger instead of all the wasted years in prison.
James Hull, a lot of what you said is true -- I don't know if he was 49 years old, but he was most likely older than he claimed to be. He was also owned by the Mob, and he had to give up most of his prize money to "Mob Tax." That led some people to think that he threw the fight to win bets he placed against himself, because he could make more money betting against himself than by winning.
everything i said was true because it came out of listons mouth. it is not something i thought up. so unless liston told a lie then it is the absolute true.
That's not 1951, Ali/Clay would be 9 years old. Dempsey would be 56. Yes Dempsey was a legend, but Harry Greb çhased him for years. He had to settle for beating Dempsey's conqueror Gene Tunney.
Dempsey battered Greb in ‘sparring’ many times. Dempsey fought to survive growing up. If you think for a fucking second he was hesitant about Greb, you’re out of your fucking mind.

Keith Johnson what I read is he knew black fighters were better. From what I understand he wasn’t racist, he knew he might lose.
The second Clay-Liston fight, referenced here, took place during May 1965, long after 1951.
And also when it refers to lyndon johnson who was pre-president from 63 to 69.
I'm happy to stand corrected, but I'm confident this was filmed in 1965.
