      Dempsey wins the belt in 1919, the same year Arnold Rothstein fixes the World Series.
      Not saying this fight was fixed by no means at all. This fight was legit....
      It’s just funny that in this same year, someone could pull off the imaginable. Well since they were caught I guess “pull off” is wrong to say.
      the Philadelphia Bulletin published a poem which would quickly prove to be ironic:
      Still, it really doesn't matter,
      After all, who wins the flag.
      Good clean sport is what we're after,
      And we aim to make our brag
      To each near or distant nation
      Whereon shines the sporting sun
      That of all our games gymnastic
      Base ball is the cleanest one!

    I’m currently listening to the most incredible audiobook about Dempsey. The detail about Dempsey and the 1920’s really takes you back to that era. The Dempsey who fought Willard; has there been a more hungry and savage fighter. Talk about fighting yourself out of poverty and going to the top of American life. Men were tough at the turn of the twentieth century. My word weren’t they. Dempsey embodied all of that and more. Dempsey was the icon of the 1920’s. His ring craft and brutal toughness was from another era, even then. Have to say I’m in awe of the man. The Dempsey who destroyed Willard in 1919 would have walked through Tunney and any other heavyweight right up to Liston. Now that would have been a contest; Dempsey of 1919 v Liston 1959. Before anyone says it, forgetting the race card, Dempsey would have destroyed Liston.

      Nah man come on i'm a huge fan of Dempsey and his style but let's be honest he wouldn't have a chance against Liston, Liston would have flat lined Dempsey and to say that Dempsey would beat everyone up to Liston is again very unlikely, he would have had to go through Rocky Marciano, Gene Tunney, Jersey Joe, Floyd Patterson, and even the great Joe Louis in his prime and even Dempsey himself when asked if he ever met Joe in the ring stated "no, luckily Joe came after my time." Joe would've defeated him.

      Carpentier was a better boxer and a better man. He was a legitimate war hero while Dempsey was a draft dodger. Carpentier was also a elegant la boxe Franciose/savate tireur while Dempsy was a brawler . only a man of real courage would move up a weight class to face a slugger like Dempsy. Give that 25 lbs weight advantage to Carpentier and history would have been very different i think. The French produced a great champion and a better man that should be remembered.

    It wasn't actually broadcast from the ring. There was an announcer ringside along with a telegrapher, my grandfather in this case, who sent the announcer's calls via telegraph to the radio station, where the "announcer" read off what was going on and added in live commentary. Baseball and other sports were handled the same way for many years. My grandfather used to "predict" what was going to happen next in a radio broadcast because he code hear the morse code in the background and would say what was going to happen before the announcers did.

  • @wheelinthesky300
    @wheelinthesky300 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    One of Dempsey's weak points was that his lead was a left hook,
    rather than the traditional left jab,
    so his left arm was hanging at an angle to properly deliver the hook,
    which left him susceptible to overhand rights from right-handers.
    Carpentier figured that out, Gene Tunney, a full heavyweight in weight and height,
    applied that strategy to perfection.

    • @andijw79
      @andijw79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      wheelinthesky300 Dempsey was finished and inactive when he fought Tunney. His left arm being low at an angle wasn't really a problem as he had his head to the right of the centre line with his right glove in front of his chin to protect it whilst his low left protects the body. Sure, he got hit with rights sometimes just like he got hit with lefts but that's boxing, you're not in the right game if you never get hit

    • @samtotheg
      @samtotheg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      andi is correct head off the center is what protects the jaw not a high as left hand ...in fact hands high is bad defense !!!

    • @ziggymorris8760
      @ziggymorris8760 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wheelinthesky300 that’s is because a lead left hook needs sufficient push through the ground to generate power, like most lead punches. Dempsey was a lateral fighter to a fault, punches like his take time to set, you defeat a guy like Dempsey by getting to him first and often so he can’t set his hips.
      But Dempsey was furious and there was no one that could match that, Hyatt is largely why he won, like Tyson people were afraid to get in the ring with him.

    • @DevilsAdvocateofnazareth
      @DevilsAdvocateofnazareth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes, but Carpentier nearly ended the fight in the 2nd round (Jack said so himself that if that right hand had been a little lower he would have gone down), but broke bones in his hand, that and a 20 pound weight disadvantage (Carpentier was a light heavy at best) made the fight a lot shorter. He was clearly the better boxer and landed so many straight rights (even with a busted hand) that Jack was begging for a left.

    Seems like both Carpentier and Dempsey kept their lefts way too low, leaving an opening to anyone with a good right. Both Max Schmeling and Joe Louis had good quick rights which would've finished Dempsey. Carpentierhit Dempsey often, just didn't hit hard enough. Ironically, Mike Tyson, who admired Dempsey, always kept his hands up.

    Sorry, but this movie is not OK : there is a mistake between 1st and 2nd round : check the movie, at 1.09 Carpentier's right punch made Jack groggy at 2nd but not at 1st like in the movie, but Jack's skull was too strong, and his hand was directly broken

      Yeah. Too bad Carpentier's punch didn't have more weight behind it. Gunboat Smith had Carp in the same boat when they fought in 1914, but Eugene Corri blew the call.

    Although a star in Europe Carpentier wasn't of the level of the top US fighters.
    Kearns played on his reputation though and managed to arouse enough interest for it to generate the first million dollar gate, even though the fight was effectively a mismatch.
    Dempsey carried Carpentier for 4 rounds before deciding to finish it.

    Dempsey could have smashed & pulverized Carpentier if he really wanted to. The French champion should have been taken out on a stretcher. Dempsey was a ferocious lion with powerful Irish Gallowglass genes who curtailed his famed ferocity for the first 3 rounds. Make the fight more interesting & entertaining. Dempsey's fighting prowess was near supernatural.

      Nate Elliott the question how long would a modern day fighter last against these too. We see world champions gassing halfway through a fight these days, these guys could go 15 or 20 rounds no problem. Modern nutrition and training methods? my arse!

    • @ndelliott138
      @ndelliott138 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, but a modern boxer like Tyson or Holyfield could run circles around these guys. Same for baseball, Babe Ruth would strike out every time against RA Dickey. It's just like the Olympics, Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps blew every other Olympian away since the games began.

      Tex Rickard knew Dempsey was his meal-ticket so he hand-picked his opponents. He didn't want Jack to fight Tom Gibbons because Gibbons could make him look bad. He especially didn't want him to fight Harry Wills or Harry Greb for the same reason.

    This commentator makes me laugh. Early on he admits the proper pronunciation of the challenger's surname is "car-pawn-tee-ay" but goes right on calling him "car-pen-teer." The man is entitled to the dignity of having his name correctly pronounced. Why is it almost always a struggle for Americans to pronounce French names properly?

    Look how many times Carpentier was able to land his right hand. Harry Wills was a better boxer and had more weight behind his punches. If he hit Dempsey as often as the little Frenchman did, Wills would be champ.

      Carpentier was about 20 lbs lighter and nailed Jack so hard in the 2nd round that he broke his hand. Good to keep moving under those conditions.
