I don't agree with a lot of these rankings but I love that Tomb Raider is getting some love. I would 100% recommend playing through the newest trilogy, Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld, and then original trilogy.
I think that Underworld is extremely underrated. I love modern TR games, I like older ones, but Underworld just strikes the right balance somewhere between them. Great enviromental design, puzzles of just right difficulty, everything is so good that it makes it the ultimate TR experience for me.
I don't know it's stupid even the temple Run game seemed better than prophecy the only real argument is that it's kind of boring but when you're ranking stuff from worst to best boring stuff goes in the middle not at the worst side not good not bad just mid that's how this type of thing should Go it goes from bad to mid to good this type of ranking system has been around for a while they have no excuse for not knowing how to do it
Lara Croft GO deserves more love. It's a very good game, but many people don't really care about it. It deserves a better spot on the list. At least Tomb Raider Reloaded got lost or was forgotten
Totally agree! It's exactly how you do a completely new spinoff with new gameplay mechanics but still retain the spirit of Tomb Raider's DNA; puzzle-solving, collecting hidden treasures, maneuvering your way around predatory animals. Not to mention it often goes on sale for about a dollar, and has great soundtrack.
@@jovialnobody The soundtrack and overall feeling are great. In my point of view it's the closest we got to a classic Tomb Raider in recent years. You're 100% right! And it's not a pay to win mobile game. It's so much fun to play and the soundtrack is great to listen to while studying or to relax
Thought the same when I finally got to it after playing Hitman Go. I saw it somewhere and thought "Yeah, let's give it a try" and Tomb Raider Go for me is basically just more of the same in a different franchise,so if you like the principle of these puzzle games, you'll be good with both.
@@NeoLotex I wanted to try Deus Ex Go but sadly it got removed from stores. That was unlucky. The formula itself is good. It's sad that only two games are left
I felt Chronicles was a game full of unused level ideas from the first 4 games. The young Lara section and the snow area were pretty meh but the Colosseum and Von Croy Industries were highlights. Definitely my least favorite of the 6 main Core Designs games.
Plus Tomb Raider and Rise feel like typical modern open world games with too many human enemies instead of creative creature designs from prior titles. It ends up being torture p0rn but as players, we always knew she'll be fine. At least Rise had Croft Manner.
@@getwhatdeserve5039 yeah that's fair, I like the variety Chronicles offers and feel it's a very enjoyable and underrated entry. VCI is excellent and I love the atmosphere of the Ireland levels
@@motionblur-91 probably if I had to rate the main line games, I'd go: 1. Tomb Raider 2 (The unforgiving first level, Venice Violins, the sunken ship, the Barkhang Monastery, the tension of Home Sweet Home at the end and crashing through the windows in a boat during the Venice levels make this an unforgettable game that I visit way too often) 2. Tomb Raider 3 (Brutal but also bold in how it challenges the player like in Area 51, the waterfall raft and hyperthermia in the Antarctica stages) 3. Tomb Raider 1 (Can't deny everything it did for the gaming industry and always fun to get back into but I think the following two games perfected old school Tomb Raider) 4. Tomb Raider Last Revelation (Definitely some bad levels in the latter part of the game but really felt like tomb raiding) 5. Tomb Raider Anniversary (Used to love this way more but they did place a great deal of hallwalls when replacing some sections of the original) 6. Tomb Raider Legend (Fun globe trotting adventure but a bit too easy) 7. Shadow of the Tomb Raider (more old school than the other two titles in the trilogy with a greater focus on puzzles) 8. Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness (Great puzzles, story and setting let down by being undercooked) 9. Rise of the Tomb Raider (more variety and found a bit of its old identity but still a pew pew fest for the most part) 10. Tomb Raider Underworld (Openness was refreshing but pretty forgettable levels with a bad last stage) 11. Tomb Raider Chronicles (Series fatigue and more meh levels than great) 12. Tomb Raider 2013 (Really removed itself from being a Tomb Raider game, good game but nothing like past entries)
@@getwhatdeserve5039 good stuff, I agree with a lot of your points there. I wish i could put TR3 higher as it has some of the best locations and levels, however its way too punishing and unfair to the player. Makes it a slog to play. Has some of the series' highest highs and lowest lows
In the 2013 reboot of Lara, her entire crew but Jonah didn't die. Alex, Whitman, Grimaldi, and Roth were the ones who died. Sam, Jonah, Step, and Reyes all survived.
Don't understand how Shadow was rated lower. Yes, the ending was sloppy and empty, but it was celebrated for the expansion of tombs in contrast to the previous one.
Actually Shadow of the Tomb Raider so to speak is the fleshed out game in a traditional video game sense. I do not understand the low rating either, except based on its storytelling.
They made Lara unlikable, whiney and a complete brat. A far cry from the hero in the first two instances. That made it a big disappointment in my eyes, particularly as we were all waiting years for the conclusion.
I love shadow and put it on par if not better than the first of this recent trilogy. I didn't rate Rise that highly might be the setting that I just didn't click with but might have to replay it one day just to figure out what I missed with it.
Tomb Raider 3 is the one I ALWAYS remember playing the most. The levels were just INSANE. Underworld is also SO underrated, such a fun game. Legends is also really fun. I did like Rise of the Tomb Raider more than the first of the reboot, and I havent gotten to properly play Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but idk... they're fun action games, and have good puzzles, but there's something about the original version TR1 thru Chronicles that's just better. I prefer the olden tank controls with the grid game design.
I got into Tomb Raider during the middle child portion of the franchise making the Underworld/Legend/Anniversary trilogy was my first experience with Lara. So that trilogy will always hold a very strong place in my gaming heart. I think my biggest issue is that the two story DLCs for Underworld aren't available on PC but were only ever on the 360 which really hurts Underworld's overall story and replayability nowadays. The DLC also offered something new with you being able to play as the super powered doppelganger of Lara which was so much fun and a nice change from the base game
I got into TR with the PS1 games, but that trilogy was fantastic. Legend is a fun romp, Anniversary did a ton of cool stuff with those original ideas, and Underworld is the most ambitious take on that classic exploration puzzle formula. Some of those tombs were gigantic, no idea how I beat them without TH-cam tutorials.
Legend is my personal favourite. No TR game has the amount of hours I poured into Legend in comparison. Yeah the story may not be magnificent, but the gameplay was fun and Lara's character was just wonderfully sassy
Legend Lara is also my favorite characterwise. She seems very intelligent and determined but still makes jokes and comments on what's going on. She is clearly having fun.
Legend is way too short and the levels are way too linear. But collecting the secrets / doing time trials to unlock outfits and cheats makes it very replayable.
My personal top 5: 1) TR2 2) Legend 3) Angel of Darkness 4) TR1 5) Chronicles I know AoD had terrible controls but I absolutely loved the lore behind it and the atmosphere (the music alone was fantastic), plus Lara was so sassy and came out with some great lines! And I liked Chronicles because it was the first game I was able to beat on my own when I was younger, so it'll always hold a place in my heart. I do absolutely understand why they aren't high on people's list though. I didn't mind the reboot trilogy but for me it all kind of blended into one and it was very straightforward- I preferred the older style of puzzles, but of course each to their own! So much love for this series through its ups and downs though, truly a masterpeice of a franchise ❤
The unfortunate downside for Angel of Darkness aside from bugs and messy gameplay design is Kurtis Trent and that scene which would be considered problematic with current era sensibilities.
TR2+3 will always be my favourite, but I think TR1 gets a bit too underrated sometimes. Maybe the graphics are hard on the eyes, but the remastered version brings it pretty close to its succesors. Also elements like the Hand of Midas or Doppelgänger Lara were one of the most creative in the OG series. I was pretty surprised how hooked i got, playing the remastered version
True that the OG trilogy made a big impact. So youre right. It was a great game series with outstanding (for that time) visuals and mechanics... But the OG just doesn't compare to the reboot at all. Lara is just a human in the reboot and she grows in to this role...ptsd and all. I mean this girl definitely needs to talk to a specialist after what she's been through. I played all three of the reboots in a series a few months ago and Rise of the TR is the only one I would replay.
@@ItsMeBarnaby you keep bringing up Uncharted. Uncharted having crap controls doesn't mean TR controls got better retroactively The controls are god awful, face it
My personal top 5 ranking: 1. Legend - It was the first Crystal Dynamics one and managed to modernize the formula while retaining all the core pillars. It was diverse, dynamic and... simply stupid fun with some great physics puzzles. Apart from the ridiculous (but a staple of the time) QTE scenes, one of the best TR games, hands down. 2. Rise of the Tomb Raider - The best one of the new trilogy, had an engaging set of open levels, diverse challenges, great story and one of the very few which made me actually feel like an archeologist. 3. Tomb Raider II - The original is awesome, but as said in the video, this one builds a lot on top of it and has some of the most memorable levels in the series. Only flaw to me is the vast amount of gun-toting bullet-sponge enemies, which ruin the fun sometimes. 4. Last Revelation - Best of the original run, the formula perfected. Hardest, but most satisfying puzzles in the series. Good writing. But oh, boy, the pacing is terrible and a lot of levels overstay their welcome (climbing the Great Pyramid, anyone?). Still... great game, also the first one I played. 5. Underworld - Underrated and some might say, generic, but it was a lot of stupid spectacle fun in the same way Uncharted was at the time. For some reason however, Nathan Drake got more attention with his second outing than Lara did with this one, which will never not make me sad. I don't know in what condition Callum was when they wrote this list, but come on - the amount of praise a game at the lowest spot got, compared to the laundry list of flaws cited for some of the higher entries was strange at the very least. Please, proof these things before VO, I love hearing Jess' voice and seeing her smile, but when she has to read something so half-heartedly assembled, it makes me feel sorry for her.
Tomb Raider (2013) is for me at least, the pinnacle of the series, I've only managed to get about 4 hours into Rise, it's good, but doesn't have the same feeling for me. It hasn't managed to hook me like the first part of the trilogy.
At least proofread the bullshit the AI is spitting out. On the original in 9th place: "Although the original is always better than the copy and in most cases the sequels, Tomb Raider's influential industry changing first iteration of everybody's favourite female archaeologist still is." Still is what!? "The only destitution that Tomb Raider II has against it's name is that it won't transcend time." "You're not encapsulated" "Disengage the engrossmant factor" No human wrote this nonsense.
TR2 was the first Tomb Raider I played & instantly fell in love with the character & the franchise. I've played all of them and, while thers's a few swapped places here & there, the ranking is fairly accurate to my own. I'm so looking forward to the updated OG trilogy on current consoles early next year, but would also like a ported version of the Anniversary/Legend/Underworld trilogy as well.
You can play underworld on a series x via backwards compatibility. I bet it’s the same for legend and anniversary. Probably cheaper that way than a new port. Unless they do a graphical overhaul, which I doubt as they would already be classed as hd. It would be nice for a new TR trilogy for current gen
The ps1 era does take a bit more brain power to be a competent player then the new generation that’s for certain. Both in technical ability and problem solving ability.
This. Those games despite their age and clunkiness are special in that sense, they almost feel like puzzle games instead of action-adventures and the satisfaction of finding your way around or solving a puzzle feels so satisfying like you're really discovering something, not the on-rails, action oriented and dumbing down of the new games
@@danigar yep. I don’t want to sound rude just truthful everything has dumbed down from games to music to movies. The decline is to appeal to the masses. It’s just business. It’s taking advantage of the disadvantaged and less skilful less iq person. That’s why I don’t contribute to the purchases of modern games and movies. I wouldn’t say there Not good things in between a lot of bad things but generally speaking it’s fact. Most people do a word search but not a Crossword. A crossword requires more brain power. Tomb raider is the crossword. Business aims for the people doing the word search as they are the mass.
@@goatstix7750 At least if you like puzzle games, there's loads of really made puzzle games these days for that audience. Playing The Talos Principle 2 right now and it's brilliant. Will play Creaks next. And for the new Tomb Raider trilogy, they were forced to put way more puzzles in after the first game (and they were far better) due to the backlash, even if many are optional. I think part of the reason the original Tomb Raider games require more thought is because of the tank controls which aren't really a thing anymore, making even basic platforming a puzzle. Prince Of Persia managed to be a good at that while having slick controls, I suppose.
To me TR2 on the PSX will always be number 1. I mostly played every single game in the series and I‘m happy that my favorite is also very high in your ranking ❤
Somehow, I prefer the TR2-TR5 games (Core Desigh), because of it's puzzles and gameplay. Then it becomes very liniair. The last 3x TR games (Crystal Dynamics) are graphically absolutely superb, but it became more of a shooting game other than a (classic) exploration/puzzle game. To me a good gameplay means I like to play it again and again. I don't have that with the recent TR games at all.
@@rabidK177Ysame quite a few indications she isn't as much a gamer has she tries to portray herself as Plus whenever a game that has descent looking female characters I've noticed almost always ridicules them sometimes I would say outright makes things up just to find fault in such games or characters like a mini anetta
I guarantee the script was written with AI, and Jess has just read it. It is full of nonsense phrases like "You're not encapsulated" and "disengage the engrossment factor" where the AI is pulling adjectives out of its digital ass.
idk much about any of the "older" tr games prior to the reboot and really have no feelings of affiliation for them but i agree with the ranking of the survivor trilogy.
The problem with the reboo series is while they're functionally good games. There's nothing unique about them. And in an era where the majority of games look and play the same that's arguably worse than being outright bad
Tomb Raider 1-3 - I played these games quite a while after they had come out and everyone else had already played them. When I played the first game, I struggled a bit with the controls, but quickly got used to them. The camera frustrated me until I realized that you need to imagine that it's connected to the back of Lara's head with a flexible pole. If there's room behind her, it will be looking straight ahead, but if there isn't room enough for it, the imaginary pole will bend to the side. Once I realized that, the camera movement became largely predictable. I went back and replayed the first game a couple years ago using the Glide version in DOSBox and it actually played much better than I remembered. Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation - I liked the game overall, but what I didn't like was the introduction of certain areas having fixed camera angles where you couldn't even use the look button. Is this Tomb Raider or Resident Evil? It's a 3D game, I should be able to look around in 3D! Some say that this game has the hardest puzzles, but I honestly can't remember having to look up the solution to any of them. That's something I can't say for the rest of the series. Tomb Raider Chronicles - I didn't mind the episodic nature, or the stories of the episodes. I hated that there were even more fixed camera angles, including the escape from the office shown in the video at 7:20. That part had me screaming profanities at the screen because of the number of times I got hung up on objects while trying to do it. My hatred of fixed camera angles is the main reason I have never played the Resident Evil or Dino Crisis games, despite loving the premise of both franchises. Chronicles also introduced the idea of melee combat in one specific scene, something the franchise had never had before, and which I had no idea was even a thing until I resorted to reading a walkthru to figure out how to get past that one spot. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness - I didn't mind the story or the locations. What killed this game for me were the tons of bugs and unfinished textures. And having to play as a different character that I didn't care about. And the fact that they royally f***ed up the combat. Lara now auto-targets enemies, and turns to face them any time her guns are drawn. Meaning it's now impossible to properly maneuver Lara with her guns draw if there are any enemies present. Want to jump out from behind cover, fire a few shots and then jump back? Yeah, not going to happen. Once you target an enemy, Lara's direction changes and jumping back will no longer work because she's now facing in a different direction. ARGH!!! I want to punch the asshole who thought this was a good idea! Not to mention that during one boss battle, you need to manually switch targets, even though I don't recall that fact being mentioned in the manual. Oh, and all the f***ing fixed camera angles that make it impossible to fully appreciate entire scenes. Tomb Raider: Anniversary - I know I'm the odd one out here, but I don't like this game, or the others by Crystal Dynamics. Instead of the camera following Lara from behind, you now have to control it manually, and it NEVER stays where you put it! Place the camera so that you can see to properly line up a jump and the moment you start to run, the f***ing camera moves!!! And where do you want the camera when lining up jumps? Behind Lara so you can see where you're going. So why can't I f***king lock the camera there instead of having the f***ing thing float all over the damn place??? Plus, the camera is just as utterly useless in tight spaces as the camera in the original game. Then there's the level design which somehow seems to make the path you're supposed to take more obvious and more confusing at the same time. Everywhere that you're expected to grab onto is now glaringly obvious, but exactly how you're supposed to jump, bounce, spin, and climb those ledges is about as clear as mud. Just climb here, backflip onto this other ledge, drop down one level, backflip onto the pole, swing around it, flip onto the ledge, shimmy to the side, backflip onto another pole, jump to the ledge and then drop onto the path. Oh yeah, perfectly clear! And how do you strafe and shoot at enemies while retreating if Lara no longer always faces away from the camera? Easy, you just have to manually lock onto enemies, manually switch targets, manually release the target lock. Yup, it sure is easier to have several different buttons to manually manage the target lock, rather than having her do it automatically like in the classic games. And oh yes, the fact that the designers clearly though that gamers are idiots who are too stupid to remember the controls to a game, since it prompts you for every f***ing button press, like all games today. Jeez, are gamers today really too stupid to remember the controls to a game? How do they function in the real world? Is everything in their home labeled with how to use it? Do all their light switches say "Push up to turn on light"? I've never played any of the later games. In my opinion, the gameplay in later games is inversely proportional to how good the graphics look. In another decade, we'll have games that look completely photo-realistic, but the gameplay will consist of watching a 10-minute cutscene, pressing the button indicated by a giant prompt that takes up 3/4 of the screen, and then watching another 10-minute cutscene. :(
I've played 1, 2, legend, and angel of darkness, all when they were newish. The reboot trilogy is far superior to all of the previous games. The first two were good for their time for sure, but the newest three are definitely better.
For me, TR1 is a timeless masterpiece that's worth playing even today. TR2 is quite fun, but was a lot more action-oriented with too many enemies that made the pace, atmosphere and gameplay suffer because of it, and I think most people consider it their fav in the series mainly because of nostalgia. I'm still playing TR3 and I have a love/hate relationship with it.
The original trilogy is less scripted and more separate mechanics coming together, the player being on their own, totally immersed, where everything has a physical function on the character and zero invisible walls.
Tomb Raider fanboy checking in. There's only a couple on this list I don't own. Due to never owning a smartphone. Good list. Not my choice of #1 but I'll let it slide due to the list in general being very good. (your #2 is my #1 like a few other commenters.) Angel of Darkness deserves a special place in hell for being the game that killed a persons love of video gaming forever. A few years ago my daughter's boyfriend told me that his mum played and loved video games in her youth. Until the day she bought AOD for her PS2. (being a TR/Lara fan) Started up the game, played it for 30 minutes in shock and horror at how bad it was. Shut the console down, and NEVER played a video game again. lol
Hm... Tomb Raider Underwold and Shadow of the Tomb Raider are my favorite games of the Tomb Raider series. What particularly impressed me about Shadow was the quality of the tombs outside of the main story and the fact that this continues until the end of the game. On the other hand, I cannot understand the praise for Rise of the Tomb Raider. The game falls into constant busywork in the midgame and offers the most generic game time stretch in my book. My personal ranking: 1. Shadow of the Tomb Raider 2. Tomb Raider Underworld 3. Tomb Raider Legend 4. Tomb Raider 2013 5. Tomb Raider Anniversary 6. Rise of the Tomb Raider 7. Tomb Raider 1996 8. Tomb Raider II (actually I never really liked TR2)
Thanks for this vicarious trip through the legacy of Lara Croft. I love the character and what she means and meant, and some of the games do look amazing. Sadly, I don’t enjoy either platforming or puzzles, so this is as close as I’ll get to playing the games.
TR Chronicles (5) shouldn't be that low: it's realtively short, and the fact that the 4 stories are not being directly related does worsen that perception. But seeing Pierre and Larson again in a beautiful Rome, experiencing a submarine mission, accompany Lara in one of her first horror adventure in a Poe-ish atmosphere and finally, taking a pseudo-revenge on Von Croy... This game is a (literally)little gem and shouldn't be that undervalued. Ps: TR 2 is the best
I agree. Yes, the developers were admittedly doing it for the pay check. Yes, it was so short it would be classed as DLC by today's standards. Yes, it isn't the best Tomb Raider game...but the levels have such personality to them and there were some really cool puzzles. The Rome level was stunning and the Ireland level was so creepy and atmospheric! I still prefer it to the truly unforgivable/painful difficulty and lacklustre story that was Tomb Raider 3. That Pierre line - "Come let us get off this roof, and I will buy you a milkshake." 😂 Tomb Raider Legend is my favourite. The action, the levels, the story, her moveset, the humour... everything. It's just amazing. 🤩
The original trilogy is less scripted, instead more separate mechanics coming together. The player is on their own. Everything has a physical function on the character. No invisible walls.
I remember buying the original, and was blown away by it. Have played every title available, and enjoyed most. As soon as i saw the video, i was thinking I hope Rise is number 1. I couldn’t stop raving about it after completion, it was just like the first time, all them years ago
Definitely agree with Rise of the Tomb Raider being at the top. Although, in tge original trailer you see Lara in a psychiatrist office facing the trauma of the previous title. I would have liked the story to explore that more how her trauma transformed into obsession and drive. Also explore what happened after returning to civilisation and the relationships with other survivors other than Jona as there were so many un answered questions. ❤
I haven’t played all of them, but I at least definitely agree with the order of the reboot trilogy in this list! Rise also has so much replayability with all the available DLC that is frankly so well done and worth the money even when it’s not on sale. There was a TR mobile game released earlier this year that didn’t make it onto this list. I wonder why?
i also agree with the ranking of the survivor trilogy, rise of the tomb raider deserved to be on the top of this list. tomb raider 2013 was already a league of it's own but rise of the tomb raider improved massively in a lot of areas, most noticeably the graphics and lara's model. lara from rise of the tomb raider is the peak design out of all the laras and the most realistic. also the replayability is another thing i like about it, the tr 2013 relied on multiplayer for replayability whereas the 2015 added more side content and post story challenges. it also has the best intro out of any in the series, that icy mountain climbing during a powerful blizzard was phenomenal. i could go on and on why it's the best might as well write a book about it 😂shadow of the tomb raider i initially disliked but overtime started to grow on me after a 3rd playthrough. you'll have more appreciation for the 2nd and 3rd game in the trilogy if you play them on higher end pc specially the lighting and details on shadow of the tomb raider, which also happens to have hdr support.
I have only played the newest trilogy. Out of those, I would say Tomb Raider 2013, the first one was the best. Rise is pretty close. Shadow is........ Well...... It exists.
Such as shame AOD was a buggy mess as it was meant to be the start of a new trilogy. Great story and some interesting new mechanics as well but sadly the og tomb raider died here 😪
One thing about the old tomb raiders rise doesn’t have though are mythical creatures to fight and lots of variety in levels. Not just one snowy set piece.
(Angel of Darkness) There's a bit of a story behind this one. This was a fascinating project, and the first game where you'd get the opportunity to play a secondary character, Kurtis Trent, as Lara was plunged into a darker setting after being framed for murder of her former mentor. The background in gothic France and the villain are great for the time of the release.. BUT the game was rushed and at parts seemed unfinished. There are some bad bugs (even your weapon loadout vanishes in the plot), and Trent himself is underpowered in the segments when he is playable. The controls are stiff, and a lot of interactions which were cut down for clunky exposition dialogue. There should be no way that the mafia boss that you encounter should have all the insight on the villain's plan when you interrogate him. The reason for this? Cradle of Life (the second Tomb Raider movie) was coming out the same year, in 2003. So the game developers were rushed to meet a shoddy deadline, and we all suffered for it. What we could've gotten was probably one of the best entries in the series, but it was, like its villain in the game, left presumed dead and buried. (Underworld) Not a fan of this one. While it's nice that they tried a continuation from Legend, and tying the villain from the first game (Natla) back in as a sort of evil mastermind, I feel like there was some bad writing which could've been fixed with a couple more drafts. Plot convenience that Avalon and Helheim are the same place, and the unrewarding payoff of Lara's mother, et cetera. Even after my first playthrough, shortly after the game's release, I was disappointed that this, as a final entry, was sooo underwhelming. The darker ending where Lara shoots Amanda and leaves her for dead would've been nice if they kept it in. Legend and Anniversary clearly better written. (Legend) Was good. But wasn't that difficult until the final battle with Amanda in the game.
Thing is people that became to love the tank controls and old games are different than the modern uncharted fans...they are so different,i come in the middle,as a kid i enjoyed the old games but i have no intrest to replay them like other series aka crash or resident evil...the new ones are much more fun,but then again mediocore
The subsequent four original Tomb Raider games improve upon the first so much in my opinion. There's a little too much of "pull lever to open door to pull lever to open door..." in the original.
I cannot agree with Tomb Raider Go being the SECOND WORST on this list! The "Go" mobile games are great and lots of fun, it's just a different genre than what Tomb Raider is known to be. It should at the very least be above "Angel of Darkness" which is the WORST main line game in the franchise. Honestly tho, Tomb Raider Go is a great game and worth a try!
I actually agree here, Rise of the Tomb Raider is my favorite. The replaybility is crazy ! And the memorable Endurance mode played in coop.. oh boy I've played this mode with friend and my brother FOR HOURS ! And the time attack mode too. I was actually pretty high on the boards ^^ Then yeah, TR II haha :)
Tomb raider 1-3 is still the best to this day, the remaster will be one of the most anticipated games I've ever waited for. All TR games are good, but none gave me the feeling the original trilogy did.
I absolutely love the reboot trilogy that kicked off with 2013, Shadow included. However, Legend will always have a special place for me as my very first Tomb Raider game and on a brand new system at the time as well. It was such a blast and is still very much worth a play.
“Underworld” was my introduction to the franchise, so it naturally holds a special place in my heart. As soon as I finished it, I started it all over again and have played it twice more since. I don’t have enough experience across the franchise to assess your ranking, but it seems to echo my own thoughts about the games I have played. I’d just put TR (2013) at the very top! (“Rise” suffers, for me, due to its cold-weather setting, which I don’t enjoy in any game-or IRL!-and the helicopter encounter near the end which, as a casual gamer, was numbingly difficult for me to get past. But those are personal quirks. I recognize that it’s probably a superior game to the 2013 reboot. It’s just not something I want to replay.)
I'm old enough to remember when the first game came out. And it did not just signal the coming of an amazing new series, it signaled the coming of PlayStation. TR was the whole reason I jumped ship to PS, and I've never looked back.
Finally a video dedicated to The Icon Legend and The Moment of Video Game History Lady Lara Croft. I feel like whatculture doesn't talk about her that much. Which is crazy cause they're all from the United Kingdom.🤨
I have played 6 of the Tomb Raider games: the 3 famous ones (Legend, Anniversary and Underworld) and the reboots and I loved every single one of them. I am waiting for the next title and I hope it'll be as good as the previous ones.
Nice list but I strongly disagree with putting Rise on the top. May be nostalgia or whatever but TR 2 to 4 are the quintessential TR experience imo. The survival trilogy while good and fun, went too much into action and Uncharted territory lol, while losing what made the original games special.
I've dabbled in a few TR games, but the only one I finished was TR 2013. Tonnes of fun, but some of the puzzles were a real pain in the ass! Thank god for TH-cam walkthroughs! Fantastic game!
I think that Anniversary should be rated higher than Legend! Anniversary had all the right moves, well & focused development and even longer gameplay! Legend was a minor let down- for the fact you can beat and complete it in one full weekend and there was concept gameplay falsely touted as the real thing during the promotion of Legend. To be fair Anniversary should be in the top 5. That is one of the only few remasters in video game history done well and right!
I love the new trilogy and am really enjoying them i cant see how shadow of tomb raider the last and possibly best is so low even if someone said rise story a bit better the last 3 games are the best especially the definitive editions
Ok if she isn't shot at attacked and mistreated and ultimately destroys the terrible bad guys how does the game make sense I think you need to tone down the sexism a bit So she's an iconic female badass but your saying she was abused and attempted SAed and sound as if it was done on purpose to glorify the male race Let this be understood men who abuse women are trash and I would want my little girl to grow up and be a strong woman like Laura but not everything us about the male race oppressing the females shouldn't she be admired for strength and am sure the writer didn't do it that way to be sexist
Criticism for GoL is ENTIRELY about its public reception and commercial success or lack thereof, and not at all about the game itself, this is a really weird ranking video.
For me from best to worst: Rise of the TR, TR 4, TR Anniversary, Shadow of the TR, TR 2013, TR 3, TR 2, TR Underworld, TR 1996, LC Guardian of light, LC Temple of Osiris, TR Legend, TR Angel of Darkness, TR Chronicles.
A few bits I don’t agree with, mainly around the technology available to each game. For example, TR3 & TR2 (which I think should rank first and second) now look very dated (except the remasters) but this is overlooked. The same with GO, which was hamstrung by mobile phone technology but you ranked it lower than AoD, which was abysmal, as was Chronicles. They should have both been ranked at the bottom for sheer. AoD was significantly late to release from memory, and they still cocked it up! GO was a great portable challenge that should have been way higher on this list.
I only disagree with Tomb Raider 2013 being higher than Tomb Raider Underworld. I never finished a TR game in my childhood, so I did that some years ago, I played the main entries one after the other, until the reboot. TR 2013 is a great THIRD PERSON SHOOTER, but it's a HORRIBLE TOMB RAIDER GAME. I played it right after Underworld, right after the second trilogy, all the mechanics, gameplay were fresh in my mind, and I understood why so many people were disappointed by the reboot. I'm sorry but Underworld is a way better TOMB RAIDER GAME than TR 2013.
TR2 was my childhood. I don't think I got very far into the game at all, but oh man do I remember having so much fun in the manor with the butler and the timed training course
Props for not putting Angel of Darkness in the last place. It's absolutely playable with the latest fan patches and after playing it a few years ago, I wished it would've been released in a better state and we'd gotten the full trilogy. One of the most interesting games in the series. Eidos should have never given TR to Crystal Dynamics (although Legend was pretty good)
My top 10 in order 1. Tomb Raider 2 2. Tomb Raider(96) 3. Tomb Raider Last Revelation 4. Tomb Raider 3 5. Tomb Raider Legend 6. Rise Of The Tomb Raider 7. Tomb Raider Chronicles 8. Tomb Raider(2013) 9. Angel Of Darkness 10. Shadow Of The Tomb Raider
I personally would've put 2013 above Rise. After playing 2013 Rise's story was just too bland and cookie-cutter for me. Also... you put the handheld games *below* Angel of Darkness?! 🤨 As a TR stan I must object lol
I believe the Tomb Raider reboot came out the same year as the Last of Us, BioShock infinite, and GTA 5. If that hadn’t been the case, the Reboot Tomb Raider would have won game of the year.
My ranking of the Tomb Raider games would only include the 2 trilogies Legend, Anniversary, Underworld, 2013, Rise and Shadow. But also I would rank the 2 trilogies separately. Ranking the classic trilogy for me would be. Anniversary good. Legend better than Anniversary. Underworld better than Legend and Anniversary combined. Ranking the modern Tomb Raider trilogy. Tomb Raider 2013 good. Rise of the Tomb Raider better than 2013 Tomb Raider. Shadow of the Tomb Raider better than 2013 Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider. While I agree that Rise is a very good game the reason I put Shadow above Rise is because of the challenge tombs in the games. But if you play the modern tomb raider trilogy without attempting 100% then Rise is the better game. But also if you did do all 3 games at 100% then for me Shadow is the better game. But only if you do 100%. Good video Jess. Well done.
The video mentions as one of the changes in "Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris" is "inclusion of co-op mode". But... the first game in the series was also focused on co-op mode, with optional single player. Weird.
My sister only played Tomb Raider games... On PC with keyboard controls! I would watch for hours as she killed dinosaurs and solved puzzles, even if the graphics were super blocky.
Who the hell wrote this? An absurd order, even rating the sub par Anniversary above the original, and on top of that she just slates every single game. This is easily the worst writing What Culture have ever put out.
*I'll always love the more violent and aggressive Lara 😍 DE is my personal favorite but the Endurance mode from Rise is everything I've ever wanted in a TR experience* 👌
That’s really weird because… Lara from the old games is the most violent. As she literally kills innocent people simply because they are in her way of getting an artifact or just in her way (literally smiling right before she murders a man in the end of tr3 AOLC) classic Lara is literally described as a villain by her creator I think you just like BLOOD but you like the more hero version of Lara that cares for others and fights till the end
No hate for Shadow here, it came out the same week as I broke my leg, so probably one of my quicker completions in games from the last 5ish years. I enjoyed all of the rebooted trilogy, but what would have kept Rise from the top for me was the introduction of cards. To this day I still don't understand them, and they didn't really have any place in an adventure game. They just felt like a mechanic shoved in for the sake of it - maybe they were a DLC money spinner for SE, but I never touched them and the game didn't need them. On the one hand, I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned in the recap, but on the other, they seemed so unnecessary and redundant that they're easily forgotten.
What an absolute head scratcher of a ranking. Why are the terrible unplayable gba games ranked as better games then proficiency, go, and the coop series? How did angel of darkness not end up at the bottom? So many entries are "this one was a well made game and a lot of fun" and then the next entry is "this one sucked and isn't worth playing". I get that lists like this are subjective but I feel like there wasn't much of an attempt to make this a universal ranking but rather is tinted by the authors own nostalgia.
Tomb Raider 1 & 2, grounded in reality? The writer must not remember the Atlantean centaurs or Abomination in 1 or Yetis or Guardian of the Talion in 2 😏
"the challenge was vacant" Honestly.... I'd rather play a game that was boring because it was too easy than play a game where I get bored of the first level (opening area) because it's too hard... And a lot of games approach difficulty by making things more tedious. (Damage sponges are peek lazy difficulty that just makes combat tedious)
Like.... Too easy means I can see the entire game and at worse... Get bored... Too hard means most of the game is inaccessible and I should be able to get my money back... And the more time spent playing the game should be treated as me really giving the game a chance before demanding a refund.... And is why I basically only buy games when they're on sale for like 90% off so I'm only risking like $5 on a game that could be inaccessible. (And nobody really does good coverage on the accessibility options for games. Like psychonauts 2 had great accessibility options but I didn't trust the mention of them. The first game was unplayable because of the boss fights and general lack of polish)
Best to worst: 2 The Last Revelation 3 Angel of Darkness if it wasn't rushed Underworld Chronicles 1 Anniversary Legend Angel of Darkness Rise of the 2013 Shadow of the
I don't agree with a lot of these rankings but I love that Tomb Raider is getting some love.
I would 100% recommend playing through the newest trilogy, Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld, and then original trilogy.
I would actually recommend the other way around since the newer games don't really have the feel the older games had
@@AlexKr. As long as you play them! Classics.
@@CesarIsaacPerez yes exactly, I've had my fun with all 3, the og games, the first and second remakes, each have their own charm
Why Anniversary if you're suggesting the original as well? I don't get that
@@deale- Because they are so different even though it's a remake.
I think that Underworld is extremely underrated. I love modern TR games, I like older ones, but Underworld just strikes the right balance somewhere between them. Great enviromental design, puzzles of just right difficulty, everything is so good that it makes it the ultimate TR experience for me.
100% agree!! Had that great feeling of been alone in an ancient place
Facts, Anniversary, Legends and Underworld, those games has the perfect blend of old school and modern.
I agree!!! I also call bullshit on Legend being higher than Anniversary xD
Yes! And also keeley hawes performance on the crystal dynamics trilogy is just top notch. 🤌
agreed. it has good atmosphere and long levels
How did Go rate lower than Prophecy when the script itself had more praises for Go than Prophecy which was all negative criticism?
I don't know it's stupid even the temple Run game seemed better than prophecy the only real argument is that it's kind of boring but when you're ranking stuff from worst to best boring stuff goes in the middle not at the worst side not good not bad just mid that's how this type of thing should Go it goes from bad to mid to good this type of ranking system has been around for a while they have no excuse for not knowing how to do it
Tomb Raider II was one of the most nostalgic games for me growing up. Great times..
Tomb Raider II major flaw is the excesive combat with human enemies. Level design and exploration is way better in TRI and TRIII by far
@@cristianramos5334 I love them all, but 2 is the only one I could easily finish when I was a kid. TR2 definitely has the most nostalgia for me
@@cristianramos5334I agree with TR3 but TR1's second half is actually weak as hell....
It baffles me to see Anniversary and Legends above the original TR1. And Rise as the "best" TR game ever?!😂😂😂
Haha I agree and am still laughing
I wouldn't be too baffled. It's a subjective list
Nice video, personal top 10:
1. Tomb Raider (1996)
2. Tomb Raider: Legend
3. Tomb Raider II
4. Tomb Raider (2013)
5. Tomb Raider: Chronicles
6. Tomb Raider: Last Revelation
7. Tomb Raider: Anniversary
8. Tomb Raider: AoD
9. Tomb Raider III
10. Rise of the Tomb Raider
@@motionblur-91 probably if I had to rate the main line games, I'd go:
1. Tomb Raider 2 (The unforgiving first level, Venice Violins, the sunken ship, the Barkhang Monastery, the tension of Home Sweet Home at the end and crashing through the windows in a boat during the Venice levels make this an unforgettable game that I visit way too often)
2. Tomb Raider 3 (Brutal but also bold in how it challenges the player like in Area 51, the waterfall raft and hyperthermia in the Antarctica stages)
3. Tomb Raider 1 (Can't deny everything it did for the gaming industry and always fun to get back into but I think the following two games perfected old school Tomb Raider)
4. Tomb Raider Last Revelation (Definitely some bad levels in the latter part of the game but really felt like tomb raiding)
5. Tomb Raider Anniversary (Used to love this way more but they did place a great deal of hallwalls when replacing some sections of the original)
6. Tomb Raider Legend (Fun globe trotting adventure but a bit too easy)
7. Shadow of the Tomb Raider (more old school than the other two titles in the trilogy with a greater focus on puzzles)
8. Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness (Great puzzles, story and setting let down by being undercooked)
9. Rise of the Tomb Raider (more variety and found a bit of its old identity but still a pew pew fest for the most part)
10. Tomb Raider Underworld (Openness was refreshing but pretty forgettable levels with a bad last stage)
11. Tomb Raider Chronicles (Series fatigue and more meh levels than great)

I don't agree With Lara Croft Go so low on the List. It's Not your typical Tomb Raider Game but it's a great Riddle Game with i had a much fun.
Honestly it was the best of the new trilogy.
I only played shadow on the hardest difficulty which is why I think it's better in the reboot series. It felt almost like the old ways. Almost
My personal top 5:
1) TR2
2) Legend
3) Angel of Darkness
4) TR1
5) Chronicles
I know AoD had terrible controls but I absolutely loved the lore behind it and the atmosphere (the music alone was fantastic), plus Lara was so sassy and came out with some great lines!
The unfortunate downside for Angel of Darkness aside from bugs and messy gameplay design is Kurtis Trent and that scene which would be considered problematic with current era sensibilities.
angel of what now? 😒
TR AOD is the only game that I played ONLY twice
I honestly thought Legend would be higher on Jess in the video
TR2+3 will always be my favourite, but I think TR1 gets a bit too underrated sometimes. Maybe the graphics are hard on the eyes, but the remastered version brings it pretty close to its succesors. Also elements like the Hand of Midas or Doppelgänger Lara were one of the most creative in the OG series. I was pretty surprised how hooked i got, playing the remastered version
Tomb Raider 2 (1997) is my all-time favorite video game. So much so that I have the TR2 dragon symbol tattooed on my right hand.
Rise of the tr was cool but no way its better than the og trilogy and anniversary which also should be higher
Nah, the OG trilogy was slow and clunky
Go back and play them nowadays and you'll quit before the end of the first mission ,most likely
@@ItsMeBarnaby getting used to clunky controls does not make them less clunky
Absolutely. I think they asked the wrong person about this.
Uncharted having crap controls doesn't mean TR controls got better retroactively
The controls are god awful, face it
My personal top 5 ranking:
The amount of endangered species she must have eradicated would make the most ardent poacher blush.
"The only destitution that Tomb Raider II has against it's name is that it won't transcend time."
"You're not encapsulated"
"Disengage the engrossmant factor"
No human wrote this nonsense.
This.
I don't have that with the recent TR games at all.

idk much about any of the "older" tr games prior to the reboot and really have no feelings of affiliation for them but i agree with the ranking of the survivor trilogy.
I never played any of the originals and I'm not entirely sure why tbh. However, I LOVED the rebooted 3 that came out , absolutely fantastic games.
I'm still playing TR3 and I have a love/hate relationship with it.
but the remastred trilogy that will be available in the 14/02/2024. and you will understand why.❤
The original trilogy is less scripted and more separate mechanics coming together, the player being on their own, totally immersed, where everything has a physical function on the character and zero invisible walls.
The original PS1 games are so much better than the recent Uncharted clones.
Tomb Raider fanboy checking in. There's only a couple on this list I don't own. Due to never owning a smartphone.
Good list. Not my choice of #1 but I'll let it slide due to the list in general being very good. (your #2 is my #1 like a few other commenters.)
Angel of Darkness deserves a special place in hell for being the game that killed a persons love of video gaming forever.
My personal ranking:
1. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
2. Tomb Raider Underworld
3. Tomb Raider Legend
4. Tomb Raider 2013
5. Tomb Raider Anniversary
6. Rise of the Tomb Raider
7. Tomb Raider 1996
That Pierre line - "Come let us get off this roof, and I will buy you a milkshake." 😂
Tomb Raider Legend is my favourite. The action, the levels, the story, her moveset, the humour... everything. It's just amazing. 🤩
I also feel that the isometric entries were unfairly underrated gere. Go, Sun and Osiris look pretty cool.
Tomb Raider 2013> Rise Of The Tomb Raider
funny when Rise come out, people complain it had to much combat gameplay but after Shadow release they now think it the best in the series
(Angel of Darkness)
There's a bit of a story behind this one.
(Underworld)
Not a fan of this one.
(Legend)
Was good. But wasn't that difficult until the final battle with Amanda in the game.
The best by far, and in my opinion will always be is the 1996 original. Sublime.
Tomb raider 3 and Legend are my favourites. I think I love games that have many different locations
I was actually pretty high on the boards ^^
Then yeah, TR II haha :)
Tomb raider, and every game, that meant to be immersive, had to be played alone, but that's me bro..
@@Molix1981 funny how you said immersive, which tomb raider are you referring to then hmm?
Tomb raider 1-3 is still the best to this day, the remaster will be one of the most anticipated games I've ever waited for. All TR games are good, but none gave me the feeling the original trilogy did.
I absolutely love the reboot trilogy that kicked off with 2013, Shadow included. However, Legend will always have a special place for me as my very first Tomb Raider game and on a brand new system at the time as well. It was such a blast and is still very much worth a play.
Tomb Raider Anniversary above the original!? No
Yes.
No
Definitely no! Anniversary is good but not good as original.
@@alpergul2000 LMAO
1: Legend
2: Underworld
3: Anniversary
4: III
5: II
6: Rise
7: Revelation
8: Angel
9: I
10: 2013
Finally a video dedicated to The Icon Legend and The Moment of Video Game History Lady Lara Croft. I feel like whatculture doesn't talk about her that much. Which is crazy cause they're all from the United Kingdom.🤨
I agree, we need more love for the legend that is Lara Croft. Though Jess is very clearly from Australia, not the UK.
I have played 6 of the Tomb Raider games: the 3 famous ones (Legend, Anniversary and Underworld) and the reboots and I loved every single one of them. I am waiting for the next title and I hope it'll be as good as the previous ones.
One of y’all’s best recent videos 😆😆🔥🔥🔥
Nice list but I strongly disagree with putting Rise on the top. May be nostalgia or whatever but TR 2 to 4 are the quintessential TR experience imo. The survival trilogy while good and fun, went too much into action and Uncharted territory lol, while losing what made the original games special.
Tomb Raider 1 is still my favourite game of all time. I don't care if the graphics look bad now
I've dabbled in a few TR games, but the only one I finished was TR 2013. Tonnes of fun, but some of the puzzles were a real pain in the ass! Thank god for TH-cam walkthroughs! Fantastic game!
I hated Legend. It felt like an American team doing a stereotypical James Bond trope on a beloved UK franchise.
So, you admit Osiris is weaker than Guardian, yet you still rate Osiris higher?
1 Anniversary
2 Tomb Raider 2013
3 Legend
4 Rise of the Tomb Raider
5 Underworld
my top 5 tomb raider games.
Tomb Raider... Um.. video games... Uh
Hi Jess 😊
I love the new trilogy and am really enjoying them i cant see how shadow of tomb raider the last and possibly best is so low even if someone said rise story a bit better the last 3 games are the best especially the definitive editions
Ok if she isn't shot at attacked and mistreated and ultimately destroys the terrible bad guys how does the game make sense I think you need to tone down the sexism a bit
So she's an iconic female badass but your saying she was abused and attempted SAed and sound as if it was done on purpose to glorify the male race
Let this be understood men who abuse women are trash and I would want my little girl to grow up and be a strong woman like Laura but not everything us about the male race oppressing the females shouldn't she be admired for strength and am sure the writer didn't do it that way to be sexist
Criticism for GoL is ENTIRELY about its public reception and commercial success or lack thereof, and not at all about the game itself, this is a really weird ranking video.
The list is often a load of nonsense, it has all the hallmarks of an AI written article.
@@smeghead250 It honestly seems like it, the script just doesn't add up.
I have to imagine the Inspector Morse reference did not land with Jess haha
A few bits I don’t agree with, mainly around the technology available to each game. For example, TR3 & TR2 (which I think should rank first and second) now look very dated (except the remasters) but this is overlooked. The same with GO, which was hamstrung by mobile phone technology but you ranked it lower than AoD, which was abysmal, as was Chronicles. They should have both been ranked at the bottom for sheer. AoD was significantly late to release from memory, and they still cocked it up!
GO was a great portable challenge that should have been way higher on this list.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of my favorite games of all time
I only disagree with Tomb Raider 2013 being higher than Tomb Raider Underworld.
I haven't played every TR game but GO should be higher.
Also, I think you missed Tomb Raider Reloaded for phones which was a clone of Archero.
Eidos should have never given TR to Crystal Dynamics (although Legend was pretty good)
Oh, no! You listed Tomb Raider Anniversary higher than the original!? You just alienated every hard core Tomb Raider fan from this video. lol
My top 10 in order
1. Tomb Raider 2
2. Tomb Raider(96)
3. Tomb Raider Last Revelation
4. Tomb Raider 3
5. Tomb Raider Legend
6. Rise Of The Tomb Raider
7. Tomb Raider Chronicles
8. Tomb Raider(2013)
9. Angel Of Darkness
10. Shadow Of The Tomb Raider
it would be great if you could add the name, year and platform of each game when it is being shown. thanks!
I personally would've put 2013 above Rise. After playing 2013 Rise's story was just too bland and cookie-cutter for me.
Also... you put the handheld games *below* Angel of Darkness?! 🤨 As a TR stan I must object lol
Tomb raider 3 is still my favorite
Rise of TR first place. L o L
I had the feeling it will be. What a shame to dare put this game number one.
deal with it 😜
Who the hell wrote this? An absurd order, even rating the sub par Anniversary above the original, and on top of that she just slates every single game. This is easily the worst writing What Culture have ever put out.
*I'll always love the more violent and aggressive Lara 😍 DE is my personal favorite but the Endurance mode from Rise is everything I've ever wanted in a TR experience* 👌
That’s really weird because…
Lara from the old games is the most violent. As she literally kills innocent people simply because they are in her way of getting an artifact or just in her way (literally smiling right before she murders a man in the end of tr3 AOLC) classic Lara is literally described as a villain by her creator
I think you just like BLOOD but you like the more hero version of Lara that cares for others and fights till the end
I felt like Shadow should have been a bit higher. While it is the weakest of the trilogy, it was still a pretty good game in its own right.
I'd put Underworld so much more higher up than nr 10. It's an awesome game with the last confident, strong and sassy Lara
I really loved the last 3 in the modern series. However, my heart will always belong to TR1 and TR2. They were my childhood.
You forgot Tomb Raider Reloaded but don’t worry everybody does lol
Tomb Raider 1 & 2, grounded in reality? The writer must not remember the Atlantean centaurs or Abomination in 1 or Yetis or Guardian of the Talion in 2 😏
"the challenge was vacant"
Honestly....
Best to worst:
2
The Last Revelation
3
Angel of Darkness if it wasn't rushed
Underworld
Chronicles
1
Anniversary
Legend
Angel of Darkness
Rise of the
2013
Shadow of the
This list makes no sense...
Both Tomb Raider II and the Rise of the Tomb Raider were the best of the series.
Gotta say, the jab at Shaymalan was uncalled for.
Am I the only person that thinks Jess looks different in the thumbnails than in the videos? 🤷
Think it’s the camera and lightings 😂she kinda looks dif when streaming too
