    The haters will say, "what a lame video, duh, I knew this stuff." To them I say, "SHUT UP!" I have been a woodworker for nearly 60 years in one form or another (kid robbing scrap piles from houses being built in the 1950's, carpenter doing framing and finish work, cabinet maker, you name it. But until last week the scroll saw that was given to me sat atop a stand in my woodworking shop with a broken blade and would occasionally receive a nasty glance from me with the veiled thought, "if eyes were knives," well you get it. Now because you took the time to present the basics I have a pack of blades being delivered tomorrow and I will know EXACTLY what to do with them and will add scroll sawing to my bag of tricks after some set-up and practice. Thank you Kenny, you are exactly what I needed to start something new. Your work here is very much appreciated.

      Well thank you very much for the kind words this morning Dan. I truly appreciate them. I produce this weekly show with one thought in mind and that thought is, that as long as the show helps one person then it was worth all the time and effort that it takes to film, edit and post it. I don't monetize the show so my viewers aren't subjected to advertisements and because I don't monetize the show, I don't make a dime from it and have no desire to. I do it because I love what I do and I love helping others by sharing what I know. I hope that you have some good luck with the scroll saw but just remember, that it takes practice. There are a couple of scroll saw for beginners videos on my channel as well as a show on scroll saw blades and their purpose and limitations. Please feel free to ask any questions that you might have along the way and I will do my best to answer them to the best of my ability. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for taking the time to leave me a comment. I truly appreciate that.

      I agree wholeheartedly, Dan.
      I have a fair sized shop. In it can be found two high end bandsaws, one for scrolling and one for re-sawing. Also found there is a cabinet saw, 4'x6' carving machine, over-arm router, drum, disk, spindle and flat sanders, two lathes, about eleven routers, three dust collectors and on and on.
      Though I've been making sawdust since around 72 and have done a lot of things others haven't, it remains I, like others, haven't done a lot of things others have. I'd never so much as touched a lathe before a couple years ago, so knew nothing of operating one. Now I can say I've got several miles on one and have done unique things others haven't.
      The scroll saw, strange little machine that it is, was foreign to me too, but unlike the lathe and though I bought my first [used] Hegner about ten or so years ago, I've never really taken advantage of it.
      I, like Kenny and others, enjoy sharing. I dislike imbecilics who mock other for not knowing something they claim to know. In fact, a
      while back a fellow was mocking those who didn't know how to run a drill press in metal. Because of my dislike for bullies like him, I took no small amount of pleasure holding him out for his ignorance regarding my woodwork, copper plating, granite work, electronics and, of course, law.
      So, thank you Kenny, and the likes of Dan for his defense of fine work.

      I enjoyed it too. I've always jumped in, usually deep. I'm multi crafted with a lot of experience but this is a new tool for me. Because I want to build this project soon, I'm 71 in a couple of weeks. It's complex, with different species of woods, glass, copper, zinc and brass. I appreciate your lesson and the quality of the teaching. I'll be back. Lol. Thank you for all your help. I like the trick about the tape/lube. That's a Great one! I just picked up a used but new to me 156" Delta scroll. I of course watched all these "beginner" videos and not one told the story of how not easy scrolling really is. Thank you for being real with us. I dove into the saw with a very simple pattern and butchered it because of the "look how easy it is" videos. However, now I know just where I went wrong. I'll be coming back for more content!

      Scrolling is the most relaxing form of woodworking there is Teresa, but it takes practice. There are very few people out there who have a natural ability to do this well on the first try. People will claim that they are naturals at it but I find it hard to believe. I'm glad that you found the show useful. I try to give a realistic approach to woodworking and that includes showing mistakes and errors and how to correct them. I'm glad that you recognize the realistic approach to this video. Thanks for tuning in to the show and if you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I would be more than happy to help if I can.

    Thank you so much for this informative video on the basics of scrolling. I just bought a used one, with no manual and no one to help me. I’m a female DIYer who loves working with wood, and smaller projects, and my table saw and old mitre saw aren’t helping. I’m excited to learn and create just the basics right now. The info you presented was so helpful for me, especially about the blades. Knowing the basics are important. If you don’t have a good foundation you can’t progress to bigger and better work. Having just done a test run, I can relate what I did wrong to what you explained. Your information is invaluable!

      @@gizmo7877 My reply to you on your comment was posted the very next day after you posted it. There are times that I miss replying to a comment but it's pretty rare. I don't know why you aren't getting notifications about the show being posted because it is posted EVERY Tuesday and Friday. They are not all scroll saw videos but there might be information to help you in them. A while back, TH-cam changed the way they notified channel subscribers. They used to get an email every time the show was posted and now, TH-cam has stopped doing that. They now deem that placing a notification dot beside my channel's name in your subscriptions section is notification enough. Sorry, but I don't control how TH-cam does things. If you have any questions or need to contact me, you can always feel free to email me at kennye@acutabovewoodworkings.com . I hope this helps. I would also check your TH-cam preferences to make sure that your permissions are allow notifications. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Outstanding presentation! Kenny (love the name) not only shows his preferred procedures and methods gleaned from years of experience; he mentions other modalities that might be a tad more effective or comfortable for others. I also appreciate his philosophy that this endeavor is meant to be enjoyable, not a race! A dear friend who introduced me to scroll sawing said that this activity is akin to playing a video game; relaxing, entertaining, rewarding... not work, so don't make it so. Although a novice at scrolling, I am quite experienced and skilled at other woodworking, yet I almost always learn something new when viewing a well produced tutorial; which is exactly what this is. Thank you so much.

    Thank you so much for this video. I just found a nice Craftsman Scroll Saw at the Restore (Habitat for Humanity) stores for 35.00 bucks in great condition and with extra blades. Since I sew, I figured it would be pretty much the same. I broke 2 blades playing with it yesterday and today I was able to cut 2 zero clearance insert for my table saw. I am very satisfied with what I've accomplished just in 2 days.
    Just like I thought. It's just like a sewing machine, but on steroids. I freaking love it! :-)

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good for you for jumping right in there with both feet and giving this a try. The biggest difference between a sewing machine and the scroll saw is that with a scroll saw, there is blade drift and deflection through wood grain and other naturally occurring factors. It takes a little practice to use a scroll saw to overcome those factors. Keep enjoying your new machine. (great deal by the way). If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I would be more than happy to help if I can. Thank you for tuning in to the show.

    Managed to use my scroll saw for the first time today since buying it almost a month ago. I watched this video several times the night before and liked the circle part - feed rate = rotation rate... Yes it is much harder than it looks, I know nothing is ever as easy as it looks, and my first circle would not look out of place in a gearbox. After an hour or so was better. Practice, practice, practice. Really enjoyed it though. Thanks for the videos they are really helpful.

    Thanks a bunch, my brother who lives several states away bought most of the large woodworking tools and stands my husband had in the garage. All of a sudden, I have been getting more and more involved with wanting to work with wood after I bought myself a power tool kit to modify and reinforce a fence line for my dog. I REALLY wish I at least had the miter saw back. But, one thing my brother didn’t take was a Dremel 10” variable speed scroll saw. I just discovered what it was tonight and am ready to learn what I can do with it. You are explaining things so thoroughly and I’m hoping it will make me more comfortable and confident when I do decide to power it up.

    Great instructions Kenny I told my wife to pay close attention and I hope she did. Seven years ago I bought her (on her request) a second scroll saw for the shop. She puttered with it for maybe an hour and couldn't keep the stock down on the up lift of the blade. She got scared of it and has less than two hours total on the new saw now. She knows I like watching your channel and respect you as a woodworker with skill so maybe now I can get her out into the shop with me. Did I say that I enjoyed the video? Well I did.
    God Bless my friend.

      Glad to hear that you enjoyed the show Frank. While most woodworkers find the shop to be a place of masculinity and testosterone, I rather enjoy it when my wife comes out to work on a project. There's something special about sharing your passion with the person that you already share everything with. I hope that your wife does, in fact, get back at the scroll saw and that she excels at it. As I've always offered to everyone on my show, you wife is more than welcome to ask me any questions that she would like if she has problems with her scrolling that you are unable to guide her through. Please encourage her to get back at it. I would love to see some of her creations.

      @@acutabove_woodworkings I have a question. I do models that are cut outs so when I finish the cut need to press them out to release them. If there are fine details sometimes the pieces break which is very frustrating. Can I use a product or technique to get them out easier?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnfast6945 The pieces should never be so tight that they have problems being removed from the cutting. There are a couple of things that could be happening. One, is incorrect blade size and the other is the blade not being square to the work table. The kerf of the blade should give plenty of space for the cutout to be removed. If the piece is giving you a hard time and getting stuck, chances are, your blade is not square to the table and you should try to remove the piece in the opposite direction to when it got stuck. I would then square your blade and try again. I hope this helps a little John.

    • @johnfast6945
      @johnfast6945 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acutabove_woodworkings Thanks I will try that, I will make sure the blade is 90 degrees to the table.

    Thank you for the video; i watched it to the end. i think the part that will help me the most straight away is having a dedicated stand and bolted down. Right now it just hits the work bench when i want and the vibrations and the bouncing deter my desire to play more with it. Excellent info video Kenny!!! I’ve had a scroll saw for years an I’ve only ever touched it once to do a radius on a 2x. I always see this nice work ppl do with scroll saws an always thought it would be easy to do it until I tried. Well let me just say it’s not as easy as one would think. Then I came across your videos an I’m putting that technique in use. Also it wasn’t just your printer on that pattern. I tried printing that same one pattern out an I couldn’t get it to print full crisp lines either and I printed 5-6 pages trying different things. I even cleaned my printer heads thinking that was the problem, well it wasn’t. Anyways thank you again for the info videos you take the time an do but not only due but the instructions you do are amazing.
