Loretta Lynn, Kentucky coal miner’s daughter whose frank songs about life and love as a woman in Appalachia pulled her out of poverty and made her a pillar of country music.

I moved to Johnson County around 30 years ago. My cousins took me to Butcher Hollow. This was when Lorettas brother Herman was alive. He owned Webbs grocery and took care of the house. He took us to the house and let us go in and look around. I sat on Lorettas bed. It still had the handmade quilt on it. The living room wallpaper was newspapers. He was the nicest person you could ever meet.

My mom was born in KY, my grandfather, and a LOT of my family were coal miners. Grandpa died of a massive heart attack brought on by black lung. Mom talked about grandpa working in the Van Meer coal mines. We have lost a lot of family to mining accidents and disasters. Coal miners are a totally different kind of person. Tough, hard working and provide as well as they could for their families. I live in Texas and I am very proud of my Kentucky family roots.

🔥🔥🔥 I always know I’m close to home when I see Heiners bread and Miracle whip salad dressing. I grew up about an hour from Van Lear, nice tour and video.👍🏻

Wow! That’s no shack that she grew up in! I realize there were 8 people living there, but wow, doesn’t seem they were so poor as other coal miner families. Is the home still in the family? When was it last lived in? Any history where/what her siblings have done, besides Crystal? Thanks for such a well job done in all your videos. So happy your channel fell into my feed🎯

I believe the house is a replica of the original one. Most of her siblings followed her into the music business has writers and singers.

Thank you, Heather and Leo for this interesting video, wish you could have gone in, or at least got closer to the house. I have a question, what exactly is a "holler" and how/why did they get that name? This Westerner is curious.😊
