Hi, I was shocked to hear how little TH-cam pays given the huge effort it takes for you to make your videos. Thank you for all your efforts and a particular thank you for your frankness in sharing such personal information so others may learn and make informed decisions. You do it all with such good humour and that's what I particularly enjoy about your videos. All the very best - Joe

So thank you for all of your helpful advice.
Get a drone definitely. They are so easy to fly nowadays, they are virtually autonomous, stick in in the air and put it in follow me mode and it will follow you along the cut. They have built-in obstacle avoidance so wont fly into anything (depending on which model you buy that is, do the research). I fly the Yuneec Typhoon H which is a hex-copter, its a bit too big for what you want. DJI do some nice ones, small which can be landed in the palm of your hand (carefully). l also follow Foxes Afloat and some of their aerial video and photography is outstanding. I love your videos, the banter between the two of you is great. Keep up the good work. Dave M.

@@WeirontheMove Hey there, we bought our Widebeam about 2 months ago. It was a stressful move from one boat to another but well worth it as we need the spare room for when Adrian's kids come visit. Thank you for your very honest answers to our questions. You two are such good sports to share your lives with us. It's apparent you love each other and the lifestyle you have chosen. There's one thing I do not understand: How do you manage having your vehicle where you need it to be when you are together cruising from one place to another?
We always have to move the boat and walk back for the car. So, we worked out that we have travelled over 400 miles in the boat, which means we have walked the same. Our poor feet!

A very interesting, informative and honest video. It is unusual for narrowboaters to talk about how they make money on the cut - but, of course, that's always the number one question in the minds of most viewers. The fact is that it's clearly damn hard to make a decent living when you are a continuous cruiser. If it were easy, then there would be a lot more people living their dream on the waterways. It seems to me that unless one has a ton of savings or a pension, all that happens is that you replace the stress of a job with the stress of worrying where the next penny is coming from. I am sure you are only too aware that not having any cash for emergencies is not an ideal situation to be in. But enough of me being a wet blanket. I wish you all the best and hope that things go well for you. My ears also pricked up when you said you lived in Gosport. I grew up in said town, living in Park Road opposite the Creek, which is a stone's throw from Gosport Park.
A great video and very informative. We have spent the past few minutes discussing how we can make money on the canal. I am retired from the NHS, very early retirement 😁, so we will be guaranteed an income from that, but we would still need something else. Your vlog has got us talking. Thank you. 😁
Thank you for sharing all that! We found you when we began thinking about a widebeam. As you say, there are very few widebeam channels. We may just boost the numbers once we get our boat. Not long now! :)

Thanks for doing this video. It had really helped to answer some question I have about my own boat search, and what to do with the car. So do you walk back to the car after each trip and drive it further up the canal/river? Do you have a bike/scooter to get you back to the car quicker? On the north/south wide beam topic, if you did travel as far north as you can on the southern canals, how far would you need to be transported on a lorry to get you to the northern canals, and have you looked into what that would cost? Are they building a widened canal that will eventually link the north and south? Sorry for all the questions. Hope you’re enjoying the K&A. Rgds Darren
For the car, yes, that's exactly what we do. As for the north/south thing, watch th-cam.com/video/l5acM2y_G9w/w-d-xo.html It should go some way to answering your quastions
Thank yo for your very informative video. We still have a few years to go ( our youngest of 3 will finish school and uni in 5 years time). In the meantime we have a share in a narrow boat. We have been leaning towards a narrow boat except when we watch your videos. Time will tell.

It’s great that you enjoy life on wide beam. I must say that I think it would be quite an adventure. Just as well you have some money coming in. Where do you keep your car while you are travelling around the countryside?
Hi Mark & Julie, great video as always. My wife and I look forward to your channel every week. The nearest we can get to the canals is by having a share in a narrowboat that gives us 4 weeks use per year. Which leads me on to a couple of questions. I would like to do some filming of our escapades over time and wondered what sort of equipment you use to create your vlogs. I will be filming on an iPhone and Gopro style camera, but wonder what spec. of laptop you use and also your preferred software for editing please. Keep up the great work, you're keeping us sane in this manic year. Safe travels.
Hi Bob, we list all the equipment in the box below the vlogs. If you take a peek, the links are there to each product. We edit the vlogs using iMovie, which came with the Mac Book Pro.
I love watching you guys and after listening to this video I'm sorry as a pensioner I can't support you financially other than the measly amount U tube pays you per click. I will however save my bread crusts and send them to you ....no not for the Swans and Ducks ,musn't feed them bread but to keep for emergencies asyou se fit .During WW2 my granny used to have them soaked in boiling water seasoned with either an OXO cube or a teaspoon full of Bovril P.S .the new mike has made a world of difference
Hi Kevin, I was never old enough to stand outside the Apple Corp building in the late 60s, but, I am a Die-hard Beatles fan and a walking encyclopaedia on Beatles trivia. Glad you like the channel
:chuckles: Late to the party on this one (I swear TH-cam hides things in mischievous fashion!) but I just wanted to say what an enjoyable watch it was, as well as being informative. One thing that struck me as I was listening for a pointers on how to make a living whilst cruising is that I wonder if you have considered doing some tutorials about how to build a client list as a freelance writer? It is something I have considered getting into myself but don't really have a clue as to how to get my foot in the door. Also, I just wanted to note, as I am sure all successful married couples already know, that the banter and teasing between the two of you is the essential oil that makes a relationship work :D. If you can't take the wet out of each other then it is not likely you will be able to stand each other for the long run :thumbs up:.
Hi Dallas, it's not something we would consider because we want to keep our content to do with boats etc. Try looking at ProBlogger website. It lists tons of freelance jobs you can apply for. Thank you for your kind comments about the vlogs and good luck getting that writing gig.
Caught up now and watched all your vlogs, loved watching them and helped us make our decision to go wide beam, thanks for all your great videos it’s really helped us and answered so many questions. We plan to move our car with us like you guys do, have you had any problems finding secure parking? Also can you advise, are there any spots to avoid on the K&A for continuous cruising, specifically places that are not secure or have a higher risk of crime? Rich & Jax
We don't know anywhere along the K and A where the crime rate is high. Places like Reading and Newbury have higher crime rates and Thatcham gets a bit of a reputation. We wouldn't moor near Fobney lock. That has a reputation. We don't know any other hot spots, so to speak. We tend to park in residential streets or next to bridges as that seems safe.
Oh and as for purchasing a drone, you should make a vlog with another of your boating buddies that has one and make it interesting for us to watch. I was told to be sure and get one with gps as it will not just fly away.
@@WeirontheMove I am seriously considering buying a boat next year, had enough of all the insanity. Is a widebeam much more difficult to control than a narrow beam ?? I love the ide of the extra space, but I am now sure I could drive a larger boat ? :/ :) x
I own and CC on a 60ft Narra, I still work in the construction industry but would love to be able to 'work from home' It seems difficult to earn a living from scratch using just your God given talents and the internet. 😂 Having no artistic qualities or the art of the written word, probably will seek to buy and sell products or use a small facility I have to manufacture goods. Good luck with your ventures. Happy new year, David.
Hi David, it does help if you can find an income while working from the boat. Land-based jobs restrict your movement and hold you in one place. That said, we know Many boaters who hold down land jobs. A lot of people do buy and sell using a well-known auction site. Good luck with your endeavors. Happy New Year to you.
What a fantastic honest vid,... Honest and proves cruising the cut in la la land doesn’t exist unless ur loaded Lol Excellent vid Keep them coming And well done for making that massive decision on moving onto ur boat, that took guts yet obviously u made the right decision for u both,.. Hats off to u, Love ya vids Keep em coming 👍👍👍
Do you use Mark’s beard for animal fur inspiration 😂 Julie! Looking forward to my artwork purchases 🥰. Didn’t take advantage of the Xmas discount code as you deserve the full amount and more. X
how could the marina justify that price hike..outrageous....love your attitudes to living on the boat and working too...but just think...you get to see all the beautiful countryside...different towns..villages and cities..different weather...has to be great having a change of scenery every day except when moored up ..but then every day is different...I envy you...being retired I wish I could get a boat and change scenery every day instead of looking at docks and big halls where they make submarines...
Hi Mark and Julie, I enjoyed this vlog about your income and outgoings. How much did you pay for your widebeam and if by constantly moving how much would you think you'd need to live if it was through savings 🤔 All the best let's hope 🎅 bring you both a drone...
We paid quite a bit for her, but not as much as a new one. That's a tough question to answer because we just don't know. We do know some people that live off savings, but it is a hard question to put into actual pounds
Hi Guys, what a very interesting video you honestly was very much appreciated,I would imagine the Marina wear you was might find it hard to rent out mornings at that price no way would I pay it ,well not much more to say but thank you for sharing this private part of your life style, can see you both enjoy this way of life love watching your blogs ,stay safe take care,John 🥂💐💜🌈👩🔧😇🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻
Lovely informative video. I make basic videos of days out and it’s so true, editing takes a long time. We thought your paintings were beautiful. Such a talent. Also, good luck with the writing. You didn’t say what type of books/stories you wrote. Perhaps you could leave a message somewhere. Well done to both of you.
Also, I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Mark's book. If you like suspense, thrills, murder, then this is for you!!! I wasn't paid to say that by the way...
Well I really like your videos drone or not I thought I’m not that keen on drone shots really I think it’s a bit too much for me sometimes but your videos are very nice and we’ve decided me and my lovely partner decided that white beams are for us but they don’t so why don’t I don’t understand you have to do me a video or something telling me why or tell him why the narrowboats don’t like the white beams because like you said about it’s about you know and if you’ve got if you’re on the larger side like me you needed a white be white beam I think and I’m really enjoying it and I’m going to look into your painting cause I’d love to do a little bit more water cut your very good very good indeed and I will enjoy your videos immensely thank you very much
Seems like the Marina's are trying to price themselves out of the business. Why would anyone pay that price? 9K. What are your thoughts on giving tourist/ day trippers rides? Do private Canal Boats do that sort of thing to make money? I seen videos of people selling things off of their boats. Flowers/crafts etc.
Unfortunately, taking day trippers invalidates your insurance. Julie does trade occasionally from the boat, but there is little trade with the cover thing
Might sound like a crazy question, but how do you take payment for your art when you sell custom orders online & are continuously cruising? Like I am self employed & make an item to sell online. It's enough to live on, doesn't take up too much room. But I take paypal payments. Can you have paypal without a fixed abode? Also I guess you'd have to make sure you moored near a post office every week? lol
Why don't you get into selling narrowboats at one of the marinas. As a former realtor that's what I'd do. Check it out. Even helping put boat information on line for them.
Thanks for another great vlog with all the info' that a new boater would need. I still don't get how you manage to travel around the canal and river systems with your car following you and it must be able to pay for itself also even a ten year old car costs money, a ten year old Bentley is still a nice car though, lol. Take care and all the best. Stevie
i live in a house stuck to the land to old to change really to old, that was one brilliant vlog right to the point very funny stright down the line truth, your art work is superb and should be on show in a gallery no joking and some of the shops that sell art work i think would be very interested no harm in trying them if they refuse thats there fault not yours there much more than a daub on a wall, you old feller keep on writing nothing beats a good gripping book a good Jack Higgins is my kind of read, keep the vlogs coming keep them real no harm in telling the truth either goes a long way, take care keep well keep safe.
We get post through Post Restante, which is a free service run by the Post Office. Doctors are duty-bound to take you on if they have capacity, even without a fixed address and we have a home address we use for emergencies etc and that's the mother-in-law's home.
@@WeirontheMove How do you obtain post from Post Restante when on the move? For me with no relatives, could I cruise without a fixed address (ie) for registration, driving licence, banking, voting etc?
we use a relatives address for driving license. As for banking, we get everything online so they still think we live in the old house. Voting is easy. You can register to vote at elections with the nearest polling station to where you are. They can't refuse as it is voter suppression.
I know how little one can make from youtube, I make about 50p a day. I worked out I get paid about 2p an hour, There is nothing wrong with widebeams. I would love one if I could cover the whole network.
I see nothing wrong with your boat I love it! Are you getting another dog? I had to do Heimlich on my King Charles this morning who collapsed when choking on his food ok now thankfully. Love your humorous vlogs
It’s true drones to add some awesome footage, but the problem is it’s being done to death. Personally I get tired of it really fast and wind up skipping ahead.
Hi Mark & Julie! It's me again...the white-haired lady from Florida. How far South are there navigable canals? Are there any canals down to Cornwall??? I'm hopping over to Julie's web site now! Thank you!!!
Nice insight into how you operate ..but from 5k to 9k how do they get away wi that bloody robbers ya subs are going right up now .well done . I still miss little Eric snoring in the bk ground he use to cheer me up .Nice one 🐶✌️
You have to cover 20 miles from your starting point in the year (so you can't go A to B to A to B) and, if I remember correctly, you can't return to a mooring for three months.
It has to be what is called Bona Fide travel. You can't bridge hop. The return times vary. In some places, they state no return in the same year and in others you can't return in the same month.
It depends on what trades you have. Some are better for adapting to canal life than others. We know some people who work from the boat, holding down full-time jobs etc.
Love the art work, you should certainly promote that a lot more in your Vlogs, other bloggers do & your paintings are a cut above the rest.....well done👍

I will however save my bread crusts and send them to you ....no not for the Swans and Ducks ,musn't feed them bread but to keep for emergencies asyou se fit .During WW2 my granny used to have them soaked in boiling water seasoned with either an OXO cube or a teaspoon full of Bovril
P.S .the new mike has made a world of difference
Well, Ralph, you just keep watching the vlogs. That's all the support we need. The bread and oxo sounds horrible. But there was a war on, we suppose
Julie... have you or do you take pictures of your favorite bridges/overpasses, and put them to canvases? 🖼
No, it's not something I've ever thought about.
Wishing you a very Happy Christmas & a very Happy New year. Love Jacqui XX
Merry Christmas to you too, Jacqui
Just found you guys. Bingeing to catch up.
A fellow Apple Scruff, I see.
Look forward to following along.
Cheers.
Hi Kevin, I was never old enough to stand outside the Apple Corp building in the late 60s, but, I am a Die-hard Beatles fan and a walking encyclopaedia on Beatles trivia. Glad you like the channel
@@WeirontheMove On Sirius radio, they have the Beatles channel. It started April 2018, and I listen to little else.
Your painting is flipping amazing! I’d like some painting classes please?
Hi Debbie, if you go onto my website www.julieweirart.co.uk and click watercolour school or paint like me, you can find online tutorials
Love the honesty! Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Will do!
Greetings from Texas...after a 14 day mooring, how long do you have to wait to return to the same mooring or can you return to the same mooring?
We think we've answered this comment already. It seems to have appeared twice.
Yes you have. Not sure why it reposted. Thank you!
This vlog is the most truthful of all the vlogs great information wish you all the best with your books Mike and Jane😎😁
Thanks so much!
Thank you ! It
Good to hear your reply too 😎
A very interesting blog this week and thank you.
Our pleasure!
@@WeirontheMove thank you
Just found your lovely channel. Thank you for the great video guys! Looking forward to watching more ☮️⚓️🛟
Thanks so much! 😊
Oh and as for purchasing a drone, you should make a vlog with another of your boating buddies that has one and make it interesting for us to watch. I was told to be sure and get one with gps as it will not just fly away.
That's the plan! All we have to do is convince one of the other channels.
Great, informative video, thank you for sharing with us all. Your artwork is just stunning xx
Thanks so much 😊 Amanda
@@WeirontheMove I am seriously considering buying a boat next year, had enough of all the insanity. Is a widebeam much more difficult to control than a narrow beam ?? I love the ide of the extra space, but I am now sure I could drive a larger boat ? :/ :) x
Your videos are informative, amusing and fun to watch.
Glad you like them!
I own and CC on a 60ft Narra, I still work in the construction industry but would love to be able to 'work from home'
It seems difficult to earn a living from scratch using just your God given talents and the internet. 😂
Having no artistic qualities or the art of the written word, probably will seek to buy and sell products or use a small facility I have to manufacture goods.
Good luck with your ventures.
Happy new year,
David.
Honest and proves cruising the cut in la la land doesn’t exist unless ur loaded
Lol
Excellent vid
Keep them coming
And well done for making that massive decision on moving onto ur boat, that took guts yet obviously u made the right decision for u both,..
Hats off to u,
Love ya vids
Keep em coming
👍👍👍
Thanks, Rich
Great artwork.
Thanks Ted and Sharon
Do you use Mark’s beard for animal fur inspiration 😂 Julie! Looking forward to my artwork purchases 🥰. Didn’t take advantage of the Xmas discount code as you deserve the full amount and more. X
That is so kind or you, Clare. I hope you enjoy the artwork
@@WeirontheMove 🤩
how could the marina justify that price hike..outrageous....love your attitudes to living on the boat and working too...but just think...you get to see all the beautiful countryside...different towns..villages and cities..different weather...has to be great having a change of scenery every day except when moored up ..but then every day is different...I envy you...being retired I wish I could get a boat and change scenery every day instead of looking at docks and big halls where they make submarines...
Every day is different and we love the lifestyle
Hi Mark and Julie, I enjoyed this vlog about your income and outgoings. How much did you pay for your widebeam and if by constantly moving how much would you think you'd need to live if it was through savings 🤔
All the best let's hope 🎅 bring you both a drone...
We paid quite a bit for her, but not as much as a new one. That's a tough question to answer because we just don't know. We do know some people that live off savings, but it is a hard question to put into actual pounds
@@WeirontheMove thanks I appreciate it was a tricky question
Thank you for sharing your lives!
You are so welcome!
Glad you enjoyed it, John.
Maybe you guys should film a normal no cruising day?
We have done a Typical day vlog
Lovely informative video. I make basic videos of days out and it’s so true, editing takes a long time.
We thought your paintings were beautiful. Such a talent. Also, good luck with the writing. You didn’t say what type of books/stories you wrote.
Perhaps you could leave a message somewhere. Well done to both of you.
Thank you so much 😀 I write historical novels. My last one was set in Portsmouth in 1804.
You guys are fun to watch.
Thank you, Richard
Love the video! How do you actually move your car around and park everywhere? Do you have to go back to the car every time you move?
We always walk back to get the car after we move, s we walk between 3 and 5 miles each time
@@WeirontheMove 😮
Also, I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Mark's book. If you like suspense, thrills, murder, then this is for you!!! I wasn't paid to say that by the way...
How kind of you Brian
@@WeirontheMove What is the title Do you write as Mark Weir
really useful guys
Glad it was helpful!
Well I really like your videos drone or not I thought I’m not that keen on drone shots really I think it’s a bit too much for me sometimes but your videos are very nice and we’ve decided me and my lovely partner decided that white beams are for us but they don’t so why don’t I don’t understand you have to do me a video or something telling me why or tell him why the narrowboats don’t like the white beams because like you said about it’s about you know and if you’ve got if you’re on the larger side like me you needed a white be white beam I think and I’m really enjoying it and I’m going to look into your painting cause I’d love to do a little bit more water cut your very good very good indeed and I will enjoy your videos immensely thank you very much
Hi Mandy, it's only a tiny minority that dislike wide beams. We are so glad you are enjoying the vlogs
keep doing what you do. Please.
We will, Susan
Well thank you for your honesty and human
Humorous explanations! Sorry I hit the wrong arrow! I do enjoy your vlogs!
Thank you, Helly
Seems like the Marina's are trying to price themselves out of the business. Why would anyone pay that price? 9K. What are your thoughts on giving tourist/ day trippers rides? Do private Canal Boats do that sort of thing to make money? I seen videos of people selling things off of their boats. Flowers/crafts etc.
Unfortunately, taking day trippers invalidates your insurance. Julie does trade occasionally from the boat, but there is little trade with the cover thing
Hi both , a really interesting vlog!
Q. Do you have to have a home address if you are continuously cruising and liveaboards?
Officially, no, but we use the mother-in-law's address
Might sound like a crazy question, but how do you take payment for your art when you sell custom orders online & are continuously cruising? Like I am self employed & make an item to sell online. It's enough to live on, doesn't take up too much room. But I take paypal payments. Can you have paypal without a fixed abode? Also I guess you'd have to make sure you moored near a post office every week? lol
We use Paypal, Worldpay, and the website, create. You can use a relatives address or a Poste restante addresss
Why don't you get into selling narrowboats at one of the marinas. As a former realtor that's what I'd do. Check it out. Even helping put boat information on line for them.
I like my writing too much, Marilynn
So how can we buy one of your books?. I love reading books, as I am in Australia
They are on Amazon UK, but not sure if you can oder them to be shipped to Australia
Stevie
Hi Stevie, the car is a necessity for Julie's work. It is a bind having to keep walking back for the car every time we move
i live in a house stuck to the land to old to change really to old, that was one brilliant vlog right to the point very funny stright down the line truth, your art work is superb and should be on show in a gallery no joking and some of the shops that sell art work i think would be very interested no harm in trying them if they refuse thats there fault not yours there much more than a daub on a wall, you old feller keep on writing nothing beats a good gripping book a good Jack Higgins is my kind of read, keep the vlogs coming keep them real no harm in telling the truth either goes a long way, take care keep well keep safe.
Thank you, Albert. As our mothers said "Always tell the truth"
How do you receive post, Dr's appointments and a home address when cruising?
Looking forward to watching your unboxing video later
@@WeirontheMove Thank you. Lots of camera problems, but I managed to stitch a bit together.
I see nothing wrong with your boat I love it! Are you getting another dog? I had to do Heimlich on my King Charles this morning who collapsed when choking on his food ok now thankfully. Love your humorous vlogs
Wow! We bet that was scary. We probably will get another dog, just not sure when
It’s true drones to add some awesome footage, but the problem is it’s being done to death. Personally I get tired of it really fast and wind up skipping ahead.
You might not like future footage. We won't flood the vlogs with aerial shots. We promise
I really enjoyed that 👍Catherine x
Thanks so much 😊
Hi Mark & Julie! It's me again...the white-haired lady from Florida. How far South are there navigable canals? Are there any canals down to Cornwall??? I'm hopping over to Julie's web site now! Thank you!!!
Not that I know of, Sue. We are on the farthest south canal at the moment
Nice insight into how you operate ..but from 5k to 9k how do they get away wi that bloody robbers ya subs are going right up now .well done . I still miss little Eric snoring in the bk ground he use to cheer me up .Nice one 🐶✌️
Thank you for watching and commenting, Lee
If you leave a 14 day mooring can u go down canal come back within days ?
You have to cover 20 miles from your starting point in the year (so you can't go A to B to A to B) and, if I remember correctly, you can't return to a mooring for three months.
It has to be what is called Bona Fide travel. You can't bridge hop. The return times vary. In some places, they state no return in the same year and in others you can't return in the same month.
Nice one.
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent video again guys! By the way, Julie's website is www.julieweirart.co.uk NOT com. Sorry.
thank you
You're welcome
If you cant write or paint or anything, it would be quite hard to get to get income cruising all the time
It depends on what trades you have. Some are better for adapting to canal life than others. We know some people who work from the boat, holding down full-time jobs etc.
@@WeirontheMove I hope to get into photography which would be perfect
I have watched but never commented before ! Shame on me ! But that was thoroughly enlightening and entertaining 👍
