Hello, thank you for this, like your customer George I am from the UK. After recovering from bone cancer and multiple fractures I had an idea I might get myself a trike instead of my Fatboy, as I dont bounce as well now and a Harley trike seemed to offer great straight-line braking stability as well as an extra margin of safety on poor road surfaces. Having suffered a bit myself I was so sorry to see the men and women recovering from serious fractures, the pain involved is not funny, it takes toughness and I wish them all well and offer consolation for those who have gone on from this life, they are at least beyond suffering. Anyway shocking to see the Motor Company exposing people to these dangers and a cruel irony that, like me, they were older folks seeking MORE safety.
Yes, fortunately this only affected some 2019 and 2020 models, and if you have the recall done, there should be no issue, other than the normal dangers involved in riding. Does not affect 2018 and earlier, or 2021 and later.
I have a 2019 Tri-Glide Ultra with 13,400 miles. I haven't seen any issues in regards to braking (front or back). Their has been a few times that I've had to brake hard for traffic reasons, and the Trike has performed as expected, in regards to responding correctly & stopping on a dime! Both on wet and dry roads...👊
It is quite possible your Dealership already did the recall update prior to you getting the Tri Glide. I have only noticed this issue with hard rear braking WHEN turning. I too have had the same experience as you...braking hard (front, back or both) it stop extremely well. Well, let me amend that. With front brakes only, the ABS will kick in pretty quickly in a hard stopping situation. Unlike 2 wheelers, the rear brake is more important on the Tri Glide and Freewheeler. Thanks for the comment! 👍
How many people died from HD's mistake that no one knows about because they're not here to tell anyone about it. Had tje same situation with my 15 Limited and going into a death wobble at 70mph on a pretty sharp curve. I couldn't hold it and when it dropped off 4in edge of road onto gravel I cranked handlebars as hard as I could to the right launching off of high ditch. I did that so I wouldn't slide out on the graveled shoulder. Bike had just had 1000 mile service and HD recommended to stealer to tighten neck bearings. My stealer didn't although they said they did. Reason for tightening, HD cheapened up on the neck bearings. Getting rid of Timken's for Chinese bearings and they were compressing due to excessive tolerances. I wonder how many people died because of that? GREAT VIDOES you guys put out THANKS!!!
Glad you like the video! There is no telling how many people have died from all automotive screw ups, but like most companies they go for the cheapest bid on the parts they need in bulk. Here are some videos that you may find interesting where Kevin sits down with Hoodie an HD Manager and discuss issues and truths about Harley - th-cam.com/play/PLb3bvZgbH92-Ah4reUx-xiR-0bIyW7YoA.html
I had this same Triglide, and NEVER had this problem. Here in Michigan, all I do is avoid Potholes here. I took it to Daytona, still had no problem. I believe it’s something with those particular bikes and not the 2019. Ride Safe!
***Please note, this only applies to 2019 and early 2020 Harley Trikes. Both the Tri Glide and the Freewheeler. It does NOT apply to 2021-2022 HD Trikes, or to 2018 and earlier HD Trikes***
This isn't on a trike but on an older softtail model. I had my rear tire replaced at an independant shop.and while there I asked them to replace my brake pads. I got the bike back and maybe three week later on a long ride my back brake started dragging. I pulled over and could barely push the bike. I opened the brake bleeder on the back wheel and had a powerful release of pressure and just a bit of fluid. I checked the master cylinder and it was nearly empty. After releasing the bleeder I wasn't able to get a rear brake back. I bought some #4 brake fluid at a department store and was able to fill and bleed the brake. What apparently happened is whoever replaced my brake pads put #3 brake fluid into the rear brake master cylinder reservoir and the heat from the engine and exhaust boiled it which engaged the brake. Fortunately it happened slowly. I wonder if the trikes, which appear to have a different air flow around the engine and exhaust with the wide rear end might be experiencing something similar?
Wow, glad you got that taken care of without incident. 👍 On the year and a half that the trikes had problems, it was a software issue that was surprising the riders and resulting in a dangerous reaction. I've been riding Harley Tri Glides for over 10 years and well over 100K miles and never heard of the brake fluid overheating. Thanks for the comment!!!
When you slam the rear bike and you turn the trike, you are literally drifting, yes like cars, its the same principle. But inlike a car, the single tire up front do not have a lot of grip. Soooo yeah its just a sudden drift / the part with accuating only one rotor from the two in the back of the trike, thats a problem, and i think thats why harley hade the recall. Ps: I like your videos guys 👌🔥
Glad to hear you're liking the videos! Thanks for the comment. 👍 Yes, if you like to drift, the Trikes can do it very nicely on a wet surface or on a non-asphalt/concrete road. Enough throttle will break the back end loose and it will drift very predictably. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING doing this. The nanny computer that applies only 1 rear brake is very similar to what most automobiles have had for year. Harley's implementation was a little abrupt, with the recall, and later years, it seems to be resolved.
Both my Yamaha and my Buell have all manual analog Brakes. Just a hand lever and a foot pedal .. one for the front brake and one for the rear wheel . Now Computers , electronics or software necessary .
I hear ya. Some folks like nanny controls, and some actually have some benefits, but the reality is that when you give a computer control over your bike, it can be frustrating for experienced riders, and it can go bad if the computer does something unexpected/wrong.
Yes! Kevin spoke with one of the attorneys on this Team back in 2023. They saw the video we made years ago, starting around the 7:55 mark, where we talking exactly about this problem. th-cam.com/video/TL9Xi8rTJ70/w-d-xo.html Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
Yeah, I don't think there were very many instances of accidents because of this, but really have no way of knowing. The minute you start involving computers controlling what happens to throttle and braking, there is always a chance of unintended consequences. Usually HD takes many years to make a change that is for the better, but with this, they jumped on it pretty quickly. No one should have any problem...it was just 2019 Trikes, and the first part of 2020 Trikes that had this issue and it is resolved by taking it to a dealership and having them flash the software upgrade.
Great info here. Imagine maybe this is 1 of the reasons behind a change of the ECM on the 21 models, HD did something different because they knew they had an on going problem with the original software and an ECM and BCM that could not support the first new flash? Makes me suspicious
Hey Jack, thank you for your comment and thoughts. We are going to have a 2021 on the Dyno later this month to poke around in the new ECM. (memories of doing that with your M8 years ago) Quite possibly the older computers had trouble handling all the new Nanny systems. But it does seem like they have it handled now. Like @Todd Gittins said, Old School Rules. These new systems are doing things that we cannot adjust and control like a carb, or even the EFI with the PV.
@@jackklarich7045 Yes, it is going to be great having the dyno at the shop for two days of testing, and then one day during the open house. It is unfortunate it is only for 2 wheelers, but maybe next time we can find a mobile dyno for 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers.
I picked up a 2020 CVO Trike in Sept. and it was a previously owned model with 1200mi on it. ( before I was aware of the traction control issue.) The Harley dealer said they bought it from an Indian dealer in Charlotte,NC. I dont know why it ended up at the Indian dealer with only 1200mi on it, but the traction control on my trike is turned off completely. I do not get any lights in the dashboard when I press the switch. Im not sure what the selling dealer did before I bought it, but i prefer it not being on.
Interesting. You may still be under factory warranty to have a Dealership plug it into their digital tech to see what the status of everything...what all is disabled, does it have the latest firmware update, etc.
Tracking of two rear wheels is different during a turn where one where one wheel turns faster than the other to complete a larger distance to complete the turn . It may be the abs system gets confused and slows the faster wheel which in effect will cause an opposite direction turn
I am trying very hard to feel ok about getting on the back of my sister's 2021 CVO Triglide after hearing about this. Yikes. Those of us who are already leery about riding a bike find this very troubling.
In the 1970's another motorcycle company created these fun off-road toys called All Terrain Cycles using the tricycle design of two wheels in the rear and one in the front. In the 1980's, they got the crap sue out of them due to this design's inherent instability in corners, especially while braking or on uneven terrain. Even though Honda took the brunt of the legal troubles, all the Japanese manufacturers were making these models and QUICKLY phased them out when they saw Honda's painful loss. This lawsuit ended the three-wheel design's reign as a viable design for commercially available powered vehicles. Until people started making motorcycle conversion kits to make faster, heavier, three-wheeled motorcycles - of the same inherently unstable design. These kits were 'aftermarket' and very much a 'the liability is on you' vehicle modification. But, it provided more stability than just two wheels in a straight-line and while stopped. Then HD decided to use this design for a full-on production model - the Tri-Glides. I'm not going to knock HD. They took a market cue and ran with it. However, they should have looked at the history of the Honda ATCs and what happened there. Trikes, with a single leading wheel, is an inherently unstable design. In high-speed cornering, or evasive maneuvers, especially under heavy braking, this design is prone to tipping to the outside of a turn. The result is the trike tries to 'eject' the rider to the front outer side of the bike, only making the problem worse. At slower speeds, the riders(s) can wind up trapped under the trike. At higher speeds, it's much, much worse. It's physics and I don't know why ANY company thinks this design is a good idea. There are not enough 'software algorithms' to fix the instability of this design!! This is a problem that cannot be overcome! The 'reverse trike' design, where the two wheels are in front and the third wheel is following, like Can-Am's Spyder or Polaris' SlingShot, is inherently stable and safer in almost every way!! Sure, it's not as cool looking as the Tri-Glide's design and would require HD to completely re-engineer their platform to make a viable product, but at least it would be stable. It wouldn't be as attractive, but it would not be the huge liability the 'wheel-in-front' design is. Good luck to all the Tri-Glide owners out there!! Be careful when cornering or in emergency situations!! And Good luck to HD with this design!! One day they will lose BIG TIME simply on the principle of 'didn't you see what happened to Honda?!?!?' And I do mean bigger than the $287 Million loss they were recently handed over this model.
Different Strokes for Different Folks!!! Can-Am Spyder's or other bikes with two wheels in the front and one in the back can tip over too. Go to the 3:57 minute mark and the 4:02 minute mark in the video link below and you can see two different Can-Am's tipped over in spite of their anti roll bar. - th-cam.com/video/S91qYTjW_Xg/w-d-xo.html Can- Am's have an anti roll bar just like Harley Trikes do. Harley just calls it a Pan Hard Rod. The above video link would be worth watching to help understand the suspension on a three wheel bike. You may also find this video useful/interesting - th-cam.com/video/0fJR4mM17mY/w-d-xo.html It is important to take training courses and know how to ride a three wheel motorcycle. @@DKCustomProducts Thank you for the detailed response! I absolutely agree!! Different strokes for different folks! 100% Almost any vehicle can flip regardless of wheel count. With enough disregard for safety, you CAN flip almost anything! I was just pointing out the inherent instability of the trike design with a single front wheel - especially cornering at speed or in evasive maneuver situations, compared to the two-up-front design. The videos you presented are excellent! Thank you for the great commentary! Regardless of the mount, one must learn their limits - of themself and their vehicle. And training, practice, and experience are the best teachers. And I agree with your point on how a trike can be safer in most situations - gravel, raccoons, etc...Also, your point about visibility is spot on. One huge benefit of trikes is the added braking power. With three tire contact patches, I would imagine they stop harder, and more confidently, than their two-wheeled brethren. Thank you for the respectful and positive commentary. I've got nothing but love and respect for fellow riders - regardless of the design, make or model they prefer! Stay safe!
You are most welcome! I agree no matter what you ride or drive if you do not stay within your capabilities there will be bad outcomes. Thank you for commenting and ride safe! 👍 MB
Yeah, not going to have this issue with the 2018 and earlier models. Yes, it is part of the RDRS nanny program. The IMU senses lateral force and compensates...it just seems like it was compensating too much and surprising the rider. Here is a write up on the subject from Harley- A technical highlight of the system is its ability to measure lateral acceleration - the force the rider feels in turns - and adjust accordingly as that lateral force affects available traction. For example, the brake pressure required to limit wheel slip when cornering is typically lower than the pressure required under straight line operation, so when the system senses lateral acceleration that indicates the trike is cornering, the ABS response is adjusted accordingly. The action of Traction Control and linked braking also adjust based on lateral acceleration.
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. I would not be concerned with your 2021 regarding this issue. There have been No reports of this issue on the 2021. Sometime in 2020 HD got a handle on it...plus, the 2021 has a completely different ECM.
My 2020 was totalled due to an e-brake failure, so thankfully my bod was not at risk. I now have a 2021 Tri-glide ultra. Do you think this issue was straightened out in the 2021 model?
@@DKCustomProducts Thanks for the reply! I'll be looking at engine cooling stuff you have this summer, probably. I wish I could post a pic from this last glorious weekend.
I don't have a harley trike but have a Suzuki Burgman 650 with a Trinity Trike set and it did the same thing. Bad news did get it fixed and apparently it has happen to many Trinity trikes. They have been sold of course and no longer in the trike business. The new company makes reverse sets for trikes on Harleys
Also dealers are still waiting for the brake parts to correct this problem. The issue was my dealership the manager didn’t even know the part number and made me wait 6 months to fix it. Well they didn’t fix my bike I went to another dealer who had the parts. My regular dealer had the parts to fix the bike on the shelf but this part was never put into inventory!
Yeah, I think the brake light recall and hard parts fiasco is one thing. The HD Trike RDRS fix is totally a software patch. It does suck that there is a recall and no availability of parts for the recall. It is not just HD where this is happening. My wife's Ford Truck has two recalls on it. BOTH of them Safety recalls. The first one was over 16 months between the recall and when they had the parts to do the recall. The second one was 13 months between the recall and when they had the parts to do the recall. None of it is good, nor should it be acceptable.
Have a very serious question, I’m also going to ask the dealer this question first thing Monday morning. I’m talking of my 2021 free wheeler, I had an experience yesterday evening that scared the hell out of me and my wife. I had to break hard, hard enough that I felt the ABS kick in and my left rear tire for some reason, had more breaking power than the right and the front because it tried to shove me into oncoming traffic to my left. I thought it was going to flip us not to mention head on collision at 60 miles an hour. I know the earlier models had a major problem of the one wheel or the other would almost lock up, and would make the bike pull to one side or the other very abruptly, Harley had a big recall because of it but supposedly for the 21 models they had fix the problem. I’m thinking of deleting my ABS because I cannot have this thing yanking me to left if I have to break hard it never did it anymore. Just that one time I try to make it happen at a slower speed on my way home, but could not duplicate the problem. Has anybody else experienced this on the newer models? I can’t rely on warranty because my warranty is up
Mine has never done that at speed...but I can replicate it at will at slow speeds. Yes, it is supposed to have been addressed on the 2021 and later models, and for earlier models there is a software update. Perhaps your Trike would benefit from the software upgrade? I do not know what is involved in removing the ABS, but I think it is more a matter of the software working with the BCM (Body Control Module) in regards to the RDRS (Reflex Defensive Rider System) of which the ABS is just one part of. I believe the pulling is HD's attempt to keep the bike from swerving so much that it would flip over. It is part of the nanny controls that all vehicles have now days...trucks, cars, and more and more motorcycles. If the action experienced by the RDRS does not result in the bike trying to straighten it self out a bit, it is definitely now working as it should and should be taken to the dealership or someone knowledgeable in the Harley RDRS. "Cornering-Enhanced Electronic Linked Braking" is one of the features of the RDRS and should assist in safe cornering. Regarding warranty, you may find this video interesting/useful- th-cam.com/video/mktJOfGBYJE/w-d-xo.html
I've sent several emails and messages to other trike guys and nothing. So I'll ask you. In your opinion, how's the freewheeler handle in town and highways? I tried the Spyder and it was like being on rails, amazing. BUT I had a 16 Road King and was hit by a pickup truck, I'm more drawn to the freewheeler but want to make sure it's the bike for me.. thank you
Man, sorry to hear about the Road King and Pickup truck. Hope you are well. The Freewheeler can be a joy to ride. It can be a bit of a rough ride, but that can be fixed with some suspension upgrades. Or, you may not be bothered by the stock suspension. Regarding handling, when I first rode an HD Trike, the first thing that came to mind is this thing handles like a go cart...like you said, it is like being on rails. I was amazed, when I look at them they look so unwieldy, so it was all the more surprising how well they handle. I'll put links to a couple of videos below that we've made about the handling. One other thing that some folks have an issue with is slow speed steering. It can take some muscle to turn at slow speeds. This is overcome by good upper body strength, OR one can get wider handlebars that give more leverage, and one can get a Convertible Comfort Lift™ which will make steering easier. @@DKCustomProducts My plan if I like the Freewheeler is get a rekluse clutch and I've watched your other videos on suspension and the lift.. I'm not looking for speed, just a safe comfortable ride to get me back in the wind. I want to do a Stage 1 with TAB exhaust. That was my plan when I had my Road King but 2 weeks b4 my shop time I was hit and the bike was written off. I tried 2 wheels again but I didn't feel comfortable enough so I am looking at alternatives and that's the Freewheeler.. thanks for your reply and safe riding
I owned a 2020 Freewheeler... I had to learn how to ride it with the push and pull steering style. For me, the stock suspension was absolutely horrible. The worst riding bike I had ever owned. I got around it a little bit by running my rear tire psi at 20 and installing a Mustang seat. It made the ride more manageable. My engine sumped and destroyed itself. That was at 8500 miles after having HD replace the crappy lifters, which ate the cam. I decided to go back to 2 wheels. If I were to go the trike route again, the first thing I would change is the suspension. :-)
THe 21 models have an all new ECM/ BCM so the latests software has not reported any problems so far. I have not had any problems yet with my 21 FLRT even riding in the rain. I do like the ABS, it works as advertised
I have an older 2011 TriGlide without that computer braking crap and can’t understand the need for it at all. I have zero issues with braking or turning.
My 2020 Freewheeler had the recall... unfortunately, my engine sumped and destroyed itself before I could take it in. I never felt any of these symptoms after riding it 8500 miles. What concerns me is the crappy service we get from these dealerships. I have had more than one bad experience. It is shameful. It is clear that some of the service techs are under trained and wear clown shoes.
Man, sorry to hear of your 2020 sumping! Unfortunately the disappointing experience at HD Dealerships is also experienced at so many other Dealerships. We have 4 Ford Dealerships within 100 miles of us. 3 of them are staffed by folks that have been far more frustrating to work with than any HD Dealership.
@@DKCustomProducts I got to know my car dealership owner on a personal level... this has helped me immensely on more than one occasion. I have considered doing the same thing at my local HD dealership. however, I am sure any complaint I had would be dribbled down to the staff. I submitted a HD post service survey after experiencing poor service. I checked the box that said "DO NOT IDENTIFY WHO I AM TO THE DEALERSHIP." well, I received a phone call shortly after from the dealership asking me if my service went well or not. that was the first and last time I have ever received that type of phone call. the problem at the 3 different dealerships within 50 miles of my doorstep is the personnel. apparently, they are not paying nearly enough to obtain or maintain quality staff. many are dressed like thugs and not wearing HD uniforms of some type, poor attitudes, rude, etc... the dealership nearest to me has personnel that could fit right in with the Hells Angels. all they need is a gang vest. hard to avoid them because they are conveniently located. I have been trying to find a quality private certified maintenance/repair shop and have struck out. so, if HD screws up my bike during servicing, they will have to fix it. take care : -)
Hi I enjoyed watching your video My question is these issues with the Brake also apply to my 2011 triglide Or just 2019. I appreciate any comment Thank You
Yeah, the 2011's do not have the nanny computer doing things like the 19+ models. I believe somewhere in the 2020 model year they fixed it, so it only seems to be affecting 2019's and some 2020's. Not heard of any 2021's having the issue. Thanks for commenting! 😎 MB
This is what happens when you have your brake system operated by a computer instead of just being manual hydraulic operated which worked fine for decades
Thank for this very good video 👍. Is that possible to just make or modified it to be like the older style of brakes system on Harley with no computer? Like evo or shovel disc brake?
Do all Harley Trikes have this problem? I have a 2014 and have not had any problems with it, but now you are making me think. Is this only a problem with the trikes that have ABS or all of them? This is my first Harley ever so I don't know what to think.
Thanks for watching. As stated in the video it is only the 2019 and some of the 2020 Trikes that this applies to. Here is a copy and paste of the Pinned Comment in the video- **Please note, this only applies to 2019 and early 2020 Harley Trikes. Both the Tri Glide and the Freewheeler. It does NOT apply to 2021-2022 HD Trikes, or to 2018 and earlier HD Trikes** Enjoy your 2014, no issues with this problem on that year. Wishing you Many Miles of Smiles riding it. These trikes are very capable, different than a 2 wheeler, but extremely stable. I had the Service Bulletin done on my 2020 trike it's M1506 I got a copy of it from my local dealership. So far since the recall I have ridden about 5k and so far haven't had a problem. Question does it on when you brake hard with the back brake or is it with the combine front and back braking hard? My trike has 13k.
With mine it is only the rear brake. I tried repeatedly to get it to do it with just the front brake and with the front brake and the rear brake. I talk about what I did and experienced here- th-cam.com/video/TL9Xi8rTJ70/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it. 👍 Yeah, it's a struggle. As a rule I do not like any nanny options on a motorcycle. I do like the ABS, in an emergency braking situation, it is near impossible for a human to modulate the braking as well as the ABS. That said- I've never had a problems modulating the braking manually to get near all the stopping power needed, without locking up the brakes. A few things I do NOT like one bit...linked brakes and traction control.
I'm looking into getting a trike, and am thinking I should get a trike that does not have the RDRS system. What year did they start using that on the Tri Glides?
You can call HD Corporate and give them your VIN. They will let you know if there is an outstanding recall/flash needed for your TG. What kind of rear brake problems do you have?
I have a 2022 tri glide and when you put the rear brake pedal on a lot of times you can’t pull the front brake leaver and it don’t happen all the time .The other day I rode the smoky mountain memorial ride in the rain coming home on the interstate I had to hit the brakes and the trike would not slow down I had to down shift to get it slowed down and it pulled to the right.
If it is pulling to either side when you brake, I would address that issue immediately. Regarding the front brake lever, the brakes are linked, so if you put on the rear brakes hard, before the front brake lever, the front brake lever starts engaging earlier than normal, because the rear brakes are already partially actuating the front brakes. HOWEVER, you should be able to squeeze that front brake lever harder than normal and get more front braking power. Most of the time, I put the front brakes on first and then help the braking process with the rear brakes.
My opinion on the accident situation is harley should be held responsible for the repairs and the guys hospital stay. There defects is what caused the accident.
I boughta2020 tri glide ,and was going on a left hand turn about 45 mpr. There was one of those small dips in the middle of the turn then it started,it started turning right so I hit the brakes then next thing you know by the time it was turning even harder to the right aiming for an 8 foot drop in to a creek. I couldn't stop the right hand turn and by the time I has headed in the ditch it went straight in you could see the track of the wheels going in the ditch like you drove straight off it that way .we both got hurt in the wreck (me and my wife), I was told my recall was done,if it was then there is still more to do I don't want this to let me hold me back from riding. What to do next ,insurance might total it out,any help?
Man, I am sorry to hear of this accident. I hope you both heal up well. What I would do is test your new Trike at slow speeds to make sure the brakes work correctly, not pulling you the opposite direction you are trying to turn.
I have a 2016 Ultra Tri-Glide with 4,200 miles. This exact problem has happened to us twice! The first time, it pulled us so hard to the right, it took us from the left lane through the right lane and into a parking lot. We came within 2 feet of being T-boned by oncoming traffic in the right lane. Have you heard of any 2016 ultra trikes with the 103cc engine being affected exactly in the same way as your 2019? My wife and I are 67 years old, and I have been riding since I was 11 years old. If you have any contact information for H-D, please pass it along to me. Thank you! John - Albany, NY
The problem outlined in this video, and in the video I made about my own ride, is specifically about some 2019 and 2020 models, and it is in regards to the programming of the RDRS system on these Trikes. 2016 does not have this computer controlled RDRS, so that means that what you describe experiencing sound like a mechanical issue (vs a computer programming issue). I would have the entire brake system gone over, because it certainly sounds like one of the rear brakes is braking more than the other side.
I have a 2009 tryke / HD and the rear brakes stick !Had a local bike shop put new pads, caliber on rear but the rear brakes drag.Get on the brakes and you can't feel the rear brakes doing anything ! Help !
Whoever did your calipers and pads did not do it right. You should be able to lock up the rear tires with enough pressure on the pedal. I would either have them fix it, assuming you paid them, they should do what they were paid to do, Or have a different shop fix the work that the first shop did not do right.
I would not be concerned with your 2009 as I have not heard of any issues like this with the earlier models! The issue started in 2019 and was remedied sometime in 2020! Thanks for watching!
The dealer asked me if I would want RDRS on my bike, (and knowing harley, and how it can take years for them to fix minor and Major bugs of system design), I said absolutely not.. and they wanted 1k for this feature.. and they been doing the Harley Denial Shuffle with the incredible safety problems ever since.. oh boy, do they know how to damage their reputation and make it easy for company loyalists to find the exit doors.
I also had a 2009 Tri Glide. It was a great ride! Went all the way to the arctic circle and back on it, you can see ride report on that at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/acl/kevin-mary-s-ride-to-alaska-arctic-circle-and-back-2013.htm The issue in this video does Not apply to the 09's. The 09's do have the weakness outlined in the following video...as do all HD Trike Models. th-cam.com/video/eTF6Uqm2KZU/w-d-xo.html
Any suggestions on why my 2018 ultra limited is running rich. I checked the plugs and yes they where dark so I replaced and still problem is there. Could it be engine temp sensor or speedo sensor wondering if you could help.
Would be glad to try. If you email or call with details on your bike...is it stock? Air Cleaner? Exhaust? Tuner? Different Cam? You can put it here, just might be easier/not as likely to get overlooked, in an email or a call than in youtube comments.
@@mrbigt2307 If it is running too rich (very difficult to tell from plugs on an EFI bike), it could be a variety of things, as you mentioned the temp sensor, or another thing it could be is that the o2 sensors are not reading right. If it is running like it is too rich, blubbery and doggy and maybe some farting thru the throttle body, then it is time to start the process of elimination, or get it on a dyno with a sniffer to see where it is rich. If it is running well, the plugs may just be dirty/dark from the hot, oily, oxygen depleted crankcase air being fed into the combustion chambers. I just talked to my dealer today, 11.3.2022. He told me my 2021 trike is in for recall as soon as HD sends the parts. Some vehicles will get a computer upgrade and some as mine sill get a new black switch. He told me HD pays 2 hours for the repair. Some of the wrecks you are talking about I think is BS. I am sure some are real.
Yeah, just shy off 200,000 bikes and trikes have a recall for a defective brake light switch. This is NOT related to the recall talked about in this video. Here's an article on it- www.consumeraffairs.com/recalls/harley-davidson-recalls-200000-trikes-and-touring-motorcycles-102622.html
What is outlined in this video is a software upgrade, and it is only for Trikes that have RDRS, I do not believe your 2017 has RDRS, so whatever issues you are having, it is not what is addressed in this video.
As an old rider all this technology is very discouraging. The newer bikes need special tools and a new education to work on them. It appears that the owner is being discouraged from doing even the simplest maintenance.
I hear ya. It is insane how much wiring and electronics are on the new bikes. Take a look, starting at the 4:10 mark, in the following video link- th-cam.com/video/Hz7UgPMXO48/w-d-xo.html It is just incredible!
I have a 2017 Tri Glide and I haven't had this happen yet, it sounds like it's the 2019 and up Trikes, I'll be pulling a motorcycle travel trailer starting in the spring, hopefully we won't have any problems lol, I seen someone post this on Facebook to, kinda scary shit when ya think about it💯👊🏽😎
Yeah, the 2017's do not have the nanny computer doing things like the 19+ models. I believe somewhere in the 2020 model year they fixed it, so it only seems to be affecting 2019's and some 2020's. Not heard of any 2021's having the issue.
@@DKCustomProducts thanks guys, I'm sure I'll keep the one that I have, I've got a lot put into it, and I'm definitely not about loosing anymore money lol, thanks again💯
@@OZARKSHDRIDERS I hear you! I've liked all my Tri Glides. If I did not have to get new models for product development I would probably still have my 2011. 👍
The Harley-Davidson Tri-Glide Trikes affected are: 2019-2020 Tri-Glide Ultra (FLHTCUTG) 2019-2020 Freewheeler (FLRT) 2020 CVO Tri-Glide (FLHTCUTGSE) The recall began on Dec. 2, 2019. I would like to ask you guys a question I’ve got a new 22 model ordered be here late October have they got these issues fixed cause if I scare my wife she will never ride with me again I’ve always wanted to go wing but I ordered a brand new Harley because of my son rides a Harley
Yes, as noted in the video, the software change to the RDRS that fixed this issue has been standard on all Trikes since mid 2020. I have recently noted that Harley Trike wheels are discoloring and are peeling. I have noticed this on 2018-2021 and it appears that dealers are not making any attempted to rectify this problem. Is Harley having issues with these wheels Is any one aware of this issue
HD Trike wheels have been discoloring since they were introduced in 2009. The aluminum is porous and the brake dust and road grime tends to stain them. Lot's of folks have tried different coatings...ceramic, clear-coat, powder coat, and even chroming them to deal with it...most just spend some serious time polishing them periodically. I personally have tried clear coat and ceramic. Not 100% happy with either, but definitely an improvement over stock. Here is a video you may find interesting- th-cam.com/video/oPE3HHnxskY/w-d-xo.html Yes, HD is aware and so is almost every HD owner. Just the nature of the wheels.
Yes, it affects the 2019 Freewheeler. Calling a Dealership with your VIN and asking them if there are any open recalls on your Trike will let you know.
There is no 2002 Freewheeler. Maybe you meant 2022? In any case, the parking brake is cable operated and has an adjustment that should periodically be made to it. Procedure is outlined in your manual. Parking brake has nothing to do with RDRS. KP

@@DKCustomProducts It's insane. Fuel injection was as far as they should have ever gone with motorcycle technology. If you think about it, an ABS failure on a car is no biggie. On 2 (or 3) wheels, it's deadly. I have a Road Glide with RDRS and it's always in the back of my mind. What they don't understand with vehicle technology is that it's not a computer in a sterile interior room. This has been going on since 09 they wanted to charge me 1200.00to replace my abs module and program it on a09 ultra classic I did it myself cost of parts 3oo.00
I bought my 2018 Tri Glide Harley 6 months ago and I love it it's the people that has been used to a two wheeler they have no experience how to ride a triglide and I have owned two wheeler since way back in late 70s early 80s I do not go into curbs 60 70 miles an hour you cannot ride on them like you can on a two-wheeler I'm just saying
we have had a 2022 triglide for a month now. 2 times now while riding the abs and trac control lights have came on. today our break lights started flickering randomly while going down the Interstate. can this be part of that recall they thought was fixed on the previous years trikes?
This is mostly true. In the parts that we make, our goal is to overengineer them so that they will outlast the motorcycle. Thus the Lifetime Warranty on the parts we make. The problem in the video is really not a matter of something malfunctioning, it is more a matter of something designed wrong that in certain circumstances will surprise the rider.
It would be hard for you to tell just watching a video if it was doing it or not. That is why we made this video talking about it. Thanks for commenting! MB
I have. A 2019 freewheeler back breaks are very weak. Don't have 5000 miles on a year go ahead. Rick one Rico they tried to charge me for I'm not sure I won't bring it in for the rear brakes but I probably need you and yes you get to back breaks hard it does pull. The opposite way. If you're not a regular rider you would know what to do bird dangerous.
Yes, if your brakes are pulling to one side on your 2019, you probably need the software update. Regarding them being weak...we are going to be testing some alternative rear brake pads to see if they provide any better braking and feedback. Will be in the next two month that we do those tests.
Yes, there is much different about the HD Trikes from HD 2 wheelers. They are pretty stable though. Check out this video of a Tri Glide tearing up the Dragon. Most, if not all, Stock HD 2 wheelers cannot keep up. th-cam.com/video/3UAMKIj97G0/w-d-xo.html
That’s a serious situation, and it highlights the importance of safety in motorcycles. Recalls can be concerning, especially when they involve such critical components. It’s crucial for manufacturers to prioritize the safety of their riders. Thanks for sharing that information and for commenting! 😎 MB
Something really stinks about this so called problem. Even if one wheel does lock up, the bike will not cause this problem. I think these problems are the operators fault and and not the motorcycles.
Wait a second! The guy making the video above knows there is a problem with his bike, but HAS NOT taken it to the dealer? That’s just stupid. Also during the video, he says “braking” while swerving the problem happens. You’re not supposed to brake during a swerve……EVER!!! I can’t subscribe to this channel.
Yeah, and you're not supposed to pull wheelies, or drift, do burn-outs, purpose lift one of the rear tires off the ground, or ride in the snow either. In fact, Millions of folks will tell you that is is just stupid to ride a 2 wheel or 3 wheel motorcycle. But I do all of the above. As a rule I do not brake and swerve at the same time...but, I did decide to do that when I wanted to get into that driveway. I did it carefully, knowing the limits of traction, balance, etc. That is when I discovered the flaw in the software programming. All subsequent brake/swerve combos were testing to decipher what was going on.
Knowing there is an actual problem and you decide not to do take it in for the recall-and saying so-makes me not interested in your channel. You are stating to those watching your video that safety is not important.
THANKYOU for the attention to this issue... Especially to the life lost, RIP😭
💪🇦🇺💪
Yes, sad deal for sure.
Kevin, man you know your Bike! Glad you were ahead of this problem.
Yeah, could have been a whole lot different if I had jerked the handlebars back the first time.
You should pin this
This isn't on a trike but on an older softtail model.
On the year and a half that the trikes had problems, it was a software issue that was surprising the riders and resulting in a dangerous reaction.
Yes, if you like to drift, the Trikes can do it very nicely on a wet surface or on a non-asphalt/concrete road.

The insurance companies should be having Harley in court for big enough lawsuits they will never ignore this kind of problems again.
(memories of doing that with your M8 years ago)
Quite possibly the older computers had trouble handling all the new Nanny systems. But it does seem like they have it handled now.
Like @Todd Gittins said, Old School Rules. These new systems are doing things that we cannot adjust and control like a carb, or even the EFI with the PV.
@@DKCustomProducts Should be interesting to see the results, this is how we learn
( before I was aware of the traction control issue.)
The Harley dealer said they bought it from an Indian dealer in Charlotte,NC.

2021's were not affected by this.
👍
- th-cam.com/video/S91qYTjW_Xg/w-d-xo.html

@@DKCustomProducts Thank you for the detailed response!
I absolutely agree!! Different strokes for different folks! 100%
Almost any vehicle can flip regardless of wheel count.

You are most welcome! I agree no matter what you ride or drive if you do not stay within your capabilities there will be bad outcomes.

I sure am glad we bought a 2017 Tri Glide , could this be a traction control issue with the newer models
Yeah, not going to have this issue with the 2018 and earlier models.
Yes, it is part of the RDRS nanny program. The IMU senses lateral force and compensates...it just seems like it was compensating too much and surprising the rider. Here is a write up on the subject from Harley-
A technical highlight of the system is its ability to measure lateral acceleration - the force the rider feels in turns - and adjust accordingly as that lateral force affects available traction.
Thanks Kevin and Dwayne great video. I have a 21 TGU so far no problems. However I'm a bit concerned about this problem now that I'm aware of it.
We have not heard any reports otherwise.

@@tri-glideron9862 Have a great rest of the weekend!

So I guess I can assume the problem was fixed before any 21 models got released.
THe 21 models have an all new ECM/ BCM so the latests software has not reported any problems so far. I have not had any problems yet with my 21 FLRT even riding in the rain. I do like the ABS, it works as advertised
What Jack said.
I have an older 2011 TriGlide without that computer braking crap and can’t understand the need for it at all. I have zero issues with braking or turning.
Understood. With the computer assisted riding Harley is trying to make it easier for less experienced folks to ride safely.
@@RedTickJJ Glad you liked the video. Thank you for the comment.
Yep. The pool of quality folks is shrinking...that is for sure. Sad state of affairs.
Hi I enjoyed watching your video
My question is these issues with the Brake also apply to my 2011 triglide
Or just 2019.
I appreciate any comment
Thank You
Yeah, the 2011's do not have the nanny computer doing things like the 19+ models.
Agree that this is what can happen.
@@DKCustomProducts A very balanced and sensible comment, thank you.
Here is a copy and paste of the Pinned Comment in the video-
**Please note, this only applies to 2019 and early 2020 Harley Trikes. Both the Tri Glide and the Freewheeler. It does NOT apply to 2021-2022 HD Trikes, or to 2018 and earlier HD Trikes**
Enjoy your 2014, no issues with this problem on that year.
Wishing you Many Miles of Smiles riding it.
These trikes are very capable, different than a 2 wheeler, but extremely stable. Here is a video on a little bit on the differences between a 2 wheeler and a Trike- th-cam.com/video/kymJu_0gaoU/w-d-xo.html
Public safety ! Dam! Recall - thanks Bro,s!
👍😎👍
I had the Service Bulletin done on my 2020 trike it's M1506 I got a copy of it from my local dealership. So far since the recall I have ridden about 5k and so far haven't had a problem. Question does it on when you brake hard with the back brake or is it with the combine front and back braking hard? My trike has 13k.
With mine it is only the rear brake. I tried repeatedly to get it to do it with just the front brake and with the front brake and the rear brake.
I talk about what I did and experienced here- th-cam.com/video/TL9Xi8rTJ70/w-d-xo.html
I have a custom-built FLSS trike. The first thing I did was diconect the abs!
I wish I hadn't gotten the ABS option, on my 2018 Road King. Old School rules. Good video!
Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it. 👍
Yeah, it's a struggle.
A few things I do NOT like one bit...linked brakes and traction control.
abs saved us..2010 ultra ..i didn't want abs but it was the only bike I could get..i may not be here without it
I'm looking into getting a trike, and am thinking I should get a trike that does not have the RDRS system. What year did they start using that on the Tri Glides?
2019 was the first year.
I have a 2019triglide with rear brakes problems, never received a recall notice, I will blame the dealership but I don't think they will help me
You can call HD Corporate and give them your VIN. They will let you know if there is an outstanding recall/flash needed for your TG.
What kind of rear brake problems do you have?
I have a 2018. It appears the problem noted is only for trikes with ABS. Is this correct?
2019 and some 2020 are possibly affected. No RDRS on the 2018, so no worries on this issue for your ride! 😎👍
Everything i heard is for the tri glide not the freewheeler, I have a freewheeler 2021 and have never had the issue
It does apply to Freewheelers also, BUT, ONLY to 2019 and early 2020 Model years.
@@DKCustomProducts the dealership reflashed the ABS and it worked great on the way home only 50 miles
Good deal!
My opinion on the accident situation is harley should be held responsible for the repairs and the guys hospital stay. There defects is what caused the accident.

Only trikes have this problems?
The first time, it pulled us so hard to the right,
it took us from the left lane through the right lane and into a parking lot.
Thanks for replying so quickly.

I have a 2009 Tri Glide Ultra Classic is the brakes on these good to go? Or could it have this problem?
Yes, it's unfortunate that new features are rolled out with seemingly not enough testing. 🙁
I own a 2009 trike. Are you aware of any recalls or undiagnosed (by Harley) problems. I’ve only got 19k miles rung up on it.

It's a stock 2018 ultra limited 107 with cobra slip on exhaust no tune
Check out this video- th-cam.com/video/EfDeFZblMck/w-d-xo.html

Parts do I need to fix this?
What is outlined in this video is a software upgrade, and it is only for Trikes that have RDRS, I do not believe your 2017 has RDRS, so whatever issues you are having, it is not what is addressed in this video.
As an old rider all this technology is very discouraging. The newer bikes need special tools and a new education to work on them. It appears that the owner is being discouraged from doing even the simplest maintenance.

Here is a video you may find interesting- th-cam.com/video/oPE3HHnxskY/w-d-xo.html
Yes, HD is aware and so is almost every HD owner. Just the nature of the wheels.

Yes, it affects the 2019 Freewheeler. Calling a Dealership with your VIN and asking them if there are any open recalls on your Trike will let you know.
My 2002 freewheeler parking brake isn't working pads are good
There is no 2002 Freewheeler. Maybe you meant 2022?
In any case, the parking brake is cable operated and has an adjustment that should periodically be made to it. Procedure is outlined in your manual.

What they don't understand with vehicle technology is that it's not a computer in a sterile interior room. we have had a 2022 triglide for a month now. 2 times now while riding the abs and trac control lights have came on. today our break lights started flickering randomly while going down the Interstate. can this be part of that recall they thought was fixed on the previous years trikes?
The 737Max of motorcycles.
EEEK, don't think it is that bad.😬
We need more electronics.
Careful! 😎👍
If and when it is made by a human, there's ganna be a malfunction sooner or Later! 😳😟
Why didn't you take the bike out and try it and show us

Yes, if your brakes are pulling to one side on your 2019, you probably need the software update.
Regarding them being weak...we are going to be testing some alternative rear brake pads to see if they provide any better braking and feedback. Will be in the next two month that we do those tests.

Sue Harley Davidson for millions...💲.this unexcetable ⚰️🏍💩💩💩💩
Wow.
Harley should pay for his damage and hospital bills.
It appears the Dealership is the one that messed up by not doing a proper software upgrade. But, I hear ya.
