You are right ma’am. This interview is amazing to me because it shows the tremendous value in Ali for interviews. He looks so tired at the beginning and doesn’t really want to talk, but still finds the energy from somewhere to give a great performance and do his Ali magic even for little old Australia. He’s also one of the few celebrities who was sharp enough to pick up that Norman Gunston was a piss take. Muhammad Ali was witty genius
I do recall at one point when Angelo Dundee was interviewed he said that Ali was a lot of fun to be around. But business of course in the ring, and otherwise all about selling the fights.
No really. He cheated on his wife 1000 times, had kids he didn’t know, beat people for a living. I will say he was smart not wanting to get involved in Vietnam
Mohamed Ali, Cassius Clay, whatever you call him, he was one of the greatest marketing geniuses ever. He was the first great Mike artists and the rock is a pale pretender on the mic compared to the real great one. Don't tell Tyson. He's my second favourite.
I'm on a Norman Guston binge and holy freaking crap I forgot how much of a legend Ali was hahahhaa _"You don't have no money so I wrote you a poem!"_ He is one of the few people who fully played in with the show. Edit: Although I must give credit to Karen Black because she was absolutely excellent! hahahaha
Thanks for uploading this Australian Broadcasting Corp video, it's now more accessible. Ali responded brilliantly to the very unusual Norman. Amazing exchange shows the quality of his mind! Rest in peace bro, you is great.
the funny thing about the greatest is that back then, lots of people took him seriously, from the very beginning from his amateur days in Louisville Kentucky he was the greatest prankster there was, always a big kid at heart, one of the nicest & kindest men that ever lived, he totally inspired me then, and I'm inspired now.
Watched an extensive documentary (5-6 hours) on him recently and couldn't help but think why didn't he forget about those last six or seven fights and go into movies or TV instead, the Muppets maybe?, he was a natural comic and taking the option of fighting on definitely shortened his life. As a high school student he used to wear lipstick to classes, very funny man and the world is poorer for not having him here.
When interviewed by the inimitable David Frost, Muhammad said that when he was young he loved watching the wrestling on TV. There was one particular wrestler he loved and that was the perpetual villain, Gorgeous George of the "Please not the face" fame. What young Cassius noticed was that, as hated as George was, he always wrestled in front of packed house and they all wanted George to lose. The young Cassius decided to model his professional persona on the wrestler. He also added that that he had to make sure he could back up his prefight words in the ring.
@@kenchristie9214 Aww, the amazing coincidence! I remember watching that interview when it first aired (yes I’m that old) Gorgeous George was indeed his inspiration, they Booo-Booo him but they paid money to see him and to see him get a whooping. Ah, that Muhammad was special, in many ways very special kind fellow.
Still brings a laugh. A true Australian classic, is Norman Gunston. Full credit to Mohammed Ali too, he was great. Notice the young(ish) Don King next to Ali near the end?
Aww, he didn't get his signature. I have just watched ten other interviews where he gets their signature at the end every time. He must have been too awestruck. Great to watch though.
Ali loved to get into his opponent’s head before a fight, I remember him having that toy gorilla & punching it saying that’s what he would do to Frazier, by fight time Frazier was furious, Ali got what he wanted.

That was what was fun about Ali he had that borderline smirk on his face the whole time during this

I miss Norman Gunston
👋😂☘️🇵🇭
Of all Norman's interviews, I reckon Mohammed Ali stepped into the comedy role quicker than anyone, what a true legend.
Agreed! Ali got the joke way before anyone else did 😂😂😂
Ali was an idiot a racist and anti white and took too many punches to the head even than
Segregation
@@namisill850 Ali is known worldwide and will be for hundreds of years from now and you have to it with this small comment on youtube

There is no one in the world similar to Gunston. 30 years on till this day his a legend and always will…. Thank you Gary McDonald’
Muhammad Ali is so gracious and went along with Norman Gunston.
That's interesting, you could also interpret it as the other way round.
they are really just two big hams......fun

Pure genius. The comedy act went back and forth beautifully.
A brilliant interview. Norman Gunstan met his match.

Muhammad Ali and Norman Gunston.

Ali and Gunston, two of my heroes. Love from New Zealand.
Ali ... a true legend ... and one of the greatest sportsman there ever lived ... quickly got in on the joke with Norman ... priceless ...
Not one of the greatest - The Greatest.
@not today Nope. Tyson himself has said this on many occasions.
That was brilliant, no-one overshadows the Great Muhammad Ali.
nobody could match Muhammad inside or outside of the ring, how quickly he flipped that interview and took over.
This is great, thanks for uploading! The comb-over and shaving cuts made me lol.
Muhammad Ali played a good straight man to Norman Gunston comedic act.
Miss you, Norman..part of my Aussie heritage..
Same that guy was the greatest !
Ali would of been the US president..if could of dragged himself down to that level....loved him all my life...
Mohammed Ali looked sensational, at his prime, great interview Norman
One of the greatest interviews 😂
What a interview. Simply Brilliant.
Ali can mix it with the best of them inside the ring and outside.
Ali was as much a comedian himself as a boxer, he twigged about Gary quick and played along beautifully.
Two geniuses.
Geez Norman had some go in him. The little Aussie bleeder.
I haven't seen the little Aussie Bleeder since I was a kid! My favorite Wollongong sea scout
Norman Gunston is thr BEST interviewer the world has ever seen. Absolute Genius !! Love ya Gary Macdonald ❤❤
That was gold! First time I've ever seen it. They made a good fit!
This is just great! This Gunston guy was hilarious in the '70s. It didn't take much effort from him to get MA's act going he he.
Norman met his match but was quick to realise to let the greatest talk without interrupting.
Ali was quick-witted. What a champ.
Norman you're a champion.
HILARIOUS!!! Thanks. 👌😂👏👏🌻
Crack up the look on Norms face when Ali grabbed him priceless.
Oh how I loved Muhammad! First saw him fight against Liston when I was 7 and fell in love with boxing & Mohammad! Amazing man indeed 💖💖💖
What a,man he was the greatest, the funniest and a gracious man
As aliekum salaam
I love ❤️ u Muhammad Ali dearly May Allah give him a beautiful mention in heaven 💐💐💐
It goes without saying, there is only one Norman.
They would make a Great double act,Ali is not only funny he's also a good actor!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ali almost broke into a laugh a couple of times but managed to hold the line - this was a classic.
My favourite Gunston interview is with Frank Zappa. The harmonica and ABC music is comedy genius.
Norman Gunston. The greatest!
total Showmanship and Comedy. incredible media savvy
Two Champions.
Oh the Good old days !
Mohammed Ali such a huge personality a household name across the world The Man
That's not a comb over......that's a "Scalp over" LOL
Norman Gunston. Too good
Mohammed Ali, what a legend. I like how he kind of got in on the act and ran with it, which Norman in turn played off to effect!
Ali handled this much better that Warren Beatty.
Warren Beatty - PHTT
Beatty was quite obviously worded up. You know how they're actors and shit? Comes in handy sometimes.
Ali was hilarious!Amazing talent!
As we say in London, that's class!
Punctuality is the soul of courtesy. I'm punchy. That's my excuse. What's your excuse?

Thus guy was one of the first parody, alter-ego interviewers. Like Borat three decades later.
This is the funniest Gunston interview I’ve seen. Ali got him instantly.
You don't get better humor than pre-woke comedy.
Norman Gunston, the best interviewer to ever come out of Australia
So good. RIP Ali
There was an appreciation there for sure.
So classic but my favourite is still Norman and Zappa such a quick wit both of them tho

Love Ali...
Ali at his prime. Would talk trash n back it up with action.R.I.p
He should have interviewed Don King (Sat next to Ali) What a meeting of minds that would have been...
His fist came right across that table. Yikes!
I thought the same, good extension, that reach.
I met Gary McDonald after a Norman Gunston show at Tallebudgera Creek Hotel, Gold Coast
He said 'Isn't television marvellous'
I LOVE YOU GARY MCDONALD

Did Don King take all of Ali’s money too?
Shit yeah, he would have stripped him of everything. Don King is pure evil.
I’m punchy .. whats your excuse. 😂🤣
What a gorgeous person Ali was.
Wow.
TOP!!

,,,,, today on TV is shit ,,,,,, those days were great !
Ali was a champ, but also very personally abusive of Joe Frazier, constantly deriding the man for having heavier African features than himself.
