Here are my 10 most depressing metal albums. I haven’t listened to Trees of Eternity, but knowing that their singer passed away shortly after that album makes it depressing for sure. 1. Woods of Ypres - Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light 2. Type O Negative - World Coming Down 3. My Dying Bride - Feel the Misery 4. Swallow the Sun - Emerald Forest and the Blackbird 5. Katatonia - Viva Emptiness 6. Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain 7. Anathema - Judgement 8. Paradise Lost - Draconian Times 9. Pallbearer - Foundations of Burden 10. Alcest - Kodama
For me: 1. MDB - Turn Loose the Swans 2. MDB - The Light at the End of the World 3. Dolorian - When All the Laughter has Gone 4. Morgion - Solinari 5. Katatonia - The Fall of Hearts
I find metal in all forms to be uplifting and soul nourishing. Agalloch is about the only band I can think of that triggers sadness... maybe Woods of Ypres?
I gotta say Marrow of the Spirit - Agalloch. From the instrumental opening to that apocalyptic riff in To Drown, it not only makes me depressed but also makes me feel small
My Dying Bride- Feel the Misery. It goes beyond sadness into just being harrowing. Draconian- Arcane Rain Fell . Not sure if it's the saddest album because I havent listened to the discography in years...but that one comes to mind first. Opeth- Damnation .I've always thought of it as just quietly melancholic, but now it's so nostalgic to me that the further in time I get from it, the sadder it becomes Woods of Ypres - Grey Skies and Electric Lights. It's the lyrical mix of mortality and existence that really hit home. Could never get into Anathema, but love Antimatter (their rock side project?)-- so if you want an EVEN SADDER acoustic version of their songs give them a listen. Planetary confinement and Leaving Eden are top tier.
Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress Mournful Congregation - The Monad of Creation Swallow the Sun - Ghosts of Loss Ahab - The Giant Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit Warning - Watching from a distance Esoteric - Paragon of Dissonance Neurosis - The Eye of Every Storm Austere - To Lay Like Old Ashes Forgotten Tomb - Songs To Leave Thy Light - Suici.De.pression Lustre - Glimpse of Glory Hallatar - No Stars Upon The Bridge Midnight Odyssey - Funerals from the Astral Sphere
Those albums don't make me sad but more deep thinking and staring in the Void through the window or a the ceiling : - Swallow the Sun - When A shadow is forced Into the Light - Swallow - Moonflowers - Draconian - Under a Godless veil - My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire - My Dying Bride - A Map of All Our Failures - Nyktalgia - Nyktalgia - Silencer - Death Pierce Me - Envy - Insomniac Dosze - Insomnium - Any
Anathema with pretty much anything but especially the We're Here because We're Here and Weather Systems albums. But theres one song on Distant Satellites that make me cry every time i here it. That song is Take Shelter. The live album A Sort of Homecoming especially because i recorded a video of me holding my 19 year old cat while watching a video of Anathema live playing Take Shelter. My cat Mandi was very sick and past away the next day. So that song will always remind me of her. Sentenced - The Cold White Light (Sentenced mean alot to me. I named my cat Miika after guitarist Miika Tenkula) Zakk Wylde - Book of Shadows II Draconian - Sovran My Dying Bride - The dreadful Hours Novembers Doom - The Novella Reservoir Type O Negative - World Coming Down Theatre of Tragedy - Aegis Godgory - Way Beyond (a few songs have moody elements so i'll put it here) Lacrimas Profundere - Antiadore (RIP PS3 Hitman Absolution servers. All my World record scores from 2013-2018 gone) Lost - Tragedy of Love (little bit of HIM worship and i don't really get into HIM but this is catchy. Singer went to Lacrimas Profundere for awhile) We are the Fallen - Tear the World Down Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down Its kinda hard to pick albums. Songs would be easier for me but thats a few from me.
Although not entire albums that are depressing, but there are some songs by Panopticon that sink my soul, like Patient, Dead Loons, Winter's Ghost, absolutely heartbreaking.
Some sad albums for me from start to finish: Trees of Eternity - Hour of the Nightingale Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell Draconian - Under A Godless Veil Draconian - Sovran Mournful Congregation - The Monad of Creation My Dying Bride - A Map Of All Our Failures Shining - Angst Mgla - Exercises In Futility Lord of Shadows - Echoes of Yore Zuriaake - Gu Yan
I used to listen to a lot of My Dying Bride and Type O Negative, which were the most depressing ones I was able to stand (and still enjoy!). Currently I'm mostly listening to music at work, and such downers wouldn't help, so I avoid them.
Idk why but Exercises in Futility by Mgla always makes me go in a deep, melancholic, dark mood. It’s one of the saddest albums I’ve heard in Metal. I know nihilism and sadness are not the same but the giving up feeling of the album is very sad IMO
My favorite depressing album is Futile from the Finnish melodic death/doom band Rapture. The song "Someone I (Don't) Know" is one of my all time favorite songs.
For me, Anathema-A Natural Disaster Woods of Ypres-Woods V Grey Skies and Electric Light Katatonia-The Great Cold Distance The National-Sleep Well Beast Agent Fresco-Destrier Ryan Adams-Ryan Adams Ours-Ballet the Boxer Eels-Electro Shock Blues Green Carnation-Acoustic Verses Adrianne Lenker-Songs Pain of Salvation-Remedy Lane The Blue Nile-Hats Great list of albums there. I feel like you can put nearly any Anathema, Katatonia or Swallow the Sun record because they really have that tone and those types of lyrics that bring some of those thoughts and feelings. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Woods V: Grey Skies and Electric Light. Enough said. This album is a journey. A sad broken melancholic journey told (as I interpret it) through the eyes of the singer David Gold accepting his break up and that life will never be the same. It helped me through the worst time of my life and I love it so much. Please listen to it!!
Not so many albums in metal makes me feel sad, but here's a few: Katatonia - Discouraged Ones and Last Fair Deal Gone Down Celtic Frost - Monotheist Lifelover - Konkurs
Warning - Watching From A Distance. Very sad album that's trad doom, but honestly almost has an indie/slowcore feel. love Katatonia, along similar lines I like My Dying Bride and Tiamat a lot. Tom G. Warrior's Triptykon is dark and a bit depressive. There's some great DSBM like Forgotten Tomb and Psychonaut 4. I love black-doom like Mizmor, Mourning Dawn, and Deinonychus.
Great list. I have to agree for me probably I have the same list. Joy Division ‘s closer has to be on it also. As 4 Anathema: Judgement is my favorite and indeed it’s the most depressive. Their album Last Day to Exist is also very very depressive especially the suicidal themes. O yeah: Frozen by Sentenced. Pfff the song ‘the suicider’ is haunting.
Anathema is my favorite go to sad band. As for my album pick I'm going with Distant Satellites. I feel like songs like Dusk, Ariel, Lost Song pt 1 and 2 really tear my heart
Hands Down - Trees of Eternity "Hour of the Nightingale" would sink any soul... Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress crushes. Clouds- Destin album especially the song "The wind carried your soul"... And in time Draconian Under A Godless Veil will weigh me down. Oddly The London cast of Les Miserabe always makes me sad,,,weird. Thank you for bringing forth this topic , its always good to let out the feels. I almost forgot Lord of Shadows- Echoes of Yore LP. Aaron Stanthorpe and Heike Langhans complement each other well on the album..
A Map Of All Our Failures - My Dying Bride Rainbow - Rising (Because i think of how amazing Dio is and then i remember that he is no longer with us :( cant think of anymore because i usually dont listen to super depressing stuff, but cool to listen to you talk about it! anything from bell witch especially four phantoms makes my moon 10X worse i live and breathe sad music (hence the agalloch pfp at the time of writing this) so yea a lot of sad albums are also in my favorite albums of all time list too (brave murder day being #1)
