Hi! So glad I found this video! I have a question. We have a fireplace but we don’t have any type of access door to the chimney for the ash pit. Our home is on a slab foundation and when I look down into the ash pit, it seems to go deep into the ground. Is there something I should be looking for as far as a door or some type of entryway in order to clean out the ash pit? Or will my ash pit have to be clean a different way since we have a slab foundation?
They should not have installed a ash pit door on a slab foundation and you should fill the hole with sand to about 8 inches before slab. Try to compact it and then pour concrete in the hole to make it smooth with the firebox floor. After that, clean the ashes with a metal pan after the embers are cold.
@@AStepInTimeChimneyI’m trying to repair my fireplace and found out that there use to be a ash door. Now the bricks are breaking and falling in. I also have a slab foundation.
My ash dump door is on the inside in my basement. It never had an actual door on it, so I just bought one to cover the opening. Is it necessary to seal it since its on the inside? If so, what would I use? Thanks!
If the ash dump door is on the outside and down at the bottom of the basement, then it is likely a clean out door and can be mortared into the opening. You can also apply it and seal it with mortar fix. Either way, the door should be able to open so you can service the chimney.
@@1969tee No, not really. I bought a cover for mine and just press fit it in. Like I said, it was never covered before, and I don't even use it for an ash dump because I just scoop my ashes out of my fireplace. So I figured sealing it up was not necessary.
@@BrewCityRiderit's not necessary, it's just a cover to separate hot coals from ash shoot, but I'd seal the outside chimney ash door properly, or your gonna have airflow constant in the fireplace even if you use the bottom damper to try to control it and snuff the fire out.

Hello Dear friend..
Have a question please: Is there a proportion for width and length measurements of a brick chimney liner ?
Thank you
