One thing i saw someone say back when this came out, is Neo is able to reproduce everyone's fighting style since she has seen all of them fight, except Ozpin, she has never seen him fight, but since he also uses a cane she just has him do it the same way Roman does it instead of his usual fencing style.
I love the way the table is setup with certain characters opposite each other • Lionheart and Clover, who “betray” our heroes, but one due to cowardice and the other through intense loyalty. • Pyrrha and Ozpin, who both died to Cinder, one setting an example of what are heroes should strive to be and the other failing to give our heroes direction. • Ironwood and Penny who both struggled with humanity informed by our heroes actions, one believed that it was a hindrance to he’s goals and the other wanted nothing more than to be human.
This episode is so dark and so good. I love how they solved the part with Neo not talking by Torchwick and others showing up. Show dont tell with Penny, Pyhra and other talking in person. Also Rick was right about the cat! Good job Rick!
I can't believe Robbie Daymond wasn't actually our friend! Jokes aside, I guess this confirms the Ever After is a predecessor to Remnant rather than a successor based on Curious Cat's comment. The body doubles faces mirroring Neos facial expressions and acting as her mouth was so well done. When Ruby was handed the tea, she was surrounded by illusions of everyone, including her teammates and Jaune. The next time she looks up is them actually looking at her, but she has no idea they aren’t illusions. For all we know she was just drinking it without them to stop her. Completely alone. She probably thought they were illusions, but she still wanted the last thing she saw to be her friends. Damn, what a brilliant allusion to the Mad Hatter's tea party.
JWBY were also wary from Neo's illusions from previous battles, so they're more doubtful about if what they see might be illusions now. Neo's reaction is so indicative of the mental state of her character, like attacking Cinder in V6, just looking for blame now that Roman's gone. I recommend reading RWBY: Roman Holiday, it goes into the depths of Neo's unique psychology and is just a great novel in general.
Neo and her goddamn illusions: "I am a monument, to all your sins." R.I.P. Billy Kametz it was a bitter but pleasant surprise hearing your voice one last time
Ruby doesn't consider the Afterans real, she called them make belief friends in her breakdown last Chapter. But after seeing Little, the only friend who she pushed away, come back for her was the last time we saw her grit her teeth. Back during the auction, notice the camera directing when Jinxy asked Ruby for “enough hope to fill this jar.” The camera directing puts the jade marionette in the jar, implying Ruby’s hope used to be Penny, then symbolically Little appears in the jar. Even when Little is clearly outmatched by powerful foes like Neo and Curious Cat, Little still hasn’t given up hope. So Little dying, trying to save her, was the tipping point. She drank the Tea after looking for the final time at Little and what to her might just be illusions of JWBY. Damn, this is the GOAT!
What people say when lashing out is rarely honest to their thoughts. Ruby called the paper pleasers make believe friends because of how Jaune named them. Not because she doesn't consider Afterans real.
There's a book called "RWBY: Roman Holiday" that goes into Neo's backstory and how she met Roman and does explain those paintings somewhat. The beginning has Neo as a child and the ending is 3-5 years before Volume 1 so it basically covers everything we didn't see in the actual show.
I’d like to bring this up again because you guys still don’t seem to understand why Ruby went off on everyone. Volume 7 to Volume 9 may have been 4 years for the audience, but it’s only been a couple of days for the characters. Probably hasn’t even been a week. Ruby hasn’t had time to process anything that’s happened and they’re all expecting her to be brave and lead them without considering how she feels. Everyone is counting on Ruby. Blake told her that they would follow her lead when they got to Atlas. They expected her to make all the decisions. Which is kinda messed up because she’s the youngest one there except for Oscar. She made the decision to lie to Ironwood. And when one of her plans failed Yang kinda gave her shit for it. Yang: “We’ve been following your lead and things haven’t exactly worked out.” That’s literally what she said to her. You say Ruby should’ve talked to them about it, she literally tried multiple times but no one gave her a chance. Once in the last episode and once in the herbalist episode. Yang was asking Ruby if she was ok but Blake said “Let’s not think about that right now.” Ruby was going to open up but Blake shut her down. And then the final straw was Weiss saying “It’s what they wanted, right Ruby?” As if she’s supposed to have all the answers. So yeah she exploded on them, they kinda gave her no choice. Also factor in the fact that in Volume 7 Ruby found out that the reason she lost her mother is because she went to fight Salem. Then Ironwood betrayed them, then Atlas fell, then Penny died. Again, this all happened within a couple of days. She’s had no time to process any of this. I know it’s hard to keep up with all the details when you watch multiple shows and it’s been 3 years since the last Volume of RWBY for them, but I wish someone could fill them in better on things they overlooked or forgot about because it’s just not fun to see them completely misunderstand the reason a character is acting the way they are.
They don't read these comments. Anything important gets passed on by their moderators. Copying it into every episode isn't really going to make a difference. Also, they seem to understand her better by the end of the episode, that she's suffering under her own perception of how she's failed people. I agree they were maybe a bit too critical of her at the start of the episode, though, given her state of mind. They didn't say anything about timeframes, though, so whether it's happened over a few days or years doesn't seem to matter to them here. They also never said in this episode that she should have tried harder to talk to her team-mates.
@@ZaberFangAT With some distance from the show and from paying attention to its story (still engaged during V9 but the time that's passed since V7 has been quite a long time), while I did understand this before, it is much easier to understand how easy it is to miss the subtext. Even with a rewatch of just V8, that's a good amount of refresh, but the truth is that Ruby's life has been building to this moment since before the first Volume's first Chapter. If one doesn't connect that dot for themselves, realize that what we're seeing Ruby deal with onscreen in this Chapter is something that she deals with every day (to varying degrees), it's hard to grasp the full gravity of the situation. There are so many moments in the series that touch on her inner issues, some subtle, some more direct (though usually very brief and infrequent). If you've seen those moments again after connecting the dots, I think at THAT point, all of this episode makes perfect sense from the get-go.

(At 7:13) Well you never did justify what happened during that fight. And you were the last one to face him. So in Neo's mind, she probably thinks you *did* killed him, intentionally.
It's a shame the crew hasn't been enjoying this season as it takes focus away from the main plot and puts focus on Ruby's development. I definitely understand why, given it's a huge departure from what they like about it. The character work this volume is definitely the highlight but if it's not your thing and the surrounding context is a bit too jarring it makes sense why it would feel like a disappointment. With no guarantee of volume 10, I hope they react to the epilogue so they can see where the main plot is heading and hopefully feel more confidence in the potential future of the show.
"We all remember how *that* ended." Actually, no, they don't. None of the facsimiles know how that ended, because *Neo never witnessed Roman's death.* Now would've been an excellent opportunity for Ruby to point out that Torchwick went on a negative rant in the middle of a flock of grimm and got himself eaten; but the writers forgot that Ruby's the only one who knows that, so this is what we get instead. Every third volume is better than the rest, but they still have avoidable mistakes. It's frustrating. Neo was never on the original menu. She was added in volume two when someone realised the bad guys needed a fourth for the Vytal tournament qualifiers. She became popular when kicking Yang's butt with Monty's choreography, but the original plan never involved her being in Atlas, or inexplicably oneshotting Yang in the central location, or ending up in the Ever After. I was happy to see her again in volume six, but she upstaged Cinder in seven, then spent most of eight playing taxi driver so she wouldn't do it again... she's Soundwave in Transformers, the competent sidekick to egomaniacal leaders.
