    I actually think that Ramsay is not as bad as Joff, for two reasons:
    1) Ramsay was raised in a household in which sadism is considered a virtue; their banner is a flayed man! Joff's family, while sometimes cruel, is not cruel for the sake of cruelty. Joff is sadistic on his own.
    2) Ramsay stands behind his decisions, and in fact, is fearless in his pursuit of his goals. Joff, legitimately the most temporally powerful person on the continent, is still a mewling coward. There is literally no redeeming value to that guy.
    Now, in some ways, I find Ramsay more DANGEROUS than Joff, but nowhere near as despicable.

      This is exactly what I have been trying to explain to my brother

    • @TTUploads
      @TTUploads 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Are you kidding? Joffrey WAS raised in sadism. Cersei whispered into his ear her ideals all his life. This is the women that killed her best friend at the age of 9, molested her baby brother, slaughtered Bastards and sending mothers into slavery, and the list goes on and on.

    • @manuelodonnell1148
      @manuelodonnell1148 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That wasn't sadism on Cersei's part. She can be cold and calculating, or hot-headed and viciously vengeful, but she doesn't hurt random strangers just because she enjoys inflicting pain. Cersei always has a reason; she feels slighted, or threatened, or sees some tactical or strategic gain when she hurts or kills people. She hurts Tyrion because she hates him for killing her mother, and perhaps because she's worried that he is the valonqar, for instance.
      Joff, like Ramsay, was a true sadist: it makes him happy or even horny to hurt people, and he doesn't need any other reason. I'm not suggesting that his upbringing wasn't in many ways effed up, just that he wasn't taught cruelty for its very own sake, the way that Ramsay was.

      well said - I agree. Ramsay inspires hate via fear; he's more a monster than human. One does not want to be in the same room with Ramsay Bolton.
      Joff inspires hate because he gets away with an obscene level malevolence despite being a weakling and a coward. We hate Joff more because of the off-the-chart level of injustices he perpetrates by abusing his position.

    2:05:35 Beginning of psychological diagnosis of Ramsay.

  • @YohanbarDavid
    @YohanbarDavid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Ramsay is simply a more fleshed out example who embodies all of the brutalities in everyday life of early medieval Europe. Like father, Roose, like son. When Ramsay's mother showed up with baby Ramsay asking Roose's help because he's the father, he came close to killing them both for their temerity and impertinence. So, the monster, Ramsay, is actually run-of-the-mill if everyone had the same scrutiny and character development.

    I enjoy listening to you, it's nice to hear someone speak about anti-social disorder/sociopath/psychopath that's experienced on the psychology side of things. 5 years ago I ended up literally being abducted and held for 6 days by someone who was diagnosed as such after the fact, after their arrest. It's actually a struggle to find a professional in the field who really has dealt directly with someone with such brain chemistry.

    I found your podcasts through a friend who would listen to you for your insights on personality disorders, particularly borderline, as I have that myself. She found it very useful to use when rationalising everything that happened between us. Now I'm listening to you talk about Ramsay, my all time favourite character. Strange concept for me! I liked your advise on therapists bringing in the parents to assess their mental health because my father (who has since been diagnosed with NPD) forced me to see a therapist as a teen, and it pissed me the f off to have some stuck-up counsellor try to figure out why I was acting as I did, when I couldn't even talk about the criminal acts going on back home or ELSE. Anyway, keep indulging your little inner narcissist because these podcasts are great to have going in the background while I'm trying to actually get my shit together!

    I think a lot of people hated Joferey but love-to-hate (or hate-to-love) ramsey. Anyone who's watched the misfits loves Iwan Rheon and realizes the depth of his acting ability. From his outspoken, cowardly character (who eventually beomes a badass) to his transformation to the monstrous Ramsey Snow/Bolton, Iwan Rheon displays his major acting chops. People hated Jofferey but, they enjoy Ramsey's dark sense of humor(ex: when he shook that sausage in front of Theon and said "this? No I'm not a barbarian" xD That scene cracked up everyone living room audience at once xD(even considering how fucked up it actually was xD

    Think about ramsay's action in cutting off theon's private parts, is he doing it for fun or pleasure.. maybe. Who is theon? the legitimate heir to the iron island, now that he cant reproduce why choose him as a succesor, in one swift move, ramsay has sown the seed of disunity, he doesnt even have to send an army, theon uncle made that claim for the throne later on. Thus splitting iron island into factions.. Thats how smart ramsay is, smart and brutal, effective..

    that thing you said about the key element of antisocial personality disorder being a lack of empathy makes a lot of sense! I think you're completely right in that, and when you started to talk about the Borderline one I emmediatly thought you were going to say it's a fear of abandonment. Would you say that in the case of Narcissistc personality disorder the key element would be the obsession with feeling special?

    first of all: great great work, keep it up! im a little disappointed that myranda wasnt adressed in any form. i mean doesnt the relationship to her also affect ramsay in some sort of way and i know this video was uploaded before season 6 but when myranda died ramsay did show some empathy and did feel sad and angry about what happened and also id be interested in the psychology of myranda since she fell in love with him although of all his sadistic traits. she even helped him hunt down the other women and i wonder if he manipulated her into doing all of this or if she was just crazy in love or maybe even as sadistic like him

  • @Wilsbourne
    @Wilsbourne 8 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    They actually want to change the story because people didn't like rape? That's what Game of Thrones IS. Rape, violence, torture, horrible things happen. Why does rape cross the line? Because I don't know about you, but I'd rather be raped than burned alive or castrated or have my skull crushed like a watermelon any day of the week. A little girl was burned at the stake, that was WAY worse than Sansa's rape. A baby had his throat cut in season 2 right in front of his mother. Furthermore, Dany got raped in season 1 by Drogo more graphically than Sansa was raped, and Craster's wives were violently raped in season 4 by the Night's Watch mutineers. Sansa's rape was very toned down visually from those other rapes I mentioned; it didn't even show her getting raped, it just zoomed in on Theon.
    Don't get me wrong, Sansa's rape was one of the most disturbing scenes in the entire show, and I hated seeing that happen to her. I'm just confused how anybody could be surprised that Ramsay Bolton would do that. We've SEEN what he does, what did these people think he'd give her a romantic prince charming wedding night? So 1) We've seen more wanton and violent rape scenes before, 2) Ramsay has clearly demonstrated that he is a monster since season 3 and therefore it's no surprise that he'd do such a thing. So I really don't understand the outrage.
    I just don't understand why rape suddenly crosses the line when child murder and wanton violence and torture don't cross the line. Rape is NOT worse than child murder and gruesome murder/torture. If you're going to get all triggered and politically correct when GoT does something offensive, then stop watching the show, because newsflash, offensive things WILL happen, and have been happening since the very first episode.

    • @hexgirl_x
      @hexgirl_x 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i think a lot of people were mad bc in the books it was someone else who marries ramsay and is raped by him, people thought it was removing a lot of sansa's agency that she'd gone through so much to get and erases her storyline in the vale where she starts to establish herself and play the game instead of going back to another hostage situation

    i would love to see an episode about Tyrion.
    I know he's not a villain and he doesn't have a specific personality disorder that I can see but I still think it could be really interesting. Also, there is a lot more insight for Tyrion than for Ramsay or Joffrey since he's a major POV character in the books and you know, he's just such a complex character, going from being absolutely scrupulous to his enemies to being almost knightly in his defense of the innocents, from being an arrogant Lannister to being a self-confidence-lacking dwarf. So I would really love an in-depth analysis about him!

    That was good, these 3 hours flew by! Thanks from New Caledonia, sorry if my English is a bit awkward...
    I chuckled several times at the "post trigger alerts" during the first hour, good stuff.
    One very interesting thing (or so I thought) about Ramsay is the scene in the books in which Roose and Theon/Reek ride together and discuss Ramsay (when Roose tries to make use of Theon), and he talks about the first Heek/Reek.
    I don't have the book close to me but the quote was something like "But I do I wonder who corrupted the other, Reek or Ramsay?"
    The 1st Reek was obviously deranged and a necrophiliac, and he was Ramsay's teacher in arms (Roose comment that Reek was "strong as a bull" even if he had that smelly illness) which explains his fighting style.... and could have been a much bigger influence to young Ramsay than just being his whipping boy, a toy to order around.
    Keep up the good work, too bad you couldn't have watched the second episode of season 6 by the time you made this video because.... well, you know. *Spoiler Alert don't read if you're not at S6 ep2* .........................................
    after he kills Roose (in the same way Roose killed Robb Stark at the Red Wedding) and especially Walda and the baby, you can tell he doesn't enjoy it. He forces himself to watch, almost turning his head away a couple times, that was interesting behavior coming from him..

I'm a real fan of Ramsay since I've listened to this. I'm doing a reread of the books to get the Ramsay info. I've also looked at his TH-cam appearances. Looks like he even gets worse in season six.

      Thomas McCurdy The thing about the Sansa rape is that it was the only thing that made sense for the characters. Ramsay is that kind of person. When he wants sex, he will get sex. Nothing else would have made sense. Did honestly expect Ramsay to just give Sansa a peck on the check then go to bed?

    Its strange to me that people are okay with all types of carnage, violence, destruction, and all manner of horrible things, yet they lose their minds over a rape scene. Its not as if rape was being glorified, it was showing how horrible it is. But of course they caved in and changed the story after uproar on twitter. I really do not get it. The scene is supposed to make you upset and uncomfortable, and they had to show how evil Ramsay can be to make you hate him even more.

    Why people enjoy game of thrones is simple, it all became clear at the red wedding, nobody is safe, the stakes are real and plot armor is rare, even though some characters have had some plot armor, you cant predict the outcome of the next episode, you cant predict starks winning a battle or whatever, that is way more thrilling to watch that some random tv show where each episode has its general formula and at the end everything returns to normal. That plus the meaty parallel story telling(if you are going to kill off characters people get attached to you need to bring in new ones at a similar rate, so you need many parallel story lines going in order to do that without hickups).

    1. Awesome show. Very interesting and informative! You've earned yourself another subscriber and tbh I don't understand why you have so little subscribers considering your podcasts are really well made, at least imo :)
    2. I think that the diagnosis is very accurate. I've just began studying Psychology at uni and from my comparably limited knowledge I would've diagnosed him exactly the same.
    3. Q: Can Sexually Sadistic Personality not be diagnosed for people who enjoy hurting their rape victim while they are raping them, opposed to only being turned on by seeing people suffer? I hope you understand what I meant... And would you then consider Euron Greyjoy to have this personality disorder, since he was turned on when he shame walked Yara and the Sandsnakes through KL on s7 ep3?
    4. I haven't watched your other GoT related videos (this is my first one in fact), but if you haven't already can you please do a video about Arya's and Sansa's development and means of adapting to their circumstances throughout the series? And also I'd love it if you did a video about Jaime Lannister's development and essential redemption, and Littlefinger (also an Antisocial, though more of a Sociopath and a Psychopath imo), Ollena Tyrell and Margaery's different technics of influencing others for their own benefits.
    Thanksssssss!! ^_^

    killing 2 birds with 1 stone? opening scene of battle of the bastards starts with ramsay leading rickon to the battlefield and cutting him loose, giving him the imaginary chance of escape. His "half brother" reacts maniacally and tries to save him, all in vain, whats next? engulf in vengeance, jon snow disregard his war tactics and charged, the army cant let their leader go at it by himself, thus all are obligated to charge. In 1 action, ONE, ramsay potentially might have killed not 2 birds, but flock of inter species birds with 1 stone.Ramsay is a calculated, cunning, ruthless, efficient, brilliant bastard. and he has a wicked sense of humour, when asked about his father death by the northern noble and the guy cheekily said he would kill his father too, ramsay just grinned..
    His downfall, underestimating sansa contribution, who wouldve thought that sansa would reconcile with the very person that sold her to him.

    Btw, I personally don't agree that Ned was all that honorable or good. He had a holier then thou attitude but in the end was hypocritical, because he expected everyone to keep to his principles except for himself or the people he loved. If someone broke their vows, he decided that they were wrong either way, there were no good reasons for someone to break their vows, so off with their head, except for Ned himself or people Ned loved, they could break their vows for good reasons, but no one else (see jaime and the night's watch guy) furthermore he thought that putting stannis on the throne vs war was "no choice at all" so basically the small folk who would die in such a war were all nessacary sacrifices to put a guy on the throne who he wanted on the throne, because Ned decided that he was the rightful king, while he should know at that point that "rightful king" doesn't mean anything considering the fact that he himself fought against a "rightful king" because he happened to be crazy. So yeah... thousends of lives for putting a guy of Ned's choice on the throne... ok then. I mean, it'd have been different if he'd done it because Joffrey was a monster, but that wasn't why Ned did it... it was all about his precious honor that he hid behind which was really just a shield for him to justify his own actions in my opinion. I mean... I have no doubt that he believed in it, but that doesn't make it right if you ask me.

    • @johnredden743
      @johnredden743 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically "the rightful king" never even had a claim since he was Jaime's bastard and we all know Stannis wold have been better than Joffrey.

      INCBlackbird I think you’ve missed out on something important to the story-everything or most of what you stated about Ned is true but that was his surface character he had much deeper motivations. Being honorable is usually associated with doing what is right, but Ned would disregard his honor if they conflicted especially when it came to children. He lies to protect Jon and admits guilt to protect Sansa. He tells Cersei everything in the hopes of avoiding her children’s deaths and falls out with King Rob twice arguing about killing Targaryen children both past and present. His actions take place under the guise of honor but that’s not who he truly is. Truly honorable characters do terrible things in the name of it all. The beauty of the ‘honorable’ Ned Stark is discovering where he draws the line l

    I do find Ramsay to be a frightening character and I can only hope his death will be a long, frightful and painful one as he was to his victims. However, usually characters of this caliber die a quick death.
    Joffrey was worse because of how abusive he was as a king and no one had the power to really curbed his juvenile tyrant except forTywin Lannister. When Joffrey offended him, Tywin sent him to bed.
    Joffrey's death was too short.

    Dr. Honda, Interesting listening to your comments & thanks for them. So, 'Le droit du seigneur' did exist in the real world, not only in Westeros, but was actually practised by European nobility up to the 18th century. As this was obviously an extremely delicate and ambiguous subject, it was taken up in literature and music - the most famous references are probably 'Le mariage de Figaro', a theatre comedy by French playwright Beaumarchais from the late 18th century which was turned into an opera by Viennese composer Mozart later on. The whole piece is about a count who wants to use his 'right' when his man-servant Figaro is getting married to one of the household's woman-servants and them and the countess forging intrigues preventing him from using his 'right'. It foreschadowed the French Revolution and was actually forbidden in some neighbouring states as rulers feared the political impact. The entire 'Game of Thrones'-saga - which I am only watching, not reading - is full of all kinds of historical and mythological references and allusions, probably that's why it is so absolutely fascinating. Tx again for your podcast, rgds.

    btw, I haven't studied psychology myself, but I'm very interested in it, I've read quite a lot about it and I like to diagnose characters, though of course recognising that I don't have enough knowledge to make a proper diagnosis, it's more for fun and practice. That said I think Theon has a lot of narcessistic elements. But not in the same way that Cersei for example has them. He doesn't lack empathy, But it's more as an overcompensation for an extremely low self esteem. I'd be interested to hear your opinion on that hypothesis.

    Rhialisse Xavorin, I agree. The rape of Sansa was bad (very bad) and let's not forget that it happened in front of Theon, whom, at this point she believes killed her two younger brothers. However, burning your own daughter at the stake, killing two innocent farm boys (falsely said to be the young Stark boys by Theon), flaying an old lady who let Sansa know that she has friends in the North (candle in the window), and repeatedly stabbing a pregnant woman to death (red wedding) are fundamentally worse.

    Ok, I really like your analysis of Ramsay, and tbh, I don't think it has to be one of the hypotheses that you suggested, I think it's a combination of most or even all of them. The only thing I think there's really nothing solid on is the situation with his mother. Because I don't think we have any way of knowing how she responded to Ramsay, your hypothesis on that is solid and logical but I think it would be just as logical that she clung to him and wanted her son in Roose' castle to make herself feel better? I think there's no way of knowing how she responded to Ramsay, and I really want to know more about that so I can properly analyse it.

    Really. I don't hate Ramsay. But I don't do this because I like him having power. He's a far more complex character than most fans/readers think. That's why I like him.
    (I like all characters. I find it difficult to hate fictional characters.)
    I read the books and watch the show.
    I think you're doing the right thing - analyzing him in a psychological way. IMO, Ramsay is a high functioning sociopath.
    I have experience in psychology, and I worked with sociopaths. If you want to, you can drop me a PM over here. I'd like to get in touch with you, I guess.

    People miss the point with the Sansa-rape-topic. It's not about showing or choosing a rape scene. It is about making a wrong decision - basically sacrificing this character's integrity - for convenience (and stepping over heavy issues like rape by saying words like "made an informed choice" and "is an empowered woman" - quote D&D). Who in their right mind would let a character who is obviously one of the main and good protagonists and who went through hell for 4 seasons be convinced by about 5 sentences (from Littlefinger) to marry the guy/family, who killed her brother and mother? How LOGICAL is that? And for what? Because they needed a stand-in for the Jane-character from the books to free Reek/Theon. Empowerment my ass! This character was butchered for a more convenient storyline. So this is bad, lazy writing, which offends anyone who knows how character development should work in stories, especially in such huge productions - and this has nothing to do with the books. They could have let her be raped or whatever if IT MADE SENSE, but it did not. It became a rape/sexscene/women-issue the moment D&D opened their mouths and spit out the most stupid sentences ever - in combination with the meaningless rape of a protagonist, it is just ridiculous. How can anyone present such a scene, with no logic to it, and talk about empowerment??? They should have kept their mouths shut. Oh, and don't forget the so "tasteful" name of the episode (Unbent, Unbroken)... I mean, common, is this a 10 Million/episode production or school cinema? (just keep rolling my eyes)

Now that I think about it, it legit doesn't make a lot of sense... you're right. LF is smarter than that... it's a weird choice by the writers... xD
