    Nice concept!
    W124 is quite a strong entry, although I would have gone for a 200d (from '86 - '89), but finding a good one might be tricky.

    Another SM on the fridge of honour, here.
    Our Mini Convertible came from Cross Keys garage, too - the business unfortunately long gone - now a Petrol station with and M&S grab store on site.
    They had a wonderful array of classic cars for sale or just to drool over.
    Sadly missed!

    I had a Alfa 159 2.0 diesel with a 70 litre tank which would give me roughly 560 miles of range. I now have a little 1.5 petrol/hybrid Honda CR-Z which only has a 40 litre tank and is probably very close in terms of range to that rather lovely looking Mercedes.

    Great to see the 2nd team launched (first) ... Order is overrated!
    Of course some of the tasks you have planned will have a destination, so a balance between time to get points and distance lost to traffic to perform the task will come in to play. Really intriguing!
    Is adding an extra fuel tank into the boot excluded?

    That's probably a 4sp auto.. would probably be like my old 2.5 190D, comfortable but slow and not particularly economical.. I used to be sat at a decent RPM on the motorway but it needed to stay under 2.8k for decent mpg.. my E38 costs less at some motorway speeds or when towing, and not massively more anywhere else outside a town.
    Also, don't bet on an old petrol merc being a delight for diy reliability.. I still seem to see more facebook posts from the 190 group about petrol engine management than E38 problems.. and I hated dealing with Mercedes TPS parts.

    I would be up for it.
    I'm Dutch, fully proficient English speaker, i have LHD experience in a LHD car (circle of Ireland) i'm an ex taxi driver and i have about 45y of DIY car tinkering experience. Including rallycar building and servicing in a rallyteam. (Could be handy just in case)

    Not sure why range matters that much as UK has plenty of fuel stations and usually filling up does not take many minutes. An EV would be hopeless though!

    • @robertimrie3710
      @robertimrie3710 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It's for charity so EVs could be a fun addition. Bjorn Nyland covers 1000km in under 9 hours in the best EVs, so still plenty driving. EV contestants must do a physical or comical challenge while charging. More challenges equals more views and donations

    • @craigyllyn
      @craigyllyn 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Careful planning with tasks and loo stops and the ev team will never stop for fuel…
      The package donation alone will be a few hundred miles free stop that the petrol won’t be able to take advantage of

    • @UPnDOWN
      @UPnDOWN  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Because the ultimate thing that will affect the outcome is average speed. I personally don't think anyone will better 45mph avg. speed across 24hrs, and I also think the ones who win will be the ones with the highest avg. speed.
      Stopping for fuel doesn't just take a few minutes. Think about it - you've got two cars doing 70mph on the motorway, and one slows down and drives into the services. Before the car has even pulled up at the pump, how much further has the other car travelled?
      Now factor in the fuelling up, paying and getting going again (assuming nobody stops for food or toilets) - how much further has the other car travelled now?
      Then assume that the cars may cover *approx* 1000-1200 miles, only some need to stop twice, and others three times. The ones who stop the third time suddenly have a big disadvantage!

    I can lend my Jeep to a team. It does a healthy 15.7 mpg. JK 😂

  • @Zadster
    @Zadster 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I know fuel isn't the point, but it still has to be paid for.
    24hrs*60mph=1440 miles. At say 40mpg = 36 gallons or 164 litres. At £1:49/l = £244. So over £300 for the Merc. Hope they have deep pockets, that Merc autobox will be lossy now.
    I'm no CO2 eco-weenie, but 7200 miles and £1200/820 litres burnt (5 cars) in 24 hrs... makes me uncomfortable.
    Frustratingly, its dark at 6pm, so only 10.5 hours of it will be in daylight, nearly 14 hours of darkness on the time-lapse GoPros or whatever. Doesn't make for good content. Now, had it been around midsummer, a team could make it to Inverness _and_ still do the NC500, all in daylight. That would be a hell of a multipart (or one part!) video.
    Totally up for it though, would love to see cars sponsored. Hopefully one will be a press pool Tesla looking to show off fast charging.
