Haha - have watched this a couple times in prep to try this - and tonight I'm going for it - and have the volume up now - didn't realize I'd be head banging while working! Appreciate the craft through and through!
Awesome, good luck with it and let me know how it goes for you! These have worked well BTW and my son caught a pretty good sized bass on his this summer (probably between 2-3 lbs).
David Lee thank you! If you like these sorts of videos, please consider subscribing to my channel! It helps me out (TH-cam recently changed subscriber requirements) and if you turn on notifications TH-cam will tell you when I upload new content. I also have a video just about the line holders here: th-cam.com/video/c251y1GjPhw/w-d-xo.html Thanks again and I hope to hear back from you when you get your line holders installed!
That was a pretty awesome DIY on that rod brother. Man you are killing it with all the views you have on your videos! That's so awesome! Keep up the great work and have a great day!
Wow! I just do it as a hobby but you can really save yourself some money making some things and also you can make parts you can't just go out and buy. Handy thing to have around!
MeDad started it as a hobby, however he was a tool and die maker. Then in 1983 we joned forces and starting making parts commercially in the basement. In three years we grew pretty good, my dad retired, I purchased a big garage like 9 cars big and started adding employees and machinery as soon as I had profit to buy them. We did big work. Our lathes could swing 24" in diameter x 12 feet long and our milling machines could hold that weight also for cutting big key ways and so it went. First I purchased used big machines then as profits came in new machines. By the time I retired I had a mixed bag of new and used and two CNC machines one lathe and one mill. I can mig tig and arc weld too. In they years 2010 I liquid dated everything, except the property and moved into to it because I gave my X wife the house in the divorce. I had broken my back and went on disability as it took me a long time to get over it, and I still have nerve damage and problems but I"m better than i was and this year i'll retire. I'm just to the point where I can take my Kayak out again and do some fishing and I can't wait, LoL.... I'm sure most of what I forgotten will come back to me as I start in fishing. I've had my deep cell Interstate battery on trickle charge all winter so my electric motor should run good and last awhile via battery life. And that is my story........
Wow that is really neat that you all were able to grow a business together like that. Probably created a lot of memories along the way too. I'm about done with a prototype of a fishing rod hand wrapping jig that I really feel like will be better than the other ones currently on the market and plan to make them out of my shop and start out selling on eBay. The jigs are used by people who enjoy buying rod blanks and wrapping the guides on and building their own rods. I will be uploading a video on the prototype in the near future and will start selling them on eBay after I figure out how to speed the process up a bit. I will probably will be making jigs to speed up hole placement drilling for screw holes and things like that. I don't expect them to be a high demand item but I'm going to see if I can sell some anyway. Not a whole lot of average Joe's building their own rods but there are some. Glad you will be able to get back into fishing again and that is great you are progressing in your recovery. I know that must have been difficult!
I wish you good luck with your business. You never know what may happen. Often one thing leads to another. But you are doing what is in your heart and I applaud you for that. Thanks for your reply, we'll be in touch as more of your videos come out. Who knows I may decide I want to make my own poll too :) Thanks for your kind comments....
*This is my first tenkara rod so nothing to compare to. But as far as fit in finish I am impressed. Thought i would try tenkara due to shoulder issues heavy weight fly rods are getting harder to use.*
Oh thank you! I stopped by your channel and left you a comment on your newest video talking about an important subject to me. If you don't see it there, look in your spam comments folder because I posted a link in it and sometimes that sends it to spam. Thank you!
Looks great! I have a couple Tenkara USA Rods and a 8' wetfly rod. Saw this one on amazon and bought it just for fun. Arrived yesterday and I was immediately impressed. Perfect for my boys (5 and 7) to mess around with...and no big worries if it breaks. I may look at doing the paracord grip. Your cork looks great but I don't have a lathe unfortunately. Did you ever consider replacing the plastic end cap with something heavier and more durable? Not sure if you did the paracord video but I'd be interested in seeing how you did that.
Thank you! I just finished a paracord grip tutorial that can be seen here: th-cam.com/video/Zq8mPF-urrU/w-d-xo.html I have thought about replacing the butt cap. You would need to find the thread size and pitch but once you find out that info you could start looking for a bolt or something like that to cut down to a proper size. Aluminum would be a good choice but even a solid plastic bolt would be better than what comes with the rod. An upgraded rod plug would be a nice addition too. Thanks for watching and I'm always happy to hear about families fishing together. Good luck with whatever you do with your rod and I'm sure the kids will enjoy using it!
oh yeah, the rod cap is what I meant...haven't had a chance to fish it yet but at the very least its a perfect backup so a day on the water doesn't get ruined if i break my main tenkara rod.
Hey thanks! I have a video where my son catches a nice little bass (probably around 2 lbs) with his and it held up just fine. th-cam.com/video/0KJtw4vMAxg/w-d-xo.html Thanks for checking it out and I sub'd your channel an will see what all you have going on over there. Tight lines!
The rod I bought already had a lillian. I have used extremely small diameter Paracord for lillian. You can find it in craft stores. Remove the inner threads and you are left with the braided nylon shell whick will work. You may also look around for another source for lillian. You will want to look for hollow braided nylon. Hope that helps!
Have you caught a fish with it yet? As you know, just got mine and am anxious to see how far I can take it till it breaks. Interesting link to the eBay version in one of the comments - it advertised being a carbon fiber and ours are just metal.
Kayak Hacks Fishing yes sir! I use an actual Tenkara rod but I made these for my wife and kids. These are actually fiberglass rods. I haven't seen the metal ones. Take a look at this video, my son landed a really nice Bass last weekend in his. He uses the one with the Paracord grip seen at the end of this video. Last weekend was his first time using it, I don't think it will be the last. My daughter has caught some trout with hers. You can see one of them at the end of this video (a picture of her with one of the trout she caught). Take a look at this video and you can see my son landing a good sized bass at about the 7 minute mark: th-cam.com/video/0KJtw4vMAxg/w-d-xo.html
Wow you really have it all to do this...this is so cool...i am not this creative , or have the tools, i just write songs,,,oh ya paracord...i want that too
I have similar line keepers on my rods, the difference is that they are held on with rubber washers. Definitely going to wrap and epoxy them. I liked the wire you use. What kind of material is that? Paper clips did the job buy yours look professional. Thanks!
@@TheFishingHobby great song!! I should see if shazaam can tell me. Made a makeshift tenkara as a prototype. Need to get a bit more line on it but it really fishes nicely. Be perfect for one of my kids. Should be a fun transition from spin casting.
@@TheFishingHobby ya I found it as well. I think the next tenkara style rod I do I'm going to leave the guides on the rod and just tie off the line around the cork. Maybe leave 25-39 feet of line and then a leader. It's easy to make it shorter but not having enough line to get over to the far bank is a bit frustrating as that seems to be where all the fish are. Lol!
+The Shenanigans hey thanks so much, totally surprised to see you comment on my channel! Thank you for the video you did on the recent monetization policy changes...that is very much appreciated!
Thanks! I don't use anything on my cork. It is just a personal preference because I like the feeling of raw cork on my hands. I would think some water based exterior urethane varnish would work well for a finish on cork.

WTF I'don't wanna buy a lathe just to build a fishing pole!
Cold Blooded Fasist, no lathe needed. I used it because I already had it. You can buy cork rings and build a jig to shape them using a drill.
I loved that made in japan......china!!!!
It shipped straight from China, I know they aren't importing rods in China from Japan to sell us for less than $10 shipped 😁
You built the rod handle not the rod
Rod builders typically build rods on premade rod blanks. Hexagon bamboo rods are about the only blanks that are built by rod builders.
It is kind of like custom car builders. They don't cast the engine blocks, cylinder heads or transmission cases themselves. Doesn't mean they aren't custom car builders.
