    Great job on the wipers.
Idea......I know they did not have any ball-oilers on the original one but you could add one on each.
It would make it very easy to add oil down the road.
I know another project idea...Ha! Ha!
    My list never stop growing.
Just wait until you get that 3-D printer...then the list will get bigger.....LOL
I love mine and you will then want to start casting your own small parts.....Fun, Fun, Fun.
    Thank you another great video.

I modified my HFT portable band saw and hung it on a stand and made a small 6"X6" table screwed to the saw. That made it work well and more safely than the small platen that came with it. Use a plastic hand clamp for the trigger. Use a power strip to power the saw and turn it on and off. It's advisable to us a power strip with a breaker on it. If the blade stalls it will fry the motor in a heartbeat. I did that on my new one! The breaker will protect it.

I was a goldsmith where every casting is hand finished with files and a sanding disc on a flex shaft tool. i'm now getting more into machine shop practice.
It's funny to see machinists getting all skittish when it comes to shaping metal free hand, when a hundred years ago, the most precise measuring tool in a shop would have been a pair of compass type calipers. I have been reading in the Lindsay publications books: "Echos From the Oil Country", where at times, they had to go around the shop and make sure everyone's steel rule was the same length.

Nice job on these. As a safety note, you might want to get a foot switch (the type that you plug a tool in to). At 18:00, I shuddered a little. Zip tie the switch in the tool and plug into a foot switch, then you have both hands free for the work, and in a more comfortable position. I use foot switches on a number of tools, including my largest drill press at times.

Move the table over and drill the next 4 holes. Counter bore these holes setting a proper depth. Move the table back and counter bore the last 4 holes. Works for the other two pairs too.

Any reason to drill a hole from the top to the felt to drop oil or will waste oil on the ways be enough?

    • @Patriot1776
      @Patriot1776 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Waste oil on the ways should be enough. The apron of the lathe has its own oil reservoir with oil pump and lines. That oil pump is operated whenever the carriage is moved along the length of the bed, and the oil lines meter way oil to everywhere its needed in the crossslide, saddle, and apron, including of course on the ways under the saddle, so oil is always being pumped onto the ways whenever the carriage and saddle is being moved along bed during longitudinal turning operations. So, as long as the apron's oil reservoir is kept topped off, there shouldn't be a need to pre-oil the way wipers.

@Steven Andrews And part of the servicing of the apron, IIRC, Keith did find he needed to fab up new oil lines out of copper tubing to insure the oil pump would be getting oil to every lubrication point that needed it.

Your new vertical sander you’ll find is one of the handiest tools in your shop. It is also one of the most dangerous tools in the shop. To make my point take one cotton work gloves when the sander is running and just drop it near the worktable and the Sand belt. If and whenthe sand belt grabs the gloves be thankful that your fingers were not inside the glove. In my shop it is mandatory that anytime somebody has to have fingers within 6 inches of the moving belt that they will have a fixture or a suitable tool to keep all body parts at least 6 inches from the belt ! I know you were done work around your table saw as close as you are what’s the sander. Get to close in the outcome would be similar.

Couldn't you just have used the 3D printed parts? Is there enough force on them that they would need to be made from aluminum? Or was this just to keep the originality in a restoration?

Probably, Keith Fenner used CNCed Delrin to make way wipers. This Keith probably just wanted aluminum like the originals.

Surprised you didn't modify them like Richard suggests so they will shove the chips to the side since you were making them from scratch. I guess it is a restoration though so keeping it original is probably just as well. :-)
