One is outgoing and expressfull. One is more introvert and dont want to show off. They are just different beautiful in their musicianship.
Yes they have backtrack sometimes on organ, synth, and piano only. And only when she obviously cant play both at a time. All is played by Miako
And yes some choir and intro for the concert is backtrack.

  • @salsaucedo
    @salsaucedo ปีที่แล้ว +149

Miyako "The Golden Touch" Watanabe is a virtuoso on piano as well as guitar, in her compositions, she loves to incorporate and infuse classical elements to create a new phenomenal sound to metal. This is her song and it is quite evident in the style she writes her compositions. All five women are trained pianists but Miyako and Asami are the only ones who do play the piano on specific songs. So, because of this style of writing many confuse Lovebites as being symphonic metal and there is no way they are symphonic, otherwise they would have said in many of their interviews. Haruna is probably one of the best drummers out today, the way you witnessed her today on a two-hour show she is relentless and never breaks out a sweat. Asami the singer comes from RnB and Soul music background and she studied ballet as well, Midori started to learn piano at around two years of age and electric organ at eight but gave up both upon entering university and started to learn guitar at 20. She is a graduate of Musicians Institute Japan in Osaka and listed Kiko Loureiro, Nuno Bettencourt, and Yngwie Malmsteen as her biggest guitar influences. Generally speaking, Midori said that she plays the “flashy and aggressive” guitar solos in the band, while Miyako plays the “slower, more melodic” ones. Miyako has played classical piano since she was three and guitar since high school. Having grown up listening to classic rock bands like Deep Purple and Rainbow with her mother, Miyako ended up being very influenced by Ritchie Blackmore. But she has also been influenced by more modern guitarists, such as Timothy Henson and Scott LePage from Polyphia. It was Disarmonia Mundi’s Ettore Rigotti who inspired Miyako to start composing and arranging songs. Haruna has played drums since she was thirteen years old, and began writing songs on a keyboard at fourteen. From elementary school up to high school, her favorite band was B’z, but she became interested in heavy metal after hearing Halloween’s Master of the Rings. As a result, she stated her basic drumming style is that of Uli Kusch. She met Miho and plays drums in Destrose, another all-female metal band that disbanded in 2015. Lovebites were formed in Tokyo in 2016 by bassist Miho and drummer Haruna. The two met while members of Destrose, another all-female metal band that disbanded in 2015. Miho has been strongly into hard rock and heavy metal since junior high and started playing bass in high school. Her favorite bands are Iron Maiden, Pantera, Mötley Crüe, and Anthrax. She referred to her playing as more showmanship than technical and cited Steve Harris as a particular influence alongside the style of Nikki Sixx.

Thank you for your thoughtful and expert analysis, it is truly appreciated. The genius of Lovebites is their homage to Chopin "Revolutionary" Etude Op.10 No.12 with their lyrics (regarding heroic sacrifice for the battle that drove Chopin to create this memorable composition) in keeping it in the same C minor key and melding classical music with hard rock. There have been many collaboration of classical compositions with classical hard rock, but this particular composition should sit in the hall of rock and roll fame as one of the best ever.
And yes, Miyako (the pianist/guitarest) is an extremely special talent. Unicorn status.

Mr. Cieslinksi, I found your analysis and reaction to this song refreshing and insightful because you are a music teacher. I grew up during the 50s and 60s when music was considered a very important subject in grade school and I know you can relate to the importance of music education. Many who react to Lovebites, particularly Swan Song, don’t really get the depths of talent that we’re witnessing with this band. You instantly saw that Miyako had years of classical piano training. She’s been playing since her parents started her lessons at the very young age of three. She truly is a world class concert pianist. Miyako began piano at 3 yo and was on track to be a certified teacher and/or concert pianist. At 17/18 she decide she wanted to play Rock/Metal music. Got herself a guitar and a "How To" book. NO Lessons!! She wrote the music for "Swan Song" with Asami, vocals, is the lyricist. Miyako and Midori, guitar, practice/rehearse in Miyako's home studio to ensure they stay in sync.
The arts are still taught in Japan from an early age. Talent/ability is recognized and encouraged with an infrastructure to support them.

Great reaction. Welcome to the best band you had never heard of and wish you had five years ago. Lovebites are definitely the real deal and IMO one of the most talented and vesatile bands out there today. A once in a generation band and Miyako and Midori (blond guitarist) are one of, if not the best, twin lead guitarists, male or female, playing today. The question is whether Miyako (guitar/piano) is a world class classical pianist who is also a world class rock/metal guitarist or is she a world class rock/metal guitarist who is also a world class classical pianist. She has played classical piano 29 of her 32 years and started to teach herself to play the guitar around 15 years ago. You should check out 'Edge of the World', 'Set the World on Fire', 'Frozen Serenade', ''Break the Wall; 'Epilogue', 'Empty Daydream' 'Shadowmaker' and 'Holy War' to really appreciate the range and versatility of Lovebites. Always choose the live performances which fans prefer to their their studio recordings, and having watched 'Swan Song' you can see why. There are around another fifty gems like this one to go.

    LOVEBITES - Swan Song lyrics:
If this was the last day you could live on this earth
Would you still go on, accusing someone for today
It’s better to fail than not do anything at all
It is not the length, but depth of life that counts
    Oh brave soldier
    Oh gallant warrior
Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla
    Believe what’s in your soul
For death will come to all
You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven
    Floating lotus
    You are so graceful
    Saintly and glorious
    Till the end of time
    Floating lotus
    You are so beautiful
    Sing me your sweet song
    The legend of the swan
If you’ve never hoped, you’ve never been though despair
Ignorance is bliss, it’s easier to not care
You might think it’s meaningless to sacrifice a life
Sometimes the life of one can save so many more
    Oh brave soldier
    Oh gallant warrior
Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla
    Believe what’s in your soul
For death will come to all
You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven

The Chopin piece performed by Miyako (guitar/keyboard) as the intro is "Etude OP10, No12", known as "Revolution Etude"
In 1831, an uprising of some officers and civilians against the Polish government under the de facto control of the Russian Empire, dubbed the "November Revolution", failed due to the direct intervention of Russian forces. Chopin is informed of this news during his travels. he lost his place to return to.
When the Russian army invaded Warsaw, Chopin's agents released "Etude OP10, No.12" in Paris. People called it a "revolutionary etude" because of the agent's exaggerated promotion of the song.
Miyako composed "SwanSong" with reference to this "revolutionary etude" and Dvorak's "New World Symphony".
Former ballerina Asami (vocals) wrote a poem inspired by Norse mythology and "Swan Lake" based on the historical background of "Revolutionary Etude".
"SwanSong" is a requiem dedicated to the warriors who fought to reclaim fatherland, a masterpiece that only LOVEBITES can complete.
LB's songs will give you new discoveries and surprises for each song.

So good to hear the thoughts of a musician on these women. Bear in mind that this song is just a part of a 2 hour show. Most of it at this speed.
Miyako is a trained concert pianist. Started at the age of three. I think she picked up the guitar at about 18, or 19, and turned her attention to rock & metal. Praise the Gods for that. So many more songs in their catalogue to watch. Try 'Scream For Me' (live in concert) for some sensational guitar solo's. Fourteen in one song. Ten of them in Battle Mode. th-cam.com/video/acwkphgzNg8/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for the reaction! LOVEBITES is a phenomenal band, all the ladies are talented musicians! For 5 years they have recorded about 50 songs and all the songs are very good!
🐺Miho - bass, backing vocals (in August 2021 she left the band).
    🐺Haruna - drums.
    🐺Midori - guitars, backing vocals.
🐺Miyako (Mi-Ya)- guitars, piano, keyboards, backing vocals.
    🐺Asami - lead vocals, piano.
"Etude Op.10, No.12" ( or "Revolutionary Etude") by the great Polish composer Frederic Chopin, which was written in 1831 and is dedicated to the Polish patriots who raised an uprising (1830-1831) against the Russian Empire, whose troops occupied Poland.
"Swan song" ( lyrics - Asami , music -Miyako) from the third album LOVEBITES "Electric Pentagram" (2020). For many centuries (starting from Ancient Greece) there is a legend, according to which swans, non-singing, "silent" birds, acquire a voice a few moments before death, and this dying singing of swans is amazingly beautiful.
"Etude" by F. Chopin and "Swan Song" are dedicated to the warriors who died in battle. Therefore, at the concert, "Etude" and "Swan Song" are played together.
In an interview given after the release of the "Electric Pentagram" album, Asami (a former ballerina, studied classical ballet for about 16 years before becoming a singer) said that when she wrote the lyrics of the song, she was thinking about the famous ballet P.I. Tchaikovsky "Swan Lake" . During the performance of the song, Asami imitates the Swan (hand movements). And in the final part (piano Miyako), symbolizing the death of the Swan, Asami depicts the dying Swan on stage, as in the ballet Swan Lake. Because the camera at the end of the song is focused on Miyako playing the piano, Asami's "death of the Swan" was not captured on video.

Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Lovebites is one of the best bands in our country. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

1:49 Great observation of yours, Bob. I heard that in some radio programme these days: Many aspiring pianists do not have enough reach in their hands to get enough distance between thumb and smallest finger while playing. That reduced their musical options, but some of them nevertheless practice, practice, practice, and spread their hands in spite of their pain, to the point that their hands ache or the joints, tendons, etc. even painfully inflame. That is sad, and absolutely absurd. All joy of playing leaves them, and just tension, frustration and the will to "make it to the top, no matter what" is left. But that is not the way it should be.
Miyako is just made for music, and for playing "her" instruments. But if someone is just *not* made for doing something: Better let go, than ending up in tension, frustration and failure. No-one wants to listen to a bad-mooded musician without charisma but covered with bandages and "full of painkillers".

Miho (the bassist) founded the group and sadly left when their 5-year was up, but the band did a global search for a new bassist recently, and I think we're all waiting with baited breath for some sort of comeback now :)
And, yes, as others have said, I've seen a number of "top 5 female guitarists in Japan" lists which include both Midori and Miyako, and yet in Lovebites they effortlessly trade off rhythm and lead with each other, which is remarkable to those of us old dudes who grew up in the "standard American rock band" world where everyone kinda stayed in their lanes. I have spent the past 2 years falling deeper and deeper into Japan's metal / rock stuff. Pure gold.

I believe that Lovebites currently has 45 songs in their catalog, not counting a couple of instrumentals. Miyako composed 20 of the 45 and both instrumentals. Three of the other members have also composed songs but in collaboration with a keyboardist/composer named Mao - Miho (10 songs), Asami (4 songs) and Midori (2 songs). Mao has written 5 songs for the band. Haruna has contributed one song which she wrote prior to the creation of Lovebites. Miyako and Miho have cowritten one song. Only one song, on their first album, was written independent of any member of the band or Mao.
Other than the composition with Miho, Miyako works completely alone. She also works very fast. For example, the most recent full album called Electric Pentagram had 12 songs, 6 of which were written by Miyako (including Swan Song). She composed all six songs and sent out the demos before any of the other six songs.
As well as she played in the video, she is really not a fan of electronic keyboards or plastic keys. She is old school and prefers the percussive nature of an actual piano as well as wood keys. I think swan Song would have been even better had she been at an actual grand piano instead of that Roland..
And if Miyako was not perfect enough, she is a huge Star Wars fan!

Very enjoyable to witness the debut of your LOVEBITES experience. Besides your acknowledgment of "The Golden Touch" Miyako's piano skills, I appreciate your immediate recognition of "Little Big Engine" drummer Haruna. Her precision relentless dbl-kick work plus 'melodic' use of quick-decay 'china', splash & bell cymbals & drums through a plethora of fills/transitions that shape the foundation of these songs is unique in my 'drummer' experience over 60 years! Louie Bellson never dreamed the like!
A 'feature' of LOVEBITES is how surprisingly unique each song is, different from the others, and their arrangements, modulations, breaks, break-downs, prog elements, and all those fascinating transitions with Haruna 'driving' the whole musical structure, in detail!
Every song has a solo by each guitarist and only a few out of 50 lack a harmony-duet, though all contain many harmonized 'rhythm' parts (tremolo-picked palm-muted arpeggiated chords).
Another aspect you noticed is "The One & Only Voice" Asami's "ballad" vocal styling over the hyper-guitars & drumming. The pace of the actual chord-changes support the vocal melody (as does Haruna's cymbal work, even while dbl-kicks are locked with "Natural Born Head Banger" Miho's hyper-bass-thumping). "Crazy Shredder" Midori & Miyako devote hours upon hours to their guitar parts before and during full band rehearsals. Each writes their own individual solo & collaborate on the duets.
That they can perform like this for 2 hours is a testament to their fitness & training. Last song at least as demanding as their most challenging, and no visible fatigue or sloppiness EVER in any performance.
All songs, including all solos, performed-as-written (no improv), note-for-note & beat-for-beat, and Haruna's 'drum arrangements' I do think are the most complex to remember, as you will see. Her timing on 'bell' use is becoming legendary, a 'trademark', as are the star-cymbals she 'adopted' before LOVEBITES.
    (btw, I am a drummer/guitarist.)
I hope you find time to enjoy more LOVEBITES. I have said that their lyrics take them from 'a great band' to 'a meaningful experience' which you might have gotten a 'taste' of with "Swan Song".
imo, humanity needs encouragement to self-empowerment, perseverance, integrity, dignity, personal-responsibility & unity-in-love, and that is LOVEBITES consistent 'theme', though often prefaced with honesty about the harsh-truths, pit-falls & challenges of life-on-Earth.
Every song is 'worthy' but it will take watching/listening (with headphones) to at least a few songs in a row from a LIVE performance to really BEGIN to comprehend, not only their skill, but their talent in 'telling a story' with their songs. Also, to expand on your LOVEBITES experience most with just 2 songs, segued in performances, are as others have suggested, "Edge Of The World > We The United" begins as piano/vocal ballad where they lyrically ask meaningful questions & express their values, transitions galore through many genre, finding their way to offer encouragement & guidance. Both songs have [cc] lyrics and last little clip is end of show appreciation to audience & group-bow, a tradition. total time 13 min: th-cam.com/video/UZjxMjBop7w/w-d-xo.html

To be honest, the full encore playlist, starting with a Miyako-penned recorded instrumental "The Awakening > The Hammer Of Wrath" (Miho's thrash with amazing transitions!) segue to "Edge..." really explores much of their genre-spread, (only omitting the likes of Heavy-Slow-Swagger, Pop-Prog-Metal & Party-Rock.), but THRASH mixed with Power-Metal is a 'strong-suit'...

Miyako has been playing piano since age 2/3, picked up the guitar at age 19/20. All of them have basic notions of piano, but Miyako is on another level as you can see here!
They play many styles from ballads to speed metal and all in between, they are phenomenal musicians and big fans of old school metal, Maiden, JP, Metallica, Slayer, etc.
ASAMI - Vocals, MIHO - Bass (founder and leader, no longer in the band), HARUNA - Drums (founder), Miyako - Guitar, keys, Midori - Guitar.
Miho and Haruna were together in a previous band and decided to form LOVEBITES! They wanted an old school metal band that sings in English!

Lovebites is the best metal band out there today. You should check out more.. I can suggest the live shows for Thunder Vengeance, Break The Wall, Set The World On Fire, and Edge Of The World (with subtitles). You’ll love them! 🎶

You want suggestions for more treasures? Do you know Unleash the Archers - Awakening? Another highly talented and fast playing band. Or yet unknown but totally worth to check out? Fury - Burnout. Enjoy

In background you can hear prerecorded track from Miyako (piano player): Ocean, another Chopin etude. She begun on piano 30 years ago and 14 years ago on guitar with the guitar 's manual for dummies!

Swansong is Miyako’s masterpiece. But the whole band is so ridiculously talented. Vocalist Asami plays piano (though to what degree I’m unsure) and she composed the song “A Frozen Serenade”. All the band members are gifted, and can read and write music, with a great depth of understanding. You didn’t get chance to see the other twin lead guitarist, Midori, in action. You get a snippet here, but she’s a match for Miyako on guitar…in fact Miyako defers to Midori, at least she did in 2017, I think she’s her equal now. If you like Swansong because it’s different, you’ll love “A Frozen Serenade”. th-cam.com/video/Ae8pQVu-RN8/w-d-xo.html

Most world renowned guitarist especially from the Jazz, fusion, prog initially learn guitar the DIY fashion and later in their life enroll into school or colleges, such as Berklee, GIT and so forth. These musicians acknowledge primarily that fundamentals; music theory, reading and writing as a sound foundation for compositions as well as facilitate the ease for being session musicians. But Miyako goes through the reverse. With a very commanding knowledge and application of the theoretical aspects and what more a proficient classical pianist, classroom sessions were already equipped into her, so what was required is a DIY mode of learning guitar. and thus we witness the result of her toil at these present times.
Miyako is a very good guitarist, having a huge advantage of an impeccable control of time signature dynamics, which most fiery and flying finger guitar players do not possess. However, my thoughts are that Lovebites is Miyako's transition into the realm where she challenges her composing skills with the realization that she has a band of outstanding proficient accomplished musicians that she can relate easily in musical terms. Despite being young, she is smart to explore into the domain of musical maturity where her personal musical strength lies. Kudos to Miyako for being a composer first and a musician second.

The original song doesn't have a Chopin intro. It's just a bit they put into the show prior to the song because it's in part inspired by his work.

Great analysis and awesome review! Instantly subbed. I hope you to keep reacting to Lovebites because I only watch Lovebites and Wagakki Band in rock/metal genre on TH-cam.
You might've noticed that Revolutionary etude and Swan Song has specific meanings as a suite. It starts with Chopin piano solo and ends with Chopin Ocean Etude like piano solo. These two pieces also share the same theme. As you know, Revolutionary Etude is said to be written by Chopin in his desperation and anger for the defeated revolution against Russian autocratic rule. Swan Song is about death of heroes, dedication and sacrifice, honor and glory. The hero can be the Polish cadets, Ukrainian soldiers, fire fighters or policeman in your town, or even you as a mother or a father.
The pianist/guitarist Miyako has been playing piano for tree decades as you guessed. She started piano at her 3 and started teaching her self guitar at her 18. She really is a genuine prodigy.
Haruna the drummer and Miho the bassist/band founder/ leader (who left the band last year regretfully) have played solo only once in one of three cover songs. They are so stoic to play their role in the band. They strictly stick to each other keeping rhythm to support the whole sound and soloists as the basement of the band. They are the heart and the backbone of the band.
Asami the singer used to be an R&B/Jazz singer as you guessed. She had never heard metal, neither knew anything about metal before she joined Lovebites through an audition. Lovebites wanted some special color in their band just like their white and gold costume with high heels. She is also a trained ballerina as well.
The piano back track is supposed to be done by Miyako as you guessed. I suggest Epilogue th-cam.com/video/JIAJYBuuKGM/w-d-xo.html for your next reaction to Lovebites. It is a soulful slow ballad with great weeping bluesy guitar solos of the guitar duo. Midori the blond speed demon guitarist's band nickname is "Crazy Shredder" but you'll know she is not just a mere shredder but an emotional guitarist. This song will grab and shake your soul and shred it. My another suggestion is a most beautiful progressive metal with surprises, A Frozen Serenade th-cam.com/video/Ae8pQVu-RN8/w-d-xo.html. I hope you enjoy your great Odyssey here. Bon voyage!!
