    Ok, I’m 94% sure nobody noticed this and 97% sure nobody cares but Hop starts out with a wooloo. He has the wooloo who evolves into a dubwool. After getting beaten and mocked by Bede hop boxes the dubwool in favor of another “more viable” Pokémon (I think it’s a sandiconda) and after his inferiority complex arc,he brings back dubwool. It’s little things like that that make me smile!

      I noticed this, I was confused at first as to why he didn’t have Dubwool wasn’t on his team. I figured that he took him out, since he was talking about having a “new strategy”. It was sort of nice seeing it again towards the end of the story.

    I very much appreciate how level-headed and unbiased this review was! You addressed the negatives without fixating on them, and talked about your positives without exaggerating them. I haven’t bought the games, because they don’t look to deliver on what I consider important to Pokémon, but I am glad that you had fun with them, and hope others who bought it do to.

      That's true but you have to keep in mind that everybody has a different approacht to pokemon. I for my part have to admit that I didn't realy connect to the game. Don't get me wrong the game had some magical moments, however, the design and story flaws kinda killed it for me.

I kinda have a personal approach to Pokemon since it helped me through some really crappy times and now as a 14 year old, it’s helping me get through my anxiety and autism.
      Conclusion, if you don’t like the game, fair enough. Just don’t poop on people like me and others who enjoy the games and Pokemon as a whole.

    btw, Wingull is actually supposed to fly that way! In most (if not all) of its Dex entries, they state that Wingull glides and rides on updrafts. It also has trouble flapping its wings during flight. The games simply just following what Wingull would actually do if it was in the sky. But I do think it would have been better to see it flying higher instead of so near to the ground. I hope this cleared any confusion about why Wingull is animated that way :)

    • @OfficialPikadex

      I know why it doesn't flap its wings, but that's not the real issue. It's able to turn on a single point which honestly looks pretty bad. There's also high-flying Wingull in the Wild Area, which alongside being able to turn the same way, essentially levitates on a straight vertical line when it goes back up, which looks pretty bad when its wings aren't moving at all.

    I like Ron's reviews. He cares about a lot of the things I care about.
    After playing Pokemon Shield I realised *why* I play pokemon. Discovery. I love exploring and that field was laking in Shield. The routes were short and sometimes uninspired. The trainers were too little of and the npc's all said the same thing over and over.
    Hated how the towns were so small even though they were made to look big. It was fine in previous games, but not on the switch.
    I like pokemon camp. Playing with pokemon has always been fun (but yes do miss the ability to pet them).
    The 'main' story was bad: I love the villain plot normally.
    The music was amazing. The graphics didn't bother me. Only the bad pop-in did.

Combine that with the fact that gamefreak lied about their reasons for the cuts and I'm just flat out resentful towards Gamefreak and am going to continue my boycot of all of their products going forward unless they go back to the old standard of a full gameplay experience with all the features the previous mainline games had and not a dressed down excuse for a game that'll turn into a "live service" model as they seem to be trying to enforce right now. They can firmly sod off. :)

    • @WunderwaffePrime
      @WunderwaffePrime 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      i think individual level ups could be executed well in pokemon if they took the time though. lots of players play through the game with equal teams so they can combat multiple different types of pokemon, and if trainer's pokemon throughout routes are equally balanced so that multiple pokemon types are required to beat them, swapping in and out, then most pokemon will get equal amounts of use which should cause your team to be a similar level by the time you reach a lot of key battles in the game.

    • @UiloorDr
      @UiloorDr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Team level ups are great if you don't want to grind. Single level ups are great for playing with every part of your team. That's why I prefer the option to turn EXP Share on and off to my whim, so you can have the best of both worlds while making the game easier/more challenging.
      Especially since Pokémon has a hard time balancing the routes for your team's level.
      X and Y were, level-wise, atrociously balanced, often making your entire team five to ten levels higher than gym leaders if you never turned off EXP share. Sword/Shield was a bit better balance-wise, but still I was overleveled for most of the game despite me running from most encounters I already caught and never using EXP candies (great addition btw), making the game FAR too easy for me. Only Leon and Hop's final battle gave me trouble, and that's because I downright refused to earn experience during that time.
      Also, I found out I NEVER used my starter between level 16 and 35. Thanks to EXP-share and the fact he was the highest leveled Pokémon I never wanted to use him. And that's kinda sad.

    I can honestly say after 23 years of playing Pokemon, these are my favourites. Wild Pokemon roaming the overworld, the wild area and raids, the fact that the Pokemon league was treated as an actual tournament rather than just an "elite 4" made the games feel more alive and bigger in scope. Every Pokemon was interesting that was added to the games and the soundtrack was amazing.
    They're not perfect and you can tell they have a lot to learn, being a small team who have developed almost exclusively for handhelds trying their hand at a console game isn't going to be a smooth transition but this is a great start.

      You started playing in 1996? I started in 2002 although played 1 game from each pair & the 3rd versions. Sword & Shield were my biggest disappointments for the series, the actual choices made for the region felt more like GameFreak trolling us than actually trying to make a good UK based region. These games feel almost like they didn't even study British Culture & got most of their material from stereotypes. I mean how the heck did Pokemon that are loved & feel like Pokemon you would encounter in the UK get left out in favor of some of the most hated species out there?
      Dynamaxing really shouldn't have replaced Mega Evolution as Kaiju have absolutely nothing to do with the UK's Culture, while Mega Evos were introduced in the French based region & England has a long sibling like history with France. The UK had so much potential for a region that went completely wasted to focus on only a few aspects of its culture. We could have gotten the chance to battle Diantha seeing as she's partly based on a Princess from Wales. We could have gotten representation for the Knights of the Round Table in the form of Legendary Pokemon.
      There were many great works of fiction to come from the UK, from the long running Doctor Who to series such as Harry Potter. Also the written works of greats like HG Wells & others. We didn't even get an Actor Trainer Class to represent the many great British Actors from the Shakespeare plays to films themselves. We could have gotten another Pokestar Studios. You can tell GameFreak has no real ambition for the series & it shows. GameFreak lied repeatedly & these games feel more like 3DS games.

    "A lot of the flaws with the games have been with the series so I am used to them."
    Literally the only quote that I didn't agree with here but here's my take. We shouldn't HAVE to get used to them. Not saying the game needs to be the best pokemon game ever made, I'm saying that these games with the newer hardware should also fix most of the issues I have with the series like the story and the difficulty. Each game should improve upon the last, and it should be improving long standing problems. These games did that very minimally in comparison to other games, like Sun and Moon removing HMs and Black and White making TMs reusable. These games have flaws and they should be criticized for it as much, or even more than, past entries because this is a $60 2019 Switch game. Even if its judged as a pokemon game, some of the ones from over a decade ago, both from the main series and spin offs have much higher quality, when they really shouldn't. The games, like I said should be getting better, not changing incrementally.
    But that's my take, and I agree with almost everything else you said.

I think it’s really unfortunate that all of these changes get overshadowed by things most fans might consider minor flaws - but naturally I understand it must be heartbreaking if the natdex is what makes the essence of Pokémon for you. I think we should show GameFreak how much we liked all of the new additions and improvements now, because they definitely heard the criticism enough already - either they decide to act upon that or they stay stubborn. However, hopefully the next games will expand upon both of these areas, not just one.

    • @alexpotts6520
      @alexpotts6520 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thing is, there are bigger problems than the national dex; away from that, this game has by far the biggest *regional* dex ever, and that more than makes up for it as far as I'm concerned.
      My primary issue is that the game feels clearly rushed. Routes and towns are somewhat sparse and linear, there isn't a whole lot to do in them. The game is poorly paced; there's barely anything to do between gyms five to eight except beat the gyms, and then a whole other plot kicks off when you get to Wyndon. Tied to this, the way the villain switch was handled was appalling (Team Yell aren't ever made remotely villainous; Macro Cosmos had no personality and because they weren't built up there was no satisfying payoff from beating them). The game is missing a dungeon or two: no Victory Road, and so disappointing that the Energy Plant was just one room.
      Shame because I agree with Truegreen that most of the things that are good about this game, are *really* good. If GameFreak had been given an extra six months this could have been the best game in the Pokemon franchise and more than worthy of making the jump to a home console. As it is... the most accurate word is disappointing. A missed opportunity. What might have been.

    A really fair review. It’s like you said, different people value different things in Pokémon. I like the game less than you because I think the negatives outweigh the positives, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t think the positives exist. For example, I’ve always transferred my favorite Pokémon to the most updated game, and it really really sucks that they’re sitting on my 3DS without a shot of coming to Galar, but if it doesn’t matter to you, that’s fine too.
    I’m also really happy you brought up the small size of Galar and lack of interesting cities/routes. It may be the most major issue IMO and I don’t see enough people talking about it. Compare the size of Galar to Sinnoh or Unova in terms of content. Unfortunately I hard disagree on the story, I thought Hoenn and Sinnoh had clearly better ones and that Rose in particular was a very weak antagonist. Post game was also disappointing, as it’s the only Pokémon game in quite some time to have no new area in the post game.
    As a side note, while I don’t think the easiness was the biggest of the games problems (although it’s up there), I still wanted a harder experience so I replayed it on a different switch account with an all-Grass team. It was still pretty easy, but I’ve seen a lot of people talking about 10-Pokémon teams, maybe I’ll try that next.

    Honestly, I've played pokemon games so many times that the story mode aspect of it is kinda boring if it isn't a nuzlocke run. The main reason I looked forward to this pokemon game was because it was gonna be the first time my party members were gonna get a new polish in graphics and animation. That's why the dex cut, and disappointing animation recycle was a deal breaker. I can no longer use my favorite pokemon mega Gardevoir against my friend/rivals favorite pokemon scizor. And with no new emersive animations to incentivize giving up pokemon we've carried since OrAs, we have to stick to sun and moon. I'm sure the game would be entertaining for one run, but with Gamefreak emphasizing their disinterest in post game, not even hoping for the next game to be better feels realistic to me anymore.

I appreciate the effort you put into not dismissing people who are disappointed with these games, but I completely agree with the whole part about how the issues that other people are annoyed with don’t affect everyone. That’s exactly how I feel, since people are always trying to shame those of us who enjoyed the game by pointing out flaws that didn’t really change the way I perceived the game as a whole.
    Thanks for this review Ron. I can tell you worked hard on it!

    While I won't go and say your fun is misplaced, I have a rather big gripe with your review. Its entire point is that you rate it not as a video game, but simply a 'pokémon game'... But in my humble opinion, why would Pokémon get any preferential treatment? Why should we ignore the flaws and weaknesses simply because it's pokémon? Is it really in the right to ignore the fact the games have not progressed much?
    I'd argue the opposite, Pokémon being the biggest media franchise of all time - and still one of the biggest video games (X&Y made like 20 million dollar iirc) - I think we should hold the franchise in a higher regard and expect more than just 'a Pokémon game'.
    I'm sorry, but - I genuinely cannot agree. It's fine if you enjoy it, but to put your head in the sand simply because it's Pokémon does a disservice to the franchise. The higher ups are forcing yearly releases - and unlike other companies in Nintendo enforce harsh crunch hours and keep strict oversight on everyone. (Even Masuda & Ohmori are kept heavily in check by people from TPC in their interviews - there are literally people off-screen who judge everything they do and say.)

      This is a Pokemon channel. I don't regularly play other video games other than Pokemon. (and a couple of Mario and Zelda games, which I play for a completely different reason than Pokemon) It's not preferential treatment. Just simply a fact that I personally can't compare Pokemon with any other franchise. I never said that was the correct way to review em. Nothing wrong with explicitly saying that in the beginning of the review so you know how I play these games and how I'm rating them. And nothing is being ignored. But some people have the disposition to not let flaws damage their experience. Some people are the opposite. Each person brings their own disposition to their review.

      Agree to disagree then. I personally have played Pokémon more than any other thing myself too and hold the franchise very near and dear to my hearts. But when I see Gen 8, I simply see a corporation pushing a game simply for money, letting the other workers suffer. And even then there are some questionable choices - EXP share being non-optional (when the ability to turn it off still exists in the code, but we cannot access it for some reason) which if you like me, want to turn on and off at your own leisure to avoid overleveling is pretty big. Or the odd decision to have multiple models for pokémon instead of 1 model and different textures. As such we have 66 models of Alcremie in the game including its shiny variants.
      As I stated, it's fine if you like them. But from an ethical standpoint - I do not support the TPC milking the franchise at the cost of its workers.

Also it would be super embarrassing if someone walked by and heard the cartoony anime voice that they would prob have. You really touched on all the stuff I love about this game and issues I've had with people who dislike it. The only other issue I had was I was super overleveled the whole game but I don't run from wild battles so that was more on my play style than anything else. I think more people should watch how other people play when making reviews because seeing how differently others enjoy the game really changed my perspective on things I originally saw as problems. Long time fans complain about the hand holding but watching people who have never played a pokemon game, or haven't had as much experience with them I could see how helpful it was for them. (It's kind of funny people complain about the catching tutorial because it will automatically skip if you have already caught a pokemon before that point in SWSH which I think is a pretty clever touch!) I was shocked when my brother said he only used the pokemon camp feature twice the whole game when that's a feature I used on nearly every route at least twice. Its a similar feeling to watching others play Untitled Goose Game where people solve the puzzles in ways I had never considered in my own personal playthrough!

      @Hiccupanda 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lag, from what I’ve experienced, only happens when you’re connected to the internet because the game is trying to keep up with rendering multiple other players and the actions they perform. However, with how horrible the Y-comm is right now and the fact it’s nearly impossible to meet up with your friends in the wild area and go camping, that’s really no excuse. I don’t, however, really feel it was that barren, considering it’s the “wild” area and there’s Pokemon around every corner.

    Despite a little bit pissed about the National Dex cut because my favorite Pokemon, Zangoose did not make it through the cut. But hey, I really love this game. In my opinion, the story and characters are the most important things in any RPG. The story itself is really one of the best compare to any other Pokémon game since gen 5. Some character like Bede and Hop have become the top tier character in my opinion along with N. And I like that your character is not just some random kid that catch the legendary and beat the champion, you have some backstory to logically to do all of that. Just like gen 5 protagonist, you are exactly someone that has been acknowledge by some character unlike any other protagonist. Since N, there is no any other character that catch a legendary other than Hop, and that make Hop is a really special rival. The champion too, unlike any others, he is exactly well known and such a celebrity. Then Chairman Rose, I think he is one of the best antagonist ever with Giovanni and Ghetsis. Gordie and Piers ended up being part of my top 3 gym leader after Drayden. Finally the new Pokémon, I love a lot of them. Eiscue, Cramorant, Orbeetle, Runerigus, Sirfetch'd and Toxtricity already attached to me. I hope Game Freak will make a sequel to this game. They can make a better story, some great new Pokémon and top notch character, expand the region more and finally fix the National Dex issue. Overall, this game become my second favorite Pokémon game after B2W2.

    To be honest I really do missed the GTS (Global Trade System) because they're a lot easier to trade than the link trade with someone who are only interest in shiny Pokemon, plus using GTS be able to show Pokemon that you want trade with and show their Pokeball so you can be able to have the rare Pokeball like Lure, Level, Love, Moon, Heavy, Safari, Friendship and Dream balls.But unfortunely It's now on this new Pokemoon game programme Pokemon Home and I don't own it as it cost alot to keep and to be honest I wouldn't know how to used it to transfer on Nintendo Switch.

    I just now played the game and one thing I noticed related to the permanent exp share is that, even if it does make the game "easier" by making it so you don't have to farm as much, you never really feel overleveled even playing in a grindy way. I got to the first gym at level 20 thinking i was way overleveled and to my surprise I was actually in the right range. Compared to other games, I never really felt that I had to be careful about how much fighting I did to avoid gaining too many levels before the next gym. Even the champion cup had a pretty nice surprise with the jump from level 55 to level 60-65 pokemon.
    Definitely agree with all of the review and appreciate that it's a review of what the game is meant to be, and not a review of what the game isn't. Why is it every remake except HGSS is of less quality than the remake pair that came before? I fear whatever comes next whether it is Let's Go 2 Johto or Gen 5 Remakes.
      Let's face it there's a 65% probability that whatever gets remade next will be even worse than BDSP, as impossible as that sounds. Black & White remakes are already probably doomed to be much worse than their original games when they happen. The Gen 5 Fanbase should be in complete dread right about now because their beloved games will likely get remade before this decade ends.
      Gen 5 was an anomaly that unbalanced the Pokemon Series & doomed it down a path where the series quality would keep decreasing. The sheer weight of Gen 5's maassiveness combined with the switch to 3D would essentially start the series downsizing. The 3 Year gap between generations that returned after Generation 5 only would further make the games feel rushed as the 3D Games required more time to make.

    This was a really great video. I really loved the Gym Leaders, the Gym Challenge and exploring the Galar region. I think that you made a good point in regards to the cities. I didn't really notice it because they still feel so vast and gorgeous even with the few amount of people and closed off areas. I don't think that the plot was messy per say, but I do think that the buildup to Chairman Rose being the villain was too subtle or too small. There are problems at the power plant and wild Pokemon Dynamaxing before he's revealed as the big threat, but there isn't a more prominent growing threat during your journey. Even Sun/Moon had the possibility of Ultra Beasts showing up before Lusamine was revealed as the true villain. The focus is primarily on the Gym Challenge this time around, along with the mystery of the Galar legions, and the conflicts are more character driven like with Hop and Bede's character arcs. I don't think that's a bad thing, especially when I love so many of the characters introduced in the games, but it kind of leads to a lack of more proper buildup to the second Darkest Day. I actually thought that the two brothers were more random than Chairman Rose's villain turn, but the post storyline quest did feel like the most natural extension of the main storyline out of all of the games thus far. I absolutely adore Hop and his character development was terrific. He's easily one of my favorite rivals. Sonia's character arc was also pretty solid and I grew to like her a lot more than I initially expected.
    I also think that describing them as the most fun and entertaining Pokemon games is really fitting. I've played Pokemon since Silver and I wanted to replay Sword right after I finished it. I usually don't get that kind of reaction after finishing the main storyline, or at least not as intensely as I did with this game. I actually want them to do another game set in Galar before doing any remakes, even though remakes would probably be easier to manage, just because I want to explore Galar more and make new teams. I prefer sticking with one team as early as possible, although I might raise a few more Pokemon that I wanted to try out sooner rather than later. There are valid complaints about the games and I have my fair share of problems with them too, but darn it these games are extremely fun and at the end of the day, that's exactly what I want from my video games.

      Yeah. They still feel kinda rushed to me, but honestly, they have a small deadline of an year, they will sadly have to cut corners. I think they should give us a full fledged game with the National Dex, and good features. And they should also take their time to do that. I agree with a lot of criticism, but that doesn't mean I support people who spread toxicity and rudeness in the fandom. I don't respect anyone who doesn't respect the developers and other people involved in the games. If you're going to criticise the games, do it respectfully. Don't be a jerk to Masuda or anyone at GF. That's why I hate DistantKingdom. He is really toxic and his fanbase is really rude and they are just plain jerks. If you're criticising the games, be unbiased, fair, and most importantly, respectful.

      @@piyushmenon4987 I think that there are good features in these games already. They don't feel that rushed or incomplete to me, but I also couldn't care less about the National Dex issue. I understand why people are upset about it and not being able to see some of my favorite Pokemon in the games is disappointing, but the toxic behavior from so many fans made me care less about the National Dex. Ideally, I agree that they should have more time to develop the games so that everyone can be happy, but they were in a tight spot with these games in terms of a time crunch. Taking more time to develop them just wasn't an option and as much as people say that they would have preferred a delay, I'm positive plenty of people would have thrown a fit over not getting a new generation on the Switch until next year instead.

That's their subjective opinion, while I'm more of a guy who likes to focus on being objective. But yeah, however good or bad the games might be in their opinion, they have no right to be toxic to anyone or harass GF or Masuda. I highly discourage rude and toxic behaviour and recommend being polite, respectful, fair and civil. I've been called a shill when I was talking about the positive points of the games, and I've also been harassed a lot online. I understand some people wouldn't like the game delayed. And, I'd say sometimes, you can't please everyone in life. GameFreak will have to make controversial decisions. I don't think many people will stick around after Sword and Shield. I'll still stick around to see and try the upcoming games.

      @@piyushmenon4987 A 9/10 rating doesn't seem too biased to me, but reviews and opinions are subjective by nature anyway. No one should be harassed or threatened over these games, especially GF and Masuda. Despite the backlash, I'm not sure if that many people will avoid future games. Sword/Shield sold like hotcakes despite months of backlash over the decision and most of the reviews I've seen/watched have been as whole pretty positive. I don't think that the backlash comes from a minority group of fans, but I don't think that the backlash is necessarily an accurate representation of how the fanbase in general feels about the National Dex either.

    Ahem, pushing my bi-curiosity aside, I really connected with your opinions on this game. I think the story should've been executed a bit better with the Rose stuff, but the Gym Challenge is the most compelling it's ever been. You FEEL that journey. Leon is the embodiment of success, so much so that his theme is just the Hall of Fame, because everyone expects him to win. He's the unbeatable champion, after all. Also, making the monarchy the final villain of the UK Pokémon games was pretty genius and very funny.

It made the journey feel special, which is the whole goal of Pokemon. Slasher. Yeah. The rivals in Gen. 3 is your male/female protagonist depending on who you play as. They also have an starter Pokemon that has the advantage against your own starter Pokemon. But the biggest problem was that they had an very little development that it didn't bother to fully evolved all the way to it's final form. It only stops at it's middle form & nothimg more. And the worst part about it is that it's own Pokemon team isn't that built up really well either. For example; if you have Torchic as your starter Pokemon, it'll have an weakling Slugma that hasn't evolved into an Magcargo yet. That's how bad they are.
      Thankfully, they were improved in the remake. They were alot better in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire than what they were in Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald.

    My one complaint about the Wild Area: in postgame all the wild Pokemon are level 60. Which sucks if you genuinely enjoy catching Pokemon at lower levels and leveling them up. Catching an Oddish or a Mudbray at level 60 makes it feel like you missed out on part of its growth & development.

    I thought this game was pretty good
    It was alright, and every time i re-played it, i found something new!
    But with the whole "darkest day" stuff, and the rather easy difficulty, I felt this as more of a fan-game than an actual pokemon game
    Overall I enjoyed my time with it, it's the first game that got me into competitive with all of it's quality of life features
    But I feel that the game could be alot more polished with the animations, textures etc.
    I enjoy this game 7/10

    Yeah, I think I agree. I definitely enjoyed this game, though I know many did not. But I feel like this game was at the very least in the middle of other games; while it was not the best, it is not the worst either. For me, I felt the biggest problem was how easy it was. I switched out my party multiple times (I didn’t have a rotating party of 10 like you but I just replaced them) and even then I tended to be overleveled really easily-which is one of the problems of a game being too easy. For example, Leon was the hardest challenge I had in the game’s story. However, he only KO’d one of my Pokémon. No other trainer did that. I didn’t even use items. Not as much of a letdown as X and Y’s champion, but still a let down.
    I started playing HG/SS and I feel like that game gave a challenge, though I feel like the levels were a bit off (at the Elite 4, I was level 39ish and while many elite 4 is 40ish, Lance is 50 and having a 10 level difference will obviously be more difficult, especially if they’re all dragons). I feel a better balance could be struck if they made you always land 5 levels below opponents if you don’t use the EXP Share All and land at (or slightly above) opponent levels if you use the EXP Share All. I wasn’t that much of turning off EXP Share All at first, but seeing how easy recent games are with it on, it’s really... hitting more. I think that’s why I enjoy older (Gen 5 and below) Pokémon games more; because they were more of a challenge.
