I’m trying to knit a sock for the first time, I couldn’t work out how to do a SSK , I’d never heard of it,,I used knit two together,,only needed the first few minutes of your wonderful video and now I know how to do it and I also understand the “physiology “ behind it,,thanks so much . I’ve been so very frustrated and your video is a gift from Mother Nature…clear concise, easy to see and follow,, no annoying music, thanks thanks so very much. Thank you Suzanne for this sharing of your knowledge. I feel you give me tools to improve my kneeting and that is so great. In France, the S1 k1 psso is called "surjet" and we don't ear about ssk. I started knitting ssk when I start using English patterns. Differences beetween french and american or north Europe knitting are very interesting.

I actually DO this even long before I saw it in youtube or anywhere else in the internet. I don't really hate doing SSK but the way the SSK decreases kinda produces a zigzag knit line. Doing it at the tips of the needles really makes a huge difference.
I do the one at 4:55 where the 2nd st is twisted - it makes it smaller - less 'fluffy'. I think I learned that here when I watched a long time ago. Thank you Suzanne!

Very interesting video Suzanne. Yes, I remember when I was really young, these stitches used to be, S1, K1, PSSO, and now, as you say it has been changed to SSK. I can't be bothered with SSK, I just K2tog tbl, its quicker and looks almost the same. I use Hiya Hiya sharps too, and just love them! What a difference they make ( especially with the K2tog tbl, lol).
Thanks for sharing! Just for the heck of it, make a swatch and compare the SSK with the k2tog tbl and see what you think. Pull the fabric from side to side and see if you notice a difference.

Great video and very clear explanation. I had a VERY LONG time professional knitter teach me to just slip my needle behind the stitches as if to purl, and then knit the two together from behind.

The problem with decreasing in that manner is that the resulting knit stitch on top is twisted. Try slipping 1 st as if to purl, then put it back on the left needle. Now proceed as you describe. Doesn't that look better?
I love lace tips for the reason that I can get into a stitch easier. Otherwise it’s like ‘knitting with dowels’. Will have to try your brand, so far I’ve been addicted to Addi brand.

Hi Suzanne, I just discovered your videos and have been watching, enjoying and learning from them. I found and easier way of doing ssk’s. I was knitting a sweater by a designer (can’t remember her name) and she knits ssk’s without slipping them. She puts her needle on the first stitch as if to knit then through the back loop of the second stitch then knits them together. I found this to be easier to knit ssk’s.

Thank you so much I am going back to what I had been doing for 64 years and then had a pattern tell me to SSK so I googled it and I have been using it on my 2.5 for sock knitting and I do use the tips so clever me for that one. But then when I get to the end of that toe I am told to knit 2 together which just doesn’t match the SSK on the right hand side how can I make it look similar. Thank you 🙏
For sock toes, usually the stitches are divided in half, half for the top of the foot and half for the bottom. You work across the top as - k1, ssk, knit until 3 sts remain, k2tog k1. Then you repeat that on the bottom. Does this answer your question?

Very clear and helpful thanx ... I have a full set of hiya interchangeable but I find the cord kinks a lot especially at the very end of the needles where they join the tips ... I tried soaking in hot water, I even ironed them, only getting a little unkinked. I bought the softer sock cables but just not crazy about the cables but love the tips. Regarding this I always have a hard time getting toe increases and decreases to look symmetrical so I will try to be mindful of what you have pointed out.

I very much appreciate that you explain **why** not just how. Now that I know that the SSK untwists the yarn, I'm wondering why the stitches aren't both slipped purl wise. Wouldn't that solve the problem of fluffy stitches?
It would make a twisted stitch and would not look good. In order for the top stitch to remain untwisted, you have to change the stitch orientation before working it. In other words, slip as if to knit.

I look forward to see it too. Even though I have been knitting since I was 5 ( must have learnt at my Montessori School in Ymuiden North Holland Nederland. Now in Eltham Victoria Australia 🇦🇺 for 62 years. I also learnt to crochet at a very young age and beautiful embroidery swatches, I lost it by using it as a pot plant cloth not realising that the terracotta saucer would destroy that gorgeous sampler. A lesson learnt but a very sad one. Again thank you for your help I will go through all your podcasts so I can send beginners to your TH-cam tutorials. Short but Sweet!

Why then slip the first stitch as if to knit? What if you slipped it as if to purl, wouldn’t that solve the untwisted stitch? I’ll have to experiment. Also would SSK or K2tog be a preferred method rather than a Inv-L or Inv-R? Thank you.

I'm puzzled by the description (around 1:00) of the 'untwisted' stitch being left 'fluffy' tho, as when it is then ktbl, it sits the same way as a normal knit stitch. Does the action of slipping it knitwise encourage it to remain untwisted even after a ktbl? Or is this just the effect of pulling it about? Sorry if I missed something obvious.
changing the stitch mount actually releases a little of the twist and then knitting through the back loop secures that untwist action. It results in that fragment of the yarn being fatter than the rest and therefore making the SSK look bigger.

So what does a left handed person do differently with knit instructions such as these? (I'm accustomed to switching crochet in my head and occasionally having to rewrite portions of patterns to make it work but I'm new to knit)
If you are a knitter who knits the stitches from the right needle to the left, then you would work a k2tog instead of the SSK. Try it on a swatch first.
Thank you Suzanne. I follow several knit designers, including you, so that I have multiple sources of tutorials. I've been knitting for year, but I still have tension issues. I do tend to knit on the barrel of the needle and my stitches are loose. Would keeping my stitches on the tips when I work them help me?

I am new to knitting crocheter background and your videos are so detailed and giving u explanation of logic behind things so I am really amazed :) thnx for taking time to teach many of us. is it real that slip by default purlwise unless mentioned in decrease here that are knitwise.
Yes, the default is purlwise unless making a decease, or if the designer explicitly requires it.
I was taught by a lefty so I knit continental so my stitches on the knitting side are already untwisted so my ssk=knit 2together but for my k2together so not to have to twist the two stitches on the left and then knit them together instead I come from the front into the 2nd& then the1st stitches on the left needle and then just knit them together- no holes and no repositioning stitches
Sounds like you might be a combination knitter. Try searching combination knitting and see if it matches your style.

I am starting a scarf with a lot of SSK and knit two together. If slip one, knit one and pass slip stitch over is the same, can I just substitute? So glad to see the details in your video!

I have had terrible trouble with this stitch and ruined 2 sweaters knitting it as the decrease ssk opens up and there is a laddering effect. I have had to resort to picking up a loop under the stitch to keep it tight which ruins the stitch completely, I will try your alternative methods but untwisting the stitch is the explanation I can see that ….thank you
