While American hip-hop has spent the last two decades dying, being slowly overtaken by the UK (Dave, Stormzy, Meekz, Ghetts, Central Cee, etc. own the game, now), Minneapolis has been doing everything they can to keep the art alive. They're obviously not alone (Marlon Craft proves NY is still alive, the south is still breathing with J, and LA still has Kendrick and Coast Contra), but if American rap can be saved, Rhymesayers deserves a "Rap Medal of Honor.
I'm glad you did a reaction to this group. Slug is one of my favorite MCs. Even on my personal top 5 list. Their music is definitely a vibe. His lyrics are usually very personal and even a little self-degrading. Like MF Doom or Aesop Rock it's best to listen to the song, enjoy the vibe and then on repeat listens dissect the lyrics. However they do have more songs that are much easier to get on a first listen unlike MF Doom and Aesop Rock. Some of those are Sunshine, Fuck you Lucy, and The Best Day.
Atmosphere is an aquired taste. More often than not, can be very meloncholy. I dig this style though. For me, it's deep and poetic, laced with a smooth jazzy beat. Another piece of the puzzle within many facets of hip-hop styles. SLUG is a dope emcee. Keeps it real and keeps it underground.

The next time you get around to underground portion of “Rotating Tuesdays” I’d really recommend “Never Falling Down” by Living Legends. If not, no drama though. Love the channel and keep it going!

When i was a kid and tried my first rhymes i found a lot of atmosphere beats wich i liked, in the mp3 packedges i "found" on the internet. I realy liked them because of there mood. But its the 1st time i hear them rap. Thanks mr boomer to recall childhood memories 😅

i love this song and sample and how slug raps back and forth between two vocal takes on the chorus. first heard this like 20 years ago way before youtube or lyric videos existed. i never attempted to decode the lyrics, i just went along for the ride. kind of weird that even though i'm familiar with drug use and have hung around junkies, i've never even thought about OD'ing being a topic of the song. also the fact that Slug only ever really talks about alcoholism when it comes to drugs, so i never fathomed that take. but then again, lyrical content takes a backseat to the overall sonics for me, either way.

That was what -- a four sentence reaction? Keep at it Sir Boomer. I like the fact that you are sincere. ...... They don't preform "GBF" live, correct? ........ Atmosphere is the TRUTH...... I recall listening to this when it first came on the 'burnt cd' scene in high school. "GBF" and "Scapegoat" were a portal into a world of music that helped me help myself through some difficult years -- and the some more "Sunshine" years. This track in particular became associated with a tragic loss in my life and seemed (seems) to be speaking directly to me.
So cool that you have so much history with them. Reaction channels are: you listen to a song once and then give your immediate reaction. I don't think in-depth analysis is possible with those parameters.

Slug is criminally underrated but this song isn’t one of my favorites. I admit there’s some nostalgia with this song. Played when parties were dying down or when making out. Good old days.
