      I've recently discovered them and I now listen to a few songs frequently. I'm more of a Infected Rain and Jinjer fan. This is something very underrated.

    Those are three magical spells (singing spells/galdr) from very different time periods. It begins and ends with the 2nd Mersberg charm, a loosening spell. Then moves into the Grõgaldr (spells of Groa), a man summons his dead mother from Helheim to cast 10 spells on him. The chorus is spell 25 a washing spell from the Galdrbök. 1st is high German (7-9th century), 2nd is Swedish 17th century/likely from a far earlier source, and the 3rd is Icelandic from a grimoire dating to the 16th century

    The history depicted by Heilung is pre-dating the Viking culture. It's norse culture including germanic and celtic elements.

    Remember, that we all are brothers
    All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind
    We all descend from the one great being
    That was always there
    Before people lived and named it
    Before the first seed sprouted
    Welcome to the Merseburg incantations

    it was a Pagan ritual, in the most simple way i can describe it. a ritual in which a warrior is chosen in this case a shield maiden, gives their life not only knowingly but willingly and happily it was a great honor to be chosen for this particular sacrifice it would bring good fortune and hopefully peace for their lands and death to any enemies that opposed them... Maria Franz in this case towards the end where she had the lady stand up Maria brought her back from death and is now in Valhalla in this case the one doing the ropes is the Shaman and is who chooses the warrior and Maria is the Valkyrie that picks the dead up and carries them away to Valhalla.... this is such an amazing ritual and performance to connect any person with (German, Norwegian, Finnish etc..) back with their heritage every single time I watch these rituals it calms mind body and spirit... I really really want to see this live so badly.

      @@alexandrumihai-dan5484 that's awesome to know, I had heard about romanians doing some of these same rituals akin to their Germanic/Celtic neighbors such as Vlad Tepesh Drakul in Latvia.. it is funny to watch people try and argue and say that Vlad Drakul otherwise AKA (Dracula/Vlad the Impaler) had a castle in Transylvania when history says they don't even have any proof that he was ever in Transylvania little less even that he had a castle there but you will have people try and argue with you that he did when. They got their information from a Dracula movie >.>

    Traust's lyrics are pulled from different incantations: one comes from the Merseburg charms (song of the Idisi - sung by Maria), one comes from Grógaldr (sung by Maria and interjected with a line by Kai and the other men), another comes Galdrabók.
    The song of the Idisi is a spell to free someone from their hardships, or literally, their binds or whatever is keeping them trapped in place:"Eiris sazun idisi, sazun hera duoderSuma hapt heptidun, suma heri lezidunSuma clubodun umbi cuoniouuidiInsprinc haptbandun, invar vigandun!"
    -
    "Once sat the Idisi, they sat here, then thereSome fastened bonds, some impeded an armySome unraveled fettersEscape the bonds, flee the enemy!"
    If you look at a live performance of Traust, this is highlighted by the binding of a young women by Kai and the release of her binds by Maria later on (see: th-cam.com/video/gNZX1TpGzoE/w-d-xo.html). I find it mesmerizing and I know it back to front. It's a great breathing exercise, to sing it, too. There is no pause in the singing, it's like an eb and flow that gently rolls over you. The Idisi are more or less supernatural female figures that can be called upon, to free or sabotage an enemy (army).
    If you look at some of the words, you can see that this old Germanic tongue shares a common ancestral root with English and my own native tongue.
    The next part is from Grógaldr which is a lot more intricate in how it connects to lore and stories from all parts of the Edda, but I too find it to be a healing or a cleansing spell:
    "Þann gel ek þér fyrstan,þann kveða fjölnýtan, þann gól Rindi Rani,at þú of öxl skjótir, því er þér atalt þykkir;sjalfr leið þú sjalfan þik.
    Þann gel ek þér annan, ef þú árna skaltviljalauss á vegum, Urðar lokurhaldi þér öllum megum, er þú á sinnum sér.
    Þann gel ek þér inn þriðja, ef þér þjóðáarfalla at fjörlotum, Horn ok Ruðrsnúisk til heljar meðan, en þverri æ fyr þér.
    Þann gel ek þér inn fjórða, ef þik fjándr standagörvir á galgvegi, hugr þeim hverfitil handa þér, ok snúisk þeim til sátta sefi.
    Þann gel ek þér inn fimmta, ef þér fjöturr verðrborinn at boglimum, leysigaldr læt ekþér fyr legg of kveðinn, ok stökkr þá láss af limum,en af fótum fjöturr."
    -
    "Then first I will chant thee | the charm oft-tried,That Rani taught to Rind;From the shoulder whate'er | mislikes thee shake,For helper thyself shalt thou have.
    Then next I will chant thee, | if needs thou must travel,And wander a purposeless way:The bolts of Urth | shall on every sideBe thy guards on the road thou goest.
    Then third I will chant thee, | if threatening streamsThe danger of death shall bring:Yet to Hel shall turn | both Horn and Ruth,And before thee the waters shall fail.
    Then fourth I will chant thee, | if come thy foesOn the gallows-way against thee:Into thine hands | shall their hearts be given,And peace shall the warriors wish.
    Then fifth I will chant thee, | if fetters perchanceShall bind thy bending limbs:O'er thy thighs do I chant | a loosening-charm,And the lock is burst from the limbs,And the fetters fall from the feet."
    Heilung interjects each stanza with a different bit of the Edda:
    "Fjón þvæ ég af mér fjanda minna rán og reiði ríkra"
    -
    "I wash off the hatred of my enemies and the theft and anger of rich men."
    The genius in the way Heilung composed these lyrics and implemented them in a musical style that entirely befits the old Germanic/Norse age, is that each stanza is a blessing issued by Maria, and the men affirm this blessing by saying - "I have received this blessing and I wash away the mortal sins of men". It is a typical way of how Pagan blessings or incantations work: they are issued by a Völva/healer/seer and the person receiving the blessing, participates in the spell. It is carefully constructed and put together, in a way that our ancestors lived in their time, to the point it becomes its own being.
    It's good to know that these three different parts of lore are invoked from a very large timespan, probably predating the viking age, far into the Icelandic staves and runes.
    Another interesting tidbit is that the Merseburg charms (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merseburg_charms) also return in Hamrer Hippyer, which denotes Odin's healing spell.
    The Futha album version is sublime. The live version is currently accompanied by even more, very talented (and beautiful) female vocals, which makes it all the more impressive. All the soot, the dirt, the pain, the filth is resonated off of your being. The massive drums wallop your gut as your eardrums vibrate at a holy frequency. Truly a healing experience.

    "Anoana" is also a very good track for you to react too. Heilung is such a superb band. saw them a few times live and i was very lucky to be able to witness the healing ritual.
    Explore them vacant, same with Wadruna and other nordic/european/pagan bands.

    I've seen two rituals in London. The ritual here seems to me to be a sacrifice to the Gods (Kai The Shaman tying up the female and 'strangling' her), then Maria coming down as Freya to take the victim to Valhalla to serve as a Valkyrie.

      She portrays a willing sacrifice and that journey all the way to when she rise again after death.
      Not as a victim but by choice

    another of theirs i enjoy is their cover song Nikkal, which is their version of the oldest known song in human history inscribed in cuneiform on clay tablets excavated from the ancient Amorite-Canaanite city of Ugarit. (modern day Syria)

    This isn't an actual "viking" ritual. There is zero historical record indicating as much. It is just a bit of theater. It may have existed as a ritual but we don't know.

    • @TehKillerB
      @TehKillerB 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      It is referred to as a ritual, because that i show the band referes to their performances. Kai is heavily involved in his own spiritual practice. Each song when written has an intent to it and a particular state of mind it is intending to guide you to. The live performances lean into this also, and as you can see it is heavily choreographed and theatrical.
      The band never tries to claim that is an accurate historical representation of anything. In fact, their own self description is "amplified history".
      I was at their most recent Red Rocks performance, and it was INCREDIBLE.

    • @Gwenny_Black
      @Gwenny_Black 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Note entirely true. There have been bog bodies found with the same position, the same rope around the neck and the hands. So there is a truth to the human sacrifice, hence the ritual. It is not "just" a bit of theater. :)

    • @makke4467
      @makke4467 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah its probably not actual ritual but Heilung's performance may actually be inspired by the charm of Merseburg, from which Traust's first lyrics come - the charm is about the ancient norse-goddess Idis freeing the men from their bonds and shackles who were prisoners of battle.

    • @eddieromanov
      @eddieromanov 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think it’s important to note that and also to note that Heilung themselves don’t claim it to be authentic. They call what they do “Amplified History”. It’s a modern interpretation and reconstruction based on what little we actually know.
      In this case, I think this is an attempt at the initiation of a Völva into Seiðr.
