Why goals alone do not work and what’s missing! | Derek Mills | TEDxHolyhead

  • Derek Mills discovered a new idea that everyone in the last century had missed when it comes to goal achievement. He was a failed businessman after 17 years of trying until after a ‘10-second insight’ he started utilising the missing-link to goals success.
This idea changes everything about what we should focus on, both personally and professionally.
Author of The 10-Second Philosophy®, Derek is the coach’s coach and the adviser’s adviser. He speaks and lives authentically and shares how every business owner and leader can do the same for massive impact using the Daily Standards philosophy and practices.
Derek has worked with FTSE100 companies, English Premier League scouts (Chelsea and Leicester City) and footballers, business owners, wealth managers and other coaches.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is actually brilliant. And I disagree with pretty much all of the other comments.
Here are some examples of why goals are not a good idea.
Let's say I set a goal... My goal is to lose 25 lbs in the next 6 months. That's approximately 1 lb a week.
What if I work hard, and do all the right things, but I only manage to lose 20 lbs in 6 months? Then I have failed.
What if instead of doing the right things, I just stopped eating anything except celery and managed to lose those twenty five pounds in a completely unhealthy way... Well, then I have won.
What if I become pregnant and am no longer able to diet at all? If I had set a daily standard to live a healthier life style rather than a S.M.A.R.T. goal, then a sudden unexpected event like this wouldn't completely derail my efforts... But if I became pregnant after setting a goal to lose 25 lbs, then again, I have failed.
Goals focus on results over effort and the reality is that you can't usually control the results. You can only control your own actions on a day by day basis.
If I set a goal to publish a novel in a year, and I write every single day, but don't manage to get anything published, is that a failure?
If I set a goal to earn $100,000 in my business this year but I only earn $90k, is that a failure?
He's saying that rather than setting goals for ourselves, we should strive to be the kind of person who achieves the things we want to achieve, that instead of putting that goal off in the future and feeling dissatisfied, we should focus on today.
And he's NOT talking about habits. Habits are a part of his daily standards concept, but they aren't the whole of it. It's not JUST habits and routines. It's also values and perceptions. It's the way you see, think, and feel about your priorities, your environment, and your own actions. It's so much more than habits. It's not just the things you do, it's the values that underpin the reasons why you do those things to begin with.

All he is saying is that, if you want to achieve your goals, you've to work on it daily. Daily standards define discipline. Discipline drives focus. Focus drives the right focus. Then you start seeing results. Well, if you've a couple of beers everyday and have a full English breakfast, then the goal he made is contradicting to his daily routine. So this makes perfect sense. Your daily routines and behaviour, in the direction or alignment will bring the outcome that you seek or desire.
    Thanks👍

I strongly share your submission that goals are leaving us in the vacuum. Standards are the keys. Bravo !

Thanks Dereck, this is a great TED talk but it's only half the truth! We do need goals (something to aim for) AND (not OR) daily standards (which are behavioural goals) to be successful. My first mentor said success leaves clues. Pick any field - sport, business or entertainment and I'll guarantee those at the top of their game had specific goals to be where they are AND engaged in the daily discipline necessary to make it happen. I bet you have health, business, family and contribution (to name a few) goals Dereck. It's part of the truth as to why you have done so well. The other half of the truth is you raised your daily standards (changed your habits) which is the hardest part of achieving our goals. All credit to you for that :))

Totally agree, goals are just dreams and they won't be achieved without sacrifices. We must be willing to pay the price of success which is, patience, Less sleep, Less socialising, great health diet, physical fitness, HARD work, read and read relevant books, enjoy writing, communicate well, hygiene and cleanliness, research and research, visit associates and make yourself available to useful associates, travel long distance if you have to and finally be comfortable with the new technologies and utilise the Internet, apps very well to raise your standards.
However, the price of failure is ZERO, do nothing and you'll easily achieve, well, NOTHING

    • @MCMellor

not really :) sometimes you have to push yourself to reach the standards you set to be able to reach those goals

I'll share with you an excerpt from the book "Alpha Brain" by Stephen Duneier that seems relevant to this topic: "What I am talking about is beginning the decision-making process by answering
the very simple question, “What is the problem you are attempting to solve?” Yes, before you begin considering the advantages of one act versus another, weighing the pros and cons, or running a cost/benefit analysis, you must first very specifically define the true problem you are attempting to solve, the outcome you desire, and the criteria by which you will assess your decision.
That is the very first step in normative (proper) decision-making, no matter what decision problem you face."
So, yes, setting goals is part of the process, but it's not the only thing. Your acts or daily routine is important too. Act,assess and adjust.

I agree but I slightly disagree. Setting Goals does work, you just need daily standards to achieve them. Simple! How are you going to know what daily standards you need? By setting a goal

Unfortunately, as with Copernicious and his revelations, people even when they have listened to this amazing presentation, they're just not getting the vital message being delivered. They are TOTALLY stuck on the habits and goals part of the process!

  • @edbenzino
    @edbenzino 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What this guy is blabbering about is you need to first put yourself in the mindset before setting up your goals.
    Basic goal setup
    1) what is your why and who do want to be
    2) create goals and break them down from monthly to daily.
    3) setup system and routines to keep you focused and in the flow
This guy falls in the same catogory as the majority of minority. People pleaser, did not setup stepping stone milestones, expecting external happiness, did not learn from his failures until now. Took him as well as anyone else that long because they only did half the work when creating their life guide (includes goals)

    • @edbenzino
      @edbenzino 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@2bagemini its not a brilliant idea... its a brilliant technique. Should be older better tedtalks about setting up effective goals. I did not come with it... in fact its been around for years before either of us were born and through time the brilliant "technique" evolved. I have not stopped following it when it was taught to me... even though i have a successful business, im healthy for my age and i still have time to do what i want before my time goes by. Also my presentations and consultations are more on the topics of time, recovery, and health... and no i would not speak at tedtalks... its not what it used to be
