I finally went with sand myself. When we were in the cattle business, all of our barns and stalls were bedded with sand. Extremely clean and easy to manage. It’s easy on the bird’s feet as well which combats Bumblefoot. Another little trick to help with odor and sanitation is to monthly sprinkle some lime throughout the run. It works amazingly well along with the sand.

I started with sand...will stay with sand. Just as you are showing..so easy to control the poo. It does get packed..because of the rain. But I found that it drains pretty fast and is comfy in the hot summers. In the deep winter I will be adding some pelletized bedding. It will make the walking a little warmer on their feet--and biodegrades pretty well.

Have you found a way for the sand to not become packed? My sand is only good for so long before I seem to have to dig it out again and start fresh.

It would probably be cheaper to call your local landscape company to bring in construction sand by the ton or two tons. For mud, we use the horse pine pellets and it soaks it up.

Oh, you are def right! This is how I try to get my compost, etc. I have a trusted company (friend) but he gets busy sometimes so I don't bother his schedule when I have smaller products. I will def need to re-do something over there tho because the mud just mingles with it over time. I def need to put down a lot more sand and I think I need some stone, which I may get some for another project as well. I'm wondering is I shouldn't make a basic wooden frame dug down in...

Aluminum scoop shovel with a D handle harbor, freight 22 bucks. I’m gonna drill holes in it and make my own sand scooper I’m converting from straw to sand. I live by sandpit, free sand might as well try it out. I just came up with both those ideas watching your video. Thank you.

sand will take daily care, but it is so much cleaner. parasites can not live in it as well. scoop twice a day and replace the sand once a year. mine is 3 or 4 inches deep

You should use coarse sand because all purpose sand can cause impaction.

I’m not sure, but their poop is certainly easier to clean up. :)

Man hard pass! I’d do wood shavings, maybe some hay/straw, grass clipping, etc. Then when it smells, add more!

I love this! How many bags did you end up using?

8-10 I think. But it has already compacted on me and I need to get more. I’m not sure how to keep it from mixing with mud and solidifying. I’m wondering if I needed even more sand.

Instead of fixing the water problem you choose to scoop every day. Ok, have fun. Rest of us will clean out 1-2 a year with deep litter.

Do you use dirt? Just trying to figure out how I don’t need to clean for 1 year. That sounds amazing !! Lol I had dirt and about a month with no cleaning, the smell was horrendous. I switched over to sand

@@meaganalvarez1698 No, you use pine shavings. Add more every time it smells too bad. Clean out twice a year.
