  • In migrant Miao culture, silver is more than just a piece of jewelry-its symbolism runs deep through tradition, history and experience. As a migrant minority, the Miao people historically used silver as a method to carry their wealth. Today, it is considered a good luck charm and a symbol of high status. Parents begin to collect pieces of silver for their daughters from the moment they are born. On their wedding day, Miao women wear incredible headdresses, accessories and clothing handmade with silver.

    Before the invention of paper currency, silver is the main currency of China for a very long time ,also copper as a lesser option, in early days silver was too valuable for any civilian to posses, it's poetic to say this and that, triditions symbology, but basically, these are tribal people from the rural area, they trade with urban people and save the silver, it's money, it's a show of money, that's why these garments are always following the rules of beauty in size, beauty in weight and beauty in volume.

      Actually, as an ethnic Miao.. I agree and disagree with you. It is not a show of money at all. It has spiritual animistic meaning. Miao people's arts, traditions, songs and ways of life all point of their animistic beliefs of the natural world. Us Miao people may be a patriarchal culture today, but our culture still show remnants of strong matriarchal influences. The notion that silver means wealth is inaccurate. Yes, silver ingots were a form of currency in ancient China, but the reason why us Miao people wear silvers have nothing to do with showing wealth.

    • @lsubslimed
      @lsubslimed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Remi Steele - Interesting, I was wondering if it was some type of silver alloy meant to be brighter (whiter) in appearance. I saw a few people comment on it being so white due to its purity so I just stuck with that, didn't care enough to research at the time.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not white because it's pure or impure. It's white because it's not polished. When you polish silver, as most jewelry is, it becomes more grey-metallic looking. When it's got a rougher surface texture, it looks pale white.

      Their inter related Austronesian peoples. Along with the ancestors of the Thai people. You can literally trace the migration routes of the Thai and Hmong/Miao by following the language groups left behind. Several thousand years ago they all fled southern China to resist being sinicized. Every time they fled they left groups of people behind and a snapshot of their language at the time. Parts of Yunnan province have Thai looking architecture and pygmy elephants. Basically, many ethnic groups in the Indo-China region can trace their ancestry to within the borders of modern day China.

    • @davidb5205

      This phenomenon happened LONG before globalization. Before globalization, colonialism disrupted many cultures: Aztecs, Incas, Iroquois, Philippines, Benin, Mali, and more. Before THAT, nation-state formation wiped out minority cultures and regional languages throughout Europe: France, Italy, Austria, etc. Before THAT, warfaring powers like the Mongols disrupted many: Chinese, Iranian/Persian, Russian, Hungarian.
      It's just a fact of life. In fact, relative to the past, globalization is probably the most peaceful and voluntary change to cultures in human history. Most aren't being forced to change; it's up to the youth to perserve their culture.

      Having weird residues from silver jewelry on your body doesn't have healing properties, but it's probably not dangerous. Silver isn't too toxic.
      But they literally say the norm is 28-29 lb.

    Miao is an umbrella term the Chinese government used to group a few non-related, ethnic minorities in Southern China; which includes the majority Hmong. Did the hmongs there have representation for this? Some hmongs in America have a hard-on when they hear that they're lazily referred to as Miao, in china.

    • @glumpink4106
      @glumpink4106 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      bro if china were to break down the miao category into its many groups there would simply just be too many escpecially since some groups are virtually consitent of a dozen or so people. This isnt only for miao but all the other ethnic minority groups being used as umbrella terms. Its a bit like what we have in australia i guess. All the indigennous are called aborigines even though they have over 500 different groups. Its simply inefficient to keep track.

    • @niamtxiv
      @niamtxiv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Miao people migrated from eastern China and settled in southwestern China. During the last dynasty of China, they were forced into southeast Asia.
