    I have the SE DGT Gold Top. After a couple of months owning it, I sold my Les Paul Standard. Didn't see any need to hang on to the Gibson, now that I have the PRS. Absolutely love it.

      I just played my Gibson Les Paul Standard & realized it's too heavy for me now (got a lot older). Thinking of getting this SE DGT if the neck Profile is suitable for my hand. Was your Les Paul a fat 50s neck? Mine is the slim taper 60s.

    I’m a beginner level guitarist and I’m 62. I bought this guitar and it has inspired me to keep working to get better. My few cowboy chords are not enough for the instrument. I’m signed up for Tim Pierce beginner coarse. It is the most guitar for the most people. It gives professional quality for professionals and true beginners at that Goldie Locks price point. Your playing is just so good that it makes me realize how much better this guitar is in the hands of an artist. Thanks

    John, one amazing quality of your playing is that your touch is very consistent over numerous guitars. Because of this, you’ve become an important resource. I found myself checking out your demos when I’ve either purchased a guitar, or I’m considering a purchase. I just bought a used PRS SE DGT, a guitar which has become very desirable these days. This demo reassured me that I made a good choice. Many thanks for the time and effort you put into these reviews.

    I just got a goldtop se dgt. I have 5 cores and 4 se's now. The dgt quality and performance is up there with my core models, it's that good. I'll replace the tuners with locking ones and I have a usa Mann-made bridge to drop into it. I'm also using the neck mostly in single coil mode, so I'll switch the tap lead so that down is split for the neck, and up is split for the bridge. Either that, or I'll add a second push-pull and separate the coil taps. I also noticed the resistors in line on the coil splits in addition to the treble bleeds, which is what they have on the core models. It allows for some of the second coil to remain in the circuit so the volume drop isn't really huge, and there's still a slight noise reduction. Simple, but effective. Overall and really great guitar.

  • @PapaDudeness
    @PapaDudeness 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I love my GoldTop DGT SE as well.. I find the balance between the two pickups quite astonishing to be honest, and the treble bleed on the volume knobs - which makes the two low output humbuckers usable for many different situations - together with the solid vibrato bridge, make the instrument gig ready from the get go, and the whole playing experience comfortable and truly enjoyable.
    The most important thing though is that this thing has tons of mojo (which might not be the case for many of the company's other models); the reason behind that is the combination of the beautiful vintage sounds one is able to get from the pickups, the classy looks, and most importantly, the lovely feel of the neck, which succeeds in making you want to grab the guitar all the time.

    Still enjoying mine quite a bit. I wanted a gold top, but they were sold out everywhere when I was buying, so I bought the sunburst. Not a big deal - its pretty too. I have the defective nut (doesn't go to the edge of the neck on the bass side) which I've heard others comment on as well, but it doesn't impact playability. I can't make it sound like you JOhn, but it sounds great anyway 😁

    I have a standard 24-08, got it on offer from andertons for a ridiculously cheap price. No quality issues with it at all. I put a trem blocker in so it only goes down (oo-er missus). Used it live a couple of times, plays great. Amazing for the dosh. Treble bleed works really well. And I set the pickup switches so the neck is single coil and the bridge is humbucker. Doesnt aound like a strat single coil neck, but decent enough. Be interested to see what you make of one of these John, as it's half the price of a DGT SE.

    I picked up one locally on a really good deal fully intending on flipping it for a profit.... but then I played it for a bit and was absolutely stunned at the playability, tone, and quality... not just "for the money" but even head to head with other guitars I own that are worth 3 times as much. I don't even have any desire to replace the stock pickups which is super rare for me. Only changes I've made were USA knobs like in the vid and strap buttons, and then I added the John Mann drop in locking tuners (even though there wasn't necessarily anything wrong with the stock tuners). Great instrument that I can't wait to gig with! ☮❤🎶

    I'm having a very similar experience right now. I'm also a long time Strat player and I got my first PRS recently. In my case the Custom SE 24-08 so instead of a pull knob for single coil tones I have two small toggle switches which I prefer. That way, I can have like bridge single mixed with neck humbucker or vice versa.
    I'm noticing some of the same things in terms of the treble bleed preserving highs when lowering the guitar volume. It's great.
    On mine, I replaced the tuners with Graphtech locking ones and that did help tuning so did putting 10s on it. I have 10s on my other guitars so this makes sense for me Also, I replaced the built-in trem with a Vega-Trem which I've had on my Strat for a while and absolutely love. To me, that improved the playing field considerably and also improved tuning. That makes it a pricier guitar but it really plays great now! Even with the major mods I'm under 2K (Canadian dollars).
    I'm getting used to the tone which is definitely not what I'm used to but, in my case I find it truly shines with gain. Amazing power chording tones and searing leads. Clean, I have to get used to it. I've had my Strat for decades and that single coild clean tone (position 2) is home for me so the PRS is an adjustment. It does feel like a much pricier guitar though.

    A treble bleed circuit (when well tuned) is one of the best upgrades that can be done on humbucker guitars if you play a single channel amp. With this you can really control the gain dynamically and go to nearly clean just by rolling off the volume.

    After watching your first vid about this guitar I researched it a bit further and bought one myself.. from the music shop in Scotland.
    I’ve only ever owned a PRS acoustic which is amazing- the ones done in conjunction with martin Simpson.
    It’s totally different to any of my other guitars - a lot more modern than my usual “Boomer” (😂)axes- apart from the Mansons that I play.. I think it plays lovely and the high frets make me relax a little with my left hand which is a good thing…really glad I bought it and honestly it’s way too cheap!! Thanks, john for getting it into my face.

    interesting thing to note, the single coil split on the DGT SE does seem to go to the inner coils, at least that's what tapping it with a screwdriver seems to indicate. Therefore the position with both PU and neck rolled down slightly give a pretty stratty tone, which i like very much. To check out if there's an improvement in the Coremodel, I bought one used in my favourite hue, darkcheryburst, and as I like the PUs in there a lot more on their own and even in coilsplit, the coilsplit in these is different, as they use the outer coils. But this let's the middle position sound way less stratty, as the coils are as distant from each other as in a Tele. Bummer...but still hard to decide which one's the better instrument.

    • @Straydogger
      @Straydogger หลายเดือนก่อน

    I found the SE DGT to be fine. It felt like a PRS, played well (specially with the 9s) and sounded decent. not sure I gelled with the control layout but sure I'd get used to it with time. I think the pickups maybe lacked some character, specially compared to the 53/10s, but i wouldn't really expect to match the USA models. And i guess that all comes down to personal preference. If you want a smoother more unified sound they might be just what you're after.

    I bought the goldtop version about 2 months ago and have barely touched any of my other guitars since! Maybe the honeymoon period never ends? If they made a hardtail version I’d buy that one too and might not need another guitar - as others have mentioned, this guitar is the best “desert island” guitar I’ve ever owned, and selling some of my others seems a lot more reasonable having gotten used to how amazing this guitar is. I have no idea why you’d spend significantly more money for the Core version given how well this one sings! Get one if you’re on the fence, it’s hard to imagine that purchase going wrong.

    • @onlyguitars
      @onlyguitars 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree I love my DGT SE, I had the Core DGT and really, don't feel any need to get the Core back.
      If you want a hardtail PRS, I would strogly suggest the Paul's guitar SE. Damn I love mine.
      If I hve to choose 1 would keep the SGT only because tehe pickups are more my liking (more vinntage oriented), and the I think los looks better, but the Paul's guitar overall are lighter, and the playability I think is the best of all PRS Ive had (tied with the Soapbar core mccarty Ive had) I think the wide fat neck and medium jumbo frets are just superb. dont get me wrong the DGT plays awesome, but I find the pauls even better if its possible. Each one gives me something, so love having both. Plus I do love the abalone bird inlys in the paul's guitar.

    Don't put too much thought in everything. Unleash the "Hendrix/Gilmour/Winter" in you. Unleash your sword! (your sound).

    For the price, this thing is hard to beat.
    I would suggest looking for something used if you don’t want to spend 4K on a core model.

    Loving my DGT SE . Neck could have been a bit smaller .but the treble bleeds are excellent. I also switched the Volume controls as there is enough slack in the control cavity. Enjoy !

      @@gdawgs101 I think @cliverkay physically swapped the 2 pots around in order to not have to resolder things 😉 On the DGT, the front volume pot controls the back pickup (and vice versa). Works for David, but I'd personally hate it.

  • @michaelclarkphoto

    I got a Gold top DGT SE last fall. It sounds amazing but I have had some quality control issues for sure. The neck moves like nothing I have seen. I have had to make a lot of neck adjustments on it just to keep the string action playable. I am guessing they didn't let the neck wood dry out enough. I have never seen this with any of my other guitars. The initial setup from PRS was the worst I have ever seen as well. When I received it the action was crazy high. It took a lot of work to get it dialed in and now I have some serious fret buzz at the 10th and 11th frets but only on two strings, which tells me that the frets are not level. I have replaced the tuners with locking tuners, and added the same core knobs you have. This past week one of the pickup rings started warping and has pulled away from the bridge pickup. Not sure how that has happened. All in all, you get what you pay for and while the DGT SE sounds great there are issues.

    I think it's such a shame people always feel like they are having to qualify or even apologise for liking a PRS or their PRS. Clearly great guitars, clearly have a certain 'something' when you find 'the one'. Even this video sounded like you were apologising or over justifying liking it as much as you do.

    I got the Dgt SE and the Semi hollow CE24 USA made. The DGT SE will go back, you can say whatever you want but there is a huge difference in quality, and feel. the main issue I have with the DGT vs the CE 24 are the inconsistent balance of the strings on the DGT you can hear it without amplification, may be it’s just my model here, but I had the same thing with my Silversky SE. Which I sold cause of this, my hollowbody 2 has not this issue at all , that’s the only SE which I kept, so I’m a bit disappointed about the DGT SE. May be I’m buying another batch of the SE DGT later this year, cause i liked the neck pickup a lot that nice kinda lespaul vinatge tone, without the flaws playing a Gibson guitar. But hey, it’s a great time we’re living in, these guitars are in general really good but as I’ve said compared to the US made models there is a huge difference, at least with mine here. Keep it up mate,your content is golden! Cheers
