Fort Stevens is in northwest Oregon and is right on the Pacific and the Columbia River. It was actually finished at the end of the Civil War. It has similar features at Ft Ebey. In June 1942 an Imperial Japanese submarine fired on Fort Stevens. Mounted to the top of the sub was a Yokosuka E14Y seaplane.

Have you been to Cape Disappointment near Ilwaco, Washington? They have a Lewis and Clark interpretive center there but it may be closed due to the virus. Old World War II bunkers and gun placements there too. Lewis and Clark camped there and then took a vote and decided to cross the Columbia and winter over in Oregon. Everyone in their group voted, which included a black man and a Native American woman. That was unprecedented.

That's an awesome area to explore on both sides of the Columbia.

When you turned off for gas in Coupeville, you could have continued down that road and been to the ferry in no time. Going back to the highway takes you further south and you have to circle around north. But, hey, it's a pretty drive and well worth it. I live in Oak Harbor, and most of the time I take that ferry I have the same experience - show up, no line, no wait, drive right on, and off they sail, as if they were waiting for me. And I have NEVER made a reservation.

Good tour of Fort Ebey Park.
    Way to go!!
The next time you visit that part of Whidbey, check out downtown Coupeville, lots of good places to eat and shop. Toby's Tavern is where you can enjoy Penn Cove mussels.
Coupeville is the driest place on Whidbey.
You took the very long route from Coupeville to the Keystone ferry. If you go south on Main Street, you'll get to the ferry in just a few minutes and you won't have to go turn around to get to the ferry car lot.
That was Crockett Lake you passed by near the ferry terminal.
There is one other way off Whidbey: down to Clinton to catch the ferry over to Mukilteo, but that would've taken you in the wrong direction. The Keystone ferry is the only way to get over to the Olympic Peninsula.
During May, June, and July, the Keystone ferry runs during the extreme low tides are canceled.

Absolutely love riding the ferries. The ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria is fantastic. When you get there you can purchase a bus pass that takes throughout the island if you want. Love the Embassy Hotel I have always wanted to go there for High Tea. The ferry is called The Kennewick (pronounced Ken a wik)

I watched one of your older videos this morning where you were visiting Ocean Shores, Washington. You practically drove by my house. Are you heading this way again? You kept mentioning that Ocean Shores was an island but it is a peninsula. There are a couple other tiny little communities, we can't even call them towns, up the coast but they are not on the peninsula. After closing our short clam season last spring because of the virus, they opened it up again this week. I got my limit of 15 clams, which is pretty good for an 80-year-old. The problem with the clam season in the winter is that most of the low tides are after sundown.

Whidbey Island is the longest natural island in the United States.

Sorry, longest Pacific coast island south of Alaska.

    • @scottbridge9391
      @scottbridge9391 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Geographically, Long Island is the longest natural island in the 48 States. However, because of a big legal case back in the mid-1980s involving maritime territorial and fishing rights between the US and Canada, to resolve the dispute, they had to legally redefine Long Island as not an island, but as part of the US Mainland instead, which leaves Whidbey now legally the longest natural island in the Continental US.
But geographically and physically, Long Island is still very much an island, and it's over 100 miles long, twice what Whidbey is. Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island.
Up in Alaska, they have some islands that are longer than Whidbey.
