Nestled among the majestic Elk Mountains in western Colorado, it sits at a lofty 9,375 feet above sea level. Picture that for a moment - the air is thin, the scenery is jaw-dropping, and adventure awaits at every turn. This is the kind of place that takes your breath away and leaves you craving for more.
And then there's the namesake of it all, the Crested Butte Mountain, a towering giant that rises just above town to an awe-inspiring height of 12,162 feet. This mountain, my friends, grants you vistas that are nothing short of stunning, making you feel like you're on top of the world.
Crested Butte is truly a gem in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Whether you're into downhill skiing, mountain biking, or prefer to explore the Nordic ski routes around town, there's no shortage of adrenaline-pumping activities. The West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway offers wilderness areas like Kebler Pass, a place known for its mesmerizing quaking aspen trees in the fall.
But let's not forget the history. This place was originally home to the Ute Indians, and by the 1860s, placer miners had set up shop in the area. It was geologist Ferdinand V. Hayden who, during a survey of the Elk Mountains in 1873, gave the name "crested buttes" to what we now know as Crested Butte Mountain. And the town's founding father, Howard F. Smith, laid out the town by 1878, initially drawn by the extensive coal deposits that would eventually become the town's economic backbone.
