*FUN FACT:* The "Tubular" level in Super Mario World can be beaten while riding a Blue Yoshi. (It's not at all easy, but it _is_ doable.)

Wanna know something funny? I finished the perfect run in my first try, but then I thought that, at the end, the platform I was standing on next to Rosalina was a planet. Long story short, I fell down without getting the star and only managed to complete it again after ~18 tries.
Hardest 2d mario level... untill Mario Maker comes out in september.

I know they aren't hacked but I just wanted to let you know that there are already "third party levels" that are pretty hard (my levels included) or even Kaizo. Mario Maker won't let you make harder levels than there exist already.

You know, at some point, you outta record your "beating of the Perfect Run first try". Otherwise, some may see it as bluffing.
Another hard level: that mummy maze level from Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. I know it's not technically a Mario game, but I still think it deserves an honorable mention. The controls, camera, dead-ends, length (50 rounds of this crap), and over-abundance of enemies really makes it a tough one. The fire piranha plants are the worst, with Chargin' Chucks a close 2nd.
Corona Mountain made me quit the game for 5 years, I came back to it and finally beat it about 2 months ago. XD

I still have nightmares of that Grand Master Galaxy... I'm so proud to say that I completed the Perfect Run, but there were many tears, tantrums and screams along the way. I unlocked the final level in 3D World, but I haven't been able to bring myself to go through that level of torture again...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the trick where if you have extra controllers, just connect all of them at the end of a level in 3D World, jump on the flagpole with every character you chose including your character, and BOOM! the level only has to be played up to two or three times depending on how many controllers you have.

Fair enough, but the Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64 is completely walled. There is almost no challenge to that course except hitting a wall.

I don't know why people have such a hard time with Corona Mountain. It's just as easy as any of the other worlds in the game, and the lava boat section is a breeze as long as you don't slam down the spray button and sending yourself hurtling. Seriously, you don't put the pachinko machine or the lily-pad level on here instead?

World 8-2 in Super Mario Bros. was the bane of my existence. Not sure why this didn't make it. World 8-3 is hard but nowhere near as challenging as 8-2. And 8-4 isn't too hard at all if you know the path.

10) Oh yeah, this one's tough! And it blows that if you fail (which you likely will, a lot), you have to run allllll the way back.
9) Oh, the pain. First part isn't too bad, but the mud boat is a nightmare. Sooooo many deaths my first few times through here.
8) Haven't played this, but wow!
7) Oh yeah, this is one's one of the toughest Rainbow Roads, hands down. Took me lots of practice to master Super Circuit's courses.
6) Haven't played this level, but I've played some very similar levels in the secret worlds of Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's New Island.
5) I found this to be the toughest level in the Special Zone, mostly because if you get hit once, you're dead, no matter what form you take.
4) I have not played this game much despite owning it because of how difficult it is. Never got to that level.
3) I died sooooo many times on this level trying to 100% it. But I've gotten the hang of it now, and can complete it with relatively few deaths.

Having played every single one of these (except for Super Circuit's Rainbow Road), I am so glad you gave the NO. 1 spot to what you gave it to. Beating that with all FIVE characters basically in a row one Friday night this January from hell nearly destroyed me mentally. I was shaking by the time it was over, and was pretty much ready to slaughter the gamepad when I was done. I have beaten The Lost Levels and would rather play through that entire game again rather than do Champion's Road once more. I think it's the hardest thing I've ever done in a videogame at all. But I did get 100%...and that's what matters...right? (sobs)

EZ64 IWBTG is a game that was designed by a couple of developers to be unbeatable pretty much... sure it can be beaten, EVENTUALLY. You could literally play IWBTG everyday for about a year and still never complete it... Type in TH-cam: I Wanna Be The Guy and click on any video to see it played through. And unless it played like that perfectly, it isn't being beaten. Stick to Champion's Road ;)
For me the most hair-rending level in Sunshine was always that damned pachinko level, simply because they mucked up the physics in order to get the pachinko effect. It actively fights you from using your hover nozzle in a precise way, which either means you have to fight that the whole way (dying a lot) or let it shoot you randomly (dying a lot). Oh, and when you die you lose your red coin progress. Have fun!
I have never beaten the Perfect Run. I can't even imagine what Champion's Road is like... I'm still yet to be play 3D World.

The galaxy level is way harder. Champion's road is easier if you go with tanooki.
I've beaten both, sort of, and I remember the Perfect Run being a bit harder (it took me more time, at least).
The Champion's Road is the reason I said "sort of": I could only beat it with Rosalina. Beating it with Toad will take some serious skill and patience.

BlockSquad1000 I beat champions road with Mario in around 200 try's. Just make sure you are at least decent at the game and you know how to long jump, then it won't take as long

Y'know, personally, I'd switch Nos. 1 and 2. At the very least, Champion's Road has the opportunity for powerups and going through the level faster, whereas The Perfect Run is more tedious, time-consuming, and harder as a whole due to not being able to take a hit. (The motion controls, while not the worst ones in the series, can also be a pain.) That said, they are fairly comparable in difficulty, but there's still a noticeable gap.

I can honestly say that Champion's Road with Mario/Luigi and Toad is the hardest level in any Nintendo game I've ever played. Screw Lost Levels, screw Zelda II, this is it. I made a promise to myself, once I got to the level, that I would play for an hour every day until I beat it (with Mario/Luigi/Toad). That was back last December. I beat it in March. This may not seem like much, but that was an hour every day (minus days I couldn't play, so really 6 hours a week) for 3 months. That's almost 72 straight hours on that one damn level. Half of this was probably my adrenaline and anxiousness fucking me up, but it took so damn long. I spent a total of 3 straight days on this damn level.
its easiest with peach for me, and if you combine it with the tanooki, i believe you can have even longer hover ability, it would be easiest with rosalina if it weren't for the piranha plants
but i do agree with it being hard with mario, luigi, and toad... [luigi easier because he jumps higher which does help.]

Ohhh god, me and my brother spent hours on Champions Road and we died about 800 times, but when we completed it EEEVERYTHING was great... Until we found out that you have to beat every level as every character to get 100% completion.

9-7 would be a Top 20 if you had to get all star coins. Otherwise it's almost child's play.

well sadly i spent 5 years NOT KNOWING HOW THE HELL TO UNLOCK PERFECT RUN until i finally searched google and realised i had a whole 2 hours of starbit farming ahead of me. i do have it 100% now. 309 deaths by the way. couldve been lower if i didnt starbit farm or freaking rage on the boss blitz comet.

Fun fact: the spikes in Corona Mountain technically aren't insta-kill, they do 3 damage per frame. It actually takes them 1/10 of a second to kill you from full life (Sunshine is 30FPS).
It's a minor difference, but it means it IS possible to survive the spikes, shown in AverageTrey's AGDQ 2018 run where he touches them at their last active frame by mistake and only takes 3 damage as a result.
Fire bar sprint is pretty easy if you do like this: When you enter the level, hold y and right. Immediatly when the level begins, tap right 5 TIMES, and then start running. This will give you the perfect timing. Then, don't stop. Just run.
MrBean35000vr's Perfect run mod called "Master quest" is harder then any of these, but it doesn't count because it's a custom level.
So is Kazio Mario and Brutal Mario.

MK Wii was my first, so I race around Rainbow Road like it was my goddammed backyard, but I had a friend that started playing with MK 64 and he had quite the battle against that level (also he always finished 10th-7th)
Wii was my first Mario Kart, and I was able to beat Rainbow Road easily with enough practice

On top of the difficulty just to complete Fire Bar Sprint, you also need to remain big until the end in order to get the star coin. Great list! I agree with most of it.
If you use a Blue Yoshi and a Cape, Tubular is easy without ever grabbing the balloon P, you just gotta learn the pattern.

I remember my family buying Super Mario Galaxy 2, and my dad binge-playing every level. He never beat The Perfect Run, and he put 10 hours into it. There was also that level with chilli-Yoshi on the wall.

9-7 from NSMB Wii and Luigi's Goddamn Purple Coins from Galaxy are both harder than Corona Mountain or Wing Mario over the Rainbow.

New Super Mario Bros DS: Impossible Pack
Oh and I had Mario world for my game boy back second grade, it was tough and I never beat bowser, but tubular was something else. I finally fluked as I gutted out a victory on that level from hell. Unreal precision, I think I landed on a piranha plant at the end of the level, but then I got invincibility frames and I very quickly jumped onto the next piranha plant, and then did a long jump to the finish line. I was worried the other levels would be as bad if not worse, thankfully they weren't as bad as tubular.
I've beaten fire bar sprint, many times, and a few without getting hit, and I know from experience that if you sprint, and don't stop at all, if you get pretty far through, win decent timing, the level shouldn't be too prolematic. It's so simple with this strategy, if I attempt it again I could probably beat it in my 1st or second try.

In Mario Color Splash, most levels does give the gamers and instant game over, after getting the Red Big Paint Star, especially in Level 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and Bowser's Castle when rescuing Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser and must escape from Bowser's Castle before it will collapse within the time limit.
There are at least dozen most hardest to get a Shine Sprites in Super Mario Sunshine, including the pinball machine to collect 8 red coin in Delfino Town, collecting 8 red coins in the polluted water and had to ride the lily pad and use the spin jump and use the hover nozzle to reach some of the red coin without landing on the polluted water to lose a life, secret levels on some Shine Sprites on all 7 levels as "Dark Mario" does steal your nozzle and complete the puzzles the old fashioned way without breaking a sweat, same thing as collecting the 8 red coin within the time limit that already cleared the levels that fake Mario had temporarily steal your nozzle.
What about the secret level at the very end of super Mario 3D land? You had to 100% the game to get it, and it is exactly like the perfect run. While being like it, it puts you through puzzles and concepts all while fight extremely hard enemies. Whoever thought jumping on a toads head would be useful?

But it's not quite as long as Perfect Run or Champion's Road, and it is pretty much broken with a tanooki leaf (the hardest part is the set of jumps right before the boss. From then on it's smooth sailing)

There is one coin outside of enemy on that stage, right at the start of the stage. And, at the end I had 48 coins, so it was something like that. Before I started the stage I upped my lives to 99 :P

I have not eaten Champion's Road yet, but I have beaten The Perfect Run quite a few times. Even so, both those levels are very difficult and can test your skills to the highest level
Tubular was definitely the hardest level of SMW. I remember beating the special world for the first time and feeling so damn accomplished

I so totally agree with you. About how hard the Tubular level is. I can't tell you just how many times I had died. Before finally beating that level. And it has always been like that for me. Every single time I had played Super Mario World. Other besides that one level. Super Mario World is still one of the most easiest games to beat.
Took me two years to do that crazy one-hit run in Mario Galaxy 2, and when I beat it, I screamed so loudly, my neighbors heard me- BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT.

The Super Mario Sunshine bonus music in the interludes was enough to make me go through PTSD from the damn Village Underside level
There is a trick around #5 Tubular for SNES if you have good timing, a cape, and a Yoshi you don't mind letting die a falling oblivion death.. it isn't easy, but it's effective

Ah yes, Lost Levels' C-3... I hated that level. In the NES version you have to beat the world in one go without a game over and oh boy, it caused trouble.

I've completed The Perfect Run ALLLL the way back in 2011. Maybe even 2010. I was so happy I recorded the date, it was July 4. But I just can't remember whether it was 2010 or 2011.
It took me tons of lives and weeks of hard work to beat Champions Road with all five characters, never been so happy being a gamer in my entire life.

I've beaten Champion's Road twice, I clicked this video hoping it would be on this list as I found it to be one of the hardest levels in any game I've ever beaten (granted I haven't played that many games outside of Nintendo franchises so I'll be honest, I wouldn't know), but I didn't realize it would be #1 on the list- and I'm not surprised. I actually was about ready to destroy my console for my first few (hundred) runthroughs.
When I beat Champion's Run, I threw the gamepad across the room and ran out of the room with Rocky's face printed out on a piece of paper stapled to my face, with "We Are the Champion's" playing in the background.

I found an exploit to easily beat tubular in SMW, if you bring a Blue Yoshi, and can get to one of the Parakoopas in the middle of the level, since Blue Yoshis have the abilities to fly when something is in their mouths, you can just try to hide at the top of the screen and fly through the enemies like all hell.
I've found that in tubular if you have a blue Yoshi and the cape then if u hit the p switch then get to the koppas then you can eat one and just fly over the level easily

In Super Mario 3D World, you don't need to go through levels five times if you have at least one extra wii-mote. Use the gamepad to control your character and use how many extra wii-motes you have to add other characters. Once in the level, kill the other characters by running into enemies or what have you, and when they return in their bubbles, don't pop them.
Make your way to the end of the level and before you touch the flag, free the characters from their bubbles, pick up the characters and then touch the flag. It'll show those characters as having completed the stage as well. Even one wii-mote knocks running in levels from five times down to three.
When I first beat tubular what I did is I got a blue yoshi from another stage, and then I just ate the first Koopa and just flew all the way. Just make sure that whenever there is something to land on (i.e. Pipe) spit out the shell (press down so yoshi will not hurl it) then eat it again.
tubular doesn't require the balloons JUST take a cape feather and a blue yoshi. activate the first P switch then jump and float over to the first football guy, bounce on his head onto the second's head then land on the block (would be coins but you hit that P switch) from there you can eat a red shell koopa but since you have a blue yoshi it will give you wings and you can easily finish the level
Hey rabbidluigi, don't forget that in New Super Luigi U, Mario was replaced by nabbit, who is completely invincible to everything except one-hit-kill things.
I played Champion's Road enough that almost every part of the level was easy to me, except the boost area at the end. After playing it with all characters, I swore off Mario games for a while. Then I decided to get Super Mario Galaxy 2 since I hadn't played it yet. The Perfect Run seemed so simple compared to Champion's Road. Either way, those two levels will test your might. You can call them a lot of things, but we can all agree they are DIFFICULT!!!
I used to do those rainbow road shortcuts in Super Circuit when I was 4. It's been like 10 years and I wonder how I ever managed to do them.
